I only ever noticed this in fighting games, and I didn't think much of it because I figured, yeah, when you're in a profession like fighting where blood loss is practically inevitable, your blood type would be relevant information.
Those Mortal Kombat folks must go through maybe five blood bank stocks worth of the stuff... and maybe a few stem cells for the odd ripped off arm / heart / head / etc.
The blood type is quite fast to test so if you ever need a blood transfusion the hospital staff will test your blood type first. But if you are curious what your blood type is you can always go to donate blood. Then they will test your blood type for free and tell it to you. :)
That’s what I was thinking. Also, I wonder if there’s a level of discrimination associated with this. Such as only choosing Os for leadership positions. I can imagine the hilarity that could ensue in a family argument. Father to son: You’re a B, and you’re never gonna be any good! No one cares about your music B! Crying mother: Why did we have to have a B? WHY?
I always wondered why this was a thing. I thought it had something to do with a belief that a couple is more likely to be in love if they are the same type or something along those lines. I was close but not quite. Great explanation.
My first initial reaction was that it had something to do with breeding selection, as 100 years ago there was a problem with people having babies as some parents had opposing blood types or something, the baby would die quickly. I think it's called Positive vs Negative blood type or something. So I think after that they started having couples test their blood before they had a baby. It's not done anymore though.
Alex Ehlers What you're talking about sounds like rhesus negativity/ rhesus positivity, although the difference in bloodtypes is between the mother and baby. here's an article explaining it: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hemolytic_disease_of_the_newborn. In summary, the cells of the mother attack the baby's cells due to a certain antigene being on the surface of the cells of the baby.
They do this in anime too. For example, in My Hero Academia, when they start a commercial break, before they do they show the characters profile with their blood type. Izuku is O blood type, and he is the main character so it would make sense.
I learned this Japanese blood type stuff over a decade ago from some manga series where the translator had written a long explanation about why the blood types of the different characters were so important in that story. Sadly I do not remember anymore which manga it was. :)
A fascinating study of a pseudoscience I was unfamiliar with. It's just as nonsensical as astrology but now I know a little bit more about Japanese culture. The reality is personality categorization is pointless and limiting as all people display a variety of traits from each "subgroup" at given times, no one is necessarily limited to any given trait or set of traits. It is human nature to categorize as a means of processing information even with things that should not be categorized or are too varied to do so.
Sir Draco personality categorization is popular because it allows us to just lump people together in groups rather than have to deal with or think about them individually as people. I'll admit I somewhat enjoy taking personality tests of all sorts but just because my results might be terrifyingly accurate doesn't mean that the test or system itself is worth taking seriously
Well then you'd probably have a BIG problem with Persona, it is just stuffed full of personality categorization, though more of the person defines their category, not the other way around.
I do have one gripe, modern astrology is nonsensical but the actually "science" isn't. The actually astrology has been used to great affect to predict earthquakes, floods, droughts, and other things and has been pretty accurate. Take Nostradamus for example, guy literally predicted his own death and when tomb robbers would open his crypt. It's not an exact science but damn is it good for estimating outcomes.
In China, there was the "year of the Dog" or some animal thing. Things luck and your success depends if the animal your birth year have is compatible with the animal the current year have.
I've always wondered about this. I figured it was just another thing japanese creators did to flesh out their characters to make them as real as possible despite being fictional. Height, weight, age, breast size, birthday etc. Edit: More vids like this please. I don't care if it necessarily has to do with censorship. I just want to know why. I also liked the vid where you described the reasons for there not being four fingered characters in japan.
Also: Ask 1,000 US kids what their blood type is, and the most won't know. Ask 1,000 kids from Japan, and they will know. That's just a clever way to get kids to know their(and maybe their family's?) blood type. Handy in a medical situation.
I’m so confused at 6:18. That’s a report card from Super Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair, but with the portraits of girls from Love Live. I think you might’ve taken some fan art by mistake my dude.
Eh. Zodiac is worse. (Because you were born at during this time period, you will automatically have these personality traits.) At least Blood types are a _little_ more grounded.
Thesamon They censor less than the USA lol. If you want a lewd section in your game or animation in the U.S.A, you might as well make it an indie product because it wont be touched by any large companies nowadays; unless it's like two culturally enriched transfluid-demikin-heteromollusks from different tribes banging while screaming diversity is our strength, or something else 'progressive' in nature.
This is extremely interesting, you should have more Episodes about odd culture details and the history behind them. it might cause less of a shitshow in the comments, but I'm probably wrong on that.
Not exactly what I mean. Reasons of localization come from things like different cultures that differ. So they censor them out. Some gamers don't know the reason behind it. And when I mean that I mean the deep historical detail behind the cultural info behind it. And I didn't exactly say weird.
JustASuscriber Are you talking to me? In which case, whoops my bad. I didn't mean to make you mad. Except I did. I couldn't give a shit over Censorship, in fact I like getting information over weird cultural facts. I consider censorship on a case-by-case basis. Otherwise I'd rather get pissed off by everything or get pissed off by nothing. And I don't like doing that. Though personally I don't think there's a reason to keep the whole blood type thing in Fe 7(?) It's just pointless in the American version considering that it's a question that most can't answer and it doesn't have the same cultural connotations in America. But that's just me and you probably have your own actually decent reason for why you would oppose something like this Beyond having absolutely no changes between versions. I hope.
Its a script thing, when you create a character you need to think everything about it, name, ideology, color, blood type also helps to relate more with it
I've actually wondered about this. ....I don't know how long that I've noticed it but it's been a damn long time in anime for sure. It started to become part of characters I'd write with friends but the blood types were never really related to anything. xD
Interesting video! The first time I remember seeing blood type mentioned in a game was in the attract mode demos of Street Fighter 2 on SNES that I'd see in the shop windows when I was a kid, never knew why it went into that detail before but now I do - Thanks!
I remember spending ages deciding on my blood type in MGS2 thinking there would be some kind of blood transfusion moment in the game... "Should I choose universal donor or universal recipient?"

Maybe not always in America. We're unfortunately one of the countries in which all governing parties are pro-censorship, hence the necessity of net neutrality and the regular attempts at passing censorship legislation like SOPA and PIPA.
Metal Gear Solid 2 is similar. In the original release, the player filled in their name, birthday (month / day / year), nationality, and blood type. In the Substance version and HD version, the birth year option was removed and the blood type was removed. The name portion was also changed to codename. So all you had left was codename, the day and month of your birthday, and your nation.
maybe it's not scientifically proven, but it does help if you know the supposed traits of the blood types and the characters' blood types - that way you kinda get a feel of what kind of character they are supposed to be.

Well haven't you seen the new character creation screen on skyrim: "Please enter your blood type, last 3 addresses, mothers maiden name, first pet, and social security number"...
I understand Western countries not following the Blood Type Sign stuff, but what's the point of removing the blood type of characters when localizing a game? What would diminish for the Western gamers if the blood type info was left as if? What is the point of removing it?!
Hiroko Kaku There's a lot of unused data in games that end up getting released in the disc/cartridge regardless, if there was anything that should be removed to save up data space, that would be the unused content.
If you read other comments here, you'll see a bunch of whackos who actually got offended when they heard of this. Of all places. A channel about censorship, people are yelling about how insignificant things from other cultures disgust them...
What's the point? Western publishers assumed that every consumer is as moronic as average American people, so they are butchering Japanese games for years. And it's getting worse and worse actually.
_Paws_ He's not a vampire, but Stain from my hero academia has a power which resolves around licking peoples blood which relies on the blood type for different results.
The Visual Novel Dracu-riot incorporates it into the story but it's not really a plot point. As the story there goes Vampires drink synthetic blood and each of the blood types have a different flavor. A is apple, B is bannana, O is orange juice, and AB is tomato juice flavored.
Yeah, you can also be discriminated against because of your blood type, too (Primarily against B blood types. For example, applying for jobs, when dating, etc. I even saw a comedy making a nod to this by joking around and bleeping out the blood type in conversation so that someone couldn't be judged). O is kind of like the "jackpot" blood type to have.
2:40 "Superior Soldiers." *Shows anime girls*
Eeveeon truly a weapon to surpass metal gear
Eeveeon Well they could distract the enemy and stab em in the back
Cute on the outside, but harbor some major rage on the inside lolol.
Is it wrong?
Gerupin makes great dounjinshi of that anime
The blood type descriptions in fighting games make a lot more sense now
KholdKhaos64 Ray they do?
Dead or Alive Dimensions have it.
I only ever noticed this in fighting games, and I didn't think much of it because I figured, yeah, when you're in a profession like fighting where blood loss is practically inevitable, your blood type would be relevant information.
LUL Kinda makes sense haha
Those Mortal Kombat folks must go through maybe five blood bank stocks worth of the stuff... and maybe a few stem cells for the odd ripped off arm / heart / head / etc.
that's what i thought omg they had blood types up there after the fight they need blood transfusion
Yeah same thing, I only ever noticed it in Virtua Fighter.
seanmyster6 d
I kinda wish I knew my blood type, but I'm really lazy

I didn't even know until I got my dog tags in Navy boot camp. A neg
So Blood Type in Japan is used as just another marketing tool to sell stuff; got it~
I don't think anyone said that lol
Like religion
Just like Organic Food..
WHY?
This isn't a result of the blood type system. Its a result of capitalism. Stop.
Blood type fairy
Sup, Rider fan!✌😃
Blood type furry
Blooxie evolves into ABOsprite.
Blood type ferry? Blood type furry?
Blood type Attack Helicopter.

In My Hero Academia there's also a villain who paralises opponents for an amount of time depending on their blood type
Pillar guy yeah, that’s Stain’s ability, so that’s why it was useful there.
You have good taste my friend. Top 5 anime?

Probably a good thing, I am almost 20 and don't know my blood type because not once has it even been asked let alone required.
Karsten Von Fjellheim I wish we had this here tbh
Yeah I have no idea what mine is lol
Dennis Fluttershy this is a land of freedom, not practicality
Karsten Von Fjellheim why is it necessary to memorize blood type when a test can be quickly done?
as someone with Blood type O
i got all the opposite of it
Concluding:
Japaneses are weird.
At least it is what my horoscope says.
I’m so confused at 6:18. That’s a report card from Super Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair, but with the portraits of girls from Love Live. I think you might’ve taken some fan art by mistake my dude.
I was thinking the same thing. I stared at the screen trying to remember which game had a character with that name lol
That's a strange way to think about people.
Whaaat? Well that explains Purple Heart's personality somewhat then...
Hopefully Censoring Gaming will talk about that subject soon too...
Eh. Zodiac is worse. (Because you were born at during this time period, you will automatically have these personality traits.)
At least Blood types are a _little_ more grounded.
I honestly thought it was a weird fetish
knowing japan, it was a fair guess
Blood types can’t be a fetish… can they? _🤔_
Japanese Vampire romance novel material, surely.
Just like their fetish of censoring absolutely everything but still be perverted as fuck
Thesamon They censor less than the USA lol. I’m type O, yet my personality is like type B
The Ultimate McNugget Nagi I bet your only saying that to make yourself look good
I’m kinda the opposite, I’m type B but doesn’t act like one
it's 2018 and many people still believe blood type affects personality
It's all unscientific bullcrap.
It is just an unproven theory up until this point though. So no surprises there.
Loving your choice of background music :)
Of course, who doesn't like Persona 5 soundtrack?
Very intriguing, thank you.
This is extremely interesting, you should have more Episodes about odd culture details and the history behind them.
it might cause less of a shitshow in the comments, but I'm probably wrong on that.

Methodology.
More people outside Japan should know about why Japan cultur-ism stuff is censored. Good choice.
Yuen censorship =/= weird cultural differences
Not exactly what I mean. Reasons of localization come from things like different cultures that differ. So they censor them out. Some gamers don't know the reason behind it. And when I mean that I mean the deep historical detail behind the cultural info behind it. And I didn't exactly say weird.
No Censorship, it's the removal of something that had no gameplay point, and asked a question that most people wouldn't be able to answer.
Earth Alien No, that is censorship.
JustASuscriber Are you talking to me? In which case, whoops my bad. I didn't mean to make you mad. Except I did.

I remember having a book with the bio of the KOF 98 characters and the blood type was in their stats
I've always wondered why RE included blood types for their characters, now it makes sense.
Damn!, this was educative as hell!, never thought there was anything like this over there..
Since when is "educative" a word haha. The word you're lookin for is "educational," bud!
Ow, thanks! x') that's the prob of not being fluid in the language x'D
+Afghan Jesus
Educative is a word, though.
No thanks woops, my mistake. I jus looked it up and you're right. I had never seen that word used before, educational is usually used instead.
..i could be mistaken though, the word commonly used is so similar to one used in my country I immediately went for it. Glad both of them are ok x')
I remember spending ages deciding on my blood type in MGS2 thinking there would be some kind of blood transfusion moment in the game... "Should I choose universal donor or universal recipient?"
This was quite informative. Almost feel flat-footed with my lack of knowledge regarding blood types and personality traits.
Really great addition to the channel.
I don't get why localizers remove the bloodtype options when they could instead localize it into the personality types.
A Blob The answer is time and money. Coming up with an adequate equivalent for such a non-relevant thing like this requires time that's better spent getting everything else localized and QC'd.
I mean, they could just do this.
Personality-Type:
Well-organised
Selfish
Eccentric
Optimistic
You try fitting all of that into a space designed for just four characters.
A Blob Filthy Casuals want it changed for other things
A Blob Just like Somefurfag said, localization has its technical limitations, like for instance a fixed text box size. Nowadays, it's easier to work around these issues since localization teams are better skilled at changing chunks of in-game code and technology allows for less restrictive games. You could go talk to fan-translation teams working on 3DS titles at GBATemp and they'll tell you all about how many things you need to consider before making just a slight change in the game, and we're talking about a fairly recent console. Back when some of the games in this video were released, the technical limitations were far more relevant for the localization process than they are today, so I can see why in most cases they would just delete anything cultural if its inclusion wasn't relevant at all.
I hear Persona 5 music in the background.
What a weird topic to be talking about as I happen to be needing to get my blood type which are needed for some formal papers for my residency renewal and I just woke up to get ready to go to the clinic to take a blood sample when I saw this video was just uploaded.
Great trivia video. A short answer is given early on, and the rest is expanding upon it, giving us a broader perspective. I hate it when a video on, for instance, a Xenomorph gargoyle on a church in a town in rural Schotland goes on for eight minutes about the mostly irrelevant history of the town before even getting to the question.
I always wondered about this obsession. I planned to ask this tomorrow some exchange students from Japan. Funny coincidence I saw this video in my feed today.
This is very fascinating. I always wondered why some games have the characters blood-type.
wow what an amazing and informational video...I wasnt expecting so much depth into this...GREAT WORK!!!
Brilliant use of Life Will Change instrumental version from Persona 5, guys.
I got into Danganronpa a few months ago, and I kept wondering why the Report Cards show the student's blood types. This showed up at just the right time.
Very interesting. I think I'd be quite a challenge to do that in Berserk.
Final Fantasy VII was the first time I recall seeing blood types for each character (instruction booklet).
Wonder if this theory has been adjusted for the later discovery of the Rhesus antigen.
Side Note: O +
there are many antigens exept Rhesus (Rhesus itself is CDE, D is most important) and also subgens of A and B. Correlation between blood and neuron activity regulations (temper) might exist, however I wouldn't say it's even 80% accurate.
You actually believe it's possible? A simple survey could easily disprove it.
The Blood Type does make sense when added in something like a fighting game such as Tekken or Street Fighter. Since often times they don't have that much plot or character, for Japanese audiences who believe in the theory, they could get an idea of what a character is like through their Blood Type.
I've wondered this for a while now. I always saw blood types on Japanese social media as well, back in the day
This video confirmed my suspicions. I come across it in most character sheets of my manga and art books. Shame I don't know my own type for sure.
that tumblr art tho
I first came across this in the game Growlancer Generations. It combines Growlancer II and III if I remember correctly. I believe it was in 3 that blood type was asked when naming the character. I haven't played it in a long time, but have thought about looking to actually buy it off and on.
Learning... through the power of a video game censorship
Math is power censored gaming, math is power!
This is really cool, makes sense now in video games. The AB descriptionis eerily spot on hahaha
randomguy8196 true, but it's all in fun 😉👍
Is it bad that I zoned out on the discussion and just started grooving to the sweet music of Persona5 in the background?
This is so cool! I always wondered what the point of listing blood type was for Japanese games.
So the video starts out with fire emblem. Proceeds to blood types. Then in the background “life will change” from Persona 5 is playing in the background
Can we all just agree censorship sucks in general?, it's always annoying having someone else forced their views on deciding what we should be "exposed" too.
Oh well the internet can always gives us the "raw" experience, regardless of "different" cultures.
Maybe not always in America. We're unfortunately one of the countries in which all governing parties are pro-censorship, hence the necessity of net neutrality and the regular attempts at passing censorship legislation like SOPA and PIPA.
More content like this please
In one of the original Resident Evil trailers, with the Stars team, it even said
"Blood type" under the characters descriptions.
This stuff shows up in trailers all of the time. Like the video said, it's even shown on things like baseball cards!
I always thought it was because in America even a lot of adults don’t know there own blood type
I’m so distracted by the background music to listen to the information! Persona 5, Life Will Change!!!
Wow. Impressive research and very well constructed video. Subscribed.
That Persona 5 Background Music tho. LOVE IT
maybe it's not scientifically proven, but it does help if you know the supposed traits of the blood types and the characters' blood types - that way you kinda get a feel of what kind of character they are supposed to be.
Huh I wonder why he keeps mentioning furries in this video
The anime at 1:40 is Yuru Yuri for anyone wondering, and it's honestly one of the greatest animes of all time and I couldn't recommend it enough
This would explain why this was a thing in Star Fox Command. Funny how it was left in outside of JP.
I wonder if there’s a level of discrimination associated with this. Such as only choosing O’s for leadership positions.
I can imagine the hilarity that could ensue in a family argument.
Father to son: You’re a B, and you’re never gonna be any good!
No one cares about your music B!
Crying mother: Why did we have to have a B? WHY?
"Fuck you, dad! Just because you're an A doesn't mean you're any better!"
lmao
I wonder if someone has written a dystopian story about communities divided by blood types.
There is, and it can get as bad as ethnic discrimination does in other countries.
Strangely, the first Assassin's Creed revealed Altair and Desmond's blood types in the manual.
Nice.
I always thought the "Blood type info" was there just for flavor.
I remember in the Resident Evil 3 manual had Jill's blood type in it. Which is weird because you're playing a game with fighting zombies and monsters.
Well haven't you seen the new character creation screen on skyrim: "Please enter your blood type, last 3 addresses, mothers maiden name, first pet, and social security number"...
Wonderful video!
This is very interesting!
The blood types basically describe all four Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
You learn something new every time you watch this channel.
Blood O is *INSERT NORMAL HUMAN TRADE HERE*
Thats so me
In the PAL version of MGS2, you can pick what blood type you have while creating the name tag.
Wait... didn't you already posted this? I remember someone talking about this subject a couple years back.
Kale Serpent that's what I thought too, 90% sure it was this channel
I mean, in the super robot wars series, blood type can change the abilities your charater learns
That background music is great.
Dope! Thanks for teaching me something new!! (:
I understand Western countries not following the Blood Type Sign stuff, but what's the point of removing the blood type of characters when localizing a game? What would diminish for the Western gamers if the blood type info was left as if? What is the point of removing it?!
TwilightWolf032 My guess would be that it’s removed so that people don’t get confused about why it’s there.
saving data space
Hiroko Kaku
There's a lot of unused data in games that end up getting released in the disc/cartridge regardless, if there was anything that should be removed to save up data space, that would be the unused content.
6:17 where is this from? Is there a Love Live game (aside from that rhythm mobile one)?
It's probably just some artwork, the interface is from the game Danganronpa 2. That game also shows the blood type of its characters, by the way.
Blood Type "S" Rank
Act Of Vengeance Blasphemy!!!! Only epic anime characters have that blood type!
"That was cool!"
Is there an anime/manga where a vampire chooses the blood type of their victim as a plot?
_Paws_
He's not a vampire, but Stain from my hero academia has a power which resolves around licking peoples blood which relies on the blood type for different results.
The Visual Novel Dracu-riot incorporates it into the story but it's not really a plot point. As the story there goes Vampires drink synthetic blood and each of the blood types have a different flavor. A is apple, B is bannana, O is orange juice, and AB is tomato juice flavored.
Reminds me of Americas obsession with the Myers Briggs personality traits thing
Excellent video and very informative
Yeah, you can also be discriminated against because of your blood type, too (Primarily against B blood types. For example, applying for jobs, when dating, etc. I even saw a comedy making a nod to this by joking around and bleeping out the blood type in conversation so that someone couldn't be judged). O is kind of like the "jackpot" blood type to have.
It took me 5 minutes to realize that there's Persona 5 music going on in the background.
In games like Street Fighter for SNES, or Final Fight you also get Blood type
Relating it to the four classic temperaments: B is sanguine, O is phlegmatic, AB is choleric, and A is melancholic.
Always wondered, there are many fighting games and character action games that have that information still
Very informational. Good job guys👍
I had always just written it off as an additional character trait being given.
I’m O+ and the theory does not hold water for my personality. I am more of an AB personality type.......
I am O and it does to me. It might just be a coincidence
Another great video from you guys
Literally, almost every single one of them describes me, with exception of my blood type.
Ask people who don't know their blood type before what they think it is and then test them. Easy solution.
Where did you even manage to find that Love Live x Danganronpa Photoshop lmao
and here i thought they were kept mentioning blood type cause they were looking for donors.
I am blood type O and I am the opposite of pretty much everything they listed under O personality.
But yeah, I'm sure it's very "scientific."
Watches video to learn the deal about blood types. Interesting... Sees Eli Ayase at 6:17, heart melts for Love Live!
