I use to play bass for several groups 55 years or so ago, I always wanted to play guitar but one thing lead to the next. Now at 71, I decided to learn. To my surprise, I am coming along quite well with daily practice. Thank you so much for your lessons on the songs I love the most.
I am so stoked. I am an old dead head and also love Phish. Live in Sydney now so don't catch many shows. I am 43 years old and started picking up my 11 yr old school guitar 3 months ago. Literally learning to play from Marty and Guitar Jamz...The sound of FOD actually coming of my guitar now. What a moment... THANKS and keep it coming!
Hey Marty, love your work. Also love reading the comments on your lessons, as they're usually so friendly and positive. It's a nice change from most of the rest of the internet. You should do a Tennessee Jed tutorial. It's a great slow song with an easy lick and a simple chord progression, but as always with Garcia there are some great flourishes you could attempt to teach us humble students.
first of all, just like to say thanks Marty for being my guitar teacher for 5 years now! I don't watch your videos as much anymore (since i've progressed all thanks to you) but it is very refreshing when I do come back to your sweet goateed face with the fedora on top. Second of all, i do agree and that is why im here. Keep it up with the good jams man!
Marty, thanks for this lesson and your Bertha lesson on the other channel. Having seen over 250 shows with Jerry, and only recently picked up the six string (played bass on and off for 25 years by ear) seriously at 59 years old, your lessons have gotten me actually playing guitar in less than 6 months and sounding like songs since I know the lyrics to just about every dead/Jerry/Phil/Bobby song by heart. Your style of teaching is fun and intuitive if the chords are practiced. Started watching and by then end of the 3rd time I had the song down. THANKS Bro! More dead when you get to it. G
Thanks again. You are my favorite beginner/intermediate teacher. From your instructions I can get the core of what I want to do, and then go on my own. Great job!
i freaking love you. i've been a classical violinist since I was 3. I'm 40 now, and need to switch it up. i can't play a lick of guitar, but im on day 2 of learning and your videos are the best.
Isaac Tepper damn I remember starting guitar at that age. Took me like 2 years to get decent, and 4 to get good. Constantly broke my perception of what’s good to become a better guitarist. Keep it up
Isaac Tepper Keep learning my friend, you have time on your side. I knew of this song at your age, but didn’t pick up a guitar until I was about seventeen. One regret I have in life, is that I wish I’d spent more time doing what made me happy, playing was one of those things. All the best mate.
One of the best videos I've seen on FOD. Been trying to figure it out for years. Thanks mucho!! Heard they were forced to take this verse out on recording. Hence, "Got a wife in Chino" verse is in twice. Borrowed from the Devil and I've borrowed from my friends. Devil gives me twenty bills, my friends just give me ten.
Been watching you for a few years now, I can't believe I haven't subscribed. I definitely owe you for your gratitude and love for teaching. It helped me tremendously expand my skills I developed on my own, with the help of many great musicians I look up to including yourself, man. You've got my full support and promotion.
Great to see you back, sometimes I used to watch your lessons even if I didn't want to learn the song. Just got into the Dead recently and I'm glad I found your new channel, definitely will check out your recent videos, keep up the great work!
Big thank you to John Dawson for writing this here lick. I'm a beginner who just loves and lives for music and thank you for creating this and all of your channels.
I love you... you’re the best. I’ve learned SO much from you. You are like an old friend... thank you for your humor and generosity. Much respect, brother.
Very nice I have a observation I notice when you rythem and strumming are spot on your pick glides out your thumb them you manipulate the pick back and there it goes again with the rythem it is so cool to watch the picking hand. And I love this song and I heard to leave the pick loose were someone could knock it out all you great players do that drop picks hang loose I'm glad we have an instructor like you who has the chops and the skills thank you.
Thanks Marty! Long time subscriber. You have had much coolness to my set lists over the years. Hoping to play this tune at my gig tomorrow night. That Taylor...so sick.
Hey, first of all, thank you, I'm a bass player who likes to play guitar for my own pleasure, and to be able to jam with my son your videos have been of great help . like your selection of songs, and your style. thanks again, keep up the great work. ..
Great lesson Marty, thanks! Going through a Dead phase, great resource. Watch that little finger extending when not in use, want to keep that guy near the board ready for action!
marty thanks so much for covering this one. I could never get the walk up to the G-C jam. you helped alot. now do sugaree please and sing the words. my friend has told me numerous times that even if you dont like your own voice, which obviously you do not, its really helpful to us even if you cant sing, to arrange the music around a voice. Now then. get on Sugaree....
Great lesson! Thank you! Would LOVE to see more 'Jam Band'-type lessons. I know you've said you were really into Phish when you were younger. I learned about Lettuce from your videos. PLEASE do more of these types of lessons! I'm a Jam-Band wanna be guitarist! :-D
Marty, after watching your videos for a while now, I am proud to say to others that I do use The Schwartz ( spaceballs thing ) I have listened to your songs and covers, you are awesome man. My aspiration is to be better. It's working thanks to your tutorials. I have even ventured into a dropped D tuning and had fun experimenting with some Rolling Stones tunes.
Marty could you do a full series of the Grateful Dead? In the series focus on lead stuff too.. like soloing over Friend of the devil for example. more dead stuff would be incredible!
Thanks Marty. I just found your channel (and subscribed) and I agree heartily with those who have already commented -- more Grateful Dead, please! West L.A. Fadeaway? Great stuff, thanks again.
Thanks for supporting me right here at "MartyMusic" and I love all the Grateful Dead Requests! Not sure i you know I actually got to play with Phil Lesh last year? anyway peace and love, peace and love, more BRAND NEW videos coming right here to "MartyMusic"
What would be really nice Marty, is if u included a link in the description for the tab you were using. That would make it a lot easier but other than that, I love your channel!
This is really helpful. Thanks! But there is one Am chord Marty missed. In the bridge, at the line "and if he catches up with me, I'll spend my life in jail" the chords are Am, C, D
What about the “Got two reasons why I cry on each lonely night” part? I believe there are different chords to that part of the song. Nevermind figured it out
Marty your the man, got a repeat gig in two weeks and the customer requested I do some GD, thank you, this rocks in drop DADGBE, try it (back it with a G-harp)!
Anytime I'm learning a song, I say " Wonder if Marty has a video for it?" and he ALWAYS does.
More Dead, please! Some Jerry Garcia lead tips and tricks would be the best thing ever!
I shall Bob, I shall!
Sweet!
DUDE IVE BEEN WAITING FOR YOU
Box Of Rain please!!
any an all Jerry ballads (~);}

This is a great lesson for a great song man, cheers
I have seen people go from the c to the g vs c to am, but I trust in Marty
It's a good thing, too, because if they're going to the G, they are wrong.
Great job as always Marty! ✡️
Thanks so much for this lesson Marty. Marty Music is the best on youtube for guitar!
Thanks for this lesson, you helped me a lot
Its so good that u show little variations. Great stuff to add to my repertoire. The guitar u play is cool, but u r cooler .
Yo Marty! Awesome lessons. Thanks for all of them! How about Althea?!
Do you hit the low E 3rd fret before the A minor? It sounds really off with the jump up.
This is really helpful. Thanks! But there is one Am chord Marty missed. In the bridge, at the line "and if he catches up with me, I'll spend my life in jail" the chords are Am, C, D
