I know I could go in the house and try this myself but I wanted to ask anyway. Could you work this from the top down in a spiral instead of that I’m sorry I hate hate hate slip stitch, chain, whatever. I love your designs I just wanted to ask you about the spiral thing. Thank you.
I have followed this pattern to the T and watched the video but the actual houndstooth doesn’t look the same on mine. When you start the first row in the video it looks exactly like mine but when you say to finish the 6 rows and you skip ahead it looks different. Very odd. Do you turn it inside out?

I cannot seem to do that type of start. No matter what I try its always twisted. Any suggestions?

Doesn’t seem like it is. Starting chain of 40 doesn’t begin to go around an average adult head.
