      No joke, his comment is spot on. The raw, lighting, and grading are all INCREDIBLE. This video, while just of your face, is awesome! Can't wait to see some real cinematic shots out of this thing. I feel like once you've seen the raw footage, you can't go back to the 8 or 10 bit. What kind of data does the RAW eat up?

      Thank you! I feel addicted to Raw now, even though its overkill for a lot of what I do. I like having a workflow that I can use for bigger things. The size is about 500 gig per hour for raw. HUGE!

    Unlike some of the less kind comments below, I appreciate you putting this comparison together. I've owned a C200a for a few weeks and, like you, I'm searching for a good base setup. If you were using the 8 bit 420 proxy recording then I do think there's a concern about the comparison, because just from a resolution standpoint you'd then be comparing 4096x2160 RAW against 2048x1080 Proxy. To my eye the most striking difference between the RAW and the 8 bit footage is the detail and that could be explained by resolution alone (the RAW file contains approximately 4 time the number of pixels). Moreover, if if is the proxy, then we're seeing 1100 Mbps (RAW) against 35 Mbps (Proxy) - and put that way, it's actually fairly impressive how good the proxy looks at 1/30th the size.
    With regard one of your comments, I thought you _can_ load LUTs onto the C200 but perhaps I'm incorrect in thinking that. I've been using it with the Atomos Ninja Inferno, onto which you can load custom LUT and I highly recommend it as a monitor, if nothing else. I've found the C200a monitor to be a bit uninspiring.
    Lastly, however 'flawed' commenters might argue this comparison is, your footage is really great- lighting, composition, etc... I'm pleased to see someone is getting such great results out of a C200. I look forward to more of your work and, again, I appreciate you putting your footage out there.

      You're very welcome. I'm surprised how many armchair cinematographers out there who don't even own this camera and never will feel the need to weigh in :) I'd love to see some of your footage. I plan on shooting a feature with this next year (I shot my previous feature with the c100 m1) and have a bunch of questions still to answer. More to come!

      Ok this is my last comment (I've left a couple...sorry), There are a LOT of people looking a this camera and deciding whether or not to buy it based on what the mp4 8bit looks like. You started your video off by stating how much misinformation is out there. I think it's seriously important that you go into youtube and add the fact that we're looking at 35mb 2k Proxy files and not the 4K 100mb files the camera is capable of. Your stuff looks great but you're doing exactly the opposite of what you set out to do! Holy crap! I thought I was watching a 4K video btw!

    • @Crimsonengine
      @Crimsonengine  6 років тому +1

      I have done a few more test since I shot this and am convinced that the only difference between the 2k proxies and the 4k mp4s is the size. There is no more color information, and once you downsize the 4k they look identical (this makes sense, since the proxies are just down sized by the camera). Both mp4s look great, they just don't have the colors or dynamic range of the raw (the camera only lets you use clog2, the widest log, in Raw and limits mp4 to clog3). Hope that helps!

And I noticed the colors, and I know a well lit face does all the difference but then the colors of your eyes, and I was like, how is this possible, then you explained and I was like why all the youtubers don't upload raw 12bit video footage, it's looks so damn good, what I noticed was that the 10bit and 8 bit, your face looks out of focus, when 12bit brings the focus all back on.

    Thank you, this video helped me clear some doubt. I'm in the market for a more professional video-dedicated camera and I really like the C200 price point to features ratio. I was put off by its apparent lack of a middle ground option but the solutions you present are quite viable. I'm used to shooting ProRes 10-bit 4:2:2 for almost anything so I'd never get a camera which can't do that, RAW would probably be too much to handle for my laptop.

      Thanks for the support, Kevin! Once you shoot Raw, its very hard to go back. I'm researching shooting a feature on the camera next year, and realized I'm going to have around 20 terabytes of footage that will need to be backed up multiple times. But that will mean I can remaster in HDR at a later date and lots of other options. Good luck with the new camera.

    So, I'm finding it really hard to find out it this camera actually can output a 422 10-bit 2k video signal over HDMI. I've read articles that say you can only output UHD over HDMI (not SDI), but I've also seen in the same articles that the only 422 10-bit output you can get is from the SDI port which doesn't make much sense. I know you say in this video that you can get 422 10-bit over HDMI or SDI, but could you confirm that it definitely works over HDMI? I also know that you recorded this video over SDI to the Video Assist. Was that just a personal preference of SDI over HDMI?
    Basically, if this camera can record at least 2k over HDMI to my Ninja V external recorder then I'm sold. I'm renting it over the next while to shoot a project or two, but it would be great if you could say for definite that it does or doesn't support 2k 10-bit over HDMI. Thanks

    After a few test shoots i have fallen in love with this camera. I love the size, the ergonomics, the auto focus and the image quality, but only the RAW footage. The 8 bit footage is the worse that I've ever seen. The lighting has to be "ideal" to get clean images. Tons of artifacts if you look closely. I hear people saying that the 8 bit is pretty good. I disagree. I wouldn't use it on a paid gig. Besides that, there is a lot to like. Now i need to spend what the camera cost me in Cfast 2.0 cards.

    great video. Been making UA-cam videos for years on DSLR's and am moving towards something like the C200 for better overall quality and flexibility when recording sound from multiple sources etc. The color grading, codec world, is still Greek to me although I get the overall idea. In your opinion, do short films necessarily have to be filmed in RAW. It looks as the mp4 quality is still off the charts and I wonder if the inconvenience and space of using RAW might make it too much a pain and expense to work with.

    There's no question the 8Bit colour looks slightly anemic and washed out. However, I have seen very, very, very, good 8 Bit cameras which would blow the C200 out of the water (In 8 Bit performance only, of course), one such camera is the Canon 1 D C, which features 8 Bit but not in 4.2.0 colour space - The Canon 1 D C records in 8 Bit 4:2:2 colour space @ 500 Mbps data rate (featuring 2 bits of colour information per pixel), as oppossed to the 4:2:0 format used on mirrorless digital cameras.

    Fantastic demonstration of the differences in codec. The lack of internal 10 bit codec was a huge bummer for this camera, but I was starting to hear the 8 bit still holds up well. Seeing this disproves that. The RAW looks so fantastic it really shows how lacking the 8 bit is. I know they're trying to not cannibalize the C300II, but think that Canon made a big mistake not including a 10 bit internal codec on this camera along with the RAW. It's already a successful camera, but that would have made this one of their all time biggest selling cameras.

    Hey there. Great videos! I have a quick question about the C200 and your Blackmagic Video Assist. When using the Video Assist on the C200, does the C200 trigger the recording on the Blackmagic automatically? The Blackmagic Video Assist uses timecode for the trigger record function. I know the C200 doesn’t output timecode from the SDI, but I’ve read in some manuals and literature online that it does send timecode out the HDMI port. So theoretically it should trigger the Video Assist to record when you press the record button on the C200.

      @Crimsonengine  6 років тому +1

      Bob, you're a genius! I just tried this now and you're RIGHT! Setting the blackmagic to record trigger:T/C run and telling the c200 to send timecode over hdmi does indeed trigger the record on the video assist. Great work! I'll put this in a video.

    two questions: 1.) Recoring 10 bit on an external recorder means that you can't have OSD on the outputs, so you have to alwys switch OSD on and off while shooting. Is this how you work or is there another solution? Thanks... 2.)Theres quite a difference in Sharpness and Quality between the 1080 (bad) and the 4k (good) mp4 recorded internally, as mentioned in many forums, wich has nothing to do with the lower resolution of the 1080 (but probably due to low quality internal render??). Did you experience someting similar when you record externally 1080 vs 4k?

    I looked through the comments to try and find my answer but couldn't quite find the clear answer I'm looking for so I thought I'd ask (forgive me if I missed the answer somewhere).
    - Will the C200 record 4K 10bit 422 to a capable external recorder (like Ninja Flame) or will it only record 2K when set to output to the external recorder at 10bit 422?
    - I've read.... if I want to record 10bit 422 to an external recorder, I can only do it in 2K. Is this true or can I get 10bit 422 4K to an external recorder?
    Your video is a real eye opener and I'm learning a lot. Your answer would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

      Thanks for the feedback.. When the Eva is released and I can get my hands on it I'll do a comparison video. If raw is what you want (and I have become addicted to the flexibility and quality it offers) the Eva won't do it internally and it won't do it right away. There will be a future upgrade at some point after release and you will need an external recorder. I think that will be a deal breaker for a lot of people, but we'll have to see what the quality of the internal 10 bit is.

As long as there's the external recorder work-around to obtain 10bit, people will buy the c200. #EVA1 👍

    This is by far the most interesting video that I ever saw on UA-cam. It answered many of my questions and yet begot more questions. Because of this video, I subscribed your channel and started watching all your videos.
    I have an upcoming documentary project that I am planning to buy C200 and shoot RAW then to transcode to 422 10bit to save the hard drive space. The question is, will I be able to get the same kind of dimensionality if I use your LUTs?
    I own a RED S-W and never saw my image as good as yours in terms of image quality. I felt bad about buying RED and the lack of my ability but this video enlightened me and gave me a new hope to take a second shot with shooting with RAW.
    Is there some type of magic in grading or post-production process to make the subject pop out of the screen, with great dimensionality with such modest budget lens as Rokinon?
    Thank you in advance for your help with the issue. I will be looking forward for your response. Thank you.

    I'm just trying to see whether in a quick run and gun documentary situation this camera can use AF and Auto Exposure to shoot something quick like a DSLR in Auto mode but with C-Log on either RAW or its 150mbs modes. Thanks for the video and a great image/lighting! :)

    • @Crimsonengine
      @Crimsonengine  6 років тому

      It doesn't have auto ISO like a DSLR, but it does have a 'Auto Iris' control that will adjust your exposure for you with the aperture. The internal ND is also awesome if you're going to interiors to exteriors in a doc context. Its a perfect camera for what your talking about. Good luck!

    • @AANasseh
      @AANasseh 6 років тому

      Thanks for the reply. But I often have to film myself in run and gun situations, meaning I have to put the camera out there on a Tripod very quickly and go stand in front of it and talk. So, no one would be operating the camera. While WiFi would be an option, I currently can count on either my GH5 or 6Dmkii with auto ISO to get good exposure on my face. GH5 is awesome in every way for that reason but I had to buy the 6Dii only for the DPAF (also, I have all of Canon's L Primes). So, I was hoping the C200 would be able to do the same thing; but seems like I can't count on it to set exposure by just standing in front of it. Thank you for taking the time to reply to my previous comment.

      No worries :) It doesn't - the 120p internal mp4 is pretty crunchy. I've been having more luck shooting the raw 60p and slowing it down in post. If you want to do superslow mo, this isn't your camera.

  • @albatrizzle
    @albatrizzle 6 років тому

    I've been using the c200 for a while now and can attest that the mp4 quality is pretty damn good. The 8bit vs 10bit argument comes down to this - will you be needing to push the colour grade often? That's where 10bit shines. If not then the c200's mp4 will look as good as 10bit. Also - if you're grading then perhaps your client should be paying for RAW workflow anyways.

  • @TillThenPlease

    Thanks for the video! One question I had was, the sharpness of the image also seemed become more blurry with the 8bit (not just a loss of colours). Does the downgrade to 8bit also make the image's edges less sharp? Not just less colour information?

    • @Crimsonengine
      @Crimsonengine  3 роки тому +1

      You can't sharpen the 8 bit in post as much because of the compression artifacts. It also has 1/10th the color of the 12 bit

    Is it true that the C200 does not shoot 24fps at 1080? The specs all say that the lowest frame rate at 1080 is 30fps and if you want 24fps you need to at least shoot in UHD, 3840 x 2160. I don't even mind the 8-bit 4:2:0, but to alway have to film in 4K to get 24fps, with all the storage and processing power needs that go with it, is almost a deal-breaker for what is otherwise clearly a spectacular camera.

    • @Thomasfrank
      @Thomasfrank 4 роки тому

      I know this comment is old, but the C200 definitely does 24fps in 1080p. I shot everything that way for months before moving to a 4K workflow just recently.

    I understand colors are better in RAW. but why is the RAW in your video sharper aswell?

    • @Crimsonengine
      @Crimsonengine  5 років тому +1

      Because Raw isn't (highly) compressed, you can sharpen it in post and there are no compression artifacts to sharpen as well.

  • @tyroney2
    @tyroney2 6 років тому

    If you took all three clips straight out of the camera, and made sure that all settings (like sharpening, gamut, WB, etc.) were identical, then I don’t think we should be able to see any difference between the 3 here on youtube. Since we’re all watching this on 8-bit monitors, we can’t see the “extra colors,” and all three versions of the file would benefit equally from the extra color information attained from downsampling from UHD to 1080p.
    If you were to color correct or grade the footage, then raw becomes much more valuable, and we could expect to see bigger differences- but for this test, I don’t think we should be seeing any differences if all variables were held constant. You may be testing UA-cam’s ability to compress different codecs and their containers more than anything else (were you to substitute the proper 100mb/s 4K internal footage instead of using placeholder quality proxy footage).

    So many things wrong with this video:
    1. The 4:2:0 8 bit recorded at the same time as raw is a proxy format - it means it has far less bitrate and detail vs the regular uHD you record without RAW simultaneously2. Recording in 2k proxy and comparing it to DCI 4K RAW is completely disningenuous.
    Get your fancy blackmagic, set it to uHD 4:2:0 8 bit and compare that to the RAW CROPPED to uHD. Guarantee it negates nearly all of what we’re seeing here.

      I know that the proxy recording is 2K but are you saying that the 2K proxy recording is different in quality from a regular 2K recording? I don't think it is: I think it's exactly the same quality. I know that the raw is DCI and the proxy / regular HD recording is much lower resolution but I think this video is still useful. I think if you did a regular HD recording (i.e., not a proxy recording) then a raw recording and downsampled both to HD that you'd still get the effect shown in the video above. That is, raw is noticeably better. I only ever shoot raw on my C200 and only use the proxy recording for a backup (and not an ideal back to be sure) so I'd be interested to hear your results.
