Dang! This video was actually pretty useful. I preferred the first lut in most scenarios because I felt it looked alittle more natural. Kinda sad because I've been using the buttery luts 😂
100% the first lit had better greens. The second lut had kinda ugly puke colour green in comparison the the first. Wasn’t too big of a deal in the nature shots, but the green of the second lut really messed with the skin tones
I own both and have been using both on multiple projects for a long time now. I'm always finding that Joels luts are more on the pink/magenta side and buttery luts are always more on the green side and I notice the same thing on your footage. It's funny though because a lot of people who use these luts don't make any mention of this one way or another. Another lut worth doing a review on are the Juan Maleras luts which I think are a great happy medium for skin tones.
One easy way to make it out. THE GREENS! I nailed every single one. Also, the Gamma curve with the phantom luts has a lot more contrast but in a way that doesn't crush nor the blacks or the whites. and the highlights desaturate at the top with the phantom luts. The arri look is something you can just... recognize after some time.
FIY, the Phantom Neutral LUT for Sony A7SIII on sony slog3 footage matches pretty well the BMPCC4K Buttery Gen5 Neutral +1 contrast LUT on BMD Gen5 Film (better than the actual BMD Neutral LUT form Phantom). If ever you need two match both of these cameras.
Phantom really steps more into magenta versus green which is seen quite clearly in the side by sides.. Especially so when you have a lighter skin tone represented and see that red so clearly, with more separation from other elements in the environment such as leaves/trees/walls/etc (speaking without other grading/corrections of course, just the LUT).
For sure. Just did another comparison. The vector scopes confirmed what you said. Buttery skews green, and phantom magenta. However, There was just a recent update with phantom luts that made them even better if that’s possible 🥴
@@brendonleerogers1794 I haven't updated yet.. I have been waiting to update my FX9's firmware as they changed the magenta/green bias of the camera and I was liking my workflow for the past 6 months...
I haven’t seen the reveal yet but I like overall the color of the one on the right but I think the skin tones are a lot better with the left. Except for the one shot in low light the right one did a better job with skin. Overall I think the right one looks more like film.
Having owned the Phantom LUTs (and in my experience) I wouldn’t say you could just slap them on and go! They require some tweaking, that is to say several minutes or so. I generally found with blackmagic raw footage (Gen 5), the blacks are crushed virtually out of existence, and saturation is full on. This takes time to balance.
Yeah of course especially with 12 bit you have full leeway to make what ever changes you want. I just know peeps that don’t wanna colorgrade too much and just turn and burn projects
The creator of the Phantom Luts just replied to me and said he is going to give an update for the bmpcc4k and 6k in regards to the gen5 color science. Seems like the Phantom lut is still only appliccable to gen4 footage. I'm still conflicted which one to pick: buttery or phantom. The phantom lut in this test almost seems too saturated, and yet technically it is matched very close with Arri, which seems pretty sweet.
It’s a hard choice for sure. Imho if you need to match multiple cameras then buttery has more camera matched. But overall look the phantom is a great starting point and is almost identical to arri amira. Joel refers to the bmpcc in one of his videos as an “alexa micro” 😂 Been emailing Joel also and there’s going to be an update soon to the bmpcc versions that fixes skin tones and overall look of image. Currently working on a video for Sony A7siii versions of the phantom luts and will have a discount code available for the luts (20% off)
I find all phantom LUTs to work extremely well with my FX9 in almost every scenario - tweaks tend to be a preference more than what I would consider looks great already 'out of the box.'
your video was really helpful. I really would love Joel to develop a Fuji-X F-log lut, that would make choice easier as I've got to match three different cams and the Fuji is the one missing
This is true but then wouldn’t that make the skin tones and overall image even more green? What I’m seeing on comparison is already greenish hue on skin tone but that’s just what I’m seeing
Wow what a timely recommendation from UA-cam. I’ve been a user of the buttery luts for just over a year now. I just picked up a a7siii and discovered the phantom luts two days ago. You took every word out of my mouth. I highly prefer the look of phantom leagues over buttery. But buttery is still good for a wider variants of footage.
Same. Just adding lut on minimal tweaking needed I’m a fan for sure now! My a7siii is shipping in this Thursday! Cannot wait. Might be time to retire bmpcc 4K 🥲
@@brendonleerogers1794 i have a 6k i use and tested the phantom out on a shoot goodness it looked so good haha. I’m eying the sony line of cameras now. A fx6 and a7siii combo. But you’ll love the a7siii its a freaking beast.

One quick note, Mateo does advice to bring the Tint to 0. Idk if that is something you did.
