460 Ford Main Bearings & the Secret to Ford's Sucess for the 1958 Ford Fairlane Budget Build!

  • Preparing for the 460 Big Block Ford Swap in that 1958 Ford Fairlane Club Sedan so I flipped it over to check the Rod & Main Bearings for signs of wear (copper) and tear. While I was in here, I seen something from these 385 series Ford Big Blocks (429-460ci) that made me think back to the old Y-Blocks that replaced the Flat Head V8's that made Ford famous. You can see here the VAST improvements they have made in their oiling system for the Crank and really explains Fords Legendary Durability in their bottom ends, even if they are abused or neglected. These 429's & 460's (385 series big blocks) are some of the hardest engines out there to Kill, and I believe this is a HUGE part in all that, or a prime example of "learning from their mistakes" from the past.
    I hope that helps someone out there and it's one more step toward getting this 1977 #BigBlockFord 460 (7.5L) from that old Motorhome swapped into this 1958 Ford Fairlane for the #NoNameNationals this coming Sept 30th & Oct 1st.

    I acquired a 429 4v from a 69 Galaxie 500XL in 1988, it had only just been taken off the road, still running. Only two things wrong in it. First, valve stem oil seals had hardened and broken, the bits plugged up the oil pickup so the bearings were down to the copper. The crank was fine so we just put new shells in. Second, one of the pistons had a skirt starting to collapse with cracks either side. I believe the previous owner had tried to see how far he could rev the motor which might explain that. I replaced the piston, fitted new rings, new roller chain & peppier cam. It sat on an engine stand for years (long story), eventually it went in my 72 Mach1 where it was a hoot to drive.

    Great video and I am really learning about the internals on these 460's! Growing up in the 70's, our neighbor and his family went with us to the Colorado River and houseboating to Mead, Shasta and Lake Powell. It was always a big caravan! He had a '76 Ford Ranger with a 460 and a '76 Cheetah Daycruiser with a 460 and a Berkeley Jet. I water ski'd every summer behind that boat and my Dad and I helped him work on it if it had problems. He was a die hard Ford Guy and now I see what he saw in those 460's! Thanks for sharing this with a Small Block Chevy guy like myself! It is neat to finally learn about them!

    • @BareRoseGarage
      @BareRoseGarage  2 роки тому +2

      That is Way Cool! That 1951 Chevy we did with the zoomies? That's out of a Daycruiser as well! And about the same year! Those 460 Berkeley's are actually an animal to themselves! The block is pretty much the same, but they came with ported DOVE-C heads and their own Intake manifolds with HUGE runner in them! Funny story about that boat, dad bought it for a song because they couldn't get it running. He got it home and noticed it had an Automotive starter on it. The Berkley's turn clockwise (normal) but the starter is mounted on the back side instead of the front side of the flywheel, so they take a special order (ultra-expensive) high torque - reverse rotation - starter. The cheap Automotive starter they had put on it was turning the motor backwards so it wouldn't fire.... lol. Put a marine starter on it, and it fired right up.... lol. Later when he decided to build the Monster Truck (from the pile of junk Monster Truck) he had bought, that was the engine he used to power it. When we sold the truck.... it had the Built Ford 460 in it, and we kept the Berkeley 460 to build that Rat Rod with.

    The 460 Ford is a well thought out engine design, the 385 Series.
    The little hole off the main bore lubes the cam bearings.
    The large diameter mains support the crank well.
    There is alot of rigidity in the block and crankshaft.
    When a bearing shows copper does not mean it is bad.
    The copper over plate is designed to wear if there is a tight spot.
    Thus creating a perfect alinement.
    Your engine looks nice from what we can see on this side of the camera.
    You're giving people good information.
    Great content.
    Thank you, Ed.

      @BareRoseGarage  2 роки тому +1

      Thanks a Million for that Ed! coming from you that really means a lot! man it's hard to get that all in there in under 10mins. When I popped her open and was digging around in it, I found some big hard chunks of carbon, and decided to set my mind at ease by cleaning out all the oil passages in the crank and just go completely through it. Those 3,200 miles are really in the back of my head on this build... lol. If this was just a driver for around here..... I probably would've just painted it and drove the bugs out of it around here lol.

      It's really cool to see the final evolution in it all with these 385 Series, esp when you go way back and open up a Y-block or an FE block. Took them a while to nail it, but you can definitely see why it's almost over-kill.... IDK, pretty dog gone cool. lol.

    That motor looks fresh. Should be a good runner. Was just wondering what your running for ignition? Personal I always had great luck with the factory duraspark distributor and box. I have had a lot of old Fords and the ignition never let me down. Unlike the ignition modules in a GM hei and tbi trucks. Some may differ but that's my experience. I would guess your motor will be around a honest 310h.p. 420ftlbs. It will move that light car well and run like a swiss watch.

    • @BareRoseGarage
      @BareRoseGarage  2 роки тому +1

      Going back and forth on it actually. I have the "spark box" set up still, but I'm leaning toward the '69 Points distributor. Up there the hood clearance gets even tighter, and the Spark Box cap is actually a tad shorter, so it might go with that. Funny..... this is the ONLY car I've owned that cutting the hood isn't an option on... lol. Kinda like the build you are doing, I'm banking on the Torque Numbers to get her out of the hole and hoping she has the pony's to carry it the 8th. It's going to be fun no matter what lol.

    good night friend, I have a 460 and I have not been able to correct the oil bottle due to the rear seal, I knocked over the crankshaft but it lasts a single day without throwing, then as the days go by it gets to throw 2 liters of oil daily, I cannot correct the bottle of oil, use original felpro brand

    • @BareRoseGarage
      @BareRoseGarage  Рік тому

      Definitely sounds like the rear main is slinging it out. Make sure that the seal is installed the right way. The spring side of the seal goes toward the oil (like a dam) or it will let the oil pass right on by. Also if you are using the cork style gaskets (pre 1996 style) synthetic oil will pass through those. It's best to use the premium 1 piece (rubber type) gaskets with synthetic & synthetic blends.
      Hope that helps.

  • @mattthescrapwhisperer

    I had external oil lines on my old 292 Y block so the rockers would get oiled. I think part of the problem was the old paraffin based oils that were used back then....

    • @BareRoseGarage
      @BareRoseGarage  2 роки тому +1

      yeah, they used to sell a kit that would lay down in the valley like a sprinkler system to oil the cam, lifters, distributor, & timing chain. It also came with the Rocker Shaft Plugs to pressurize the rockers to get oil on the rockers. It really helped them but by that time Ford pulled the plug on them in favor of fixing the "oops" in the FE design that put too much in all that and starved the bottom end.... lol. Then you couple all that with no PCV system & non detergent oils and it just made a mess of things.... lol.

  • @lynnrunningdeer7364
