Luffy has been put to the test by many powerful people throughout the story. Crocodile, Doflamingo, Rob Lucci, Katakuri, the list goes on. Even though Luffy has been on the BRINK many times... is it possible that he can be seen as "Overpowered"? This video is my attempt to answering that question.

I know, that's why Luffy is stronger than the veteran Katakuri in my eyes since Luffy power is just absurd for a 19 year old.

He's not even close to his prime and he's already defeated CP9 agents, Shichibukai and Yonko Commanders. By EOS he has surpassed Yonko decades before he even reaches his prime. I could see Prime Luffy being country-level DC, the way things are headed.
Tbf so were the current top tiers. Big Mom killed one of the leaders of the giants at around 5 years old. She probably had a similar trajectory to what Luffy is having now to become a Yonko. Shanks, Kaido, Whitebeard etc all probably had similar trajectories as well. Luffy will surpass them all eventually of course, and he's still OP when compared to those of a similar age to him, but i don't think he's OP by the standards of the One Piece world, he's just followng that same trajectory. The problem with Luffy's power imo isn't Luffy himself, it's that Oda hasn't made anyone else in his age group just as strong. Linlin and Kaido, for example, were part of the same generation. Luffy doesn't have anyone like that. It would make Luffy feel a lot less OP if there were at least one other person on his tier from his gen.

I have to make a correction King. Zoro in Punk Hazard telling Luffy to be serious is not solely because of Luffy. He says it because he himself also lost to the Yeti Cool Bros. It was as much a scolding to himself as it was to Luffy.

Zoro didn't "lose." His speech was SPECIFICALLY about how he and Luffy let their guard down during Punk Hazard, letting their enemies catch them off-guard. No way Luffy or Zoro would've been knocked out if they weren't being careless. That's the point he was making.

Luffy is pretty young, but don't forget about what Linlin, a top tier of the OP world, did at 5. She legit killed a giant. Not just any giant, but one of their leaders and assumingly one of their strongest. None of them could stop her rampage on Elbaf. At age 5. Or thereabouts anyway, she was a kid is my point. I'm sure other top tiers like Kaido, Shanks etc. have similar feats. So Luffy is just kinda following in their footsteps by being a monster at a young age. He's OP when compared to his age grup, but not when it comes to the whole world of OP (at least, not yet anyways, that'll change when we reach the end but still).

Well of course. Luffy, thematically, has always been portrayed as a sort of chosen one. Being saved at Loguetown by lightning ex machina (most likely by Dragon but it’s still portrayed as a sort of divine intervention). Being immune to Enel’s powers, making him god’s natural enemy. Having conqueror’s haki. His uncanny similarities to Roger including but not limited to hearing the voice of all things. The D in his name. Yes, Zoro, Sanji, Law and Kid have all been portrayed as capable, but in the end, everyone bets on Luffy. Gear 4th didn’t make Luffy overpowered. Luffy’s always been overpowered and Oda’s never been shy about showing it.

Luffy isn't a freak of nature like the top-tiers in the verse, but he grows at 2x their speed. Blackbeard is a 40 year old Yonko and Luffy will be able to-hopefully- fight him in a 1v1 at age 19 (possibly 20)

@@johnlaceda6542, I'd say it's believable since Luffy started his journey at 17. Before the timeskip, almost a year could have passed. Meaning Luffy was almost 18, and two years after that he'd be almost 20 when they met again.

This is the main problem I have with One Piece (and most Shonens in general).
Luffy will manage to do in 4-5 years at max what the most legendary people in One Piece did in 20-30 years, and even more.
I know man. My man Roger had to find lodestar and then travel around the world a second time. It took him a long time and he was unfortunate to be diseased. Luffy is out here going to give Ls to people with over 40 years experience than him.
kinda makes sense though in this case though. Roger had to search the whole seas himself and get stronger himself. he also had to backtrack a great deal upon getting oden.
Luffy is getting everything handed to him. he got a crewmate that can read poneglyphs off the jump and has been trained by someone whos literally seen it all. 19 may be a bit too young but it makes sense luffy is as strong as he is

Facts. It’s pretty stupid when you think about it. For all the supposed “hard work” of these main characters they break the world in 6 or 7 years while most people need at least 20 years of grueling work experience training loss etc to do anything. Don’t make no sense except it’s a power fantasy... it doesn’t have to make sense and people just eat it up and power scale all the live long day
I dont mind the 4 years part, but with pretty much every shonen i wish they had the nerve to make their protagonist older, as Oda should have done with Luffy

It's hard to say. Luffy trained with Rayleigh at a young age and had his devil fruit damn near his whole life. Did any other pirates or admiral have that advantage. How fast or how slow was each of theirs progression when it comes to power.

Luffy may have progressed a liitttlle bit too quickly but considering how much has happened since the timeskip I would say that a better criticism would be that Law, Zoro, Sanji and peers are UNDERpowered. We need to see these people go all out and progress. Like hell the entire reason some people scale Zoro > Luffy is precisely because we have not seen him fight properly - which is crazy
Garp trained him as a "super soldier" from little before training with Ace and Sabo so being able to pnch through steel and stone at the start of his adventure and self advance in new techniques with minimum guidance is not that unusual
I wouldn't say his peers are underpowered, it's just that Luffy has gotten more opportunities to grow. I mean he'll be fighting Yonkos in his early 20s, if we scale all the other supernovas up to him, we'd have 11(12 if you add Blackbeard) 20 year old Yonko level fighters running around. I'm pretty sure Luffy's peers are progressing at a regular rate, it's just that Luffy's growing exponentially due to insane amount zenkai boost like power ups he's gotten post time-skip in comparison to his peers.
Not really, there are very few people in the tier Luffy has to reach eos. Roger, WB, Rocks, maybe Sengoku and Akainu, Dragon, Maybe Imu and eos BB. We don't need "Luffys peers" be on his level, in fact it would be weird if more than say BB and maybe 1 more like Kid or maybe Sabo (if he indeed fights Akainu) were, Luffy will have about as many 'equals' as Roger. And Ray and Scopper were not Roger's equals, neither will Zoro or Sanji

Overpowered with plenty of power ups yet to come. We know 3 that are guaranteed, Perfecting Gear 4th, Mastering Haki, and Awakening. Then you got the theory power ups like Gear 5th, Special D Clan Ability, and so on.

Really good breakdown. But you mentioned a key point. That luffytaro was trained by Raleigh-san and i believe we still haven't seen all the aspects to that training as yet

It's like Luffy kinda has the mindset that he cant afford to die, we've seen badass moments from Luffy in the past and we'll see more in the future but Red leg Zeff did say that guys like Luffy arent afraid of death when they fight.
Luffy said himself in episode 1, he doesn't care if he dies as long as he does it fighting for his dreams
luffy won't die. he doesn't die in the most bullshit way. ofc you can defeat your opponents when your allowed to try over and over again. in any other anime luffys opponents would've finished him. he gets stronger cause he can't die due to plot. he defeats his opponents due to not dying and allowed to get back up. he wins and survives off plot itself.
Luffy is by far stronger then all the supernovas in one piece, it's going to be hard to accept kid, law and the rest of the supernovas to be his equal with out showing us the readers how they got that stronger.

Haven’t you noticed already? Oda does not “show” how characters progress, they just get stronger because the plot requires them to, which is poor writing.
I argue Kidd isn’t a slouch because he went against Shank’s crew offscreen and survived. That’s a power up in my book.

You have an extremely powerful captain, then you have guys like the sweet commanders, the three calamities, or whitebeard’s division commanders. So is Luffy overpowered, or is he just taking the position of extremely powerful captain while having very powerful people underneath?

I mean, I find that it's only natural though. I think for a while, Oda has been building up Luffy to be someone who will stand atop his generations. While people like Kidd, Law, maybe even Koby will get to the the same level as Roger, Whitebeard and Garp, but Luffy will surpass that level, as stated by Don Chinjao. I don't think anyone will be on the same level as EOS Luffy like Whitebeard and Garp was to Roger. They'll be close no doubt, very close, but not truly on par with him.
But I could be wrong, Oda's fairly unpredictable so...

Ashuras is definitely a transformable state, just because we haven't seen zoro use it often doesnt mean its not a state, weve seen zoro use multiple attack while in ashura. And honestly im willing to call devils leg a state as well, it persist even after sanji attacks with it a few times instead of it jsut being 1 attack.

i feel like zoro is being under estimated. he still has a power up coming where he has to turn his first legendary blade into a black blade and also he was told that he doesn't know how to use the blade he got from the ghost samurai to it's full potential. it also hint's that his master was someone who left wano a long time ago as well

How broken was Roger’s haki if he didn’t have a DF and evenly matched WB?
Yea I'm assuming he had the 3 types like luffy but had them mastered. The observation keeps him able to dodge and attack perfectly. Armorment keeps him protected and allows him to hit logias, and we still do not know the extent of kings haki. But we do know it knocks out the weak and that there is more to it. So if he had all three mastered or mostly mastered he would have been the goat. The haki power system is really like the full circle of combat. Attack, defense, and prediction. Knowing the moves before they are made mixed with perfect defense and offense is the total package. We do not know how good Roger's abilities were but we know he was the king. So I'm guessing they were either master of all of them or master of a couple types and 3/4 of the other or something like that. I wouldn't be surprised though if he had all three mastered. I just hope oda finishes this out as well as he has been. As we saw with naruto and bleach it is easy to have a cool story. But ending it well is harder to do. Game of thrones series as well. I do not want to see it end with aliens unless it fits somehow. Or end with this all being a dream of some super advanced robot or whatever out of left field thing it could be. There is obviously something crazy we are gonna learn about the void century and the moons may play a part since they have loads of hints and references about them. And the celestial dragons are wearing space suits so there will be something space related. Just hope it flows well when it all comes out and we finally see the truth of the story.
DemonFox369 It wasn’t broken in contrast to the top tier. His advanced armament haki evenly matched with Whitebeard’s own advanced armament haki.
gimiked Why do you assume that he would the only to have mastered all three haki. I’m pretty sure The Admirals and Yonko have also mastered it. He isn’t the goat for that.

I disagree about Kaku and Jabra. Zoans increase your base strength also so Kaku would have widened the gap. I’ll give you Jabra being more skilled with his devil fruit though but Kaku was more skilled outside his devil fruit.

Only thing I wanna add is 6:46 this is the doriki measured BEFORE kaku had eaten a devil fruit, so it's safe to assume that his power level is decently higher than it's initially recorded.

Luffy is essentially in the "Goku phase" of his development in powers.
Whereas Luffy sets the bar in strength the rest of the fighting cast work to catch up, Luffy is off training somewhere and becomes even stronger than that. So the power gap will be continually widening.

@@aidanh7527 I dunno, I guess he could be, no one ever seems to know what goes through Oda's head, but it just doesn't make sense to me for Zoro to be Yonko level EOS, he'll likely be close, probably stronger than most of the admirals right now, but I personally doubt full blown Yonko level.

Against the octopus with Hody, he wrecked him, and even cut his many swords in half and from the base, while also knocking him out.
Cesar did "defeat" everybody but I see that as a technicism, he literally chocked them all by removing the oxygen of their lungs and suroundings (OP ability by the way), but then Monet was another breeze.
The fight with Pica took a while, but the whole fight was zoro cutting him into smaller and smaller chunks trying to force him to show his true body, which he did pretty much oneshot.

Yeah and people talking about hawkins hurting zoro and acting like it means zoro is weaker than him is really just not true. It mainky had to do with zoro not understanding what Hawkins devil fruit ability was and how it worked. Hawkins entire ability has to do with sacrificing others to save himself. Essentially zoro killed Hawkins multiple times but he shifted it onto his straw dummies. Had zoro understood this there is really nothing stopping zoro from exhausting all his dummies and pretty much one shotting a no longer protected hawkins.
