- Finding Your Throwing Bliss with Andy Ruble is a multi-part web series designed to help beginning through advanced ceramic students learn and improve technique on the wheel.
In this episode, Andy demonstrates how to create the ocarina, an ancient wind musical instrument and a type of vessel flute.
ABOUT: Andy Ruble received his Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree from the Kansas City Art Institute and his MFA from Louisiana State University. The heart of his work is the hybridization of organic and architectural structure. His work demonstrates how the analogous structures of both natural and manmade objects are important to the survival of the whole. Ruble has held various teaching positions at Cabrillo College, Monterey Peninsula College, and Southeastern Louisiana University. He is currently the director of ceramics at Foothill College in Los Altos, California and maintains his own ceramic studio in downtown Santa Cruz.

Glad I came across this video, seems like a simple way of making a great ocarina. I currently lack the popsicle sticks all the other videos use so this method is more than welcome! Im taking ceramics 1 in college right now and have been wanting to make an ocarina for a while, Ill be using some terracota clay though, currently have a few ovals drying to leather hard. Thank you!
Glad I can help! Good luck with this and enjoy the process. :)

Very cool !thanks for sharing !
Nice job!
This is the only video that really helped me make the ocarina work. Thanks a lot.
I'm so happy it helped you! Thanks for watching..

Exelente MAESTRO! Gracias!!!!!
I love this!! 👏
Happy jamming Julia! :)
Incredible...from Brazil
Great video!! It was pretty easy to follow and definitely an easier way of making an ocarina!!
Thank you! I enjoy occasionally making and playing them :)
Very cool
Lindo, vou tentar fazer um
Best ever instruction i have found Thank You so so much
Thanks so much for watching! I love making the whistles. :)
i like the different approach you took for making an ocarina.
Thanks! It does seem a bit easier this way, and often has better tone and volume.

@@andyruble633 yeah i like it. did you come up with this?
An amazing ceramic instrument maker named Brian Ransom taught me many years ago. 👍
Simple merci❤️👏
Very good 👍
Fantastico! Bel suono
Thank you Adriana!
so nice.
Thanks for watching! I hope it helped :)
Very good video! It helped so much
Have you tried, and you've made a sound?
@@sandgrains3418 yeah it was a little off tune tho
¡Te amo! I am writing to you with the help of the translator.🤭 Thank you very much, I am truly fantastic, thank GOD and what you explain very well, although in another language I could understand you perfectly and it sounds the same.
You can't imagine happiness!
Hello from California! I’m glad you were able to make it work. Thanks so much for watching! :)
Thanks a lot! Grate master class! And your voice is nice)
Thanks for watching Ahha! I hope your whistle works well :)

Very nice video. I hope to make some this month.
Well made four lol first three awful , then I followed the directions and had four really nice notes , but , the clay was still wet lol , I added a larger hole to the bottom , it seemed to work fine but something must have shifted I lost some of the notes then tried to fix it and disaster lol so squished it back to the clay pile lol
Next time I let it get leather hard.
Good luck! I suggest making the shape of the ocarina, letting it get leather hard then adding the tube for the best results. Many people only get a few notes out of their first whistles unless its very efficient. Thanks for trying!

Nice guide. I'm going to be teaching a whistle class soon. I'm also trying to make a 3 chambered flute/ocarina. That's turning out to be a lot to have bitten off! I'm trying to make it somewhat unique in that I want one chamber to be the bass with two holes controlled by the thumbs to play 1st, 3rd and 5ths. the other two chambers to share (7) finger holes, so that they play relative 3rds and I"m hoping it gets a decent organ-like tone to it. I'm using math to try to get relative tones. I first tried a cylindrical design, but I couldn't get a sound out of it the second day after it dried to leather hard. I'm trying a more square/cubic approach on my second attempt. It's turning out to be too big, but I'm saving the whistle parts for last and I'm hoping I can get all 3 chambers whistling as desired, then I can dial it down on the 3rd one to get a good fit. I'm imagining I might have to make some "channels", esp for the thumb bass notes. such that where I place my thumb leads to a different hole position leading to the chamber to get the desired tonality. Long live imagination and exploration!
Awesome! Sounds ambitious. I have made multiple chamber whistles in the past and they really sound great. Look up a guy named Brian Ransom. He has made the most amazing ocarina clusters I have ever seen!
Good luck, -Andy
Esse formato de ocarina é bem diferente da ocarina peruana que tenho mm
It is different but very effective! Thanks for watching...

Hi Andy! Please tell how long do you dry ocarina before making holes in it: several hours, 2 days, one week? Do you cover it with plastic bags to make it dry slowly or it is ok to dry it on open air? Thanks.
Hello, and thanks for watching! I like to make the holes and mount the blow tube when the clay is much stiffer in the leather hard stage. How long it needs to dry completely depends on the humidity and the temperature. You can speed up the drying by using a heat gun or hairdryer, or keep it wet by wrapping it up with plastic. I hope this helps!
Andy
They told me that the clay should dry as slowly as possible. I thought that if it dries on open air, it will be damaged in the kiln. Is it true?
Really fast drying could cause cracking, but it is possible to speed dry clay and it has no effect on how it fires in the kiln.
But what is the pasta used?
will cheap air dry clay work or do I need higher quality clay?
Thanks for checking it out! Although I have never tried air drying clay with these whistles, I do believe it should work fine. 👍
@@andyruble633 I am definetly gonna try that with a cheat air clay sealed with varnish to see how it goes, will let you guys know !
I feel like it would be possible to use air dry clay, but for decent sound a polymer clay would probably work better.
@@abderrahimbenmoussa4359 how'd it go??
당신은 점토가공을 매우 잘합니다
Great job, have not you tried to make another type of Ocarina?
Like sweet potato
Im impressed by the sweet potato whistles I have seen, but have yet to try :)
