This gives me Goosebumbs. The music man. All the things Arthur said. All he did for the gang, just to be ratted out by Micah and Dutch. A masterpiece of a game.
I know this is late but the line John gives toward the beginning: "Micah Bell, I'm just here for Micah Bell." You can hear the calculated rage in his voice, and I love that. All of the lines from this mission coming from John are filled with rage. Phenomenal job from the VA's all around for this game.
It is sad to see dutch go from this very loved and respected by his peers type guy to being completely broken and lost. Amazing writing though this series.
My first playthrough I got the help John ending with low honor. Let me tell you I was so enraged at how Micah killed Arthur that I stayed up all night practically speed running the epilogue. I finally got to this mission and I was legitimately furious. Every kill was personal. Every yell from John came out of my heart. I’ve never been more satisfied at the end of a video game than gunning down Micah Bell.
The first time I played that mission I shot him 6 times in the face, watching a guy with a bunch of holes for a face laughing at you is kinda harrowing hahahaha
@@ishanc8565 Yeah exactly, I do believe Dutch is a good Guy deep down but sustained a brain injury during one of the robberies which clouds his judgement and leads him in to bad decisions like trusting Micah over Arthur during the end of the game but he ultimately thinks he is doing right if you get me.
i'd say that the closest hair options to the original John are: right parted fade - length 5 beard - length 2 but my personal preference is: right parted - length 7 beard - length 2
I always have John wear Arthur’s hat throughout the epilogue up until John gears up for this mission, where I equip John’s RDR1 hat. Wearing Arthur’s hat first to lightly represent both John’s inability to find closure in Arthur’s death and also John’s struggle with moving on from being the outlaw rebel punk and more into the honest working law-abiding father (also John needs a hat because he doesn’t wear one with dedication for most of RDR2, kind of him trying to find his own identity, him only taking after Arthur for the sake of it, making an identity of living in the past.) This mission and John’s RDR1 hat to me always represented the first existence of “RDR1 John Marston”. Finally moving on from the past by destroying any fragments of it, and it being something that John does primarily *alone*. Which I think is the two biggest differences in both RDR1’s and RDR2’s (John’s and Arthur’s) gameplay and character themes. RDR1 has a major emphasis on gunfighting and very little on relationships with the protagonist, it’s about having achieved a dream, but destroying an old nightmare threatening to take it all away- and you, as John, power through the whole thing alone (with every mission becoming an absolutely insane shooting gallery with dozens upon dozens of enemies). John Marston takes on the bulk of one nation’s Army halfway through the game, and fights another head on at the end, to put the amount of combat in RDR1 in perspective. In RDR2, the story is way more centered around the gang and the relationships between all of the main cast, and while there is plenty of fighting, there is also a much larger variety of “cowboy living” or “gang family time” missions, and even in the combat missions, you almost always have the aid of other gang members (even if they don’t do much, it’s the principle). You fight (far smaller enemy numbers most of the time in comparison to RDR1) to escape the nightmare to hopefully achieve the dream. I think American Venom is designed to feel like “a RDR1 mission making a guest appearance in RDR2”, in more ways than one. Wearing Arthur’s hat for this, just feels to me like I’m robbing the narrative’s opportunity to transition from “tough but soft hearted Uncle Arty and outlaw punk younger brother John” to “Harbinger of Death in the dying days of the West” that this mission desperately tries to materialize for the audience. Closing the game after this mission and jumping straight into RDR1 without some extra flair to illustrate John’s transcendence from the gang and the Old West would only lead people having to believe John just got over the shit one evening on his porch after piling some hay and woke up the next morning an unstoppable badass just waiting to throw on a duster coat and wear his gun with a purpose again. People don’t want to let go of Arthur, and neither did John. But there is much more to RDR’s story, and it gets way more badass. Sometimes you have to let go to move forward. Really, RDR2’s epilogue ends earlier to me, with Jim Milton Rides Again through American Venom being less of an epilogue and more of a prologue.
Rockstar gave us all game to love and appreciate Arthur. Showed you his strengths and weaknesses. His death hurt. And coming back as John was like salt in the wound, knowing you as the player carried on Arthur’s will through John. But with one mission, Rockstar reminded us why their best character is and always was John
I did this mission wearing Arthur's old clothes, the clothes I've worn throughout my whole playthrough, just so the Rat can see the ghost of his past and the reaper of his death.
Maybe I'll use a nice Outfit Arthur made for Winter and that he only used that. Would be awesome to do that. I need to remember before getting off my horse to do it. Because it changes his outfit after leaving Strawberry mid cutscene.
I played this mission, wearing Arthur's hat, using Arthur and John's revolvers (well the cartleman I always used as Arthur) and did not run at all. I walked through the entire shootout without taking cover till I reached Micah. Combined with the music it felt so damn badass.
This mission felt most similar to the the mission from the first game where you travel to Mexico on a raft shooting a whole ass gallery of Spanish Soldiers. Loved that mission.
The line 'you keep killing people dutch' delivered by Arthur really shook me to the bone just the tone of his voice when he said it really said more than word ever could
Just realized when john mentioned arthur. Dutch starting to lose his charm and confidence. Instead he completely lost word and drown on his own thoughts
I cant remember where I saw it but on a different video someone wrote, "when Hosea died, dutch went crazy. When Arthur died, Dutch went INSANE." It's stuck with me since.
@@Vomer0 it's written in the stars man... his destiny was to be evil since hosea is dead. Or maybe the time he met micah but still the man's changed. And its for the worst..
Dumb Broke but the thing is though in the first game Dutch would probably have NEVER even thought about coming after John Literally the only reason John goes after Dutch is because of fucking Ross Hell Dutch even warns him that Ross will go back on his word before he jumps off the cliff But it is John that finally makes Dutch realize that he can’t continue to live the life he lived in the old days, that his kind isn’t welcome in this new world, but since he’s known no other life besides that of an outlaw, he jumps
The way I see this mission is that it was always uneccessary. Dutch was always there to kill Micah. Leaving the money there kind of proves it. This was a revenge mission for Dutch, he wasn't there to re-team up with Micah he was there because he finally realised Micah was the reason everything went up in flames. Arthur told John to move on with his life. He had a family, a homestead, he had left this life behind. And if John had actually moved on then he could have been redeemed, that's the real tragic part of it. But John couldn't let it go, he needed to get revenge himself. So he goes up that mountain, kills a few dozen more people, just to shoot Micah after Dutch had already killed him. And what is his reward? To tip himself off to the Pinkertons and Agent Ross. Ross then tracks him down, blackmails him into killing the rest of the gang, and eventually gets killed by Ross in the end as the final loose end. A series of events that sets his son on the same path of perpetual violence. No one gets the redemption they were looking for, no one gets out. But John was so, so close.
Dude the fact that you timed it so well that after John says "MICAH BELL IM JUST HERE FOR MICAH BELL" the trumpets and guitars start playing. You're a legend my guy.
One of the most outstanding missions ive ever played, had chills and shed a small tear when i got micah wearing arthurs hat and using his og gunslinging outfit
I remember some dude tackling me from behind making me lose the hat. After shooting him about 12 times, I spent like 2 minutes looking for the hat and I couldn't find it. So I loaded the last checkpoint. It's THAT important.
I had one of those hats from the soldiers in guarma n I took it but on the mission back to the house after the emotional horse ride I got killed on accident n lose it😢
Micah is actually built like a brickhouse on the inside of the coat he wears. If you look closely at him during the Guarma act he looks like he has the torso of a grizzlybear with all that hair and muscle.
Man this game is a fucking masterpiece. I always loved John since RDR1 but Arthur was just so special that somehow surpassed all my love for John! Legends of Real West!
Love how Dutch puts his guns back on his holster after shooting Micah. As in knowing John will shoot Micah for him. Both taking turns at getting back at Bell
This is one of the greatest missions in any video game ever! The soundtrack the setting the context the dialogue the action everything is just perfectly engineered for the perfect revenge mission this mission is just so dang awesome is
I just realized something. So when John comes to the mountain, he’s obviously there to kill Micah: to avenge Arthur. NOW when John asked Dutch what he’s doing here, Dutch replies with “Same as you, I suppose.” That right there fully makes me believe that even if John or Sadie never went to that mountain up, Dutch would’ve still been the one to shoot Micah. I think that after “The 2 got together again like old times” Dutch was simply thinking of ways best to end Micah. I know this video is like kind of old now, but I’d like to hear someone’s thoughts on this.
You're kinda right about that. Dutch is a vengeful man. He was there to kill Micah. Some people think that he was there to avenge Arthur but I don't think so. He was there because Micah betrayed him, not the gang, HIM. He always took everything personal and I don't think that Dutch care too much about the gang since the beginning. I have a feeling that he saw the gang as tools. Anyway, Micah was going to sell Dutch to the pinkerton right there but John showed up. Pd: I literally finished the game yesterday for the first time xD
I think Dutch cares about the gang in the beginning but then slowly he wanted more money. I feel his need to try to make more money and prove that he was better then his mistake in black water really tore the gang apart sadly. He just didn’t listen to anyone towards the end of the gang he was just really selfish
@@chewychomp1627 You got many points right there. But there are also some subtle signs in the beginning. I feel like Dutch was pretending to be someone he wasn't. Maybe It was way before blackwater. Hosea was the one who "control" him in a certain way, otherwise he just messed up things everytime.
Hosea was one of my favorite characters because he actually cares about the gang and the people in it. He would always try to give Dutch advice on how to run the gang but Dutch would not listen and call him an old man or something. It’s a shame. If hosea was the leader things would have Bennett went down the way they did. Since the beginning Hosea was the voice of reason
Not a single moment of any game I’ve ever played has given me such a sense of purpose as this segment. As if my real life depended on seeing this through to the end. Absolutely masterful! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 The last act in TLOU1 comes close, but hits different. A brotherly bond versus that of a father and daughter. Honor and justice drives you in RDR2, determined desperation in TLOU.
My grandpa used to be a gunslinger in the 1800’s Like John Marston, he told me stories about them when we always camp and I always liked them and his stories were kinda related to a RDR2 story but sadly he passed away😢😢 R.I.P Grandpa I will miss your stories about your life of a gunslinger.
So much for Arthur's words: "I want you to run and don't look back." "Revenge is an idiot's game." How true. Look at what seeking vengeance cost John Marston in the end? He got killed, his wife died from grief, and his son wound up an orphan, the very fate Arthur gave his life for to prevent.
It ain't revenge, its avenging. Revenge would be taking it out on somebody who did you dirty before. Avenging is taking it out on somebody who did somebody else dirty before.
Tbf John was already doomed even before going out for Micah, if the theory that Dutch was also there to kill Micah true then Micah would have died anyway and Ross would have eventually caught both John and Dutch.
Yes. In my opinion which may not be valid. In the credits u see agent Milton ask round valentine, where he met sadie, if he didn't meet saide he would not have killed micah and dutch would not know of John's where abouts. Leading them to hunt everywhere. And by the time they probably found him , he would be near death.
“The true way to play American Venom” Doesn’t shoot Micah in the balls six times while in dead-eye That’s the TRUE way to play it, always go for the balls. Always
0:07, If you ask me, this was the moment John turned into the savage badass we knew from the first game. A man with good intentions, but a hard man. Coarse, and quiet. He knew it might be a mistake to go kill Micah. He knew the risks. "Revenge is a fool's game." Arthur told John himself. He knew he would want him to live on and prosper, Micah be damned. But he charged up that mountain and killed him anyway, because he loved his brother, and couldn't let that rat piece of shit Micah go on living. I hate to say I probably would have done the same. Consequences be damned.

Even though the game indicates that this mission was the start of John Marston’s downfall, (revenge is a fools game and Ross tracing Micah’s death to John) I’m sure we can all agree that it was soooo worth it
To me, the message is that revenge is a fool's game, but we are all fools at some point in our lives.
I think Ross still will track John, even he didn't killed micah, because in rdr1 after John did what Ross need from him he still kill him, because he was van der linde gang's member and I think Ross still will tracks John because he needs to capture and kill all famous van der linde gang members (Dutch,Bill,Javier,John)
Ross knew exactly where Marston was. John signed for the loan in his own name. Ross was just biding his time.

@Master Farr but John does age between the start & end of rdr2. also since when did he get fatter? don't you mean slightly more muscular? haha
I always have John wear Arthur’s hat throughout the epilogue up until John gears up for this mission, where I equip John’s RDR1 hat. Wearing Arthur’s hat first to lightly represent both John’s inability to find closure in Arthur’s death and also John’s struggle with moving on from being the outlaw rebel punk and more into the honest working law-abiding father (also John needs a hat because he doesn’t wear one with dedication for most of RDR2, kind of him trying to find his own identity, him only taking after Arthur for the sake of it, making an identity of living in the past.)
This mission and John’s RDR1 hat to me always represented the first existence of “RDR1 John Marston”.

Yea I think that too honestly. Micah was a dead man either way.

I will miss your stories about your life of a gunslinger.
So much for Arthur's words: "I want you to run and don't look back."
"Revenge is an idiot's game." How true. Look at what seeking vengeance cost John Marston in the end? He got killed, his wife died from grief, and his son wound up an orphan, the very fate Arthur gave his life for to prevent.
yeah but he bought them a few years of heaven on earth at least. we all gotta die sometime.
John didnt die because of this tho he died because he was tricked by Ross to do his dirty work and this was unrelated
Yes. In my opinion which may not be valid. In the credits u see agent Milton ask round valentine, where he met sadie, if he didn't meet saide he would not have killed micah and dutch would not know of John's where abouts. Leading them to hunt everywhere. And by the time they probably found him , he would be near death.
