In BOTW the soldier's armor also had the same stats and was tied for the highest defensive clothing together with the ancient armor and the of the wild set. However, the last two also outclassed it by having useful bonuses much as the zonaite armor does in TOTK
I miss the ancient armor and they nerfed the amiibo helmets too
Not only that if you wanted something to wear that would show links face but also have the same level of defense as those armors then amber earrings were perfect for that because fully upgraded they also gave 28 defense

Just like with the Hylian set, the major selling point of the Soldier armor is how easy it is to upgrade and, in doing so, grants such a huge boost to defense early on. Because, let's be honest, you're gonna be able to upgrade the soldier set way before the zonite set.

Agreed. Zonai armor is much harder to get and to upgrade. I just found my first few Captain 4s and Soldier 3/4s and I’m 100 plus i hi ours in.
@xuezou1534 I made it a point to upgrade mine as soon as I could. The armor, when paired with a fused Deity Sword, is CRAZY good for boss fights.
I don’t think the armor is “bad”, “outclassed” is a good way of putting it. It’s an inexpensive way to help progress through some harder fights.
Plus if you know your route starting from the castle you can get it SUPER early. Granted I didn't watch the guide to find zonite set as I want to stumble into it. So I don't know how easy that is to get.
They also look better imo
@@samreddig8819 how do you just stumble into that it's super high up in the sky you have to use a lot of charges and a hoverquad to get up there

Yeah, the Soldier is, like, "basic" heavy armor, upgrades with slightly easier-to-obtain materials. Like BotW, it is meant to be supplanted by harder-to-get sets which have less common materials to upgrade with.
Just so everyone knows, you can do the Royal Passage backwards if you enter through Hyrule Castle from the Observation Room metal grate. That way you don't need the opening in the Emergency Shelter.
This is actually how I found one part by councidence. Tried testing if I could get into the castle und then went down the broken stairs from the first floor.
I also did this. I spent a lot of time exploring the cave system
Came here to say this. Did it by accident in the beginning and was met with a closed off wall at the very end that would have been the Emergency Shelter, but I had all the stuff by then.
I did this 😂 went straight for the castle after getting paraglider and then explored until I came out into the shelter lol
There's actually 2 entrances in the castle
I think the Ancient set in Breath of the Wild had the same defense as the Soldier set but you got ancient weapon proficiency. Seems like Zonaite set is a straight replacement for Ancient set.
I'm pretty sure it is just a cheap reskin
because the hit boxes aren't the same length as the models the hit boxes are FAR too long
and the long sword has the same blade as the short sword same size same everything
so that makes the wonky hitboxes even easier to notice

the only reason why I know the size of the hit box is because I swing the sword in grass and yes it cuts grass further than the blade actually reaches
so yeah try not to use the weapons in long grass otherwise you will just feel uncomfortable

Not really, they are very different. and there are other high defense armour in this game like ancient hero aspect.
I miss the Ancient Armor. It was badass af

the "Of the Wild" set did, and still does, have the same defense stats, and its not nearly as tedious to get in this game as the in BOTW. In fact I think its a less of an issue to get than the Zonaite armor set.
Yep this is the one I've been using max upgraded now at 28 per piece with attack up set bonus.
Ancient armor also has a defence of 28. And the diamond circlet now gives attack up. And has a defence of 28 maxed out.
You can actually get access to the soldier armor before you have access to the sanctuary, in my play through I was exploring around the ruins of Castle town and what was left of the base of the castle and there is a balcony that you can see just passed the massive iron doors that'll get you access to the Royal Retreat passage or whatever it's called
I haven’t been able to test it yet, but in botw, the royal guard set had hidden bonuses for swim dash and jump climb stamina up. That made it one of my favorite from the dlc.

I found the soldier armor by accident right when I finished Rito Village 😄 now I’m finally going back for the royal guard outfit bc it’s my favorite lookswise besides the 3 dragon outfits & the fierce deity one
If the Royal Guard set bonus is the same as it was in BotW, it does more than reduce stamina usage for charge attacks. It also reduces usage from jumping while climbing and dashing while swimming.
Thank you for the awesome and helpful guides you do, I remember watching your Trial of the Sword guide as I was playing it, and it helped a ton. So good to see the same great quality and in-depth detail being brought to Tears of the Kingdom. Keep up the great work man, really appreciate the content!
The charge attack stamina up is not the only boost, it also uses less stamina during climbing and during swimming and I think gliding.
i believe that glitch was only in botw

I've used guides from your videos for pretty much all of the pokemon games on switch, as well as zelda games like botw, skyward sword hd, link's awakening, and now tears of the kingdom. I've even used some of your guides for animal crossing new horizons. You have had not only the most consistent guides, but also some of the best on the platform. Once, again thank you for all of fantastic guide videos!

In BOTW the royal guard armor reduced ALL the "wheel chunk stamina consumtions" despite the description not saying that. Please check if its still the same in this game. IDK if it was unintentional from nintendo or the description was broken in the translation but its definetly worth checking if its still as OP in this game as it was in BOTW.
Its pretty much climber + zora armor together with higher defences and charged attack stamina bonus, it was really busted.
I wonder if it also affects bullet time in this game, since it now also uses 30% of your stamina instead of depleting over time.
I did not know it was so broken playing the game again well I'm going to use that armour a lot
of course I'm not using a fresh save file I am not ditching my tunic and almost 100% save
sadly, from upgrading to max, its not, and i never quite feel like the slight extra armor does all that much when the set bonus is so minor, and gloom enemies always feel like they deal a whole heart on hit due to gloom effect regardless, so, that is a major bummer, as i would so use it instead of the climbing set if that were the case
Did you guys know the champions leathers outfit allows you to shoot your beam out of the master sword with out full hearts, try it out
I remember visiting lookout landing after getting 2 sages and was surprised by the new cave. What surprised me more was the sheer length of it. It honestly took me 30 minutes to carefully get everything.

The Royal Guard Armour is supposed to be early game high defense armour while the Zonite armour is end game armour. The fact you got them in reverse shouldn't subtract from their intention. The Soldier armour I've used as cheap slot filler when i don't have full sets of armour.
Hate on the soldiers armor all you want but in my opinion it still looks the absolute best with the hylian hood like a paladin sort of thing and that's why I will never abandon the soldiers armor
Amber earrings have defence stat of 28 as well if you don’t want Link wearing any kind of helmet or hat.
Diamond circlet ?? Doesn’t cover his hair
ancient armor gave the same defense as the soldier armor but it also had guardian resist and ancient proficiency

You can actually get the soldiers armour through a cave at the bit of hyrule castle that isnt floating. It was pretty much one of the first things i did exploring at the start of the game.
I got the royal guard chest piece from ceces store after completing the hateno election

Ok some extras and a fix for Austin here
1. You can get the royal guard shirt in the Hateno clothing shop for 2.2 rupees, better to get it in this way than in the shop but the more you know
2. The "of the wild set" was not the only set that rivaled the Soldiers armor for the defense. They Ancient (guardian) armor also did such, and I'm pretty sure Austin pointed this out his Zelda vid lol

13:06 the ancient set also had 28 def per piece. But of course, that set was wildly expensive.
And it was still technically outclassed by a full 60 defense flame breaker set because of flame guard.
@Diego Medina outclassed defensively against guardians, because for some reason most of their laser damage was fire/explosion damage. Ancient proficiency made the ancient armor far and away the best armor for combat

did not get to this playlist until after i had teh vow of Yunobo. that really made the soldiers armor a breeze.
just a heads up you can get into the cave for the soldiers armor at the very beginning of the game (as soon as you land on the ground) there's cave entrances to it in the castle (the part that remained on the ground)

Also the royal passage leads you directly to the guard chamber so while you are getting the soldier armor might as well get the chest peice of the royal guard at the same time.
Also of note, if you've done the Mayoral Race quest in Hateno, the Royal Guard's uniform is actually available at CeCe's shop! Ya know. If you don't feel like searching down that particular chest. Not sure if she offers the rest of the set later on tho cause i haven't done any of the regional phenomena yet. Also btw it's definitely one regional phenomenon, i have way more than 5 hearts and it hasn't unlocked for me yet

I got two parts of the Soldiers armor today and got to the end of the cave. Didn’t want to comb back through for the last piece so I was just gonna wait for Austin to upload on it, two hours later and 😂
question: do you still need the 442 korok seeds to full upgrade the weapon,shield and bow invertory slots in tears of the kingdom?
Of the Wild tunic has a defence of 28 while giving an attack up buff as well. Not sure how much attack up but I've fully upgraded this outfit and it's elite.
The emergency shelter can be accessed through the castle side entrance right from the start of the game, also its sad how heavily nerfed the royal guard armour is in this game :(
Soldier armor is still really good easy lv 3 for early game battles I had the whole set befor any of the dungeons. Was exceptionally useful in my play thru
I agree about the arrows thing 😂 I’m always swimming in arrows. It’s clearly a skill issue if you’re running out.

In both games the armor sets that are related to historic/ancient (as in old) have had highest defense stats
Because it's just a fancy reskin with a new buff
Hi Austin, do u know if the gleooks take bonus elemental damage?
Not sure if you get the same results with the cannon or bombs, but if you break up the blue rocks manually, they sometimes drop gemstones. I ended up with a quite a few by the time I was done.
soldiers armour you need 1 part of main quest to open the path to the heart, stamina swapper. on second save i went and got all shrines before any temples and its still not open. so rito it is. but you can get it if you start from hyrule castle

I didn’t get around to this until after I finished the mission in Goron City so this was a lot easier.
You can get royal guard uniform from the Cece quest line in Hateno as well
I only have one temple completed. (Thw one you suggested to do last in abother video) and the shelter pathway is open. there is also an entrance in hyrule castle. i donated an apple to a cherry tree to find it.
Not sure if anyone has said it yet but to clarify with Austin, you do have to complete at least one of the regional quest to get the passage to open. I came in the back way to find the wall left and did the Rito quest then came back and it was open

i think you can access this from the other side at any time, but the opening in the lookout landing is progression locked
Royal guards armor looks sick
I find reward of the Soldier's armor for clearing the Emergency Shelter to be a fitting reward, especially for being a part of one of the more labyrinthian cave systems in the game. Better than simply purchasing it like BotW. It feels earned, and is really helpful during early game.
I'll definitely upgrade the soldiers armor as soon as possible when master mode inevitably comes in dlc or a update (probably dlc) but for my first playthrough where I'm doing 3 hearts only I'm not worried about defense

You don’t need to have the Lookout Landing entrance open to get the Soldiers armour. Just go to the bottom half of Hyrule Castle and there’s two different entrances to that are connected to that same underground tunnel system.
Just move the grates open with ultrahand.
One is in the Observation room where the statue used to be and the other is in a small room to the side when going down a set of stairs, a Korok used to be in said room in BotW.
To open the emergency shelter in Lookout landing I believe all you need to do is talk to the guy with a spear directly on top of it.
I am not sure if you can get access before but I think you need to have done the early game part of crisis at Hyrule castle. Once Purah goes to the tower then you will have access to the bunker.
But for the wall section to break open you have to have done 1/4 of regional phenomena.
There is also a way to get into the cave ,directly from Hyrule castle whenever you want.
Just head to the observation room staircase and open the metal grate.
I got the wall section in the shelter to open before doing any of the regional phenomena. Don't know what the trigger was, but it was very, very early on in my playthrough.
Honestly I didn't even think the soldiers armour was in this game, I've found a few pieces of all of the armours but not a single piece of the soldier one . That's why we have you austin 😂. Keep up the good work mate
Honestly the armour was done horribly in this game makes more sense to sell soldiers armour because there was more of it than royal guards armour but now they sell royal guards armour in the shop instead of the soldiers armour at hateno
Funny how certain sets have multiple places you can get them. I got the RG uniform from the shop I’m Hateno once I did the election quest.
In botw the ancient armor set also had a defense of 28 as well so if you were doing nothing but farming giant ancient cores you were mighty powerful
