The Krita 5.0 update rolled out right before Christmas and boy is there a lot here. A lot of it is under the hood but I'm going to be jumping into krita.org/en/

I 'think' the reason why the Microsoft Store version is $10 is 2 parts: First, that money goes towards the Krita team. And Second, this is more novelty but you'd get auto-updates.
Ahh, those are good reasons.
@@thebradcolbow Yes. I'm the Krita maintainer, and donations pay for Dmitry's work and Wolthera's manual work at the moment. Stores pay for me, Agata, Wolthera's coding work, Emmet, Eoin, Ivan, Amyspark and Sharaf. It's about 16 euros an hour we can pay ourselves.
Lol, it says that in the description of krita on Microsoft store.
Yeah, you can buy it off steam too.
Yep!
Im so glad Kritas getting the love it deserves. ITS BASICALLY A FREE PHOTOSHOP
My only issue with it is that it’s alway felt laggy to use, but with this update ima definitely redownload and try again
Most direct open-source counterpart of Adobe Photoshop would be GIMP. Krita is more than Photoshop.
@@dacat2431 yeah gimp is a image editor, as is photoshop, but gimp isn’t as useful for drawing like photoshop is
Luckily Krita is very very good for drawing
@@fossforever512 sure it aint your computer?
@@tylerxic3241 it was because I hadn’t messed with it in a few years (back when it was laggier) I recently got it again and have replaced my other drawing application with it
I find that with these improvements, kritas getting more and more like photoshop without having to pay any monkeys. I think that a symbols library would be nice to have, and it may start becoming a threat to adobe photoshop, and adobe animate.
PLUS support for Linux-based desktop OSes (especially those that already ship other KDE apps), which Adobe lacks since it's likely cheaper for them to target what's popular.
Wow great
@@kbhasi I can't agree more. One of my laptops run Ubuntu. And I tried Krita,Gimp, and a few more apps. And krita was the best by far. All these features do come for a price though. If you didn't start using krita at least around a year ago or have experience with this sort of stuff. Then learning krita from scratch might be a bit difficult. UA-cam does have a lot videos on krita, which is great for newcomers. It also amazes me how this app is free for users with its large workflow. Although I got to admit, Adobe Photoshops learning curve is much larger than krita in my opinion.
@@TheRapidDev
As far as I know, Photoshop and GIMP are designed to be photo editing apps, not painting apps, so I don't know how other people are able to use them as the latter.
I use GIMP, but just for photo editing, not for painting.
For actual painting, I sketch in BOOX notes first, then export to a PNG file that I can then import into either Krita or Inkscape depending on the project.
For me, while I can use GIMP in almost stock configuration, I have to extensively configure Krita (and create custom templates if I don't already have them) before I can use it.
@@kbhasi Yep, I agree about the last part. The thing is that since krita has so many dockers and is so customizable, we have to make custom workspaces
I've switched from photoshop to krita a year ago, and it seems the best decision I've ever made. I can create industry standard artwork in krita, its all i really need. Adobe is desperately adding several bells and whistles to photoshop so they can maintain their clientele. No thanks, I'd rather have a free app than a subscription based one.
Adobe is getting more expensive, even Clipart studio paint is alot more cheaper than photoshop
@@demon6937 ... This comment has AGED POORLY. CSP recently is getting into subscription models and... I honestly quit despite being an EX-CSP user as it means 1. No more accessable manga tools and 2. No more damn updates or bug fixes after V3. So no new features of V2 if I don't shell out.
@@MaoRatto I know, CSP went to subscription route like Adobe people hate it and regret buying the software few months ago
@@demon6937 clip studio has the stand alone version as well, unfortunately their app version is subscription
Yep, Krita is on Chrome devices. I just checked my Chrome tablet and it auto-updated to 5 🎉😊
Checked it out and I'm impressed! Super silky smooth brushes! Highly underrated. I loved that I could just straight download, no account, no email, just easy and simple and no commitments.
Always great to see updates from these projects
I appreciate that you demoed this on a surface laptop studio. It’s exactly what I wanted to see before I decided to download. Thanks!!
I really liked the addition of the 2 point perspective assistant. Has really helped me, since I have no feel for spatial depth
this. the two point perspective assistant is the best
Another great video! Your videos were among the key factors for me getting my first tablet for drawing purposes, and picking up krita for an alternate drawing program. Now I can seamlessly transition my art between my new (to me) samsung galaxy tab s6 lite and my pc. Thanks for the insightful content and keep up the good work!

@GZ Gaming I like how you mentioned that you didn't need a certain level of specs. That's one of the great things about his reviews. He looks past the specs and breaks it down so we can decide what we actually need when looking at a product.

Great video !
More videos and some tutorials about Krita would be great ! !! :D
Thanks and keep up the good work ! !!
The paid version(s) are to support the devs and get auto-updates. Otherwise you wanna get the free version.
Edit: I say versions because it's on Steam too.
Your enthusiasm about Krita is the reason why I donated towards development before even trying the app 😅
i downloaded krita 5.0 and the time lapse option is awesome
Wait how do you do the time lapse??
@@jirou7135 Setting> Dockers> Recorder. press the record button to start recording, press the button again to stop recording.
@@cgtang thank you sooooo much pal:)
@@jirou7135 no problem. 👍
May i ask ? How y'all have downloaded krita for ipad. It isn't available
Thank you so much for this video! Krita is what I use for art, and I was really confused on the update!
I'm surprised you say Krita was/is step or two slower than the other apps. I remember some techinical tests from last year and Krita actually won the performance when it comes to painting/drawing while in filters it did not win. For example you can make a 1000px smudge textured brush in krita to work real time while you can't make such a heavy brush in csp, though I think I heard csp is supposed to get some rewrite/update to brush engines in the future (?).
Anyway great to see more apps catchign attention have a nice year guys!
Getting good use of your new Surface 😊
Your work is always a treat to watch…Thanks for sharing your beautiful artwork, pls stay connected and have a wonderful day.
I love krita, and now I am going to love it twice over!
I recently changed to the Lenovo Chromebook Duet 5 and penoval stylus; as an amateur artist, Krita has worked wonders.
I just started using this for drawing. So much easier than Photoshop. I love the brush strokes, thanks for the update, I just downloaded the new version.
I love Krita. I'm waiting for your video on Krita Animation, Brad. As always, thank you for your amazing content. :>
Thx as I just started using for my animations
Just found. Just downloaded. Excited to learn.
It so happens that I haven't set up my custom Krita configuration, so I'm going to look into just completely reinstalling it so I can start from scratch and build my custom configuration from there!
(My custom configuration primarily includes a custom window layout that allows me to work on the pen display, while seeing the full image on the primary display up above, at 'fit to window' or close to print size depending on the file.
Idk if you already did, but you can get the default workspace by clicking "window">"workspace" and then select default
Beautiful drawing
Thank you so much Sensei! You are a blessing!
Krita deserves recognitions!!!
excellent news, thank you!
I was just wondering where did Brad go, and here he is 😁
Yeah, took a few weeks off at the end of the year, I'm recharged and ready to go!
Brad is the bomb! And you're hysterical! Inspired to join one of his courses! Thanks!
the revamped blending is night and day from earlier versions.
It's paid in that store because they need to fund their full time developers...otherwise all the features that Krita has so far implemented would no exist even 3 years from now.
Incredible
and the fact that there is that one perspective tool 🤩
I usually use the sketchbook app because it is free but I might have to make the switch after watching this video! Great work!
infinite painter for android also awesome .. sort of procreate for android rival
How did I not hear about Krita 5 coming out until now?! I'mma go check it out! =D
I always want to like Krita but the way it does layer clipping always confuses and frustrates me, so I stick with CSP.
Same here 3:
Basically clipping in Krita is called "Alpha", and it works exactly like Photoshop if you group the layers together!
thnx for the reminder to update my krita.
Was excited to try this seeing as I got a Kanvas 13 for xmas and the layout looked better than Gimp. But apparently there's a bug for years that the drawing area will lose track of the pen as soon as it's too far and the cursor remain frozen as you continue drawing. You have to move the pen to the Krita menu buttons to reactivate the cursor then back drawing area every time you lift your pen too far from the screen.
also krita for android and kamvas 13 do not have tilt or pensupport working
I have had a kamvas 13 for a good 2 years now. It's a very good tablet once you learn how to use it to it's fullest extent, good choice!
oh yeah. I had a glitch where my pressure sensitivity didn't work for a long time, It worked again after I reinstalled it for the 5.0 update. try doing that and see if it fixes your problem aswell, if you already tried that then I am not to sure
The very video for me thanks so much
brad your krita workspace needs some love given to it
hah, you're right since I don't use it much I don't have it tally customized, I really needed to up my color swatch game in this video, would have saved a ton of time.
My only complaint is that they never fixed the glitchy audio scrubbing yet; I can hear the audio clearly when I play it, but can only hear snippets when I’m scrubbing. I seen some people not having trouble with it and I guess it depends on the type of computer they have because I seen some people answer a few who have the same problem on how robust their computer is?
Hey Brad how could I get those keyboard shortcuts on screen near your left hand?
Brad--you are amazingly prolific! I art and video!
gonna go play!!!! I didn't know about this until now lol
I was waiting for this update for tablets and it was ✨worth it✨.. Im ignoring my free 6months Clip Studio now 😂
Wow. absolutely love the paintingstyle of the bird! Just started with digital drawing, is there a tutorial available for this or something with a similar style? I have csp and krita, thx!
This is the one app i need.
Thanks for your sharing 👍👍
Downloading the beta on my chrombook. I have this idea of matching veggie take tattoos with my sister and I need to draw it.
Hi, Brad!
I don't use Krita, but I like watching your videos, so I watched. But, because I don't use Krita I was easily mesmerized by the color of your one eyed duck or penguin.
Would you be willing to pull the hex codes for the body and outline? That family of red is incredible.
Thanks in advance, if you happen to read this.
You should be able to snippy tool the picture and eyedrop it in your drawing program, that's probably the best way to get the exact colours.
@@ashtoncartner I'll give it a try, thanks! Didn't even think about that.
How do I get the shortcut panel(the one in the down left side)
Bro I've been using sketchbook and then switched to this, FUCKING LOVE THIS😍✌️
Drawing is a part of life 😍😍😍
Great video as always. Will you be reviewing the asus z13 tablet, would love your thoughts.
The fact that the pop up menu can have more brushes
To make Krita faster, you can turn off the automatic recording.
Uhhh! new video looks shiny!
It will only get better
I had an old MacBook laying around my sister gave with a corrupted hard drive. Swapped it out with an SSD, loaded zorin Linux on it and gave it to my 9 year old daughter. She found krita and an old drawing tablet I had laying around and is absolutely loving it, won't get off the computer for anything lol. I think it's awesome!
I'll go tell Jeff right away thanks man.
I just purchased a surface pro 8 with a i5 in it. Is this the program I need to make my comic book in and monkey with animation a bit or should I look for a program specifically made for making comic books?
I am not tech savvy but I finally concluded it was time to move into digital creation or I never will.
Nice video on Krita, possible you can do a review on Rebelle 5.0? It would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
ayo, amogus bird
haha, when I started drawing I thought about doing an among us guy but I couldn't remember what it looked like exactly so it became a bird 🤣
It’s the newest Pokémon: Cy-ducks. 😏
Nice 😊
Hey brad. Can you review the Artisul sp1603? I want to see what the pros and cons are.
Hello can you please make a tutorial on how to configure settings just like your canvas..
Hey! I’m on the fence about purchasing the surface studio laptop and see that you’re using it in this video! I’ve got the surface book 2 and my only issue is the battery life, all my animations are made in Krita using the surface and I love it! So, should I upgrade? And have you had any issues animating with the surface studio laptop? I can’t find hardly any video on animations with this laptop
Scary face appears in your painting at 1:27! Matrix glitch!
(We all already know that “Brad Cowboy” was a Matrix glitch.)
Hands down to the Ppl working fpr krita tysm
if you know tid bit of what linux is you can just type in your win10/11 cmd winget install KDE.Krita and it will install Krita (winget is a windows package manager).
So I'm a beginner artist looking to get into digital, I'm torn between Krita and Photoshop, which one do you think is more beginner friendly?
Fantastic video my friend.
I like your work…. Like
Many thanks
Please do a review of the new Huion 16 pro (2.5k) its currently in pre order .... really looking forward to purchase it your insights would be really helpful.
krita has got animation tweening now so now its the best free animating soft ware
Let's gooi
plz do more tutorial on brad's art school plzzzz!
Pls more Krita vids
I like krita i use it sometimes
A question I have with Krita is if you can merge the Layers with special filters or effects?
As someone who have used Sketchbook for many years, I kind of appreciate that kind of feature
Is there a vector tool like Adobe has?
I find this a helpful tool.
I see Krita is quite good for digital art and animation. I am wondering if it also good for photo manipulation, photo bashing, photo editing like Photoshop. Can Krita basically do more or less everything that Photoshop can do? Thanks!
Photoshop is better with photo editing of course because it has more tools specifically for that, otherwise if you're only going for a drawing program, go for Krita. Trust me, you'll save a ton of money in the long run :)
My man drew bird amogus 😔
Can’t wait till they upgrade on android!
Hey Brad, did you ever try to get Krita working on a S22 Ultra using the S-pen. Not ideal, but could it even be done?
I have Leonardo but don't like how I can't auto change shapes by holding the stylus down like I can with procreate. I'll have to give this one a shot later.
How would you compare Leonardo to Procreate, I'm planning on buying leonardo for my hp envy or an iPad for procreate, your reply could really help
@@eziothehedgehog1709 First off I am a total noob when it comes to drawing so take what I say with a grain of salt. I feel like Leonardo has a simple layout and a really nice feature called "infinity canvas" that just lets you doodle forever and not worry ever about the paper size. I got too use to drawing something like a wavy like or a circle, holding the stylus down, and letting procreate automatically pull me into editing it, which isn't here.
@@sweetfeathery Thanks!
How did BRAD colbow get that onscreen controls in the bottom left?
what it is called?
Should I delete all my previous versions of Krita before I install version 5 to get the new brushes or what?
Is there a systemwide "shortcuts window" like the touch docker in Kreta or On-Screen Controls by Wacom? I would kill for that. Being able to put custom buttons on an always-on-top window so I don't have to flip my 2-in-1 to get to the keyboard. I'm at the point of wanting to just program it myself.
There's TabletPro if you want a paid and actively supported shortcut dock.
Otherwise the TabletPCReview forums have a couple of options a couple of people in that community have created. Neither are too pretty, but they work.
Is that swtor icon i am seeing?
Where do u recommend downloading it from? The windows app store or the website?
That’s cool but are you at CES? And if not then still please make a CES for artists video.
Not at CES this year, Covid cases really bad where I am right now so I'm playing it safe.
@@thebradcolbow Good call, but please make a video for CES for Digital Artists video as the laptops are looking sick
Heya, can I use a pen display tablet in place of a pc monitor screen, or are there only specific ones like the Huion Artisul 22 inch (review all the way back in 2018). So as an example could the - Huion Kamvas 22" (2020) fully be used as a monitor for a pc or can it only be used as an extended screen or second screen. this may change my purchase from an MS or cr chromebook device to rather something like Huion?
Brad, you gotta review the new Lenovo "Tab P12 Pro" android tablet!
That was an among us in the intro
😱
SUS
Have you thought about reviewing any Lenovo tablets? I've heard the Lenovo Tab P12 Pro just dropped in the US, pen in the box too!
Hi! Just a question: how to activate the toolbar in the bottom left corner? Is that a new feature or what?
Sorry if this is a dumb question, I'm really new.
Tnx
I watched 2 videos watching this one and they all have sponsor of square space
That's a sussy bird
what is the difference between normal krita download and portable installer?
