    Very Interesting move by Canon. The high FPS is great, RAW wasn't something I was thinking about for this camera but, a very welcome addition.
    The screen/XLR placements, have to be the best thing I'm seeing here. Ergonomics & usability is always one of Canon's strong suits(along with color science) and this seems to take it up a notch.
    My guess is this will initially be priced at ~$10,000. If this is priced much higher, that seems odd to compete directly with their own C300 mkii......and it can't be lower than 8g's....right?....I mean, this is Canon after all.

    Hi ProAVTV, with the release of this model I must be honest - I am excited. The 4K Raw option is awesome to have for the bigger jobs, and well, Ill be more keen on the XF-AVC when it arrives over the MP4 any day. My question that I have is regarding the 1080p 120fps.. From all the videos that I have seen so far, it seems that the image is very soft (reminiscent of the 5D days).. Would you reckon an external recorder for this mode will solve this (meaning 1080p at 120fps in ProRes 422), or would the XF-AVC do the job just fine later on? If an external recorder is the route to take, which one would you recommend? Thanks in advance, Dan.

    • @ProAVTV
      @ProAVTV  7 років тому +1

      Hi Daniel
      You wont get 100 fps out over the HDMI i'm afraid. So an external monitor wont work. No word on whether the XFAVC will be able to do it so we will have to wait and see for that.
      Canon always said with the C300 II, that the only way they could get sharp high quality slow motion was to crop in on the image. I assume thats what we are seeing here with the C200 using the full sensor for 1080p slow motion.

    Hi Carl, When you are able to 'develop' the raw data could you give some detailed technical info on the computer platform power along with the software used and the time taken? I have seen reports of Canon Raw Developer taking 30 mins to process 128 GB into ProRes - obviously on a Mac. It would be very useful to know if Canon Raw Developer 2 has any batch processing capability, not so helpful for the 'look' but for conversion to a 'normal' codec which could perhaps be done overnight for those who have the time luxury. Your comments on the quality of the images is also something I'm looking forward to with great anticipation! It would be very useful if Canon produced some videos about learning how to use their new raw data stream and released the user manuals asap. For me the superb auto focus is a very attractive offering at this price point and the focus pull on your talent's walk to camera was impressive, as has been reported elsewhere. Cheers. Bob.

    Hi Carl, bit tricky, isn't it? Trying to show the wonders of raw via You Tube! I guess we all ought to come along to ProAv's showroom. You will have tea and bikkies available, now won't you? Joking aside, the best thing will be for you to give us an honest assessment of what the results look like on a high end monitor - I think you have built up s welcome reputation for giving balanced assessments. When you do cover Canon Cinema Raw Light perhaps you could give a short walk through of the 'development' software? Cheers. Bob.

    Thanks for the info! Australian user, I've been hanging on to my C100 good and proper and it still does beautiful images, it's ergonomically a great camera.. they picked up a few point with the mark II from the I (unusable view finder, not much articulation with the screen, no internal mic on the body) that made it a no-brainer if you didn't already have a Mark 1, though I wasn't going to spend $18-22k on a C300 MKII, I won't justify it.. that said, likely $15k for the c200? I'm so excited to get into 10+ bit colour space and have the option of high speed and 4k for punching in on interviews.. looks like 15 minutes on a 128gb CFast 2.0 for 4k recording... I've just found 256 gb CFast 2.0 cards on shopbot for $1,399 aud?? x 2 for dual slot recording.. peh media.. would need 4 at least.. or I'm thinking I'll pair it with the new Atomos Sumo for set pieces and plug in SSD's .. Samsung 850 EVO 1TB's are $400 AUD? Yay time for a DIT
    Price wise I'm finding Body only C100 mkII $6,180 / C300 mk II $18,635 at Lemac Film & Digital though looking online, $7,699 GBP so into AUD 13239.78 (+ GST?) .. $14,562
    Still shitty on the shoulder without a bunch of accessories though the XLR inputs are on the body now
    Oh.. it's not doing dual slot recording for the CFast.. 1 slot only.. hmmm.. though proxies to the SD which I'll likely live on for long form interviews anyway :D

      Thanks you for replying Carl, i'm not so much worried about the fantastic performance of the c300mk2, i'm more concerned about the XFAVC 10bit update the c200 is already scheduled to get and wondering why the 8bit slow motion capabilities can't also be shared with the c300mk2 - having the 8bit MP4 60fps 4K and non crop 120fps would help a lot.
      The ability to buy & use the touchscreen module for the c300mk2 would also be fantastic.

      Completely agree, and i've asked canon if they will be adding all of that to the C300 II, but they dont know yet.
      They havent specified though whether the XFAVC coming to the C200 will be 8 or 10 bit though, and my moneys on 8 bit.

    But what do you do with the raw light if you own a pc? Convert it to a bit mapped format or Open EXR appear to be the only two options in Canon's conversion software. Use DaVinci and there are some indications on line that DNxHR can be produced. After Apple abandoned support for Quicktime on PC's I worry about archival life of some video formats. What's wrong with producing something reasonably compact in say an MXF wrapper? This not too badly priced camera is, in my opinion, let down by the supplied support software. Raw is the future, but this is not the way to get there. Bob.

      ProAV TV Hi Carl, thanks for the response. I suppose I'm worried about the here and now. It would have been helpful if Canon's Cinema Development Tool V2 had supported more compact transcodes, even if some of the very high image quality was lost. However, I've just come across what appears to be some C200 raw files that I hope to download and try on the latest Resolve 14 beta. Apparently not all the image parameters can be tweaked, but if it will run on my still reasonably fast i7 that's a big step forward for me with a Camera I otherwise really like a great deal. The eight bit MP4 seems to be getting good reviews as well, so that helps. Reading the C200 specs it looks like HD output is available in 10 bit, unless I have misunderstood, which at my age is a distict possibility! Do you know if I've got this right, or is it eight bit in a ten bit format? Anyway, glad you do have tea and bickies ..... I very much appreciate the honesty in your video's and I will remember that when I do come to make a purchase, currently scheduled for early in the New Year. At the moment it is C200 plays FS5 plays Eva-1 as I need something small and light with good image stabilisation. Cheers. Bob.

    Great review! I'm very interested in this camera, but one thing you said made me wonder; HDMI out will be 8-bit only at 4K? Is that also the case with the SDI out? If the upcoming XFAVC codec will also likely be 8-bit then that means shooting RAW internally will likely be the only option for getting 4K 10-bit with this camera? Is that the case? Is there no way to get 4K 10-bit out to an external recorder like an Atomos for example? That's potentially a dealbreaker for me.

    • @ProAVTV
      @ProAVTV  7 років тому +1

      Correct. You can get 10 bit 1080p over the HDMI but not 4K.
      For that you need the C300 mkII or to shoot in raw on the C200.
      Carl

    • @stianh82
      @stianh82 7 років тому

      Thank you for your reply. That's something of a disappointment for a camera in this price range though. Particularly given the lack of an internal 10-bit codec inbetween RAW and MP4. Even cheap cameras like GH4/GH5 can output 4K 10-bit 422 so I'm having some difficulty to understand Canon's decision to make this a ''RAW or 8-bit with nothing inbetween'' camera. I suppose 10-bit through HDMI is not something that is likely to be implemented in a future update?

    Owner of a production company here. Is it going to be h.264 .mov? Or .mp4? .mp4 is unusable for professional capture. It just seems you can get a Canon 5DmkIV with a $295 Atomos 422 recorder and achieve the same thing...basically. Except 4:2:0 UHD, and 60p. But both cameras will send HD 4:2:2 out. c200 is $7500 U.S. 5DmkIV is $3300 (and soon with a $99) c-log plus $295 for the recorder. We've used the A7Rii and GH5, and both don't have anywhere near as good color science as Canon, and of course, the Dual Pixel on Canon is amazing, where as the GH5, you're almost stuck with lock-off tripod to stay in focus. If this camera C200 shipped with the XF-AVC internal HD and UHD codec at 10bit, shut the door. But it doesn't. And won't.

    • @ProAVTV
      @ProAVTV  7 років тому

      Curious as to why .mov would work for you but not .mp4?
      It's just a file wrapper, the internal H.264 compression would be exactly the same
      Carl

    • @unstoppablejk
      @unstoppablejk 7 років тому

      ProAV TV in short, side by side compression tests, as well as capture tests with both codecs (h264 and MP4) have shown increased digital blocks and artifacts in MP4 files making them unusable. Whereas h264, although not ideal has served as a minimal deliverable on non-broadcast projects. We have only used MP4 reliever compression when sending to PC only corporate viewers. With all that said...my original question still remains about the codec being used. But the point about sending a 422 HD signal out can be done with the 5dmkiv same as c200.

    • @JamesJacksonFilmz
      @JamesJacksonFilmz 7 років тому

      Josh Kameyer this is not a complete grasp towards image quality as there are several other factors in it including the sensor. The gh5 uses mp4 files like the c200. the sensor is probably the biggest factor next to bit rate. the c100mk2 uses mp4 and produces amazing images.
      the c200 takes the same sensor as the c700 so again simply saying h.624 is better than mp4 (which btw is not the same thing as one is a codecc the other is a wrapper) is no way shape or form an apples to apples comparison.
      also yes the 5d mark 4 can send out a 422 subsampling. however there is 2 major difference.
      1. 5D4 can't send uhd out the HDMI. the c200 can
      2. The c200 can send a 10 bit 422 signal out both the HDMI and SDI in FHD. the 5D4 can only send an 8 bit signal.

      autofocus which is so good that you almost dont need a focus puller especially useful for gimbals not only that it can be controlled via WIFI on a phone or tablet, lowlight capabilities destroy any of the BM line cameras, try shooting 10,000 iso and tell me the image is even comparable, canon has the second best colour profile in the world, this camera is pick up and play, the battery is lighter and lasts longer than BM, canon has more reliable cameras than BM, this is a more compact camera and easier to use.
      id rather buy a camera that works extremely well in many condition than one plagued with problems by a company who churns out new cameras with problems like magenta..
      I can guarantee that most productions will opt for the c200 that says something, the industry knows something you dont, specs arent everything.

    Hi Carl, I've just tried Canon raw light development software on a PC to process Canon .crm files. What I get is no output options, only a folder full of .dpx bitmapped files, each 38 Mbytes, one per frame. Unless I'm doing something wrong this is unmanageable for me. My understanding is that it is not possible to change white balance using say, DaVinci Resolve. Pity, it looked such a nice camera otherwise. Please folks, don't tell me to buy a Mac - I'll ask you to pay for it! If I've missed something (quite liklely!) then do let me know. I really like this camera otherwise. Bob.

    They better come out with a c100 mark iii at much affordable price! This is exciting news for people who are above entry and intermediate level, but this still is very expensive if this is suppose to be their competition against a7sii/gh5. The c100 with only 1080 60p and internal nd as a + for $4,000 is ridiculously out of date. Great camera, but way overpriced.

    • @JamesJacksonFilmz
      @JamesJacksonFilmz 7 років тому +1

      TheResonating its not competing against them. its competing against the FS5, FS7, Ursa Mini Pro and the Panasonic Camera that will be announced at the end of this week.
      the camera competing against those are the 1Dxmarkii and 5Dmark4

    • @TheResonating
      @TheResonating 7 років тому

      Yeah and the 1dx markii is only $1,500 less than the c200 and the 5d is crap for video. So there's no option right now from canon that even competes with the sony a7sii and gh5

    • @JamesJacksonFilmz
      @JamesJacksonFilmz 7 років тому

      TheResonating I guess not but I am not sure canon cares about that market segment for video. those are at best prosumer cameras and consumer cameras in actuality. Canon is more focus on making pro level cinema grade cameras for their video products

    • @TheResonating
      @TheResonating 7 років тому

      Well they certainly for a while invested a decent amount of time for the c100 and dslr revolution. There's no reason why they can't make a 3 to 4,000 dollar camera that has 1080p 120fps and 24p 4k without 5dmk4 crop style . The c100 mark iii should have these specs, and canon is missing out on dominating the market at the entry/intermediate level. Its just very frustrating to be stuck with terrible colors and micro four thirds sensor, but yet have such amazing specs, and not have even a 4k 60p or at least a 1080p 120fps option from a intermediate canon camera.

      i wouldn't call c200 run&gun type of camera, the same as c100 and c300 - it's too big, has low ergonomy (even if it looks like everything can be conroled from outside of the body), has too many protruding cables and other components, too many "same shaped" buttons, noisy fan, and to initiate recording it takes about 10 seconds since the power button is switched (the same as previewing the recording files...unacceptable (in 5d you can do it immefiately) and Red Scarlet costs less then c200 . Anyway, I am not fun of red or canon...simply don't understand what was the reason to create this kind of camera..it's not a film camera, it's not a run and gun camera, it's not a discrete/lightweihgt camera for amateurs, so who will wi using it?
      I will tell you - wedding cinematographers who wants to look more professional then they acutally are

    • @JamesJacksonFilmz
      @JamesJacksonFilmz 7 років тому +1

      Marcin Cedro wow idk how we are seeing the same camera? Not run and gun? low ergonomics? the c-line is some of the most ergonomically built cameras in the industry. you clearly have never used one. ergonomics does not mean small and compact like a DSLR or mirrorless camera I hope you know that. really red scarlet cost anywhere between 15k-20k the c200 is max 7,500 half the cost at the scarlets lowest value. if you used any the c-line cameras you know the fan is a none issue. the red cameras are far more noisy than the c cameras.
      please tell me what a run and gun camera is in your eyes?

    • @user-km9fz1sy5y
      @user-km9fz1sy5y 7 років тому

      please take a look at second hand red scarlet (not dragon) or older red one version....they are prices at 3-6k USD
      you are asking me " what a run and gun camera is in your eyes?"
      run and gun = immediate boot up (casue you can miss the important shot, time is money)
      run and gun = intuitive control in all conditions (even if there completely dark and I can only acces the buttons and recognize them by their shape) and without the need to change menu settings during the recording (like fps, soft manual WB control / shutter controll / PP profile controll etc)
      run and gun = AUTO MODE/AV/TV mode function to record in extremely dynamically changing conditions/action when interference in settings or manual cotrol is impossible or not recommended for proper recording
      run and gun = good quality buil in mic (like in some ENG camcorders)
      run and gun = SMALL SIZE or ability to decrease its size to something similar to DSLR because in some conditions it is decisive as some professions / recordings require discretion or require installation of the camera in ultra tight spaces
      I was using c100 for about a 1,5 year and I realy hated this camera I really appreciate 5d more than c100 even if it hasn't got so many functions.
      The last good camcorder from canon is XH-A1 - It is a shame that canon did improve this model to the needs of the contemporary market

    • @ProAVTV
      @ProAVTV  7 років тому +2

      Sounds like you have found that smaller DSLR style cameras work better for your own work. Fine, get a 5D, a7s or GH5 and you'll be very happy.
      Please dont try and tell everyone else in the industry that they should think the same. Many users have found a more traditional video camera like the C100, C300, FS5, FS7 etc. works far better ergonomically for their work.
      Different people need different things from their cameras, theres no one camera for everyone.
      I think the C200 is going to fit a lot of peoples needs though, its going to be a popular camera
      Carl
