You're misunderstanding the premise. A pure swordsman/woman uses the sword maybe 90% of the time. True swordsman/woman uses the sword at least 75% of the time. Swordsmen/women are 50% sword users. Luffy is an 8% swordsman; only because while young, Luffy practiced with pipes.

To be fair, the databooks also stated that Shanks became a yonko before meeting Luffy, only for Oda to walk back on that. So I'd take the databooks with a grain of salt.

Sometimes their interpretation is wrong and you get inconsistencies. One of them said Sabo was dead. Death Note has a databook giving L an 8 in intellect and Near a 9 even though in the Manga Near literally said L was smarter than him

Imagine a guy who used to duel Mihawk on the reg isn’t a swordsman.
This is an incredible reach even Oda never went to such lengths to make the distinction. It shouldn’t matter if you live by the blade or if you have other means of fighting. If you have some degree of proficiency w a blade as in you know what you’re doing w it in combat, that should be enough to count you as a swordsman. As for the whole Shanks and Mihawk thing what would be the point in giving Mihawk the title of World’s STRONGEST(it translates literally to strongest and not greatest or best) and never altered that since the beginning of the series? Why make Zoro, Luffy’s first mate’s, goal a fraud? There’s nothing wrong with Shanks being number two, there’s nothing wrong with having characters stronger or on par with shanks outside of the yonko.

It's crazy how people don't want Zoro to equal Shanks or supass Shanks. But yet they say Luffy is going to surpass Roger.
It shows their true bias. All these videos and debates stem down to being about the potential in Zoro, to downplay both him and Mihawk.

The title strongest swordsman goes to Mihawk.

Has no wounds or scars.
People should stop hyping Shanks because he has such haki. The facts speak for Mihawk but I see them as equals, while Mihawk is the better swordsman, so stop being so biased.

Kizaru brought the sword out in order to handle the oncoming onslaught from Rayleigh. Rayleigh was absolutely a 'pure swordsman' regardless of affinity, Haki is just necessary to be able to operate in the new world.
This video triggered me several times.
Lemmar Campbell Oda purposely shows the difference with real swordsman by having their moves name involves sword style. Rayleigh has not been shown to have a sword style move to be confirmed as a pure swordsman .

One thing I disagree is counting movement technique against pure swordsman, even in traditional swordsmanship movement techniques are considered essential element of the craft, there is no way to fight effectively using a sword without effective footing and agility. Consider this: Himura Kenshin's Hiten Mitsurugi-ryū, literally the Flying Sword Style which has swift movement combined with the sword to devastating effect, now is Himura Kenshin not a pure swordsman?
Yes I thought that was strange as well I would consider Tashigi a pure swordswoman due to that being her main approach to fighting. Soru is a part of the rokushiki martial art but it when separated from it is basically super fast movement.
Y'all make this way too complicated when it doesn't need to be. Ask yourself one question? If you take the sword away from them, are they severely nerfed? If yes, then they are a pure swordsman. In this case it 100% applies to Zoro. Zoro with three swords stomps Zoro with no swords. Mihawk would be the same, Mihawk with blackblade stomps Mihawk with little dagger.
Think about Katakuri, spear is his main weapon, but you take away the spear he isn't even nerfed, Katakuri is not a pure spearman.

Facts. Soru is just a way to move fast and exists outside of rokushiki, tashigi just calls it soru cause she learned it from the Navy. Anyone who can move at high speed is almost always using soru. Just not many people decide to give a name too "moving really fast!" Outside of Rokushiki users. Lol

I disagree that Tashigi using soru in any way changes her status as a pure swordswoman.
Soru and geppou might be part of rokushiki. But they are movement techniques that could most certainly be incorporated into her blade style.
Saying soru stops her from being a pure swordswoman is like saying sword fighters are the one group of people that don't get to use superspeed.
Many people use super speed. And many people use air walking techniques. I don't think "pure swordsman" is that meaningful of a category.
Between shanks and mihawk I'd say you hit the mark with technique, but also their mission in life. Shanks is likely stronger than Mihawk. Big Mom with Nepoleon could be stronger than Mihawk. But those two are yonko first and foremost. Their goals in life revolves around piracy and their combat styles don't center around any sword based technique.
To beat shanks you just need better haki, but that won't teach you anything about Sword fighting. But for Zoro to beat Mihawk he needs to understand his fighting style as a swordsman.

Mihawk is stronger. The whole true swordsman debate is absolute nonsense. In the first ever swordsman fight in one piece, Zoro vs Cabaji. Cabaji used fire, knives a unicycle and Zoro still considered him a swordsman. To Zoro anybody that wields a sword is a swordsman. If we all believed this 'pure' swordsman nonsense then that means that the only 'swordsman' Zoro has fought for nearly 1000 chapters are Mihawk, Kuina and Ryuma.

Funny you mention Pirate Warriors 4, if you play as Zoro and beat Law Zoro says "I won't lose to anyone who calls themself a swordsman". Also Mihawk says fighting a yonko like Kaido or Big Mom should be "fun"

That it would be fun doesn't necessarily imply he can win or is on their level. I think he's above Akainu but below the Yonko.

How exactly would he know how strong Shanks currently is? They haven't dueled in a long time and when did Mihawk see him fight at all since? I mean it makes no sense. This is the games though, so until these things in the games has a connection in the manga, it's nothing more than a guess/assumption.

I’ll address each point separately because you have 3 going on, please pick one to continue with because I’m not in the mood to argue 3 things at once.
1.shanks was stopping a war where everyone was already beat and tired from fighting another yonko crew, you really think marines would wanna take that bet?
2.why is it so unbelievable for Zoro to be stronger than shanks?
3. You say yonko without their crew or territories are still yonko, why haven’t we heard of a yonko without a crew yet? Even gold roger who is widely considered the strongest pirate of all time had a crew.

Well, i think Mihawk has the title Worlds Strongest Swordsman for a reason. And i havent seen much evidence that Shanks has used anything other than swords ever, neither in the flashbacks nor against Mihawk, Akainu and Whitebeard. But to each their own.

This idea can be applied to soooooo many other series and I really wish people would do so. There are quite a few series where many characters USE swords or their fists but only a few of them are "swordsmen" and "martial artists." Just because a character swings a sword doesn't make them a swordsman.
I'm going to use a recent example. In the Fate Grand Order Babylonia anime there was a character, King Hassan, who has a sword but barely did anything with it in the show and people got upset. There is a moment in the game where he bests a real swordsman, Gawain a knight of the roundtable. Hassan isn't a better swordsman, he's just an extremely overpowered being capable of blocking sword swings with his cape. It's a lot like Law. Sure he wields a sword but his devil fruit is the thing that matters.

Corey Henderson Zoro wouldn’t be able to hold a candle to a first commander right now if he wanted to, Luffy will keep in progressing much faster than him and he better in every area, and he’s just the first commander. That’s okay, no other first commander besides Ben Beckman scales to their captain either, so he’s in great company with Killer, Sanji, Marco, Katakuri, etc in that regard. Luffy won’t be Yonko level after this arc and Zoro won’t be first commander level, and that’s okay too.
Zoro has always been weaker and always will be, and Jimbe coming in solidified his role as part of a big 3 outside of Luffy who outclasses all of his commanders by a margin, and that’s what captains do.
Luffy will be fighting on par with Yonko, and Zoro will be many steps behind as usual and only increasingly so as the story goes on. Luffy will be fighting with people on Shanks’ level and Zoro’s end goal will be someone way below Luffy like Mihawk.

Hello guys, I know nobody watch this video now but I would like to answer the question asked in this video again and to tell you how strong I think Mihawk is.
- The definition of a swordsman is "someone who fights with a sword", so "the world strongest swordsman" is the man who is more likely to win than anyone in One Piece in a sword fight.
- What is a sword fight ? Well, if you watch Skallagrim videos, you know that in the real world you can use many things in addition to your sword in a duel and still be considered a swordsman : you can use your bare hand (the one that doesn't carry the sword) to grab your opponent's weapon (his weapon and not only his sword, because you learn how to counter any fighting style in swordsmanship) , your feet to kick him, a shield to block his attacks etc... In One Piece, this definition should be applied as well : Zoro himself is very strong without his swords and uses kicks when he's about to be beaten ; Kaku and Fujitora are considered swordsmen both in databooks and the actual manga despite all the skills they have, so you could also consider Big Mom, Shanks and even Roger as swordsmen (also, Roger has fought Rocks with his sword, so you can tell that Roger uses it when he gets serious ; it's not decorative).
-What about haki ? If you use haoushouku haki in addition to your sword(s), are you still considered a swordsman ? Well, as I said before, you can use lots of things in a sword fight that are not swords : if you carry the sword during the fight, then you're a swordsman : when you see Big Mom holding Zeus in one hand, her sword in the other hand, and fighting on top of Prometheus's back in chapter 1008, she's still a swordswoman ; when you see Zoro using conqueror's haki against Monet and Kaido while slicing them, he's still a swordsman ; therefore, when you see Roger and Shanks clashing with Whitebeard (and using their sword in every fight they're in), using conqueror's haki or not, you have to consider them swordsmen.
-Here's my point : Shanks, Big Mom and Rayleigh are all living swordsmen (even Big Mom because she uses her sword each time she gets serious : it's not because she prefers to not use it against fodders like Luffy before Wano that she's not a swordswoman anymore ; for instance, take a look at Zoro : he has defeated enemies without his swords voluntarily, just like in Whiskey Peak, when he defeated Miss Monday). Because those three characters are swordsmen, Mihawk, "the strongest swordsman in the world", is stronger than each one of them. Conclusion : Mihawk is at least yonko level in strength and is stronger than Shanks.
-Also, there's an aspect of the story that I would like to point out : "meito" can be translated as "famous sword" ; that means that no blacksmith can forge a meito, because a sword becomes a meito by being wielded by powerful swordsmen, which is confirmed by the fact that a swordsman can make his sword more powerful by turning it into a black blade ; that would also explain why only Mihawk and Whitebeard are confirmed to wield a "saijo o wazamono" blade : that would be because they are among the strongest individuals in the series.
Just think about it : Oden and Zoro have been able to leave a scar on Kaido's body with Enma, which is so amazing that even Kaido himself respects them for that ; despite these feats, Enma is neither a black blade nor a saijo o wazamono, while Yoru, Mihawk's sword, is both at the same time (and we know Mihawk said that he had the most powerful black blade in the world) ; also, Vista, who is considered as almost as strong as Mihawk by lots of fans, has never been able to turn his blade into a black one despite being older than Mihawk and having more experience than him (both Mihawk and Vista are swordsmen since childhood since Oda drew them with a sword when they were kids) ; with those statements in mind, I would like you to ask a question to yourself : how strong do you have to become to make your sword that famous and powerful ?
Shanks is a true swordsman. every single time we have seen Shanks do anything remotely combat related, he pulled out his saber. Mihawk is stronger and to say otherwise is going against Oda. you're arguing against Oda and I am not. simple as that.

If an attack is named after a sword then they definitely are swordsman. Whitebeard used one of the 12 supreme swords his bisento just as a weapon but because of his devil fruit and bisento he never focused on neither just his haki. Roger has an attack named as a result of him being a swordsman. Law was trained as a swordsman before he had the ope ope no mi and incorporated both of them together. Shanks is a swordsman, that has always been a weapon of choice so as Rayleigh. All these people have swordsman skills

For sure the situation is confusing, but we don't even know how strong Mihawk really is... we know that A LOT.
A lot of people immediately dismiss the possibility of him being Yonko level just because they are totally set in the mind that Yonkos are the absolute strongest, but don't you forget that the crew is fighting yonkos right now, and the story has yet to go forward... powerful enemies of Yonko level will keep appearing.
The only reason I'm iffy on putting Mihawk up there with the absolute creme of the crop is because we have zero confirmed fights or even clashes from Mihawk with these higher tier characters. The best feat we've seen out of him is either his duels in the past with Shanks or Mihawk embarrassing Jinbei (something Katakuri also did). Meanwhile, we've seen Shanks clash with Akainu and WB as well as somehow preventing Kaidou the World's Strongest Creature from coming to Marineford (not necessarily saying they fought, but the fact stands Shanks did accomplish this feat somehow).
Before I learned Shanks became a yonkou 6 years ago, I assumed Mihawk was right up there with Shanks without question. However, Shanks dueled Mihawk back when he legitimately got scarred by Blackbeard. Blackbeard without any DFs may have been worthy of the 2nd division commander position (i.e. some form of commander level) but he was without question NOT yonkou level. Which means it was highly unlikely Shanks was yonkou level back when he fought Blackbeard or Mihawk for that matter.
However, I definitely expect not only Shanks but Mihawk has improved since their duels back in the day, but currently there is nothing definitive for me to put Mihawk up there with the yonkou. Now, I'm hoping Mihawk is going to have a good showing when the marines come after him preferably with an admiral, so we can get an actual grasp on what Mihawk can do against top tiers. Once we get some kind of positive confirmation of Mihawk's current prowess l'd be happy to go back to where I thought they were virtually even.
Because clashing with admirals is something I expect out of 1st commanders, I expect yonkou-level characters to push them to something more serious. And while it's easy to see Mihawk and Fujitora having that serious fight (especially considering it's possible Sabo was the one that gave Fujitora that head woound) I get a bit more skeptical when I think about Mihawk and Akainu.
P.S. Shanks said he was on guard, so I'm much less inclined to think Blackbeard got Shanks with a "cheap shot," or anything of the sort.

i think it was more justifying why its ok to see shanks as stronger despite the title mihawk has. it seems that its just a personal thing to see him as stronger but its ok to see mihawk as stronger too because both sides have valid justifications like the title or the potential that shanks isnt considered a swordsman due to other factors that could be in his style of fighting but nothing is confirmed until something happens like shanks stating mihawk surpassed him or something of the sort.

Martial Arts basically translates to 'War Arts' or 'Art of War' so anyone who practices any kind of fighting, armed or unarmed, professionally is a Martial Artist.
No exception, if you are a pro fighter, you practice the art of fighting and thus the Art of War.
I feel like KOL is saying their style is more of that of a brawler than that of a martial artist who has refined themselves to a fighting style after training. While Luffy is more of a devil fruit based fighter and Franky using his tech, people like Jinbe and Bon Clay use a kenpo mainly as their approach to combat.

Filipino martial arts (Escrima/Kali/Arnis) has some of, if not the best knife fighting in recorded history. A practitioner of those martial arts without a blade however isn't really that impressive compared to schools that specialize in hand-to-hand.

I usually don't like power scaling but this is how I see it: At Marineford, Mihawk sends a slash at Whitebeard to see the gap between them... while Shanks clashes with Whitebeard straight up. When Shanks arrives at the war Mihawk leaves immediately. When they meet up Shanks literally asks if Mihawk wants a fight, but Mihawk backs down. Mihawk fans go ahead and tell me what I'm missing here lol because I'm siding with red-hair on this one.

I think a lot of people are underestimating mihawk I wouldn’t 100% say his emperor level like some but I definitely don’t think he’s below all the commanders. Like anyone who actually believes that he’s below Jack is brain dead. A lot of people use zoro EOS as their prediction to how strong Mihawk is. I think the safest bet is to say that he’s somewhere around admiral level because if he was a Marine he would definitely be that strong.
Yeah, some people heavily underestimate him, but some others overestimate him to the point of saying he's Yonko level or above. I think the frequent duels he and Shanks used to have were in their 20's, and at some point in his 30's Shanks evolved faster thus becoming a Yonko at 35. If Mihawk was as strong as Shanks, the marines would've sent at least 2 admirals to capture him.

And Shank's shotgun was not cannon. I think that Shanks is the strongest haki user by far in OPverse. We don't know what the strongest king's haki user can do, but I can imagine him uses the force of his king's aura in his fights. A true swordman will use pure showrdmanship. Mihawk for example will use King's haki (if he has) but not as a main weapon. The thing here is if a character uses something as a main weapon then this difine what category he is.

It doesn't matter if shanks is a pure swordsman or not at the end he still a swordsman. Some of you guy sayed mihawk title doesn't matter. I disagree with that. Look at it this way mihawk can't fight shanks then become the world strongest over night. Mihawk fought countless swordsmen before shanks. Shanks couldn't beat mihawk but zoro is going to.
Shanks probably uses the same fighting style Roger did; and Roger's fighting style appears to be inspired by the classic idea of a pirate: Swashbuckling sword, flintlock pistol. Roger in general is basically the epitome of classic pirate in design.
I think shanks and Mihawk as individuals are equal, only reason shanks is considered a yonko is because of his crew. There’s no proof that shanks or mihawk are stronger than one another.

IMO you should count characters in One Piece as "Swordsmen" when they can use sword techniques without the usage of either Haki or Devil Fruit Powers. As for who is stronger right now, I don't think we can tell that for certain. Neither Mihawk nor Shanks have shown what they're truly capable of. But my head canon tells me that Shanks got to have insane Haki skills because he's still a Yonko with only one arm.
