Posting your review on the final cutscene for the games first act. Dragon's Dogma doesn't really act like most RPGs combat wise and that is because the combat is more like a character action game, it also includes mounting and part break mechanics that I have yet to see replicated. This in particular is why I like it so much more than Skyrim or the Witcher. The game encourages you to mess around with your chosen moves and extend the basic combos with them and figure out how that will aid you in battle. The story characters are very much you get out what you put in. Most people I know who didn't like the game stuck mostly with main quests and didn't really explore much. If you slow down and take your time to go back and explore every nook and crany of the game and do the side quests you learn a lot about the the game's world and the people living in it. The argument that the world is small is valid, compared to many open world RPGs the world is very small. The linearity argument is somewhat valid because the natural landscape of the game sort of funnels you into the next area while making the higher level areas more difficult to get to. However like the story if you slow down and just take a look around you'll find little things here and there that are interesting. Once you get to a high enough level you can very much freely explore the game but the main exploration is best done through quests and side-quests in order to learn more about the lore of the world and its people. The world services the quests instead of being a big empty wasteland like Skyrim. Replayability comes with the Dark Arisen Bitterblack Isle stuff, and completing more side-quests that you might have missed. Bitterblack basically requires NG+ and even then it is hard to complete. I know that it's not everyone's cup of tea but those are the reasons I like it.
This is the usual problem people are having. They rush through the game and think "That was fast" and then complain about the lore instead of looking for it, as it is scattered around the world in pieces, just as in Dark Souls. Grigori is definitely one of my favorite villains due to him being THE DRAGON, not just a cool firebreathing lizard, but the dragon that challenges the hero of the story, as it is his purpose. Simplicity sometimes is beauty when done correctly. Still, game has it's flaws, it was very rushed for example and missing many features and areas that could've been, yet it still remains in my top 5 RPGs of all time, and I've been playing RPGs since 90s. Also please, do not use Bethesda as some kind of "Ultimate best RPG" definition.
