Spark Plug Thread Repair

Today we'll be discussing some various tools used to repair damaged spark plug threads.
1st off, I use a basic thread chaser to clean up the the spark plug threads on an aluminum cylinder head.
Next, I use what's known as a back-tap spark plug thread chaser. This goes into the cylinder, past the damaged threads, then expands, allowing you to chase the threads from the inside out.
Then, if the threads are too badly damaged, and a thread chaser cannot be used, I show you a basic heli-coil kit.
This is an insert, that replaces the factory spark plug threads in your cylinder head.

This is exactly what I needed to fix the cross. Threaded spark plug hole on my 2004 Buick Rainier and I can probably almost guarantee that it'll work because it's due shows. He did a good job with it and I really do appreciate it
One of the best channels on UA-cam!!!
I watched this video sometime ago and again now. Must comment again. Simply a great video.
Thanks DJ!
Incredibly informative.
man oh man iv never seen one of those... Must have.. thanks for this info
Great little tool to have in the shop, even I missed this one until I went searching!
What a great tool eh guys. Great explanation
Thanks Bruce!
an incredible useful video, thank you so much!!
Great video and tips. I had never heard of the back tap thread chaser before I will have to get one of those.
It seems to work great, now I just need some cylinder with messed up threads!
This guy is awesome!
Thank you 🙌
Thanks, for the information will be a big help in the future.
Thanks for watching!
Good video, but you forgot after heil-coil is installed, you need to use that punch, and hit a couple times to seat the top part of heli-coil.
Yes but I didn't actually install them in this video, was more a video to show off the reverse thread chaser. Thanks for watching!
Another great video! I was thinking on that first tool before you said it that a dab of grease on the bottom might keep shavings from entering the combustion chamber if the heads still on. It worked pretty good when I punched then tapped threads into an oil pan for a supercharger install on an old car.
Yes the grease will be sticky enough and should keep the debris from going in, but I just wanted to make a point about how much better the other tool is during the comparison. Thanks for watching!
Great job, thank you buddy.
After an unforgettable, heart stopping moment when I crossthreaded a plug two decades ago, I eventually bought this tool to have on hand if I ever encounter difficulty. Cleaning up threads is always better if you start from the bottom, to be sure you're at the right angle. Since then, I've been so paranoid I've never had need for plug thread repair.
As Mick would say what a LUSH tool that back tap thread chaser is. If there is a need there is a way, exactly why this tool was invented by someone. Crapper invented the toilet and Tapper invented this another good one mate.
Thanks for watching!
Man you should have got an affiliate link to that tool on Amazon. You woulda made a fortune🤣
If you have the head off, you can use a normal thread chaser from the back side that has good threads for alignment.
So when you are dealing with aluminum heads you will want to use a cutting lubricant thats aluminum friendly. There's several we use in the machine shops that are available, However just everyday WD-40 works well on aluminum. If you're working on a STEEL head, you'll want to use a cutting oil for steel. I really like Tap Magic. And its available in a small 4 oz can. And to help avoid debri getting into the engine on aluminum heads. Rotate the piston into the top dead center position. The move it back slightly into the cylinder to make sure you do not hit it with the thread chaser. If you can,, remove the muffler also.
Then do the work, Then before you do anything else use some compressed air and a blow nosel try try and blow out any of those small chip. Typically they take the easiest path and go out threw the exhaust. If you're working on a steel head, then a small magnet on a collapsible rod (they sell these at the parts store) Place that down into your newly cut hole and add a small amount of air around into the cylinder. The magnet will attract the metal chip. And be careful when removing it to not knock them off. I do these a few times till I'm sure I've got everything out of the cylinder I can. Just so advice from a machinist thats done a few of these jobs in the past 40 yrd. 😉
Yo yo . The first one Looks like a good tool Jake really like the second tool.. I'm going to have to try and pick one up. Hopefully they do one in the UK 🇬🇧
Yes I believe it's far better, seems to be an excellent product!
YOU'RE GANGSTER!
I don’t have to think about giving a thumbs up, dude. It’s a no brainer for content this great! 👍 I know exactly where the idea came from for that back tap thread chaser. Having used taps by hand with their associated T-handles I immediately recognized that compression design from the T-handles. Also seen them as collets on Dremel and other tools for chucking bits. Brilliant use of the concept and a brilliant tool. So glad to know something like that exists. Thanks 🙏!
Thanks for the kind words, and thanks for watching!
"Make sure the piston is all the way down"....check the depth by measuring with say a screwdriver??.....
Yep that'll work, we use a wooden dowel because it's hard enough not to bend but soft enough so it doesn't scratch the piston up
It's good to confirm thread damage before anything. I had the situation where it looked like the spark plug was crossthreaded. It moved with difficulty. I thought someone had used loctite or some other product there. I almost ended rethreading the hole. I looked by chance at the bottom and it had this thin layer of varnish on the bottom threads. I realized it was the varnish acting as some sort of loctite there. I removed the varnish and there was nothing wrong. But the varnish was really stuck. I took a few hours to get out. But it goes to show that what looks like crossthread sometimes is not crossthread and it is good to see the crossthread before rethreading.
@@stellarv5689 a torch would likely remove the varnish, it's possible to burn it off the same way we clean spark arrestors
Good video except that the tool use was demonstrated using no grease and applying 'sticky grease' is best. Grease was mentioned, but late in the video. Also, deep socket over the end of the tool for final extraction works best. Turn knurled tip of the tool clockwise to tighten and expand the threads of the tool tip, then turn counter-clockwise by hand to thread the tool into the undamaged threads. When damaged threads are reached you will likely need a wrench to further turn the tool to re-cut the damaged threads, as turning by hand will be too hard.
Thank you, I have this problem with an 07 2.5 nissan xtrail,I will acquire a back tap spark plug thread chasing tool,Arthur Dunn Australia 🇦🇺
I think this is the first ever comment I've made on a youtube video - dude, you saved my ass! I wrecked the spark plug threads on my automatic standby generator - first bought the standard helicoil kit, then came across your video - awesome! thanks!!!
That is an awesome tool. It can pay for itself on a single repair job by saving time and parts (replacement gaskets, etc.) Thanks for the video.
Thanks for watching!
That's an awesome tool! If you do not have any grease, I use fully synthetic engine oil works the same lol! Btw, we have a product that can restore/fix threads just like yours, but ours can be used for inner and outer threads, maybe you can check it out!
Thanks for watching!
And the link to the "superior / preferred' back tap thread chase is ? Omitted... chesus
Just Google 640811 thread chaser, I give you the part number in the video. I'm not interested in posting links because if one of these amazon/ebay sellers rips off one of my viewers it wouldn't look good on me for promoting them.
Is this the size that will fit a 5/8 spark plug hole? I cross threaded my Cadillac CTs vsport
Great video. I work on my gardener's mowers for free and sometimes I charge him for parts depending on the amount of the parts. Got his mower working again thanks to your video.
Excellent explanation
hello i have 12mm spark plug but the cylinder head is losetread what kit i will use? 14mm spark plug repair kit,?
That was cool. I didn’t know they made the second back tap thread chaser tool. Great video👍🏻
Thanks for watching!
Hi. Just came across your video. Im having trouble with the spark plug on a Troy-Bilt storm 2410 and trying to see what i can do to fix this. Thinking when someone tried replacing the spark plug they cross threaded it-when i went to replace it the porcelain was cracked and im now having trouble getting the new plug in? Not sure if i was given the wrong plug at the store but i need to look into it first? Wondering how i would now what size of this tool i would need if i had to repair threads? Any way you could help with that? Just trying to fix a snow blower is all. Thank you if you can! Have a good night
I have made 3 comments during the entire life of UA-cam. I had no idea this tool back tap tool existed. Never too late to teach an old dog a new trick or two....thanks man !!!!
Neither did I, until one day I saw it and knew I had to have it. I don't use it a lot, but when I need it, it works perfectly. Thanks for watching!
Awesome video, thank you for such a in depth but to the point video! Saved me time and money and I appreciate you for this! Take my thumbs up and sub. :)

The best video that show the interior function of the back tap chaser, thanks...
Thanks! Great tutorial with good detail that others leave out.
Another great video from Eliminator performance!!!
Thanks!
So have to I use the 10mm back tap for a 10mm spark plug thread right ?
IF YOU APTLY A BUTT ROOM OF GREASE, IT WILL CATCH ATLEAST 98% OF THE SHAVINGS!
Very informative video. You do a great job teaching. You could become a small engine repair trainer at a college or university
Thanks!
Some one will get a special type spark replacement coil can't think of the name of it 😂
Thanks for watching!
Excellent tool thread expander, work from inside out removing debrees out of hole, but i never had distroy ed sparkplug thread, i always finger tightsen before Using any tool
That's the best way to do it, but this will make a great repair tool. Thanks for watching!
I operate a landscaping company and we do in-house repairs. This just made our lives so much better.
It's a great tool! amzn.to/3VqCGPf
My spark plug threads screw damage plug flying out of my xr150l when i start up HELP HELP😱
Just wanted to add another fix for this issue, especially for spark plugs with stubbier threaded sections like he showed, is to remove the washer at the end of the plug. This allows the plug to screw in at least one full turn deeper into the cylinder head, potentially allowing it to grab undamaged threads further back. It's worked for me so far. One caveat is that this washer is there for a reason. In my case, it hasn't affected performance on my Briggs and Stratton engine mower. I had to use a hack saw and cutting pliers to remove it, but a Dremel-type tool could also work.
Great video, thanks a lot
Nice video can you tell me what are the size of the new threads (outside) of the helicoil please on the oem kit?
My motorcycle head has been drilled and retaped but when i removed the spark plug the helicoil came with the plug. I'm looking for a new helicoil but can't seem to find one, that is M14 1.25 inside and M16 1.5 outside. Cant's seem to find a back-up for M16 1.5 either... :(
Thanks
If ya have the head off, thread the chaser in from the piston side.
However, the expanding tool is rather ingenious.
It's great, I use it all the time. Works wonders!
Great video as always great info
Mi dici quanto costa e l'indirizzo dove lo posso acquistare grazie.
Won't the thread (once worn out) have space? I like the idea of the insert because it fills any gap. But I like the back tap idea because of the material coming out aspect.
Thanks information
I have used one when nobody knew about them and they are FANTASTIC!👍👍😎
i used one 20 yrs ago
Thanks again great video
It needs be longer for useing in a 5.4 Ford motor 10 in at least to be able to get a grip on the bknout tool be great find one 10 plus ins or u cauth hell trying bl and retap on fords alum heads works great on motor bikes mowers etc u can get to be a hemi type motor were u got go deeeep in cly head be a bit of a job u need modifications of tool
