@@sethbettwieser They are my sponsor, so take everything I say with a grain of salt but... if you like War Thunder... is that a bad thing? I mean not every game that has WW2 planes is automatically a War Thunder clone. Last I checked War Thunder isn't on mobile, so for the people who like War Thunder but want a mobile option... I can't say that's necessarily a bad thing.
@@Bluedrake42 surprisingly, WT has had a mobile version for over a year now. Unsurprisingly, the controls are really bad. But the reason I say it looks like a knockoff isn't just because "plane game," it's the ticker bars as a win condition, the compass/radar circle in the top right, the way the other players have their username and plane name above them and distance below them, and how targeted players have 4 quarter circles around them. If you removed the mobile-specific controls from the screen, I honestly wouldn't realize it's not War Thunder for at least a few minutes. Edit: also, the damage indicator in the bottom left.
Hey drake! Just a moment of your time please, with the OHD development as inspiration i’ve started working on my own passion project game, an idea i’ve had in mind for like 15 years… Only problem is i barely have an idea what i’m doing 😂 i got the basics ofc, but as someone who’s done it, do you have any good do’s and don’t? If you don’t, then thanks anyway for taking the time to read! Looking forward to the future of OHD! All the best man! 🍻
It's $140 now. This is also done completely in blueprints, so it's not really up to industry standards, it looks good sure, but it will not have the best performance in a large project.
I don't wanna rain on anyone's parade here, but I've been hearing the same [stuff] for 15+ years - so I'm just going to be honest here. I have a strong feeling that the "saturation of tactical games on the market" that you're talking about, is mostly going to end up consisting of "early access" tech-demos that are (basically) assets from the marketplace, "bashed" together to make a quick buck and then be abandoned. I understand that it makes it easier to develop games, this is what I would have wanted for game devs back in 09. In todays world however, with everyone desperate to hustle the next man out of money - I don't think that making it THIS easy to make a game look good, is a good thing. No offense to projects like OHD - but for the people that think that systems / templates like this will be used for bigger projects on the level of Arma, Squad, etc. - I just think you're wrong.
I mostly agree. The best use for these sorts of things is small teams with some good ideas to be able to put together a working proof of concept will end up polished enough they can pitch to a larger team with maybe an investor or publisher. Then they can more-or-less start over with their own assets and just a little bit of the code. The problem is these days, as you say, it's easier to just pitch to the gaming public and then snowball your kludge project into a half-baked snowman: one which will melt after a few months.
the template seems good. i'll check it out when people use it to make an actual game with story and level design etc. but otherwise, i won't probably download a template to run around.
This is HUGE for people like me that struggle to have a starting vision for games. But seeing this I just got a lot of ideas for a game I wish to make. I just wish I was proficient at coding, never been able to learn programming outside of microcontrollers.
So I see some benefits to things like this: it allows smaller groups who maybe aren't experienced game devs to workshop ideas as proof of concept. Skip to the meat and potatoes of the specific differentiators about your game idea vs spending time trying to get a baseline worked out and adding features and stuff that are common now. Then if you can hit on something really fun, maybe it will be worth investing more heavily into making it your own and streamlined with some serious devs. For sure it will be boring if they're all clones of each-other or clones of old games but with more graphics. But it will be interesting if we are seeing experimentation. The differentiators will be how the game modes are setup, how the maps play with size and detail, how the scenarios shake out, how the health systems and resource systems and respawn systems all connect. I see Op Harsh Doorstop and think that it is laying that same sort of groundwork for the large-scale shooters in the space between Insurgency and Squad. This sort of template seems poised to do things in the realm between Ready or Not and Ground Branch, but all of these starting points seem to be pretty scalable.
If we had good games coming out of this, I would be excited, but sadly we have not had many good games coming out of the UE asset flip generation. This template does look amazing, though. But we have yet to have games that rival the likes of Soldier of Fortune from back in the late 90s, or anything as tactical as the original Rainbow Six from back in the late 90s or anything unique and original. A lot of it is just ho-hum derivative ideas recyling the same concepts over and over again. I would love more combined arms games set in urban environments with actual NPCs, or scavenge and exploration based tactical shooters with survival elements in a sci-fi setting, or just anything other than the standard-fare PvP/extraction shooter/battle royale that we keep getting that are either mimics of Call of Duty or variations of Call of Duty.
You want to see stuff that doesnt have a market lmao. The amount of people who own a 4090 is 0.91% of steam users and people who own VR headset is 1.60% going off steamhardware.
Great video and congrats on your video sponsor. I agree with you on the topics you covered. We most likely will see an oversaturation of tactical shooters due to this new template being released, but it looks incredible and I'm sure some hidden gems will be produced by passionate developers. Hopefully this also sends a signal to AAA gaming that realistic tactical shooters are still in demand and are ready for a renaissance. I'll be looking forward to your videos showcasing which games that use this tech in the future that I should be paying attention to.
Speaking from my own experience, templates are not the solution to make a game but is better to make your own templates. Sure those already made can help to start but still if you can't understand how it is made is quite hard to tweak it to your liking. Also having a good looking game that plays well is not enough to be entertaining and heavy hitter. You need a good game loop that is fun and interesting for the players. Games in COD multiplayer stile is not that fun to play and why you should play an indie version when you have a huge selection from AAA studios already? While making a game in FPS style but with other interesting mechanics like from the survival, strategy and roguelike genres is the solution for a good gaming experience.
Hey! New video just dropped! by the way, whats up with ohd playtest? Did I miss it or something? Hey, I've also said this under previous video, but got no response. (There was one comment about performance issues on modded servers, this was my reply) "by the way, OHD overhaul actually improves performance. For example, post process overlays such as *Bleeding overlay, supression blur, and optic scope* blur really lower my fps by 15-20% OHD overhaul improved *bleeding and supression* . The only reamaining part is Optic blur. I have actually looked at the node scripts in the SDK, and I think that *Lens distortion* and *chromatic abberation* are the reason. They have a really complex calulation algorythm. Also specific particles like Dirt impact could be optimised" Some people even say that "they cant snipe without turning their game into a powerpoint presentation"
You find the coolest game things. I really like alternative games if you will. I am equally saturated by the sameness of what’s out there with some exceptions.
Fr tho I do know you're pretty truthful and informative. I dont think you'd take a sponsor like that if it wasn't at least interesting. Wings of heros on the other hand was disappointing. My guy shoot for Gaijin, you can do war thunder!!

Follow bluedrakes link in description, sadly its only a "Demo".
We dont get the full pack just one assault rifle...
It’s not really a challenge to transfer blueprints to code, the project is a template after all, being in blueprint makes it easy to modify

I wouldn't use Squad as an example

the template seems good. i'll check it out when people use it to make an actual game with story and level design etc. but otherwise, i won't probably download a template to run around.
The crosshair and speed make it seem more like COD template. But I'm sure those can be tweaked.
This is HUGE for people like me that struggle to have a starting vision for games.

I just wish I was proficient at coding, never been able to learn programming outside of microcontrollers.
I mean, just use ai, they are going to get better and so are you.
There's never been an easier time.
Reminds me of Ground Branch. Can't argue .. looks good
Reminds me a lot of cod imo, wouldn’t really fit the milsim genre the best.
this is gonna be so good to use in CQB levels at OHD

It's not fair to compare triple A studios who have hundreds of employees with solo devs and small indie teams.
Personally I don't give a shit about flat games anymore, I want to see shit like this with that level of quality in VR at this point...

Its just the realistic version of the low poly animated modern weapon pack from Infima Games on UE5
