Exactly Vista literally says he’s honoured that Mihawk actually knows who he is, and considering that vista is called a “great swordsman”, that says a lot about Mihawk’s standing as the world’s strongest swordsman.
All the people saying shanks isn't a swordman are dumb.Its stated by oda he's a top tier swordsman and Everytime he fights he pulls out a sword.Also mihawk is only interested in swordman, so why tf would he be rivels and have duels with someone who isn't a swordman? 😂
Reasons why mihawk is stronger manga facts 1.In chapter 434 when shanks goes on whitebeard ship they talk and whitebeard brings up shanks legendary duel with mihawk not many speak of the legend anymore and even though it was so long ago it was still fresh in his memory this is no doubt two armed shanks competing with mihawk right after this they talk about shanks losing his arm and being shocked 2.mihawk said in chap 50 to zoro if you're a competent swordsman, you don't need to cross swords to know that i far surpass your puny skills so you're gonna tell me mihawk does not know how strong his previous rival(shanks) just by looking at him heck shanks should be able to do the same to mihawk as well as another swordsman ,and by all means mihawk should understand better than anyone where shanks strength lies just from this statement alone because they are both swordsmen ,and on top of that if mihawk knows how strong two handed shanks is and they had legendary duels back in the day and now that he has only one he will not fight him doesn't it speak for itself that shanks with one hand isn't as strong a swordsman as with two hands with how mihawk views him 3. in chapter 96 mihawk goes to see shanks shanks says you coming to challenge me and mihawk responds with i don't challenge one armed has beens the definition of a has been is this a person or thing considered to be outmoded(old-fashioned) or no longer of any significance this is how mihawk views current shanks even in marineford maybe its trolling but many people wanna say oh mihawk ran away from shanks ...no mihawk has already said how he feels about shanks he is doing nothing but holding true to the words he told shanks to his face in 96 4.chap 52 zoro vs mihawk chapter mihawk tells zoro after defeating him My name is Dracule mihawk its too soon for you to die. You haven't been watching one piece then. Shanks is clearly stronger. Did kaido think of mihawk as someone who could fight him? No mihawk couldn't even get passed crocodile at marineford 😂😂😂
People always take that SBS question and automatically assume Oda is saying Shanks isn’t a swordsman, but never consider the possibility that he’s nudging us to think about the sword style of a one-armed swordsman.
I think Mihawk was already the worlds strongest swordsman and that is why shanks first started challenging him and having duels. This is when ppl started noticing that there’s someone who can match the world strongest swordsman. But their duels were inconclusive as shanks did not manage to defeat mihawk. After shanks lost his arm, he continued to become stronger (likewise mihawk). But he no longer grows at the rate of mihawk which made him lose interest in the duels, as mihawk knows that he has outgrown him in strength ever since he lost his arm. By trying to find someone that is stronger than his rival shanks, this statement shows that in order to defeat mihawk for his title, the new challenger has to be stronger than shanks. Thus, the only conclusion is that mihawk is stronger than shanks. Side note: it will be narratively weird if shanks is stronger than mihawk… because after zoro defeats mihawk, he isn’t the worlds strongest swordsman… shanks is. LOL
There are a lot of facts that Mihawk is stronger than Shanks 1.Official, Shanks is a swordsman, but Mihawk is still the most powerful swordsman (although some say that Shanks is NOT ONLY a swordsman, the official vivre card data book clearly describes that he is a swordsman) 2.Mihawk's official vivre card records clearly state that he is currently waiting for someone stronger than Shanks. It follows that Shanks is no longer seen as a challenge. 3.Shanks in favor of many people arguing that he is an emperor, while Mihawk is just a Shichibukai. Being an emperor means not only being strong, you need territory, political influence, and a strong crew / fleet. In the absence of the latter, Mihawk would never be an emperor, nor would he care. 4.Mihawk vs Jozu / Vista: Many bring up these clashes against Mihawk but the answer is quite simple. Before Mihawk attacked White Beard, he mentioned that he just wanted to know how much of a difference they were. After Jozu fought off his attack, he realized at that moment that this was the difference between them: the good crewmates. This is the thing that makes Mihawk never be stronger than Whitebeard. In the case of Vista, he just didn’t take him seriously. When he was still fighting Zoro on East Blue, he mentioned "I'm different from those who give their all just to hunt down a rabbit," and that's exactly what happened to Vista. Mihawk is a man who longs for only one thing and that is a challenge, but once he got to the top there was nothing and no one and no worthy opponent. Shanks was the only one he considered challenging until he lost his arm. I can imagine Mihawk was angry with Luffy and that’s why he scolded Marineford to find out if it was really worth Shanks sacrificing all their rivalry for. And that’s exactly why I think when he trained Zoro, he did it not because of Zoro, but because of himself, because he sees in it a rival who may one day outdo Shanks and be a worthy opponent. Tbh, I think using a swords doesn’t make you a swordsman, I think swordsman is a title given to you if you fight and all your abilities are based of the sword. Example, Roger was never considered or stated to be a swordsman even though he fights with a sword
Just to add on to this thread: (1) Mihawk is the only character in the series that has not sweat / had a reaction when Shanks arrives. (2) When Greenbull felt Shanks crew approaching he did not want to fight them. Greenbull referenced the crew not just Shanks. Mihawk CAME TO Shanks crew in East Blue with no sign of fear. (3) Speaking of fear....at Battle at Marineford, Boa Hancock makes a comment about Mihawk saying "Even skilled soldiers would tremble and freeze from fear just by looking into his eyes" This shows that Shanks is not the only one capable of instilling fear into others. As stated above, Mihawk never has a scared or worried reaction when he sees Shanks. I don't think Shanks and Mihawk fear tactics work on each other due to them being comparable in power to each other. (4) When Shanks is talking to Whitebeard on Whitebeards ship Shanks tells Whitebeard that he's had countless battles with scars and the scar on his face was not given to him by Mihawk but Blackbeard. Shanks low key admits Mihawk is capable of scathing him. Mihawk, as far as we know, doesn't show to have any visible scars.

If you had a gun to my head and told me who was the true haki master between Shanks and Mihawk I'd choose Mihawk. He's the only top tier who's solely devoted to strength and being a fighter.
I think Mihawk has better observation and possibly armament, but shanks has the edge in conquerers. As you said, Mihawk is a fighter, but conquerer‘s haki is strongest in leaders, and Shanks seems to fit that role more than Mihawk, who generally relies on himself and no one else.

@@juicyjfan Well, Zoro used it to specifically tame Enma, which is what gave him such a boost. Sure, Mihawk probably has CH too, but don’t forget, „Conqueror“ is one translation, another being „supreme king“, and it has been emphasized that strong leaders like Luffy, Roger or Whitebeard make excellent users. Even Rayleigh was first mate to the pirate king. Mihawk may have the willpower to become the strongest swordsman, but he seems to prefer the „lone wolf“ approach rather than leading a crew. Again, I think this is why his observation haki is so emphasized. Because he’s more of an individual fighter than leader.
Its a fun discussion when people dont take it too seriously. My opinion is that Mihawk would win in a 1v1 extreme high diff but what makes Shanks stronger than Mihawk could ever be is his crew. Unless Shanks has compensated and is no longer a swordsman because Oda has confirmed Mihawks title in manga in sbs in databook i dont see Zoro defeating Shanks to become the WSS
Just a question, if Mihawk can see that Zoro is weak, right before crossing swords with him, why does he piss his pants right before the last clash? There is a clear panel where he is sweating , like he sees death.
Wtf reading through all these comments saying Mihawk, what is wrong with you people? Anyone with more than a single digit IQ will understand Akainu is the top dog of One Piece. If Gorosei told Akainu to bring Mihawk and Shanks in he would go and 1v2 them and throw them in Impel down.
When Anakin Skywalker lost both his legs and an arm, he became less powerful; because their were less midichlorians for him to manipulate the force with. Darth Vadar is FAR stronger than Anakin ever was, but how can this be? Simple, becoming an amputee reduced Vadar's POTENTIAL. Shanks is WAY stronger than when he lost his arm, but he can no longer become the world's greatest swordsman. He can still punch people though.
I think the fight between them would be very close. I think their is more to the battle between them than just swordsmanship. i.e Shanks or Mihawk may have other abilities that can compensate and suprise their opponents, and battles in one Piece are more nuinaced. I would give the slight edge to mihawk in the battle.

Zoro who after figuring out King's Lunarian ability and taking control over Enma, mid diffed King who is the second strongest of the Beast Pirates. Well I guess Vista would just destroy Zoro at this point of the story. 🙄 "Mihawk couldn't get past Crocodile" Even though Mihawk's bounty is over 1.5 billion berries higher, while Crocodile still has his underworld connections and subordinates of his own. For Mihawk his bounty is just to do with his strength.
Not sure if Big Mom is to be considered a swordswoman, she seems like to be a King-like fighter and doesn't put that much importance on being a swordsman
@nightmare night Law IS a swordsman he primarily uses his sword in battle and Oda categorizes him as much in the databooks, him having a devil fruit doesn't make him anyless of a swordsman since he pretty much always uses his devil fruit in conjunction with his sword, in fact he pretty much needs his sword in order to properly display his devil fruit capabilities, without his sword Law's devil capablities will be heavily nerfed and vice-versa, Law's devil fruit acts as a force multiplier for his swordsmanship, for Law his devil fruit abilities are apart of his swordsmanship...they go hand in hand.

King is not called a swordsman, yet he mainly uses his own sword. Maybe it's a wink from Oda saying, the swordsman can be this, but that doesn't mean that he can't use this other to be stronger. Using characters like Big mom and Law as an example, a character can be a swordsman and also be something other than a swordsman, not rely on that characteristic.
@@whatthatbout4629 If we take that as an example, Law is a swordsman, when he uses his sword, but the character doesn't depend on it, even one of his strongest attacks doesn't specifically include the sword. Perhaps it is an Oda way of telling us, a character can be a swordsman, but also be something else, not depend solely on the sword.
Shiryu is comparable to Kaido, if BB is Luffy's next big bad. Shiryu makes Kaido look like a bitch, if Luffy has a big bad to level up on before facing Blackbeard.
I hope that they confirm that Mihawk won the duels. Because if Mihawk is just the strongest because Shanks lost an arm it would really lessen Zoros ambition.
Been the strongest swordmen does not necessarily mean been the strongest men. Even though Shanks might not be as strong as Mihawk in terms of swordsmanship does not mean he is weaker than Mihawk.

@@simphiwebreiter1507 People just choose to ignore Mihawks whole character and downplay him off that. Mihawk is almost never interested people act like he couldnt just spam those one handed slashes. People act like Mihawk being blocked means something but when Kizaru gets blocked and needs help to beat Marco no one downplays him because of that. Im not saying Shanks couldnt have a different fighting style just that if its mainly based on his sword it makes no sense for Zoro to be chasing Mihawk and i doubt he would defeat Shanks to achieve his dream

One eyed is different from one armed, I do believe Shanks is stronger but not by much. Honestly, I think it’s a lose lose for Mihawk to fight Shamks, before he became a yonko if he wins or loses he lost/won to a one armed man. On the other hand I thought Shanks is priorities are different after losing his arm, I think Mihawk knows that and was forced to look for a challenge elsewhere which leads to Zoro. They both have new rivals Luffy and Zoro, the future and new generation that can truly give them a challenge in their field. If Shanks would win though would he take both titles and be seen as greater than the yonko? Just curious

Big Mom isn’t said to not be swordsman and she uses Giants Swordsmanship but regardless I think both of them are stronger anyway. I would consider Kizaru a swordsman as well.
@@zagessj I'd say Oda classifies swordsmen as people that use swordsmanship as their primary means of combat i.e. the combat the style they feel most comfortable with/use the most often in a fight...so I wouldn't really say Kizaru is a swordsman since sword play is only his secondary means of fighting as proven in the fact that Kizaru uses dashing/kicking and flashy laser projectile attacks way more often than uses swordsmanship...so Oda would more so classify Kizaru as a kenpo martial artist with a hint flashy laser moves rather than a swordsman but the fact that Oda categorizes Shanks as a swordsman means that in Oda's eyes swordsmanship is Shank's primary fighting style and that he's at his best when he's wielding a sword

Shirohige has a Naginata and yet in Marineford they mention that Mihawk has the strongest thrust in the world, due to the title of the strongest swordsman, that includes haki. But that doesn't make Mihawk stronger than Shirohige or that he has a stronger haki, even Mihawk knowing that Shirohige had lost power in his words recognizes some inferiority. In other words, Shirohige was still very powerful and that is why Oda seeks to nerf him in different ways as much as he can. So what does he differentiate Mihawk from Shirohige in cutting ability? It is easy, for Mihawk it is a necessity, it is his main weapon, because Mihawk enters into a total swordsman concept, that does not apply with Shirohige, because for him the Naginata is not the only thing he has, it is not his main attack power, it is an extension and exercises it in different ways. Mihawk seeks to fulfill what he wants the sword to cut, Shirohige does not. Based on that, Mihawk can cut more than Shirohige even having the weakest haki and Shirohige being the strongest overall. I focus on common cutting ability as one of the qualities of a swordsman. Therefore in my opinion Mihawk will be stronger than Shanks, as long as Shanks enters the same concept of total swordsman as Mihawk, that is, they can be measured specifically in the use of the sword. Haki is an extension of the characters' power, it reflects their abilities, so Shanks's Haki focus should be entirely on the sword. If Shanks gets out of that framework and is someone more mixed then he in a general concept if he can be stronger than Mihawk. Otherwise no, meanwhile Mihawk is stronger than Shanks. In Big Mom's case it's different because she doesn't fall into a total swordsman category like Mihawk, she uses a lot of elemental Homies, she doesn't mind fighting with her fists. Big mom would enter the category of a warrior, she does not depend solely on Napoleon. Also, in general terms, she is terrible in battle.
The reason why I think shanks is stronger is because Shanks portrail in the series is significantly greater throughout the series as presented by oda. Even though Zoro has conqueror's haki, this does not mean that mihawk does as well. Unless it is shown that a sword changes to a black blade due to conqueror's haki I don't think he might it. I feel like shanks has the greatest conqueror's haki in the series and mihawk has the greatest observation haki in the series and his name and portrail suggests. Due to unlocking conqueror's haki maybe might be the way for zoro to in the future surpass them both. Don't get me wrong I think mihawk should have conqueror's cause of his title being the world's strongest swordsman. Shanks is Kaido's top 5 while mihawk is not and mihawk clearly became famous before shanks and during the great pirate era so there is no way Kaido doesn't know of mihawk's existence yet he is not in the top 5 of Kaido. Shanks is the person alive in his top 5 btw, the rest are rolling their graves. Which is in otherwords the same as saying "the only one who should be able TO fight me rn is Shanks" that Sbs also said shanks was a yonko was yonko in Luffy which is obviously false as by the time Luffy was ready to set sail and form his crew shanks would of only been a yonko for 4 years. Its nearly impossible for Shanks to be some secret WSS. So if he is stronger he isnt a swordsman thus his fighting style will be mainly based on something else. I dont see Zoro defeating Shanks to become the WSS.
I swear to God it's just going to be explained in the story as mihawk doesn't consider shanks a true swordsman anymore and that's why he's not in the consideration for the title or some dumb-ass crap like that. Cuz there's really no good reason for mihawk to be stronger than shanks unless he has some secret narrative purpose beyond just being the goalposts for Zoro
Mihawk is the only character that we have seen fight, that hasnt been damaged on screen or in lore. He is a beast, but my bias says shanks is stronger still.

He has, shanks has a named blade called griffin and it is one of the supreme blades, oda also confirmed shanks is a swordsman, he confirmed both in an sbs (separate ones) if you don’t believe me you can look em up, they were rivals so if mihawk is the wws then shanks is a close second
Mihawk might be stronger than Shanks, but he hasn’t proved it yet!!! Shanks right now is looking far superior than Mihawk when it comes to feats, so I think fans should be inclined to say Shanks is stronger until Mihawk proves otherwise!!!!

Mihawk's portrayal puts him at Yonko level above characters like Big Mom and the Admirals, but he hasn't DONE anything yet that can confirm the speculation!!! Shanks confirmed he's a top tier by one shotting Kid AND Killer!!!! That's the difference between narrative/portrayal and feats, one is speculation the other is proof!!!!
Mihawk has never even once shown a named attack at all.. he literally cut an ungodly massive frozen tsunami that was bigger than an island with total ease, with nothing more than a simple average swing of his sword.. not even with a named attack whatsoever! Just a simple average normal sword swing. That was enough to cut that giant frozen tsunami entirely, like it was nothing. That’s pretty damn impressive! Mihawk could quite possibly very well be the most offensively powerful & deadliest character in the series as of current. I mean think about it.. Zoro was able to give Kaido a pretty deep scar & wound, even after he was already completely trashed/beaten to shit & not a full power etc.. & Also Oden being able to almost beat him as a swordsman too.. So if Zoro & Oden both could do that to Kaido.. then… well… doesn’t it logically stand to reason that Mihawk would most certainly & undoubtedly be able to cut Kaido down in a 1v1 battle between the two?? It just logically makes sense that Mihawk could certainly beat Kaido, & is even more offensively dangerous/deadly than him. I mean it simply just makes sense honestly.

So far even Oden is stronger than Mihawk. Kaido is stronger than Mihawk, that's going to stay that way, and Oden for Kaido, from everything Kaido talks about the character, the entire narrative, Oden at least was Kaido's equal or could kill Kaido in battle, with all that , Oden would be stronger than Mihawk.

Without forgetting that Oden remained in Kaido's memory all those years, even his haki recognized, and added additional information from Vvre Cards or data books. Zoro was only a game for Kaido, while Oden for Kaido is one of the strongest, almost like the archenemy.

i also think the same, plus when mihawk came go shanks, shanks said "did you come here to *settle the score* " implying that mihawk lost the previous 1v1, but mihawk was disinterested as shanks lost his dominant arm

Swordsmanship and overall strength are two completely different things,that list doesn't change anything,people are like"oda confirmed mihawk> shanks" but that isn't the case at all, roger was a swordsman rivaled only by "the worlds strongest man" and he wasn't the worlds strongest swordsman, again like i said the is a difference between swordsmanship and overall strength and the "lost arm=lost eye" argument was just weak sight can be replaced by observation haki, kuzan lost a leg and he probably became stronger, saying that shanks became weaker is just false,we know shanks is going to fight a prime luffy and blackbeard(who will probably be the strongest characters by that time) shanks in story portrail is way better than mihawks,when oda uses shanks,he uses him with extrem respect and never makes shanks look bad,shanks role in the story is way larger than mihawks,so it makes sense that he is stronger, and shanks is who luffy( the main character who will be the strongest character eos) must surpass, oda didn't even make that list,it was just fan art and devil fruit users who have skill beyond just sword fighting were on that list,which surprised me

In terms of swordmanship currently it is mihawk, in overall combat it is Shanks in my opinion. I think that mihawk became the strongest swordman either by beating shanks in a duel or when shanks lost his arm and made mihawk the strongest by default. Mihawk could be in the Yonko level but the problem he has no leadership status and no crew. The reason why Shanks became one is with his leadership, charisma, skills and talent. Whitebeard respects Mihawk and talks about him to Shanks if he is the one who cut his arm.

1.In chapter 434 when shanks goes on whitebeard ship they talk and whitebeard brings up shanks legendary duel with mihawk not many speak of the legend anymore and even though it was so long ago it was still fresh in his memory this is no doubt two armed shanks competing with mihawk right after this they talk about shanks losing his arm and being shocked
2.mihawk said in chap 50 to zoro if you're a competent swordsman, you don't need to cross swords to know that i far surpass your puny skills so you're gonna tell me mihawk does not know how strong his previous rival(shanks) just by looking at him heck shanks should be able to do the same to mihawk as well as another swordsman ,and by all means mihawk should understand better than anyone where shanks strength lies just from this statement alone because they are both swordsmen ,and on top of that if mihawk knows how strong two handed shanks is and they had legendary duels back in the day and now that he has only one he will not fight him doesn't it speak for itself that shanks with one hand isn't as strong a swordsman as with two hands with how mihawk views him

People always take that SBS question and automatically assume Oda is saying Shanks isn’t a swordsman, but never consider the possibility that he’s nudging us to think about the sword style of a one-armed swordsman.
What chapter did oda draw the yonkou at their strongest
I think Mihawk was already the worlds strongest swordsman and that is why shanks first started challenging him and having duels. This is when ppl started noticing that there’s someone who can match the world strongest swordsman. But their duels were inconclusive as shanks did not manage to defeat mihawk.
After shanks lost his arm, he continued to become stronger (likewise mihawk). But he no longer grows at the rate of mihawk which made him lose interest in the duels, as mihawk knows that he has outgrown him in strength ever since he lost his arm.
By trying to find someone that is stronger than his rival shanks, this statement shows that in order to defeat mihawk for his title, the new challenger has to be stronger than shanks.
Thus, the only conclusion is that mihawk is stronger than shanks.
Side note: it will be narratively weird if shanks is stronger than mihawk… because after zoro defeats mihawk, he isn’t the worlds strongest swordsman… shanks is. LOL
There are a lot of facts that Mihawk is stronger than Shanks
1.Official, Shanks is a swordsman, but Mihawk is still the most powerful swordsman (although some say that Shanks is NOT ONLY a swordsman, the official vivre card data book clearly describes that he is a swordsman)
2.Mihawk's official vivre card records clearly state that he is currently waiting for someone stronger than Shanks. It follows that Shanks is no longer seen as a challenge.
3.Shanks in favor of many people arguing that he is an emperor, while Mihawk is just a Shichibukai. Being an emperor means not only being strong, you need territory, political influence, and a strong crew / fleet. In the absence of the latter, Mihawk would never be an emperor, nor would he care.
4.Mihawk vs Jozu / Vista: Many bring up these clashes against Mihawk but the answer is quite simple. Before Mihawk attacked White Beard, he mentioned that he just wanted to know how much of a difference they were. After Jozu fought off his attack, he realized at that moment that this was the difference between them: the good crewmates. This is the thing that makes Mihawk never be stronger than Whitebeard. In the case of Vista, he just didn’t take him seriously. When he was still fighting Zoro on East Blue, he mentioned "I'm different from those who give their all just to hunt down a rabbit," and that's exactly what happened to Vista.
Mihawk is a man who longs for only one thing and that is a challenge, but once he got to the top there was nothing and no one and no worthy opponent. Shanks was the only one he considered challenging until he lost his arm. I can imagine Mihawk was angry with Luffy and that’s why he scolded Marineford to find out if it was really worth Shanks sacrificing all their rivalry for. And that’s exactly why I think when he trained Zoro, he did it not because of Zoro, but because of himself, because he sees in it a rival who may one day outdo Shanks and be a worthy opponent.

Tbh, I think using a swords doesn’t make you a swordsman, I think swordsman is a title given to you if you fight and all your abilities are based of the sword. Example, Roger was never considered or stated to be a swordsman even though he fights with a sword

Just to add on to this thread:
(1) Mihawk is the only character in the series that has not sweat / had a reaction when Shanks arrives.
(2) When Greenbull felt Shanks crew approaching he did not want to fight them. Greenbull referenced the crew not just Shanks. Mihawk CAME TO Shanks crew in East Blue with no sign of fear.
(3) Speaking of fear....at Battle at Marineford, Boa Hancock makes a comment about Mihawk saying "Even skilled soldiers would tremble and freeze from fear just by looking into his eyes" This shows that Shanks is not the only one capable of instilling fear into others. As stated above, Mihawk never has a scared or worried reaction when he sees Shanks.
I don't think Shanks and Mihawk fear tactics work on each other due to them being comparable in power to each other.
(4) When Shanks is talking to Whitebeard on Whitebeards ship Shanks tells Whitebeard that he's had countless battles with scars and the scar on his face was not given to him by Mihawk but Blackbeard. Shanks low key admits Mihawk is capable of scathing him. Mihawk, as far as we know, doesn't show to have any visible scars.

If you had a gun to my head and told me who was the true haki master between Shanks and Mihawk I'd choose Mihawk. He's the only top tier who's solely devoted to strength and being a fighter.
I think Mihawk has better observation and possibly armament, but shanks has the edge in conquerers. As you said, Mihawk is a fighter, but conquerer‘s haki is strongest in leaders, and Shanks seems to fit that role more than Mihawk, who generally relies on himself and no one else.

Sure, Mihawk probably has CH too, but don’t forget, „Conqueror“ is one translation, another being „supreme king“, and it has been emphasized that strong leaders like Luffy, Roger or Whitebeard make excellent users. Even Rayleigh was first mate to the pirate king. Mihawk may have the willpower to become the strongest swordsman, but he seems to prefer the „lone wolf“ approach rather than leading a crew.

Simple, becoming an amputee reduced Vadar's POTENTIAL. Shanks is WAY stronger than when he lost his arm, but he can no longer become the world's greatest swordsman. He can still punch people though.
I think the fight between them would be very close. I think their is more to the battle between them than just swordsmanship. i.e Shanks or Mihawk may have other abilities that can compensate and suprise their opponents, and battles in one Piece are more nuinaced. I would give the slight edge to mihawk in the battle.

@nightmare night Law IS a swordsman he primarily uses his sword in battle and Oda categorizes him as much in the databooks, him having a devil fruit doesn't make him anyless of a swordsman since he pretty much always uses his devil fruit in conjunction with his sword, in fact he pretty much needs his sword in order to properly display his devil fruit capabilities, without his sword Law's devil capablities will be heavily nerfed and vice-versa, Law's devil fruit acts as a force multiplier for his swordsmanship, for Law his devil fruit abilities are apart of his swordsmanship...they go hand in hand.

Honestly, I think it’s a lose lose for Mihawk to fight Shamks, before he became a yonko if he wins or loses he lost/won to a one armed man.
On the other hand I thought Shanks is priorities are different after losing his arm, I think Mihawk knows that and was forced to look for a challenge elsewhere which leads to Zoro.

Big Mom isn’t said to not be swordsman and she uses Giants Swordsmanship but regardless I think both of them are stronger anyway. I would consider Kizaru a swordsman as well.

@@zagessj I'd say Oda classifies swordsmen as people that use swordsmanship as their primary means of combat i.e. the combat the style they feel most comfortable with/use the most often in a fight...so I wouldn't really say Kizaru is a swordsman since sword play is only his secondary means of fighting as proven in the fact that Kizaru uses dashing/kicking and flashy laser projectile attacks way more often than uses swordsmanship...so Oda would more so classify Kizaru as a kenpo martial artist with a hint flashy laser moves rather than a swordsman but the fact that Oda categorizes Shanks as a swordsman means that in Oda's eyes swordsmanship is Shank's primary fighting style and that he's at his best when he's wielding a sword

Shirohige has a Naginata and yet in Marineford they mention that Mihawk has the strongest thrust in the world, due to the title of the strongest swordsman, that includes haki. But that doesn't make Mihawk stronger than Shirohige or that he has a stronger haki, even Mihawk knowing that Shirohige had lost power in his words recognizes some inferiority. In other words, Shirohige was still very powerful and that is why Oda seeks to nerf him in different ways as much as he can.
So what does he differentiate Mihawk from Shirohige in cutting ability? It is easy, for Mihawk it is a necessity, it is his main weapon, because Mihawk enters into a total swordsman concept, that does not apply with Shirohige, because for him the Naginata is not the only thing he has, it is not his main attack power, it is an extension and exercises it in different ways. Mihawk seeks to fulfill what he wants the sword to cut, Shirohige does not.
Based on that, Mihawk can cut more than Shirohige even having the weakest haki and Shirohige being the strongest overall.
I focus on common cutting ability as one of the qualities of a swordsman.
Therefore in my opinion Mihawk will be stronger than Shanks, as long as Shanks enters the same concept of total swordsman as Mihawk, that is, they can be measured specifically in the use of the sword. Haki is an extension of the characters' power, it reflects their abilities, so Shanks's Haki focus should be entirely on the sword. If Shanks gets out of that framework and is someone more mixed then he in a general concept if he can be stronger than Mihawk.
Otherwise no, meanwhile Mihawk is stronger than Shanks.
In Big Mom's case it's different because she doesn't fall into a total swordsman category like Mihawk, she uses a lot of elemental Homies, she doesn't mind fighting with her fists. Big mom would enter the category of a warrior, she does not depend solely on Napoleon. Also, in general terms, she is terrible in battle.
The reason why I think shanks is stronger is because
Shanks portrail in the series is significantly greater throughout the series as presented by oda. Even though Zoro has conqueror's haki, this does not mean that mihawk does as well. Unless it is shown that a sword changes to a black blade due to conqueror's haki I don't think he might it. I feel like shanks has the greatest conqueror's haki in the series and mihawk has the greatest observation haki in the series and his name and portrail suggests. Due to unlocking conqueror's haki maybe might be the way for zoro to in the future surpass them both.
Don't get me wrong I think mihawk should have conqueror's cause of his title being the world's strongest swordsman. Shanks is Kaido's top 5 while mihawk is not and mihawk clearly became famous before shanks and during the great pirate era so there is no way Kaido doesn't know of mihawk's existence yet he is not in the top 5 of Kaido. Shanks is the person alive in his top 5 btw, the rest are rolling their graves. Which is in otherwords the same as saying "the only one who should be able TO fight me rn is Shanks" that Sbs also said shanks was a yonko was yonko in Luffy which is obviously false as by the time Luffy was ready to set sail and form his crew shanks would of only been a yonko for 4 years. Mihawk has never even once shown a named attack at all.. he literally cut an ungodly massive frozen tsunami that was bigger than an island with total ease, with nothing more than a simple average swing of his sword.. not even with a named attack whatsoever! Just a simple average normal sword swing. That was enough to cut that giant frozen tsunami entirely, like it was nothing. That’s pretty damn impressive! Mihawk could quite possibly very well be the most offensively powerful & deadliest character in the series as of current. I mean think about it.. Zoro was able to give Kaido a pretty deep scar & wound, even after he was already completely trashed/beaten to shit & not a full power etc.. & Also Oden being able to almost beat him as a swordsman too.. So if Zoro & Oden both could do that to Kaido.. then… well… doesn’t it logically stand to reason that Mihawk would most certainly & undoubtedly be able to cut Kaido down in a 1v1 battle between the two?? In terms of swordmanship currently it is mihawk, in overall combat it is Shanks in my opinion. I think that mihawk became the strongest swordman either by beating shanks in a duel or when shanks lost his arm and made mihawk the strongest by default. Mihawk could be in the Yonko level but the problem he has no leadership status and no crew. The reason why Shanks became one is with his leadership, charisma, skills and talent. Whitebeard respects Mihawk and talks about him to Shanks if he is the one who cut his arm.
