Since there are so many comments, I doubt anybody will see this, but if I can help just a single person, it'll be worth taking the time to do this. STARTING 2-3 WEEKS BEFORE YOUR SURGERY, begin practicing things you normally do with your soon-to-be unusable arm. For example, once you start driving again, if your left shoulder was the one repaired, you won't be able to use that arm to shut your car door after you get in. Think about that. My solution was to get my crow bar, rubber band a sock around the curved end so I don't scratch anything, and then use that with my right arm to grab the door handle to shut the door. Practice brushing your teeth with your other hand if your dominant arm will be the compromised one. Practice wiping with your other hand after going #2 if the hand you usually use is the one being disabled. Practice eating with your other hand - and see which foods are easy or hard to eat with one arm disabled. See what you can or cannot cook with one arm. Start using your computer mouse with your other hand. I could go on and on. What I did was dedicate an entire day where I basically kept my soon-to-be unusable arm behind my back and forced myself to use the other arm to see what I'd have trouble with, and then use the next 2-3 weeks to get used to using the other arm. Trust me on this, folks...you will thanks me a million times over. Good luck to you. Btw, I've had this surgery four times, so I know the drill. And one final piece of advice: your physical therapy is the only opportunity you have to control your own destiny in terms of the quality of your repair. You can have the best surgeon in the nation (mine certainly is one of them), but his or her work will be rendered useless if you don't work your ass off on the PT. The surgeon's success is largely determined by what you do at PT, not their ability.

I wish that I had seen this video before I went into surgery. I know this video has been done so many years ago but I just happen to be scrolling through to see if anybody was discussing this surgery. I’m on day8 cuff surgery, bicep tendon, two other ligaments, and then some cleanout stuff, I did not expect it to be this painful. I have had approximately 30 surgeries on this body, this one I feel is the worst. but I’m looking forward to better days. Great video by the way.

I had rotator cuff surgery (torn supraspinatus and subscapularis) with a subacrominal decompression and bicep tenodesis 10 days ago. I watched these videos before surgery to prepare. They were very helpful. I'm doing much better than I anticipated - pain meds for one day only, shower at day 3 (and daily after that), shopping on day 5 (yes I drove!!) and daily trips out since. The worst is not getting comfortable for sleeping (I do have a recliner) and the muscle spasms. I live alone so its a challenge!

I had right shoulder rotator cuff, labrum tear, bicep tenodisis ( relocate the bicep tendon ). Went through the standard recuperation, physical therapy. I got through it with a cold therapy machine and a passive movement chair. 32 physical therapy visits, which you MUST listen to the therapist for best results. It isn’t as bad as folks say it is. Sure it hurts, but all orthopedic bone work is painful but it does get better as long as doctor directions and the physical therapist work is followed.
Next week (18th) I’m having left shoulder done, and expect the same results. Don’t let your mind and fears cause anxiety for this procedure. Yes it hurts. Yes you are inconvenienced for awhile. But trust me, it does get better and it will heal as long as the protocols of the doctor and therapist.

@@dianamincher6479 I had two left shoulder rotator cuff surgery, on January 18 and October 18. Same surgeon and slightly better results. I did 14 PT session, and did a lot on my own at home. Pain and discomfort was the same, but it goes away eventually. Using an ice machine and regular cold packs, plus conservative pain medication I got through both just fine.
Don’t let those who are over sensitive to pain scare you away, moor make you nervous. All surgery hurts. Otheopedic surgery hurts, but it’s very manageable and goes away quickly.

Day 2: RC Surgery :Tip for ice machine the nurse told me. Freeze water bottles , 4 small ones fit in the machine and fill with water. It lasts longer and is more convenient ..just refreeze them after use. Also, at the stage Im at 48 hours out…the pain is at another level. Worse at night , and I could feel spasms from the injection site of the nerve block. Since I have had cervical surgery before the RC surgery…the procedure really triggered muscle spasms in my neck. Not fun , so I really appreciate hearing about your experience right now

I had my surgery on October 9, 2018 to repair my torn supraspinatus tendon, pinched bicep and bone spur in my right shoulder. Thanks Donna for sharing your story and I want to do the same to help others for what's it worth. My surgery was scheduled for the morning and I had the nerve block administered about an hour before my surgery. It was injected in my right shoulder and my complete right arm went to sleep within a few minutes. Feels like when you go to the Dentist and they numb your mouth, but it's your whole arm. Anesthesiologist also administered what she called a 'cocktail' via IV which to help calm me down and make me fall asleep before I go completely under for surgery. I remember being wheeled into the OR and I was awake for about 10 minutes and the next thing I remember I woke up coughing in the recovery room. Since I was under general anesthesia, they placed a tube down my throat, so my throat was a bit sore for about the first week, so keep cough drops and honey on hand to help soothe your throat. According to my surgeon the surgery was successful. After recovery, I went straight to the Pharmacy to get my pain med of Norco with Tylenol which I started taking later in the day to get ahead of the pain once the nerve block wore off. The nerve block lasted for about 18 hours and I slowly started to feel pain in my arm once it started to wear off.
I need to say that the pain was pretty rough for the next 24 hours even with the pain meds. Not much you can do but just grin and bear it. After the 2nd day, the pain became a bit more manageable. However, the WORST part of my whole ordeal was not being able to SLEEP for the first week. I literally could not sleep because I couldn't find any comfortable position to rest and sleep and I bounced between my recliners, 2 beds, chairs and in between. I was a walking zombie and I was more upset about not sleeping than the pain. It may have been the meds too but I just couldn't get to sleep. I tried Tylenol PM but it didn't help me. You might want to try Melatonin as well but discuss with your Doctor first. By the 2nd week, I started to sleep in small spurts of about 15 minutes to 1 hour. By the third week I was sleeping at longer stretches. I would recommend getting Arnicare cream as Donna suggested to help with the pain and bruising and using Ice packs to help with the pain and swelling. I'm grateful to my wife and daughter who took good care of me, so you will definitely need help the first week after surgery. My appetite was good and I didn't suffer any constipation but I found that my acid reflux was flaring up a bit.
I'm entering my 4th week. I went back to work at week 3 as I work in an office and sit at my desk and use a computer, which my surgeon said was fine to do as long as I don't try to lift my arm to the side, above the shoulder or behind my back. This week I start PT and that's where the real fun begins as I've heard that will be a painful process as they'll get to work to get mobility back in my arm/shoulder and then eventually strength training to help build my bicep muscle which needed to be detached from the shoulder bone and reattached with anchors. With all of the above, I'm feeling better little by little and pain has been getting less, but just have to be mindful of what you're doing and take care of not injuring yourself.
    Good luck and God bless!

I had rotator cuff repair with tetonomy as well; I had a 1 1/2 inch tear with some muscle atrophy as I fell about 5 years ago... I first watched your video prior to my surgery. thank you for doing this....incredibly helpful information. I also used the cold water therapy machine and love your idea of used frozen water bottles. the first few nights I woke up shivering and actually had to disconnect the machine. But I really believe it kept my pain levels low enough that I didn't need to use the pain meds as much as I was allowed. I am on track, if not ahead of schedule with healing. I do want to be careful as I am aware that there is still healing going on, and I need to strengthen the whole shoulder at this point, as well as my bicep. I do have a few years on you, so I have to take that into account as well. Again thank you for great information; it really helped. I 've never been so happy to get back into my bed. :-)

I had the same and the biceps tendon was almost ripped through as well so that had to be repaired. When my neural block were off yesterday morning the day after surgery, the pain was so intense I could hardly stand it. I was warned about a long recovery because of how many issues there were there. That included the full thickness tear of the shoulder tendon.

I had rotator cuff surgery 1-12-16, after ignoring it for quite a long time. Like you x-rays, MRI, physical therapy, cortisone shots my ortho dr decided surgery would be best even though he said “it MIGHT, MAYBE have a tear”. After surgery, he said it was completely torn! Arnica is fantastic!!! I had hernia repair in 2006....no real swelling, hardly any drainage....nothing but fantastic. It took until August/September for me to be able to put on a T-shirt the “normal” way, and to be able to reach back to unfastens my bra. My dr ordered an at home machine that fit over my shoulder & circulated cold water around my shoulder, rather than use ice. Amazing machine!!!

Really appreciate that even after having surgery yourself you took the time to post this helpful info. You were really smart to have gone ahead with the surgery and didn’t put it off. I waited 9 years after my initial injury after doing PT and steroid shots. Just assumed it was all better since mobility/strength came back and pain was gone.......until it WASN’T!
Your tip about getting an ice machine like yours is great and has been super helpful for me. I’ve tried several different types of ice bags but u can’t beat the convenience of how a small machine can just cycle cold off and on without going back and forth to freezer.
Also good tip that you recommend having some help. I thought I’d be fine with just my husband for a couple days over the weekend after my surgery.
WRONG! We both really benefited from having my step-mom come. Your 5 day recommendation was perfect length of time to have that additional helper around.

Thank you for your tips (watched about a week before my surgery) now approaching post op 3 weeks. You provided helpful tips. I was able to get things set up to be on my own (after someone helping me get settled at home just after surgery). The one additional tip (I don't think I have seen) is to put the ice machine on a light switch timer - so it goes on/off. This helped me sleep much better rather than having to unplug/plug the darn thing. and YES on freezing water bottles (small Fiji water bottles from Target sold in a 6 pack (5 fit)in the machine). I have 3 sets to have 5 frozen at all times, but it has been amazing. Slept in my recliner for 2 weeks, but now in bed! I had everything set up for accessibility to my functional right side. Happy to share other "solo" tips if any one is interested!! I underestimated my tummy issues from the pain meds, but that was straightened out in 3-4 days!. Thank you!! @Behood66 I was able to manage the placement and straps on the pad. If you have it before surgery, perhaps practice. Change out your important light bulbs before surgery, have a set of dishes, cooking items put, at counter level. Stock up on microwaveable foods (cook ahead and freeze?). Get a few large t- shirts and pull on pants. A long handled bath brush was great. Watch the videos in this post. Good luck

I’ve had problems with the shoulder fro the last few months but nothing too painful just discomfort. About four days ago I had my workout and the next morning. I was in severe pain. The pain subsides on each muscle and goes to another and back and forth. I literally can’t lift the arm to either side. I have a basic sling arm and helps a lot…it doesn’t look good based on people’s experience with not so much pain and are able to move their arm

Very informative video. I fell down 12 stairs. Broke my humerus bone in my arm, tore my rotator cuff, also the bicuspid muscle/tendon. Yes the nerve block is very very important although I was reluctant to take it as it was presented only 45 min before surgery. Noting I had to be awake and the thought of a needle going into my chest terrified me. I begged for an extra night in the hospital. Kudos to you for going home same day. I do not tolerate anaethetic well so I was allowed the extra night. I am 18 mths post op. A recliner is so very helpful but having someone with you is vital IMO. I had a plate screwed into repair my arm approx 17 cm long. 1.) Yes staying ahead of the pain is so very important. 2.) Managing to get up from something as simple as sitting was difficult. 3.) I had a pole to aid in getting out of the bath. Which I was not allowed to bath for 4 weeks. 52 staples in my arm for that reason. 4.) Stool softner is very important. VERY important. 5.) Clothing I had my daughter-in-law bring me her ole maternity shirts , this allowed for slipping in and out of. Most important is the sleep which I never was able to get a good night since my fall. I tried to keep my arm in a position of comfort but not one night yet have I managed 4 hrs straight. Since I broke my left arm and left shoulder and I am right handed, I slept entirely on my right side. Which so bothered my back. I would and still attempt to lay on my left side but whoaaaa that is not happening. Any info on sleeping you can address would be so much appreciated. Above all a great selection of movies on hand LOL . Great information. I fear for what muscles in my back I am sure I damaged but no way ever in my life will ever I have anyone cut open my shoulder. I have considered having the plate removed, but the thought of my arm going through another surgery is out of my books. Great info and best wishes.

I did nerve block, wanted to see how intense pain would get compared to previous pain I've had with other injuries. No pain meds for over 30 hours....it's blown out of proportion. Back pain from a ruptured disc is severe...shoulder pain post op for this surgery for me anyway.........nothing anyone can't bear that has a little bit of gumption. I've had 3 5mg Oxycodones that knock the pain back so I can rest at night...otherwise it's not for lack of tolerance as much as trying to get some restful sleep. Pain meds are good for a good reason, not just for aches and throbs....deal with the pain and you will be better off for it in the end. Build your tolerance for pain is what I am trying to say. If your hands shake, it's time to take a med.

Thank you for sharing. I have same surgery (shoulder/bicep) on July 14th. My neighbors are letting me borrow their ice machine...thank goodness, as it is expensive just to rent. Thanks for suggesting the essential oils too. That's a good idea. I'm an avid golfer so, this injury has certainly kept me from playing. Doc believes I'll be back at it 100% and playing frequently. I will watch your videos, the further along I get, post-surgery. Appreciate it very much, Donna!

Everything was great EXCEPT the natural junk. To each his own. If its a placebo and it helps, go for it, but I almost stopped watching when the natural stuff showed up

Awesome video. I learned that ibuprofen slows the healing process. My meds were oxycodone for severe pain and hydrocodone for moderate pain. I had no pain. Praise God!
Thank you so much for the pointers. So helpful. I wasn’t allowed to use the sling with the pillow. I was told it wasn’t good for my rotator cuff and to have my arm laying against me.
Surgeon used the collagen patch by Smith&Nephew.

Thank you so much Donna. Very helpful. I'm scheduled for surgery on Dec 11 and after reading recovery times and personal capabilities after surgery online, I'm going to postpone my surgery and just continue physical therapy. I live alone and don't have anyone to help me at home and had no idea the surgery would be this debilitating. Showering, not driving etc. I'll talk to my doc soon and see if he's ok with it. He did offer to just keeping with the P/T instead of surgery but I opted at first to get the surgery until reading about what a fiasco post surgery is and the duration of recovery. Thank you so much. Very helpful...What a lovely home you have! Get well, Steve.

Stephen Cecere, I hope that you get success out of PT. If you need surgery, I would ask your surgeon if there are agencies that can come to the house and help you that first week!

Thanks for sharing. I'm 1 week post op, with repairing major tear in rotator cuff tendon - ouch. Off hard pain drugs in 5 days for me. Doing ice a few hours daily with gel pack. I'm cheap but ice is great relief. Had Wife with me - big blessing - must have someone to assist you. For first 7 days, not more than 3 hours sleep at time. I started new job so I took 2 days off but hacking away with one hand pc work. Good luck.

Thank you for the post. Just completed my rotator cuff surgery this week. I must say 3 months of physical therapy before they told you to get an MRI was much too long. The physical therapist actually should of recommended an MRI done right after xray showed up negative. But none the less your description of your post op was accurate and some great advice given....🙏

Thank you Donna Good information. I just had my surgery a couple days ago and I'm on track on what you are doing. If anybody else is listening I also recommend CBD oil. It's expensive but well worth it.

@@alicemorton9145 I go to a local market called Fraser farms here in Oceanside California. But the brand I get you can get online as well It's called Charlotte's Web. Get the high milligram high strength stuff because the low dose stuff doesn't do quite as good. It's expensive but it's worth it especially if you're trying to heal up

I’ve previously had neck surgery from breaking vertebrae. This is much worse. But…. I needed the surgery; your video has helped.

Thank you for this video, I had surgery years ago for a mild tear due too] wear and tear of the joint but fell about 3 weeks ago and may be facing surgery on my right shoulder. It really helped to hear you go over your first week post op to refresh the course of care and what to expect. Thanks again
