Love the Kenner JURASSIC PARK Rex! I'm glad that they brought back the nostalgia and fantasy of JURASSIC PARK that people have missed
If by any chance you happen upon the Grant and Malcolm sets, you (and off-colour Alan!) will have an absolute BLAST with them. Frankly I haven't been more satisfied cracking open a Jurassic toy since perhaps when Mattel first acquired the license. Brilliant analysis!
Ah I hope they show up in the UK soon!
They both look fantastic! I actually thought the Mattel Rex and the Kenner Rex were the same size. Glad you made this comparison video :).
The Kenner "Red Rexy" is one of the greatest toys ever made. It was the single greatest unfulfilled longing of my childhood, and I was overjoyed to finally be able to buy it as a collectible when I was grown up and could finally afford it. I'm still in awe of it.
I'm so glad you were able to track one down! This mirrors my story too - as I couldn't afford the Red Rex on release in 1992/3. Thanks for tuning in! Appreciate the comment
@@JurassicCollectables Haha, yeah, $50 seemed like quite a mountain in 1993.
@@BeforeMoviesSucked That's a lot! I think here in the UK they were £24.99, which easily made it birthday present material rather than a pocket money purchase
I feel like that 4th roar is meant to be a roar that's heard in the distance like in jurassic park when Alan and the kids hear the rex but aren't super close to it
There’s no comparison to big red from Kenner. The fact that so many of them are still in circulation in good condition is a testament to the quality of Kenners rex. But like you I love that Mattel is paying tribute to the history of Jurassic park toys. Seeing the boxes in store with the sunset backdrop and that Kenner style box makes me feel like a kid again
I got one in mint condition and I still have it in its package. I keep it in my closet but I want to get a container to better preserve it. I bought it on Amazon for like 350 I think?
I'm gonna have to disagree. I have seen so many red rexes in absolutely horrid condition or straight up broken. Also to use that for the basis of an argument because time just hasn't passed yet for a certain product is inherently bias. The new red rex is a better toy and figure. It can keep its mouth open, is more accurate, similar quality rubber, better overall sculpt, posing options, and roar affects. The new one is critically superior in almost every way. Now only time will tell how long it lasts, but my guess is a while
@@Reos-Domain well we can agree to disagree. I find the old red rex to be more accurate, better quality rubber, and better overall sculpt. To each their own 🤷♂️
5:53 THOMAS THE TANK ENGINE!!!
this thing is such a great toy; Mattel's finest thus far. Kenner Red Rex is still king but this one is so, so close!
Still have mine 30 years later! just missing the battery cover
The new one is great but I still prefer the old one. Proportions and accuracy matter more to me than gimmicks.
In my opinion the new one is better. Especially its head The 93' has more accurate proportions but the head looks odd than Mattel head sculpt. Mattel head sculpt is more accurate.
The OG Kenner Rex looks better on a shelf. The new one is better for a kid. I think that's kind of perfect. Adult collectors will value the original more, but a new version exists for kids to play with.
Wow, great work Comparing the two Mattel Red Rexes partner, it looks amazing and very nostalgic in my opinion and I’m definitely excited for the Red Rex from Mattel, it’s that impressive in my opinion.
I do adore the Kenner Red Rex but I do think the Mattel Red Rex looks perfect for my collection.
Great job on this JurassicCollectables and keep up the great work and Life Finds A Way with this.
Thank you so much. Very kind words there. Thanks again for tuning in LBT 👍
@@JurassicCollectables, no problem at all partner and it really means a lot and it totally makes my day JurassicCollectables.
I preordered mine. I cannot wait to make this one not only my favorite T.rex, but also my favorite toy period, and ofc, not a defective one at all.
Great comparison! My best friend back in the day had the Kenner red rex- it’s a great toy, but I remember the stomping noise didn’t work anymore after playing with it too much. I love the old rex, but it definitely has its own flaws, like the weird gap by the jaw muscles and the arms being held so far out from the body.
I just got my Mattel anniversary rex in the mail yesterday and really like it so far! The more vibrant color scheme is nice, while still being nostalgic, and I think it will be fun to take photos of.
Ah I'm glad you got one too. All good points about the Kenner Rex! Thanks for tuning in and sharing your story, I enjoyed reading. Best, JC
'93 version looks way better in my opinion. Before watching this video I wanted to get the Mattel red Rex, but now I'm not sure anymore.
Well I'm glad I aided in the decision process - if you do end up getting one they are very nice 👍 Thanks for watching
The new one is clearly better in my opinion. Especially its head. The 93' has good proportions but the head looks odd than Mattel head sculpt.
It doesnt matter what they make.. nothing will ever beat the original 93 line. The sculpts, the colors and the details and pride that went into the production of the figures.. overall better materials, more thought put into the designs and paints and not as fisher-price.. change my mind.
Yeah and the fact the Rex is derived from the production molds. Toys wouldn't have that sort of lineage now unless it's meant to be a prop replica (but that would likely be a collectible). So we were very fortunate back in the 90s. I cherish mine. Thanks for your comment, awesome!
You just praise the old classics too much and fail to see the truth. Clearly the new one is better. Especially its head The 93' has good proportions but the head looks odd than Mattel head sculpt. You should accept the truth. Not just praising the classics too much.
I had the Kenner one. Such an amazing toy.
@@lkungthe-nublarcollector3862hell nah, the new one looks bad. Big azz feet and a goofy face.
MY DEAR FRIEND MISSED YOU AND COLOR ALAN GRANT, IT MADE ME WANT TO CRY AT THE END WHEN COLOR ALAN GRANT SAYS FAREWELL, BIG HUG!
Ah this is very kind 👍. Thanks so much for watching and leaving such a nice message
I'd love either of them! Be it from 1993 or 2023 I'd love to have a red Rex! I hope Matell makes a lost work bull t Rex for lost world when it reaches the big 30
@@k-trashradio5163 That's a fantastic idea!!! I hope they do that
Thanks for tuning in!
I think they’re equally matched.
It's a tough one but I'd say the 93 Kenner Rex is still just slightly better. That being said Mattel still has a hit on their hands and I hope maybe someday we can get a perfect remake that takes the best parts of both and makes the definitive version of the red rex.
I think on sculpt it's hard to beat something sourced from the studio molds. But the new features are fantastic and I would have loved them in 1993. Especially feeding the Rex! Thanks for tuning in as always Night Yoshi
I'll have to disagree with you mate, the new mattel rex has much better overall sculpting, far more accurate, better posing, better sounds in the places given, better features with the tail, balancing, etc. I'm gonna have to take the nostalgia glasses off here
Where do you get this in the United states? Target does not have it at the moment, all I know is that it is in the UK in Smyths toys
They are gradually starting to trickle in to stores in the US - but it does vary per state. The UK did get a head start on these, hopefully they will appear near you soon!
Where is the best place to get the kenner ‘93 and what would be a fair price? Had one as a kid but my mom ran a day care so it got very used and abused.
Mattel Rex also has a softer head than the usual plastic, made from pvc or something similar
Tail is poseable…
And I believe the new red Rex also has the crunching sound that the bull Rex had, if I’m not mistaken
Very good observations!! Thanks for your comment and for tuning in, greatly appreciated 👍
Such an amazing toy! This is a great tribute to such a legendary toy!
Thanks Jeremy! Always great to have you here 👍
@@JurassicCollectables Thanks! I recently became a father, so I'm not as active on UA-cam as before, but I still tune in from afar!
@@JeremyJamesPrutchick Oh congratulations 🎉. That's amazing news. I can relate Jeremy - I too am a Dad. Wishing you all the best and thanks for making time to visit this channel!
Unfortunately those big -T-rexes didn't exist in mainland europe back in the 90's. At least not in France.
Amazon was just a bookstore and frankly, ordering anything on the internet was pretty much a hit or miss, and probably just a very stupid thing to do.
I saw a kid walking by with one, so I knew they existed, but they remained something of an urban myth for a very long time.
Oh wow. That's a bit like series 2 figures here in the UK. I didn't know series 2 existed until I was an adult. Thanks for sharing & watching the video! 👍
Awesome, this may be what warms me up to wanting to get this new figure.
Also Hey JC, I have a question, what do you think of the Amber and Hammond Collections by Mattel, and would you ever purchase/review them ?
I think they are great but these days I tend to wait for signature pieces like this Mattel Rex, as space is always limited 😂. Thanks for the great question and for tuning in 👍
@@JurassicCollectables Ah that’s fair. It’s especially crazy now since it’s the anniversary. 😂
And you’re very welcome 🙂
I'm pretty sure the haunting roar as you call is from one of the scenes (Probably JP2 or JP3) Where the Rex chasing them down off in the distance.
Off colored grant! The return! Lol do you still have the Ian Malcolm figure?
I do indeed! Thank you!
An _EXCELLENT_ comparison (👏)! Although, I can't help but feel that you *kinda* missed the opportunity here to also bring in your Playmates "Primal Rage" Diablo figure; he too is a 'Red Rex.'
Good point! Sadly I no longer have that figure but it was a wonderful one to review. And the game was incredible. Thanks for tuning in as always Velocirapror4You! 👍
@@JurassicCollectables Aww, that’s too bad. Same here, I have fond memories of the game (😊).
You’re welcome (☺️)! Anytime!
@@velociraptor4you3291 In my travels I met someone who worked on the game - they had worked on the digital 2D sprites made from stop motion images! Pretty cool
@@JurassicCollectables Really? That’s AWESOME (🤩)!
I like the old red kenner red 🎉🎉
Great video. ! Is the new red rex worth it?
I think if you don't have either, it's a good opportunity to get a very fun Red Rex. The features make it very playable and it looks good on the shelf 👍. Thank you!
I guess the Mattel Red Rex could be the equivalent of the juvenile from the novel?
Yes exactly - the original Red Rex by Kenner was created before the film had completed shooting so they used novel references unless they had concept artwork to go by
Well its an hard battle. Kenner’s scale and proportions are movie accurate but its less flexible and posable. On the other hand, Mattel’s can chew stuff and its head is way better and it definitely looks like the female Rex we see in the movie. Unfortunately it looks smaller and with way too bigger feet. It seems Winston’s maquette is still the best.
I like the Mattel T.rex
When you think about 2009 Jurassic Park orange alpha bull tyrannosaurus Rex get the mattel form treatment soon because I love to see get the chance
Hmmm I got a serious question about the Jurassic Park Red T-Rex from The first Jurassic Park movie I rather see the Red T-Rex from in the first Jurassic Park movie
The original is 100% better than this new "feet-saur", it´s more paw than body
Really interesting how read yours is. I just picked one up today and mine is much closer to the original in a brick sort of red color you are 1993 classic is extremely bright red
Day and night, the two models is not even comparable. Two totally differently toys.
Kenner is better ❤
Kenners red rex is superior.
Look past nostalgia the Mattel red Rex can roar keep it’s mouth open and eat small Dinosaurs and people.
@@korbanpug4191 true not to forget that it's also meant for kids.👍 Both are good but I prefer 1993 Kenner rex.
In my opinion the new one is clearly better. Especially its head The 93' has more accurate proportions but the head looks odd than Mattel head sculpt. Mattel head sculpt is more accurate.
@@lkungthe-nublarcollector3862It's not really debatable, the Kenner Rex is more accurate. It's literally cast off of the Stan Winston maquette
@@amastodont9680 Bruh. It's just in terms of proportions and details. But the head isn't even accurate. Mattel head sculpt is literally more accurate than kenner head sculpt.
Is it just me or do the Kenner Rex and jp 30 Mattel one look similar to what Rexy looked like in the book?
Yes! This is actually what happened in the design process. The toys were developed while the film was still in production, so the designs weren't yet locked down. So Kenner went off the novel description to start producing the toys in advance
@@JurassicCollectables thx I thought it was me or a coincidence.
Its not a David JC review until off-color Alan is dismissed from the review table.
🤣🤣🤣 he is always done after the review. Has miniature plastic digsites to attend to
I prefer your reviews over the other guy. Sorry. I don't mean to say the other guy is worse, he just not gets to me with his voice and presentation. I wish you would do more reviews as you once did.
I have the bull trex
New comment (apologies), but I honestly see the possibility, and I hope that’s the case, of Mattel making a toy out of the unreleased Gulper T. rex for next year. Considering some of the newly released anniversary sets have some homages to unreleased Kenner prototypes, it seems much more likely and I truly hope so.
That would be amazing! Great idea. If they did they may use this figure as a basis and repaint it...
@@JurassicCollectables honestly I’d say they should go for a new and slightly better proportioned sculpt (maybe larger too since that was the idea).
Though now that I think about it, it almost feels like it might not be 100% likely since they gave this red rex the slit belly, but I’ll still hope they’ll do it.
@@yuyaricachimuel555 I think it's a great idea and wouldn't be surprised it's on their list of names to use
@@JurassicCollectables Hopefully 😊 and the demon Carnotaurus too (even though they do have one in the mainline for Dominion)
And maybe a young rex also
That trex is called buck
The new Rex will swallow 3.3/4 scale human figures.
I got the 1993 Red Rex in very good condition (I should make a video) and.. I’m very careful with it, don’t want any damage so I’m not playing with it that much and it neck had got bent in a suitcase but some how recovered and not break? The neck of the red Rex is fragile which is a huge flaw. This new red Rex sounds great for playing cuz I don’t have to worry as much. Plus another rubber dinosaur. Btw my Red Rex rubber is quite soft! I was shocked, because my 1993 Triceratops rubber is a little harder which is a bit better. Anyway I really wish I could get that Mattel red Rex but I’m not sure am I allowed cuz I live in a van and space is so important, I do have a bag and a Mattel Rex does fit, not Kenners Rex sadly.. But what about the potential other figures are gonna go? 😂 I’ll probably be skipping on her sadly, I hope there will be other 93 classics coming to Australia. Btw, I just got two new Dino tracker figures, a Nothosaurus and Kronosaurus. And what should I say at the start of the video? Also do u have any Jurassic video ideas? I want to make some theory videos and stuff. Planning one about “Forgotten Dinosaurs In The Jurassic Franchise”. Need other original ideas, one of “What happened to the ducks in Jurassic park?” Not joking, there’s ducks in the visitor centre and no one ever talks about it!
I like the ducks idea! Go with that 👍. There will be smaller figures in the 93 classic wave perhaps you could get the Alan Grant set? Great purchases! Those will make fine reviews. Thanks for watching & commenting! Best, JC 👍
@@JurassicCollectables Not sure will they be coming to Australia. Hope they do, the red Rex is in Mr Toy World which is our Aussie local toy shop and their toys are a little expansive! The red Rex is 99$ Aussie dollars, however they do have some rare stuff and play sets that aren’t available from other shops. Also, what should I say at the start of the video?
I’m 14 and I got my grubby hands on a of Kenner red Rex and og triceratops from my teacher and I didn’t have to pay a penny.
Treasure them! You are very lucky indeed. Thanks for tuning in and telling us your news. Always great to hear
@@JurassicCollectables the T rex still stomps.
🎫📼📹🎥🎬 KENNER VS MATTEL 🐱🐈🐉🐲
I wish you your KennerT rex
Paint
the 93 one looks infinitely cooler. the new one looks like some cheap plastic bad knockoff
You just praise the old classics too much and fail to see the truth. Clearly the new one is better. Especially its head. The 93' has good proportions but the head looks odd than Mattel head sculpt. You should accept the truth. Not just praising the classics too much. Lmao
