Hi Ariel...tip I read about lentils...you can google it...is to add salt after the lentils are soft...salt makes the skins tough and longer cooking time. Lentils are probably the best thing a person could eat. Love them!
Looks totally YUM! I love lentils and have a variety of colors. I think I will try your recipe with my orange lentils. I sure do miss your videos Ariel.
HI ARIEL.. Funny thing at 57 I only tried to fix lentils ONCE.. We was first married in 1980. It was in November. I tried fixing them on the wood stove like I always fixed pinto beans. Yep I burnt them to pieces. Not enough water added.. I always start my pinto with garlic & onion too. Funny I have memory loss but I remembered this.. LOL I think it's about time Grammy could try these again.. Thanks Sweetie..
Russ Turner - When I have anything with sausage, that thing becomes a special treat. I rarely buy sausage. Add fat and salt to anything and life is suddenly alright.
I made this for myself and fiancé a few dinners ago and gotta say we absolutely loved this recipe ! Your definitely our muse when it comes to our own tiny house adventure !!! Thanks :)
Ariel! A soup I would never have imagined, yet looks delicious! The cumin I bet gives it a lovely flavor. I hope to try this soon. Thank you for the inspiration.
I was thinking the same thing. I almost always add coriander,& sometimes a bit of nutmeg whenever I use cumin, so might try to let it stand alone for a change. The 1st time I'd ever used cumin was in an excellent recipe for Papas Chorreadas , in the Romagnogis Cookbook.
Soup's a cold weather warmer! TIPS: With spring here I came in from working outside and had soup as a re-hydration. It works! In the summer it will be beer! No, not beer soup. Just beer! Elk & beer sounds like a good summer grill. I just can't get elk. So I'm grilling beef.
Everything you make looks so good! And healthy to boot. I know that being healthy can become quite the unhealthy obsession for some people, however the way you cook seems so effortless. It's actually inspired me to start cooking more and making up some of my own recipes. Just goes to show that good ingredients leave us guilt-free and feeling good!
Wonderful! I'm not the best cook in the world or anything, but if I can inspire others to cook more of their own food and get involved in taking care of their health, that is perfect!
@@FyNyth I know I will enjoy the taste as well as feeling good, knowing it will all be helping me to fight my battle with Cancer. I am trying to adapt to healthier foods these days, Thanks so much !!!
Thank you for that recipe Ariel ! I'm vegetarian so I would add vegetarian sausage or none, but I really appreciate all the ideas this video gives :) and i LOVE garlic. Have a nice day, hoping it's getting warmer and sunnier by your house !
Hi Ariel, awesome soup, I followed what you did the best I can, and I must say, that was goooooood 😂lol I never had lentyl soup before, I loved it. I find my self doing recipes my mom would make, she's passed away, but my siblings love when I do make a recipe of hers. Thanks Ariel. Trying to eat more nutritious now a days, it's good thing. 😁🙋
Love how you make your lentil soup with all the added ingredients to make it nutritious and extra yummy. Can’t wait to try it that way! Really like your cooking videos.
This video inspired me to make a lentil soup last weekend. It was fantastic. I love how flexible your cooking is. I've been far too reliant on written recipes and get bogged down. Thank you for encouraging exploration and being creative in the kitchen.
I have not had much luck with lentils because I tend to overlook them and not have enough broth. This video is very much appreciated! I’m going to try again!

I actually need to make more of my own soups, mainly to have better control on the amount of sodium. That soup looks mighty good. Today is not a good soup day for me with the temp going to 85F here in PA ..... crazy crazy spring! Take care.... edited for spelling ~8^)
Sushiyrolls - Good one. I stumbled across a YT guy who gathers herbs, edible flowers and wild mushrooms in the woods. He even dries them in his cabin without a dehydrator. I'd certainly kill myself if tasked to gather safe wild anything for consumption. Sad. There is one in Japan who lives in the mountains collecting mushrooms and bamboo, both for consumption. The latter takes years of training, because the bamboo is not visible to the untrained eye. He posts on Fb if you're curious.
thanks! I will check it out. Speaking of Japan... I am actually 100% Japanese living in US. I grew up in the area of some bamboo forest where people went bamboo shoot digging. I was too young to go along and learn the secrets, but you can still dig a young one ( and see if you like it. Very young one which is still covered with soil is, I heard/read that good eating raw with wasabi soy!. I have small bamboo bush with skinny kinds of bamboo which I can just snap it and peel the shells and throw in a soup.
Some. I'd love to know even more about some things. As stuff start to grow here I do usually pick dandelions, nettles, mushrooms, various berries, etc. I don't personally fish, but have friends that do and do enjoy a good fresh trout or whitefish every now and then.
Would like to make a version of this today. Don't have any bone broth, which I'd like to try, the way you make it. I had no idea the bones could soften if cooked as long as you do! I'm still amazed. That way you'd even get at the marrow, so will turn to an inferior choice, but still good to have on hand - a low sodium chicken bouillon cube. Don't have any meat, so will rely on the veggies I do have. I've been noticing that you don't tend to use the lid on your pots when simmering, & know you're well attuned to efficiency in all you do. It's a great way to save time & whatever your energy source is. My electric bills tend to be very low. Since many of my appliances have crapped out after a long life of service, I've been adapting to doing more by hand, rather than replacing them, but still, rates are going up & I really want to get solar, more than ever now - at least to set up a solar water heater. I've never used propane in the home, but know many in RVs & Tiny Houses do. So, with that in mind, by allowing the heat to be retained with the lid, rather than allowing it to be dissipated out, a covered pot on the stove can still bring the contents up to a decent simmer quickly - so I often continue on the lower settings. The steam effectively cooks items through to the centers even at low settings. It's especially useful when adding in large blocks of frozen ingredients like I've seen you do & which I too have done. Of course, if possible, they're best defrosted 1st, which doesn't tale long, & does use less energy So glad to find you making this today. Haven't been to the market in about 10, or11 days, so felt like I had nothing to make for a dinner recipe. I no longer have a car, so am putting together a list to order from "Peapod" through Stop 'n Shop. It takes a couple days for the delivery to arrive. Sure I could order a delivery from a few local restaurants to tide me over, but I'd prefer this, actually! There are some canned soups in the shelves, but you made me realize I could still put together another dinner without going to the store 1st. One of the things I like about soups with legumes - is that they're so satisfying. I know I have some red lentils, leftover from an earlier use, but might prefer the basic brown ones, if I have any left. I do have a couple lemons, but had hoped to use them in a vinaigrette for a salad, but have used up the salad greens. I do love it in tea, or beer but have no beer. Think I'll put cut lemon sections in a bowl on the table, to be added to the bowls as desired, so it has a fresh impact. Since I'm eating less bread, having a bowl of sliced lemons on the table might help make the table appear to offer abundance - so maybe the lack of bread won't seem glaringly absent. Not everyone likes lemon or lime as much as I do, anyway. If used at the end, it has so much more impact, so we might need to use less. It might help some use less salt, to try a splash of fresh citrus juice instead. Luckily, I have one more head of fresh garlic, & like you - prefer tasting the garlic. You'd mentioned - in this cooking vid or another one, that some have written you about you using so much garlic, but I think those large cloves you like using are called "Elephant garlic," which is a much more gentle type flavor than the standard garlic heads, commonly sold in most grocery stores. Often it's presence can be there without it seeming overt, as the cooking process blunts the flavor impact anyway. It's still there, adding substance & nutrients to the recipe, even if not obvious. Another thing I like about soups - it's a way to use up partially used veggies - which would spoil & got o waste otherwise. I can add some recently cut 2/3 remainder of a red onion, & the remaining smaller 1/2 of a green cabbage. I could spare 2, maybe, 3 red potatoes from a new bag & still have plenty for garlic smashed potatoes as a side for another dinner, later in the week. I might add a whole carrot to this lentil / potato / cabbage soup - either grated or cut into small, irregular, angular pieces. Since I have no meat, I think these ingredients would be complimented by adding butter, olive oil or... a bit of coconut maybe?
Cheryl Anderson I always suspected that she leaves the cover sitting on the stove while filming because cameras have a very hard time seeing through stainless steel. :-D
Well, it did occur to me that while recording, since camera mics can pick up the tiniest of sounds, carelessly slamming a metal pot lid onto the counter, then back onto the pot several times... after each check for stages of defrosting, with each addition or tasting, then back on to the pot to bring up the temp to & then maintain a decent simmer, could certainly create a string of harsh, distracting sounds, particularly annoying to those using headphones, lol. However, I suspect Ariel has another reason for not using a pot lid & leaving the spoon standing in the pot while cooking. Yes - I'd also noticed the stirring spoon often left standing in the pot, presumably so it's at the ready. But - now we have 2 gestures which may have something in common. So ... my spidey senses tell me - there may be another, perfectly good reason for doing these things, since Ariel does seem to appreciate thinking things through. Please Ariel... & loyal fans, keep in mind - my spidey senses work only for good, so no requests for lottery #s ... Like me - many enjoy finding ways to use less water. Having to lug heavy water jugs to the home from who knows how far away would certainly be clear motivation towards water conservation. To use the lid would mean one more item to wash. Also, taking the spoon in & out of the pot would invite drips on the counter, & would also necessitate using a saucer to rest the drippy spoon. So... Aha! These gestures are likely deliberate - in order to conserve water & the time it takes to wash these things.
Yeah I do use lids regularly for keeping things at a simmer, but as John noted, it's hard to see through them. Plus in the winter with the very dry air from wood heat, some extra tasty smelling steam added to the house is quite nice. My stove only uses a tiny bit of propane anyway and no electricity so that's not a big deal for me.
Ariel. A few days ago you gave me a thumbs up, and a heart for my comment. Basically I hope that you find a nice guy that has the same interests and values. And I said you'd make some nice guy an awesome wife. Please don't take this the wrong way. It was meant as a honest opinion and compliment to you. Anyway, I'm half Cherokee Indian, and the other side is of German and Irish ancestry. I literally grew up on lentils, they are awesome. They're an excellent source of iron and an excellent source of protein. If you have a Gmail account, I'd love to send you my Grandma's lentil recipe, as well as my chilli recipe, and my chicken casserole recipe. I make my lentil recipe in a crockpot, mom and grandma did theirs in big stock pots. P.S. Onions and garlic are absolutely no brainers, the more the better to an extent. I don't know what the environment for growing tomatoes is in Wyoming, but it's probably a shorter season than southwestern Pa. I live in a very tiny town in southwestern Pa called Dawson. It's actually not even classified as a town, it's a borough. It's small. Anyway, if you have a Gmail account cool. Mine is; Dawsonringneck2017@gmail.com No spaces. I'll give you three of my best recipes that my my friends bug me to make all the time for pot luck at work. Nothing spicy, just stick to your ribs delicious. Put it this way, 16 people, 7 quarts of chilli, gone in less than 15 minutes. And sadly, they ask why I don't make two 7 quart crockpots of chilli. Very, very thick and hearty, You and your family will love it. Sorry about rambling on, I'm a foodie and a country boy. I love to cook and I love to eat good homecooked meals. I'm 49 years old, my fiance was murdered, and I have no children. My interest in women died with Rhonna, and my kids as I call them are our 4 cats. I can share my recipes with you here, or through gmail. If I share them with you on gmail, You can then surprise your subscribers and new viewers on UA-cam. As far as the bean ingredient in my chilli recipe, it isn't kidney beans, or black beans. If you find this post strange or of a nature that makes you feel uncomfortable, let me know in a response. I'd happily post it here for you, but it won't be a surprise to your subscribers. They might spoil it for you in a way if they make it before you do. Ariel, do you, or have you ever made German potato soup? Grandma always made hers with potatoes, onions, celery, ham chunks, and homemade noodles with parsley.
Sounds yummy! My email is under the "about" tab on the channel homepage. Be aware I get so many emails that I'm months behind on replying to everyone. :) Yes I have made German potato soup, but with beef not ham as my family never ate pork.
Ariel, I am very sorry but shame on you girl, for sharing your wonderful video at this hour of night, you made me so hungry watching you fixing all that good stuff, that I had to go fix me a midnight meal just to make it though. This happens every time I watch you fixing up such a wonderful meals. Thank you for sharing another wonderful video with the rest of us. dd
So true. This time I'd already eaten, albeit a couple hours prior. Good thing watching her split wood when I woke up in the wee hrs, didn't have the same effect on me!
Thank you for your kind response, I had already eaten a few hours prior, and I was ready to hit the sack when Ariel posted her video and darn it, I just got so hungry watching Ariel prepare her lentil soup that I decided it was time for another meal at midnight my time, LOL, like you mention, watching Ariel split wood didn't have the same effect on me either because spring/summer has I hope finally has arrived in the northern CA high sand pit desert and not much need to cut and chop wood now, but that can change overnight to, but not like what Ariel goes through in WY. dd
Ha ha, nope, no need to get inspired splitting firewood in the middle of the night since springtime has finally arrived in the sand pit and the temp's is in the 80's now lol.
THE DISH LOOKS DELISH. I don't think I've ever said so, but I love the Celtic intro music and you certainly look like a Celtic lass with hints of red in your golden hair and rosy skin. Bet you'd enjoy living in the Celtic (Ireland or Scotland) countryside. I can imagine you raising sheep for wool, sheering them and even spinning wool. Is my imagination to rich? I think the life gets busy, but in a good way. I suspect if you're not trying to get rich, raising wool sheep is an idyllic life. (I'm all about keeping things small in scale).
SORRY THIS ONE IS LONGER THAN USUAL - FOOD FOR THOUGHT Would you consider fermenting certain veggies, like greens? Then you don't have to refrigerate and you could store it outside in picturesque wood barrels (as they do in S. Korea with bean paste and KimchI). I believe barrels come in smaller sizes than what we typically see, then you could jar whatever you want for your pantry for quick access. You might need some type of outbuilding if it generates a smell, so as not to attract bears or any critters that would overturn the barrels to get at the food. I am eager to see what you do at your property. You could put another tiny house there and rent it as a B&B, even lease some land to another (well-screened) tiny house homeowner. Blessed are the meek. They shall inherit the earth. God I hope that one day that comes to pass - one day.
I feel my recipe is very minimalistic in comparison : red lentils, water of course, salt and tomato puree. Stabmixer to make it liquid. Yes, I am lazy and I live small :)
Limes/lemons may be a little strong for me? Does it have a strong lime taste or do the limes really balance the flavors? I've tried limes on fish once because I didn't have lemons and really didn't like it. I really don't drink...but in past have enjoyed limes in a beer occasionally. Key lime pie is good...but I think a different lime??? Lemon and water is great! Lemon cake glaze too...just sugary! 😀
Mike Woods - Just an idea, If you like the flavors, but not the strength, use much less. You can always add more later. Instead of pouring it on, sprinkle it to control the flow.
I don't find it to have a strong lime taste, just a bit of "brightness" to the flavor. I do often use lemon instead, but you could leave both out if you prefer as well.
That's very kind of you! I've done a lot of different things over time. Milked cows, cleaned office buildings, worked in a bedding plant greenhouse, raised dogs, picked strawberries, infant day care, wilderness therapy with teen boys, youth crisis shelter, waitressing, and some more I'm probably forgetting. At the moment, gardening assistance, house cleaning, photography, and property care taking. The easiest way to support those is probably through photography if you're into that. arielcelestephotography.zenfolio.com Or there's this from the bottom of the info on the videos. "If you really value the info you find on my channel, are very comfortable yourself, and want to help out with things here, there are two ways to do so that are a huge help to me! My Paypal account address is Ariel.C.McGlothin@gmail.com And I keep a running wish list of things I could use around here at a.co/aSEscEa ."
Ariel , your videos are great! Please consider writing a cookbook with your videos referenced with each corresponding recipe. I would love to buy two copies, one for my house and one for my vacation rental cabin for guests to use. CreateSpace with Amazon is a good place to self publish on demand so they do not even print a copy until someone buys it. :-)
Thanks! I don't know that my cooking style transfers onto paper well. Hence the videos so people can see what I'm doing when I say "dump a little in" etc. :)
Good job Ariel, you do have wonderful recipes. You give us things that are good for you to eat and enjoy. Thank you so much.

Like!
Mine is;

Great soup. Wish I had elk here to make bone broth. Stay beautiful!
I make lots of broth from chicken and turkey bones as well. Or beef though with all the elk, I rarely have much beef around.
I'd have to try it with Barley instead of Lentils but it looks yummy :-)
That would be good I'm sure. I have another recipe with lentils and barley that I like as well. It's more tomato based than this one.
Love Tomatoes :-)
I didn’t realize you could freeze raw greens. Where do you store all the frozen food?
I keep a chest freezer in my neighbors shop so I can store quite a bit of frozen food.
Thank you for your kind response, I had already eaten a few hours prior, and I was ready to hit the sack when Ariel posted her video and darn it, I just got so hungry watching Ariel prepare her lentil soup that I decided it was time for another meal at midnight my time, LOL, like you mention, watching Ariel split wood didn't have the same effect on me either because spring/summer has I hope finally has arrived in the northern CA high sand pit desert and not much need to cut and chop wood now, but that can change overnight to, but not like what Ariel goes through in WY. dd
Ha ha. No one was inspired to get up and split firewood in the middle of the night? ;)
Ha ha, nope, no need to get inspired splitting firewood in the middle of the night since springtime has finally arrived in the sand pit and the temp's is in the 80's now lol.
So glad it’s warm enough now that I don’t have to go for late night wood runs and kindling!
SORRY THIS ONE IS LONGER THAN USUAL - FOOD FOR THOUGHT
Would you consider fermenting certain veggies, like greens?
I love fermenting lots of veggies! I normally use several of the crocks I have and quart jars for smaller batches.
Looks good. What kind of lentils did you use?
I just used brown lentils this time, but I've used all kinds over the years. I like them all.
I feel my recipe is very minimalistic in comparison : red lentils, water of course, salt and tomato puree. Stabmixer to make it liquid. Yes, I am lazy and I live small :)
might have missed a video....does anyone know, why did grizzly leave ?

What kind of seeds do you use for sprouts?

Just curious... what do you do for a living? In case anyone wanted to support you?
That's very kind of you! I've done a lot of different things over time. Milked cows, cleaned office buildings, worked in a bedding plant greenhouse, raised dogs, picked strawberries, infant day care, wilderness therapy with teen boys, youth crisis shelter, waitressing, and some more I'm probably forgetting. At the moment, gardening assistance, house cleaning, photography, and property care taking. The easiest way to support those is probably through photography if you're into that. arielcelestephotography.zenfolio.com
Or there's this from the bottom of the info on the videos. "If you really value the info you find on my channel, are very comfortable yourself, and want to help out with things here, there are two ways to do so that are a huge help to me!
My Paypal account address is Ariel.C.McGlothin@gmail.com
And I keep a running wish list of things I could use around here at a.co/aSEscEa ."
do you have any problems with mice
I've never had one in the house though they do seem to like to invade my van. :)
:-)
