      You did nothing wrong. Nobody cares except for a few people who are overly invested in the crowdsourced bad deck concept or people that already have beef with you for whatever reason. The fact that the process to create the bad deck took a lot of effort is irrelevant. The fact that you are a streamer is irrelevant. There's a reason why someone like MarkMcKz doesn't dump his combo ideas to reddit before making them into videos.
      My guess is people are lashing out after starting to realize that building a really bad deck one card at a time over 40 days isn't going to result with anything fun or meaningful in the end and it was all just a huge waste of time.

      I really don't like the "it brings them exposure" argument... They did not ask for exposure, it isn't a payment for those who do not want it, or value it.
      Even without this argument Rarran didn't do anything wrong, he explained where he got the idea from, he showcased it in the stream for a long period of time, he linked the subreddit on the description, and is now waiting until the OC of the idea to post the video before he posts his.
      Most people would agree that's more than enough, considering a lot people wouldn't even do any.

    • @thechickenlord9617
      @thechickenlord9617 Рік тому +18

      @@LikeAFemaleDog what do you mean they didn’t ask for exposure? Of course they did, they posted something online. That’s like putting a male dog in a room with a female dog in heat and saying “Oh I didn’t want puppies.” If you post something online, especially a chain of something on a fairly niche reddit, you HAVE to expect exposure from that community, and even more reaching in from outside the community, by spreading a cool post

    • @LikeAFemaleDog
      @LikeAFemaleDog Рік тому +3

      @@thechickenlord9617 Posting something online doesn't necessarily mean they're looking for exposure, they could've been looking for feedback for example. Additionally, not every type of exposure is the same, maybe they did want exposure, in the sense that more and more people would be hyped for the eventual release of their video, but they didn't want the type of exposure Rarran gave, as it makes them feel like it'll detract from his video (it won't).
      It's like paying on a currency you cannot currently use, maybe you'll be able to exchange it later, or maybe you cannot.

    • @mistermiles3271
      @mistermiles3271 Рік тому +8

      @maskedmagician5646 I would normally agree with you, but the entire reason people are mad is because they think Rarran "stole the hype". As in, they're worried Rarran's video might take attention away from the video that the Redditor wants to later release. This whole situation is about wanting more exposure. So "it brings more exposure" is a valid counter argument

    The birthday analogy at 9:30 is absolutely wild.
    A more honest version might be: you went to someone's birthday party, thought their cake looked great, made your own cake based on it, and then invited your own friends to watch you blow out the candles.

    • @jonaza2105
      @jonaza2105 Рік тому +10

      No, the real version is: Walmart sees some local baker making a beautiful custom-made cake and before they can sell it, Walmart takes the idea and finishes it to sell for their own gain.
      I love Rarran and he had no ill intent but he just stole this guy's deck spotlight. The OC wanted to use this deck for his own content but now it's already a used idea which might kill curiosity and momentum for such a small channel as his. If the deck had been finished and the OC had done his first content with it, then it's fair game. Until then it's rude of Rarran to jump the gun and play it before the OC does.

    • @96Adyb
      @96Adyb Рік тому +16

      @@jonaza2105 But you see the problem with your analogy is that the local baker is displaying purposefully how to make that custom cake by giving a tutorial for all to see. Your analogy makes sense only if the content creator and rarran spoke before he even made the first post on reddit about it and then rarran took it then i would agree with you otherwise we have to be upset about every piece of content that is made after someone make a tutorial about something.
      Is it logical that there should be an uproar after I watch any tutorial on how to make a bird in photoshop and then do it and i get more view than the tutorial? If yes good for you but at that point nobody ever should stream because one guy had an idea to stream first and now we can't "copy" his idea anymore

      Really the only way this takes away anything is if the idea is just a huge, boring waste of time. If it's actual worthwhile content, this is building hype for the finished deck where as making content after would be trying to steal views by copying a successful concept.

      I highly suggest anyone trying to disprove me to go watch DarkViperAU's video series on react streamers and why they are parasites on content from smaller channels. No, big creators taking small creators ideas and using them for content does NOT give the small creator "exposure" as some want to argue here. Taking someone's idea and using it before they do is a dick move, no matter how you twist and turn it. Even more so if you're a big content creator like Rarran because you're just suffocating smaller creators. This is not a novel concept. This is why Rarran delisted his video until after the deck is finished. Attempting community engagement ≠ consent for others to take your idea.

  • @redwood1542
    @redwood1542 Рік тому +22

    I went to Day 1, it's community content - I don't think it's fair if any one person "owns" the deck list. Make whatever content you want.
    "Rules are quite simple. The most upvoted card after a day is the one i add to the deck. Can be any card, as long as it is not already in to keep it fresh. If Renathal gets added it will go on for another couple days. If i lack a card, i will craft and add it. Point is not wasting my dust (feel free to) but making the worst possible deck.
    After the deck is done i will play (and record if possible) it until i get a win in wild ranked match against a real (not bot) opponent on diamond 5-legend depending on my time.
    This is a fun idea i had, feel free to make it terrible. I imagine the worst deck to have the worst cards and not be 30 10-drops but its in the hands of the community now."

    People on reddit are getting angry because they wanted this idea to remain niche and unpopular so they can look at eachother and think "yes, we've all been through this since the beggining, together, partaking in this mysterious activity almost no knows about". They were getting a feeling of comradery and uniqueness from engaging in this process, as if they were in some kind of secret society.
    I'm pretty sure that's their perspective and I understand how it made them mad that you revealed their project to the public, but you are not in the wrong, they could have just as well feel proud that their idea was recognised as interesting and worth sharing but decided to instead get mad that the outsider is using their secret formula.

      Reddit bad bruh, my man you are genralizing, OP himself said that it was fine and that he will even start streaming some other decks for fun on his own channel. And more importantly, who exactly are we talking about here? What's the actual number of people who knew about this, wanted to watch the final stream but won't because they already saw this one? And if you believe that these people exist, are there more of them or are there more people who heard about the upcoming stream by watching this one?

    I see the biggest issue here is that someone on Reddit propped themselves up as an agent of morality and read so far between the lines that the answer they arrived at can be found on an English Composition exam. They then fired their conclusion into the void that is Reddit and the echo chamber ran with it until somehow Rarran was portrayed as a content stealing scumbag even though he did his due diligence and made sure to give credit where it was due. Those people need to log off of Reddit for a day.

    Interestingly I've been rewatching some videos on a topic similar to this. The first thing to note is the decklist or idea was posted on a public forum. It is now out there and people are allowed to use that for themselves. So the issue then becomes that Rarran is streaming/making videos, essentially taking somebody elses work for themselves? Well, actually no he isn't. The real thing comes down to transformation. The idea may have come from another person or website, but Rarran absolutely transformed the content into his own unique stream. He also morally did the right thing and credited where he got the idea and information from. But this is very similar to response or criticism videos on youtube. If somebody took Rarrans video and then criticized him or added tons of weird visuals, or even just discussed his strategies and what not, it would be considered different than the original piece. As long as content is transformed, it isn't theft, it becomes something new. Rarran you kind of say this yourself, it doesn't stop anybody else, including the person behind the ideas, to also stream or make videos or anything like that. Their content will be unique and will have a different experience to Rarran in a variety of ways.
    What I don't believe is a relevant point is the exposure argument. It doesn't matter how many people you are exposing it to at the end of the day. What matters is if you made the content your own, and naturally you did that. You didn't do anything wrong Rarran.

This situation is really similar to what happened to reynad when he was sharing the open development of the bazaar and some unique ideas were copied and implemented into other games before his own. I think the best way would've been to probably wait until they already had released something for you to direct people to. Cuz like you say, a lot of this audience don't really use Reddit, but if he already had a stream/video to plug that could actually have some beneficial impact in terms of exposure. That might be something this audience would be more open to.
    It's tricky for sure tho, becuz there is a big difference in creator size between you two. So when (in very basic terms) they have the idea, but you have the audience, it's hard to find the best and most equitable way for both creators to have a positive outcome.
    In short though, I don't think you did anything "wrong". But perhaps it could've been "more right", if that makes sense.

Thanks to that, I and a lot of people found this MTGOriginalDecks guy, and now he's at 100k subs. The idea of "stealing" ideas is just laughable

    I know it's been a month but, I found you through a video recommendation of one of the Reynad videos, I forget exactly which one it was. I only watched that video because I knew who Reynad was and I hadn't seen anything from him in a while so I watched it to see what was up. I use to play hearthstone and more recently (last few years) if I ever opened the game it was to play specifically battlegrounds. I don't play hearthstone anymore, I don't keep up with set releases or anything. I watched a few more of your videos, some of the guess how strong these mtg/yugioh etc cards are, but until your first video with Voxy I never watched a heap of your stuff. (I used to play MTG a lot and don't much anymore but I still watch some magic content sometimes so I knew of Voxy).
    Ever since that video I've been watching all of yours and Voxy's hearthstone stuff, I would never have known that, that deck was a thing that was being made by reddit, and likely due to how youtube works I would not have seen the video the person would've made on it, and even if I did, I likely would not have clicked on it. When I watch hearthstone videos I'm watching for the person presenting the video not the game or even the content of the video itself.
    I may or may not be in the minority with that experience but you making the video of that deck definitely made it reach a larger audience than the initial poster ever could've let it reach, if the reddit threads had more interaction maybe there would be a case for saying otherwise but it doesn't appear to be the case in this video.
    In my mind as an impartial observer that doesn't care about hearthstone in the slightest, you didn't do anything wrong. As you said in this video/stream, they put the idea out into the world what the world does with it cannot then be controlled by them.
    If you wanted to be more sensitive about this stuff in the future, perhaps messaging the creator before doing the idea yourself, then waiting for them to make the video, and then referencing that video as opposed to the reddit thread could be a good way to go about it without leaving a sour taste in peoples mouths. Even if you don't need to do something like this because there isn't anything wrong with what you did in the first place, it would at the very least give people a better feeling a perception towards you. It goes from a "This guy stole my idea before I got to do it." to a, "oh look this big creator thinks my idea is cool and would like to make their own video on it using mine as reference/a jumping off point."
    Sometimes even though you haven't done anything wrong you can definitely do things in such a way that leaves people more satisfied and happy. Whether or not that's something you care about is entirely up to you and I think most people wouldn't care either way.
    Personally I just love watching your content, I find your videos very funny and interesting spins on the classic hearthstone gameplay. They always make for a good viewing experience.
    Also as an MTG player I can't wait to see your MTG videos and watch you learn the game, hope to see coach Voxy on the sidelines in some of these too I think it would be very fun, you two make a great content duo.

    I see nothing wrong with what you did, in fact I come from a mtg background and this discussion happened/happens too often (ofc, because it's about content creation not the game itself)
    The content creator I follow mostly there (UMotivo) said some VERY good arguments why doing this kind of stuff is actually better for the smaller creator, the main one being the algorithm WILL most likely show the other person's on the recommended videos due to the fact that: 1- you two are playing the same-ish deck, 2- you actually mentioned him and will probably link his content alongside your, 3- you have a much bigger reach than reddit (I myself haven't touched hearthstone in 4+ years but watch you for content)
    So yeah, posting your gameplay is actually better for the person creating the deck, and i would say a bit more, you actually make your viewers aware of this hole community thing so they can actually follow and interact with it.
    Keep up with the great content Rarran 🎉🎉

    I dont think you did anything wrong here.
    The problem here, i think, is that people in niche bubbles tend to get really upset, when a "bid dude" gets involved in their stuff.
    Lets say you would have waited 10+ days after he finished his deck and then streamed the day 31 version bc you think it fits the theme better. The same people would have been upset about you "misusing" his idea.
    Even if you played the finished deck without changes, poeple would be upset. "Rarran has no original ideas anymore", "he has to copy ideas from a small community...", etc.
    And if you took the concept and created your own deck from scratch, there would have been comments calling you out for stealing the idea.
    A learning opportunity could be to weigh up, if an idea for conent, that didn't originate from you, would be worth the troubble should said community see you as intruder.
    In the artform of magic, no inventor would publish his trick and it's construction whilst constructing and complain if someone showed it before he put his last stamp on it.

First mistake, post a deck in public when your idea is to make a video from it, second mistake think that all your viewers would see their deck without you being in that video, and all the rest of the arguments you already stated. 1. You did give full credit to the guy, that should already have solved the issue.
    2. It’s an argument on Reddit, the angriest place on the internet.
    3. It’s a f***ing deck of cards. You can’t “copyright” a deck list and others shouldn’t be pissed if you run a modified version of it. Seriously, people mad over a deck list is incredibly childish. This is one of those arguments that makes me hate the internet and how stupid people are on it. Okay, so reaction content (which is basically what this was about for the people upset) is kinda complicated. I have seen some folks say it absolutely helped their content get wider exposure, while others have said it really doesn’t help much at all and their channel didn’t grow by more than a half dozen subscribers despite hundreds of thousands of views to the reactor. Which one is more often the case I got no clue, and I am not gonna tell anyone their experience is wrong.
    I get them being upset though, they put 40 hours into creating something someone then just watches and makes money off of with next to zero effort input by themselves.
    But Rarran’s video really doesn’t seem applicable to that. First, he actually played the deck. He didn’t just make a video looking at the current image and say what cards are in it for 10 minutes. The content of the stream was still Rarran DOING things, transformative art and all that.
    If the original creator reached out and asked Rarran to take down the stream then sure, it would be the considerate thing to do. But just playing a version of the deck on a stream is perfectly fine. The hearthstone reddit just sounds like it is full of insufferable assholes.

    I start writing this message while watching, so there are probably thing's you'll mention as well, but I want to share my "unbiased" opinion, I'm really curious how many of my statements you have as well. ;)
    I see no problem here - as you said, it's like taking someone's deck list and playing it yourself, that's pretty common in HS (and all other games) content creators world. Heck, I think there are very little content creators who creates their deck from scratch - and you don't watch their videos for these decks most of the time - rather their personalities.
    By analogy - he had idea for worst deck, it's like someone comes with "hey, this new card, King Toggwagle has nice effect, create some deck around it to mill your opponent!" and now many other players tries to create this deck (but that's not their idea). Bold statement - content creator like Kibler has to put much more efforts into their ideas, as they have to come up with cards and refining their deck list. Here it's community that did all this work, so this person contribution is idea and time to post all these reddit posts.
    So don't worry Rarran, in my opinion you did nothing wrong (not that my opinion is meaningful and changes anything :P), and remember - internet, especially reddit, especially HS subreddit can be really toxic and dumpster. People likes to voice their negativity and it's probably 0.1% of community that is the most vocal part. Also -there are people that don't like other successful people so they'll always find some way to show their frustration "because they're doing better than me!". :)

  • @captaincraboo

    the cause of misunderstanding here is quite simple: Rarran is a business, while this person is just a person. Every single one of Rarran's arguments here is somehow related to exposure, revenue, and things like that, while not everyone is actually pursuing these goals - the person just wanted dibs on experiencing the deck for the first time, it's that simple. If I came up with a wacky crowdsourced idea, for me it would be a fun and unique experience and I wouldn't want it to first become one in a long line of daily uploads of a popular streamer, it would take the fun out of the whole experience. That's why the XQC example doesn't work - none of you have that much personal attachment to content you pump out, so it is fair to discuss it in terms of revenue and such, after all it's basically just your daily video becoming another person's daily video, no big deal. Plus, they're both probably monetised, so it's just a fair business competition, nothing more; while if I created an idea meant explicitly for fun and someone decided to turn make money off it I'd be very very upset

    I get why people get mad about this.
    But my personal opinion is basically 100% what you're saying. I think the normal decklist analogy is on point. Someone produced a deck, you played it with a slight tweak and you gave them proper credit. That's it.
    I think there's some merit to the idea of "they want to be the first person to try their own idea" but I also agree with you that I think you actually give them more views rather than take away from them.
    If you wanted to play the full deck, I think there would be more of a case of being polite and waiting for a bit, but... you didn't even know they want to record that. And you made your own spin on this. So even the hypothetical bunch of people who only ever watch this deck once... have still the motivation to watch the full deck. Because that's the original idea. If any sort of spin on that idea makes people not want to watch this, then nobody would watch this at all - there has been plenty of "Imma play the worst crap" decks in the history.
    I think making the pause with the edited video is a nice and polite move and thumbs up for that. But I don't even think the DM prior to a stream would have been correct. Because that implies you actually care about their response. And I don't think that person has any right to tell you "no, you can't stream this spin on my deck". And asking without caring about the response is just disingenuous.

There is absolutely nothing done wrong in Rarran's part and I am saying this as someone fairly new to his content. Are we supposed to start looking for trademarks under deck builds now in fear that someone might feel robbed or offended If we use them? What is this world coming to man. At the end of the day If that person wanted to be the first to stream gameplay of these decks then maybe, just maybe it's on them for not doing that before posting it all online. Like others have said and because apparently silly drama like this happens often online and many times it won't be something you have control on, try just laughing it off and moving on.
