My wife is a kindred spirit. She is in the first week post op. Many of the points you make parallel her journey. It’s reassuring knowing that she is not alone! Thanks.
I am at day 4 post op. So far, its the worst thing i have ever volunteered to do to my body, and i have had 5 other surgeries in my life. My advice, is to make sure you need this, and then be prepared for a lot of pain the first week, followed by months of rehab.
I’m at day 8 after my rotator cuff and bicep tendon repair surgery Your videos have been very helpful and encouraging. Thank you for taking the time to do them!
You have been a lifesaver and I have been so appreciative of having your videos as a resource, because you truly "get it"! Everything you describe is exactly what I'm going through and how I have been feeling....the emotional roller coaster, the grumpiness and frustration. I am on Day 11 and I see my surgeon for my post op visit later today. I actually tore BOTH rotator cuffs (tripped over a raised grate in the middle of the sidewalk and fell forward), so I'm potentially looking at a 2nd surgery, although I'm trying not to worry about that too much at the moment. My main "issue" right now is not being able to get a good night's sleep, even in the power lift recliner. Consequently I'm tired and lethargic during the day and feeling in a very negative frame of mind. Hopefully it will get better! Thanks for the spot on words!
Donna - Going in for surgery 7/30/20. I’m really appreciative of you sharing the lessons learned...it’s very comforting knowing what to expect!!! I’m going through all of your posts...so good!
Hello, I had 16mm full thickness superspunatus tear, I can't sleep 20 minute's! Its day 8, I have the CPM chair 6 hrs a day. It is the only thing that helps pain. Once I'm still, I'm in "HELL" after awhile. I can walk outside, eat, even watch TV and the pain isn't much. But completely still, sleeping, kills! Hits hard.. radiates from scapula around the side of arm up to the ac joint. Other times it bangs on the superspunatus repair... also on the 2 incisions front/ back. Can you or anyone relate? See my UA-cam channel I have videos just showing my post-op experience
Thank you for explaining your surgery experience. I am sending your knowledge to my brother. He and I both tore our rotator cuff! Your video was a Lifesaver for me 12 days post op my Rotator Cuff Surgery. Your Insite will be a great help to my Brother.
I am heading for reverse shoulder replacement and rotator cuff repair, same shoulder, same time. Thank you for your videos. I've already bought my big sleeve poncho style tops. I am now searching for the S bar. Thanks so much!! I'm headed for surgery in 2 weeks.
Thanks for the tip about the poncho! I am now trying to find one because my surgery is in a few days.Took your advice from another one of your videos and picked up the Arnica tabs and the ibuprofen/Tylenol combo which now you can actually find it all in one pill. Your videos are extremely helpful!
Hi, Donna. You really messed up your shoulder. So glad you have completely healed. Your videos are an inspiration to me. I fell on the ice a year ago and sprained my shoulder then reinjured it doing yard work in the fall. I am now on day 10 of my recovery. I had two tears ... the superspinatous (sp?) and one other (can't remember what the doc said) but it wasn't as bad as he thought. I was off the pain meds in 36 hours and only taking Tylenol as needed (if at all). No pain to complain about. Used the ice machine solid the first two days. It was one that had some kind of fluid in it that cooled the cuff and only needed to be topped off with a capful of water every day and I could leave it on all the time (as long as I was stationery). I didn't feel like the cuff fit properly but my arm was still numb the first night, It must have worked as I had no swelling. The last few days I've been irritated by the sling ... doesn't hurt but I sure feel better after taking it off for my exercises (I am supposed to bend my arm at the elbow ... didn't damage the muscle like you did) and putting it back on. When the sling is off, I have some aches in my upper arm above the elbow and below the underarm. My next appointment is in 4 days. No spasms yet but it is just enough extra weight on one side to throw your posture off ... like carrying a baby. I've been able to cook simple meals, fill the dishwasher and do laundry. Not being able to drive sucks. I realized a week before the surgery that with it being my right arm, there is no way driving is going to happen anytime soon. I got my hair cut short the week before the surgery so it would be easier to manage. I figured out make-up, too. Where there is a will, there is a way. Just ordered my second poncho. Thanks for that find! I started watching your videos in December and prepared everything ahead of time and started practicing I have recommended your videos to my doctor when he scoffed at me watching You Tube. I thought I would write up a list of things to do in preparation for a hand-out to his patients. Your videos will be at the top of the list! Thanks again for your positive attitude and support. Liz
Liz, it sounds like you are doing great! Isn't it funny how closed minded some of the doctors are! They assume that we are watching things that give misinformation when actually many are quite helpful! Much more helpful than the lack of information they are providing! I'll be interested in knowing if this doctor uses your handout!
@@funmakingmoneyify I'm approaching 7 weeks post op now. I started PT at 3 weeks doing passive exercises. Last Monday I shed the sling and started with new exercises - pulleys, walking up the wall, etc. By Tuesday there was a world of difference in my mobility. I drove for the first time and am driving to my PT appointments and to the store now. Thursday my arm, wrist, elbow, everything hurt. I'm a little better today. Guess the exercises are working. I did give my prep list to both my doctor and my therapist. Both are interested and I think it will at least be posted on their website if not used as a hand out. I am going to publish it on an electronic publication site later this week and will send you a link if you would like to share with your audience. I'm going in to work for 3-4 hours a week but won't return in full capacity until I can lift things and feel more comfortable driving. My therapist is pleased with my range of motion. He says I'm a week or two ahead. He keeps adding and changing exercises every day or two. I can touch the back of my neck but not the top of my head yet. Make-up and other things get easier with each day. Liz
Thank you so very much, Donna, for candidly sharing your experience and advice. I am one week post surgery (on dominant arm) and i began watching your videos several weeks ago, in preparation for my recovery. They have been so helpful. I find myself re-watching several of them. I really can't thank you enough!
@@funmakingmoneyify My next hurdle is trying to figure out how to get my hair colored at the salon. (Mainly, how the heck the stylist will rinse/shampoo my hair...those salon sinks we women are used to are terrible on a good day with a perfectly normal shoulder! LOL) Vain, perhaps, but anything to make me feel like my old self again is good! Have a great day! And thanks again for sharing wisdom.
Hi Donna, your descriptions are spot on and greatly appreciated. I do have to refrain from looking ahead at your progress as I get a bit excited and over do it. Thank you for being so specific for you examples and suggestions. You're an amazing woman.
Thx for posting. I’m 2 weeks post labral tear & rotator cuff repairs. I do neck stretches to avoid headaches. I don’t wear the sling unless I’m out-& that’s rare. I began PT 6 days post surgery. The pain is tough, you’re so right. I’ve been wearing tube tops-dressing from the bottom up & yes, wearing ponchos is a must. Thx again.
You’ve done a great job explaining all of the little details that are extremely important! I’m having the surgery next Friday, and your videos are the perfect prep material. Thanks for taking the time to make the videos! Job well done!! 👍
Tedvirgeliz19 good luck to you as well! We’ll have to follow up here afterwards. Now I have to find shirts I can get on and off easily. Looked on Amazon and a plain men’s t-shirt with snaps on one side in XL is $38 for one!
Tedvirgeliz19 my surgery went well on 1/24. No major pain, but a lot of soreness. Surgeon installed three anchors in the humerus, shaved the base of the clavicle bones, cleaned up the tendons, and repaired the bicep. PT is going well. Slow and steady. Had a reaction to either the suture material or tape adhesive, as the incisions got very red and raised. On an antibiotic just in case. Seems to be getting better. Using the Breg Kodiak ice therapy machine. Works great! Something that has been very helpful is a shirt from slingshirt.com. There are left and right shoulder versions that secure the shoulder and side seem with magnets. Perfect for PT and doctor visits. A bit pricey, but super convenient. I’m two weeks post-op, and haven’t used much pain meds; maybe 15 pills. Overall, better than I expected. PT is a must, as you don’t want to develop frozen shoulder. Doing my home exercises. Still can’t use the arm for much. Just started arm curls with a 1 lb weight. How are you doing? To others considering the surgery, the anxiety is worse than the surgery itself. If you’ve been putting it off, just do it and get out of pain!
NJBeachbum12 thanks for up date. 1lb weights and curls-super! My 1st post op appt is in 3 days. Only PT thus far is 20 fist tightening per hour. Surgery pain bad for one week even ON meds. Bicep repair is most painful. I sound like a baby! No medical report yet on extent of damage/repair. Slow but steady progress is my goal. Is going back to work an issue for you?
Just wanted to thank you for this video, I’m day 8 post-op and this really helped me gauge my recovery process and realize that I’m progressing similarly. I’ll definitely be watching the other videos in the upcoming weeks.
Hi Donna, thank you so much for your videos - they have been so helpful to me . I am two weeks post surgery, large tear on the supraspinatus and impingement of the acromion onto the biceps tendon. So the orthopedist had to cut four holes in my shoulder, not two, He repaired the supraspinatus rotator cuff tendon, and then he shaved off bone from the bottom of the acromion "hook". I am a teacher, and unfortunately all of this was the result of a tall, very fit student who decided to run backward, very fast, down a school hallway, ramming me back-to-back and pitching me headfirst into a cinderblock wall (the shoulder), and into the edge of a door (my right index finger, the back of my head, and the trapezius muscle at the top of my shoulder). This happened this past Valentine's Day, February 14! What a Valentine's Day gift. So here I am after surgery, and I have to say you are right that the first week is the worst. I started to feel a whole lot better as week 2 progressed, and I found I could do more and more things. I experienced those muscle spasms too - I got them at night just as I was drifting off to sleep. Different muscles all over my body would jerk me awake! I forgot to ask the doctor about that. My doctor gave me a nerve block before surgery, but guess what, it didn't work. It blocked all of the nerves down the neck, but it didn't reach the end of the shoulder, the arm, or the fingers. I woke up and the pain was pretty bad. We didn't have any pain medication because the doctor expected the nerve block to work! When we got home I took Percocet, but to be honest I don't do well on these pain meds. The next day I continued to take it but I missed a step as I was going down the basement stairs and fell onto my knee and the elbow of the operated arm. Of course I had my sling on, and it turned out that I didn't do any damage to the operated shoulder. Horrible experience, though. I stopped those pain meds. The doctor's instructions said to be careful going up and down stairs - take heed, everyone! Those pain pills affect different people differently, I guess, and they're just too much for me. I was fine with using ice on the shoulder with an occasional Tylenol or Advil. I found the pain to be manageable. I also found that if I tried to do too many things around the house that my shoulder would ache and hurt. I found out you have to take it easy. Thanks again, Donna - your suggestions were very helpful for preparing for surgery! I use lavender essential oil now too - it's soothing.
Pamela, I just cringed thinking about your fall! That is all of our worst nightmares after having this kind of surgery! I am so glad that no damage was done. I hope that your recovery continues to go well and thanks for your advice to people.
I just found your video & although it is a 3 yr old video your comments are right on the mark for me. I’m s/p 4 weeks post right (dominant) rotator shoulder repair w/ bone graft placement. Because the bone graft takes a full 6 weeks to properly heal, no PT until after 6 weeks hopefully. Everything is a challenge & being a totally independent 83 yr old female, it’s hard for me to ask family to help. I’m less depressed, more independent & yesterday I was able to do a bed linen change using my left arm, eating is more challenging. Unable to sleep in a recliner as handle to lower feet is on the right. No pain meds, only Tylenol PM at bedtime, sleeping still not great. Recommend ice machine daily. And yes, miss being able to drive. Enjoyed your video, thanks.
@@funmakingmoneyify 8 weeks post op & starting PT 2X/week. First time driving & definitely noticed using my right hand on the steering wheel at the 1 o’clock position is tiring as you had mentioned in a previous video. So good to be getting back to some independence. Little things like dressing taking more time to complete, even trying to put earrings in my ears can be a challenge.
Donna, thank you so much for sharing your story. I just hit week two and I thoroughly enjoy watching your videos because they give me some perspective and you have some great tips. Much appreciated and I'm looking forward to week three and beyond! This isn't my first rodeo on on the surgery front as I had a terrible ruptured patellar tendon injury four years ago that led to major surgery and a pretty brutal 12 month recovery because part of my injury included the tendon ripping off part of the bone as well. On the shoulder front, I had a full tear of two different rotator cuff tendons and all kinds of issues with my bicep muscle. All of this led to seven different arthroscopic holes and a major "open" incision in the bicep muscle area. Yuck! Onward and upward and thanks again for documenting these videos. So far, I feel like our stories are matching each other almost perfectly, which gives me some comfort and hope!
Day 8 today following complex tendon transfer, thank you for this, seem to be experiencing the same journey. Love your tips, good to know what to expect and how you felt
Donna just watched your first video post surgery. I really appreciate the time and effort you put into giving us this info. I’m not sure what type of surgery I will need yet but trying to see options. Thanks so much. Arlene
Thank you so much for sharing this I was really panicking about my surgery especially with my three year old and also in the middle of potty training But I learned a lot. Thank you again
I'm one week post op from the same surgery, every day is better and better. you're videos really have helped me cope and know what to expect.. Thank you for sharing
Hi Donna! 3wks ago, I had right shoulder surgery. Thanks for all your time and information. This is not easy. I cannot completely remember the full surgical procedure, but I do know that I had an 80% supraspinatus tendon tear and partial rupture due to bursa in the socket joint. I watched a video of a similar surgery on UA-cam, and now am watching your 'vlogs.' One week at a time... ugh, Ugh, UGH
Donna, I found your video's upon searching for sites regarding rotator cuff surgery. I feel better having my brother as a coach. He had same surgery. He used same surgeon for his rotator cuff surgery. I also used same surgeon who performed my hip replacement surgery. I dont look forward to the surgery, but between you and my brother will help in recovery. My physical therapist is 1/4 mile from home . We live in very small town.My wife will assist also.
Donna, I'm so thankful I've found your video's. I'm scheduled for full surgery in September at Rothman Center in Philadelphia. I am a 73, and have absolutely nothing separating the shoulder joint, the doctor said the terrible pain I'm experiencing is from bone on bone. Ouch.
Lorraine, I am assuming that you are having a complete shoulder replacement? If so, you are going to recover so much faster than us who have rotator cuff surgery. My mother-in- law had that surgery and recovered fast and well!
So glad to hear that, the doctor did say I would be àble to lift my arm straight up the next day. I will be so glad. Your videos are really informative and will follow some of your suggestions for the homeopathic pills and the lotions. You really did play your advice forward, and I'm sure you helped many. Thank you so much.
D maax, I got injured by falling down steps in my house! Mary, it is amazing how your brain figured out was to compensate, you will be fine! It's nice to have your husband to help you, especially the first week or two! Good luck to you both!
I'm having surgery Jan 31 2020. I've watched your journey post surgery, its been very helpful in getting prepared for mine, gives great insight on what to expect, and questions to ask doctors. Thanks for your help...ttys Scott
Thank you soooo much for all of your help. I'm scheduled for 6/27/18 and then will have to have 2nd shoulder done. I don't have a recliner, but thinking seriously about purchasing a new or used one after watching your videos. I'm 72!!
Donna, I have a leather chair that is semi reclined permanently with an ottoman, that I think might work. How far back are you reclining in your recliner when you sleep? You only show your recliner in week 1 video,I think? Thank you, you are sooo helpful! Jan
Hi Donna I love your blog I too have used the ice machine and nerve block I totally love it I also have right rotator cuff surgery had surgery yesterday I can totally relate to everything you say the only thing I haven't done was take a number two and wondered how I'm going to do that with my left hand my hubby has been really good helping with me with my hair you are right about doing stuff to Early I really felt good right after surgery but now I also have spasms so anyhow I'm going to follow you right along the doctor recommended oxycodone and Tylenol and I hope to get off of it soon you are a great help I will be following you thanks Donna for a top I used a T-shirt that I had I cut it down the side and the sleeve I purchased a snap strip and sold it on I have snaps all the way up the side and the sleeve it helped thanks for the tip about bath and body with your stretchy shirt hugs Mary
Very informative and helpful video. My experience so far in day 3 is far good. No pain. Its my right hand as well. I got a great start on the pain medication the doctor prescribed. Thank you for sharing and will be watching all of your videos😊❤
Thanks for the video! 16 days post surgery. Had a appointment for rehab schedule and they checked my range of motion. Top anchor and clavicle bone they removed was painful. Rehab starts in 2 weeks. Pain is the worst back behind my right ear in the neck area going across my lat muscle. Hopefully it goes away and now the only reason I'm taking Tylenol. Right shoulder repair the same as yours. Right bicep tendon detachment is the main reason for my surgery. Hopefully you are totally healed by now. Take care.
Great to hear your totally healed! I just now found the problem was the arm i was supposed to hang down and move. I really didn't get all the information that I needed to begin with. Maybe they told me the information after surgery, but I was out of it. Started rehab yesterday, 4 weeks after surgery. Need to do the work to recover properly. Guy at work had the identical surgery and he goes bowling. Hope I get the same results. Thanks!
Hi Donna, I found your videos online a couple weeks ago...I am 12 days post surgery and have found your energy and input really helpful. I have been SO independent my entire life and am having a rough time with the "depending on others" thing..as to be expected I guess...I have had my own custom painting an decorating business for 20 yrs and am a singer songwriter of 4o yrs.....thus its so difficult with so many weeks ahead of me before I can work or play guitar again! AND simple things like putting my hair in a tie or putting a bra on! ... your calm demeaner has helped even in these first few weeks. Passive Range of motion pt starts Monday.....one day at a time....thanks again for takingf the time to do these videos! BTW my hometown is east of Cleveland...down the lake from Buffalo! stay warm!
Hi Nance, my route 90 neighbor! It is tough to rely on others for sure! But you sound like a very creative person so be creative now and think of ways that you can utilize your time that doesn't require you arm. Work on lyrics about shoulder surgery!! LOL! This time a year it is nice to wear baggy tops that can hide not wearing a bra! Freedom baby! Hang in there, you will start being able to do more before you know it, and let others help you!
Hey Donna , thanks so much for taking the time to support we newbies at rotator cuff surgery! I am sure your life has gotten back to normal and it's so cool you still are here! A BIG thanks again for that! moving into my week 3! haven't slept well at all yet..thinking I will get back to Hydrocodone at night and see if it helps. My Doc says no NSAIDS! BOOO! I keep telling myself to be patient but thats tough... keeping busy is a must for me! last week seemed to take a month to go by!! Lol!!! Yesterday I made an attempt at writing some lyrics ....key word being attempted! Ha! baby steps! Thanks again! Nance
Too funny I too am following you, we also are from East of Cleveland a town called Euclid Ohio. My RC surgery got scrubed last Thursday cuz of something that the anesthesiologist saw in my cardio report for my cardiologist. So I had to go to the cardiologist to get it cleared. Now we're back to reschedule in my surgery hopefully to get in next Thursday.although I lift up in you could and vermilion for 8 years I was born in a little town called Elyria Ohio. We ended up leaving Euclid 15 years ago and came back down here where I was raised in North Tampa.the only thing I'm finding different pretty much from watching all these videos is that the physical therapy starts the day after surgery down here they let a machine just let lift your arm up so you don't get a frozen shoulder. Because you says the last thing you would want is a frozen shoulder it's worse than recovering from the surgery itself much more painful. what I'm concerned about is I've got pretty good motion of my arm even though it does hurt at times but I'm going to be in more pain and end up in more pain forever if I get the surgery. My question for you Donna is how much pain you are in before surgery and did you think about the same and what is the pain level post surgery since you been out for a while?
I am 4 days into my surgery. I’m so glad I watched your videos. So many good tips. I just stopped taking my narco pills during the day and will take them at night. And Advil/Tylenol combo as needed for daytime. So, we’ll see!
10-12-20: RC surgery done on 9-29-20. Comparing my recovery to yours here. ANd plan/hope to do so at the progress point-periods that you have chosen. I went in for bone spur shaving and ended up having a "massive" (Dr's term) cuff tear repaired. I'm pretty sure I repeatedly tore it beginning 10 months back by awkwardly by operating my Miata top with one arm. I am a 65yo, 28yr high level tennis player in very good health. I put up with the pain by by periodic steroid injections to the joint, as an earlier MRI did not, for some reason, reveal the tear. 1) Still on the pain meds on as-needed basis. 2) No spasms (yet), but I do have the same "back bar". 3) Same pendulum exercises. 4) No ice machine. 5) I'm up to 4 hrs in my bed now before I wake up achy and move tot the recliner! 6) Lite hiking in various state parks 2-3 miles (no Buffalo...always summer here in San Antonio) since day 6. P.S. Your a darling for having made these videos!!
Thank you SO MUCH Mrs. Donna! I really appreciate your honest and candid posts. I think it is a a bit different for us as women to have surgery because we are usually the caretakers. And I have to agree with the "once you start trying to do your normal activities people (family and friends) just figure oh she's okay" and don't help as much. I already had this conversation with my husband about laundry and cooking, etc. and I think his eyes kinda glazed over. My surgery is scheduled for 08/10/2020. So at least the kids are home because it's summer. Thanks again! You're awesome!
@@funmakingmoneyify I'm doing okay. Some off and on pain in the front of the shoulder. I am definitely keeping up with doing the exercises PT gave me. But it's been 12 days and I still can raise my right arm on it's own. It's kind of maddening. I have the thought in my head "raise your right arm" and I can feel that it wants to move but doesn't . A bit unnerving, but each day gets better. It's been a few years since your surgery. Knowing what you know now, what would you do differently?
I'm 2 weeks post surgery. This definitely more frustrating than I thought it would be. I've had to return to work a week after op. I had bicep tendonesis, shaved bone spur and calcium clean up
Thank you for taking the time to post this video. I have rotator cuff and bicep tendon surgery on August 10,2022. Just 3 weeks from this writing. Your information has helped to provide some confidence that this will work out. How are you doing now?
Thank you. Ordering that back knobber. My suggestion to all is invest in a Pottery Barn Teen large bean bag. I tried out my granddaughter's 8 months pre-surgery and this is a treat to sleep in over my recliner. I'm curious if after the initial weaning off a narcotic you took it if severe pain returned.
Floor. I didn't have physical issues of dropping down and getting up. That could be an issue for some. I slept in it for five months before surgery because lying prone was painful. I then slept in it about 3/4 months after surgery, using pillows to pro up and immobilize my shoulders. The first two months I slept with a polar ice machine. My spouse tucked me in with all of this 😊 until I no longer needed the ice wrap.
Wow! I'm not allowed to do half of what you can do, for the first 2 months after surgery, I wasn't allowed to do nothing, they told me I need to heal where the anchors are at. I hope I can get to do as good as you do. Thanks for the videos.
marilynn cottrell, don’t worry you will get there! Every surgeon has different recommendations and also it depends on what was done surgically to repair what was torn. Hang in there!
Hi Donna, your videos are by far the best thing I’ve found, and absolutely invaluable! Thank you so much. I just wish I’d found them before the operation! I had rotator cuff surgery two days ago and so it’s early days (and obviously pretty painful at the moment) but you give me such hope that I will eventually return to normal. Can you give any bra advice at all please? I’m in the UK and there isn’t much available that I think will be suitable. Also, when did you go on holiday for the first time? We are due to go to Cape Town in three and a half weeks. Pre-op, my surgeon said it wasn’t a problem, but I am obviously a little concerned as it’s such a long way! So sorry to hear you damaged your wrist, and hope you are doing well at the moment. Diane
I’m so happy to find your video. I’m 16 days postop right rotator cuff surgery. I had a large cuff tear as well as a labral tear. They want me in the sling/immobilizer thing for 6 weeks total. It looks like we have the same sling/immobilizer. Mine says Top Shelf Universal. I had searched for a video on it to see how it was supposed to go on, because after I removed it the first time, I wasn’t sure I had it back on the right way. I only found videos of other styles. I like the ice machine, but wish it could keep the water cold by itself instead of me having to constantly fill it with ice and water. Did they send you a passive motion chair before your active therapy? If so, about how large is it?
Use water bottles and freeze them so you don't have to replace the ice as often. I did not have a passive motion chair. I wish I could tell you about the sling because it is very important that it fits correctly. I saw the surgeon at 2 weeks post op, and then saw his PA at my 4 week visit. It was at that 4 week visit where the PA actually looked at the sling and said it was fitting wrong and way too loose! And that was contributing to me having a lot of neck spasms.
I had a rotator cuff surgery 10 days ago -- supra and infra tears; bicept repar; frozen shoulder; general cleanout -- and appreciate your testimony and suggestions as there some similarities. One thing you mentioned that's different is you're taking an anti-inflammatory along with pain meds. I've been instructed to stay off all anti-inflammatories for at least two months. Has your surgeon spoken about any risks or limited the dose? Thanks
i was told on Friday that I would need rotator cuff surgery for bicep tendinitis and large tear in 2 tendons. I don't have anyone to help me and that scares me terribly!!!!!!! You detailed information is helpful, but I am still scared and may back out. Not sure what will happen if i don't do surgery. i did 2 months of Phys. therapy; but do not have full range of motion back.
Denise, I can totally understand your hesitation. You have to decide whether you are willing to deal with limited range of motion for the rest of your life. I wish you well!
Donna I’m having my surgery in a weeks. Wondering if you’d done any videos on what it was like immediately after getting from a reclined position to a sitting then standing position? Also what your doctor recommended as far as how soon you could shower etc.
Hello Donna I just wanted to thank you for your insight and inspiration. I am only 3 days old into my right rotator cuff surgery and I have found your calm being a very positive grounding experience spiritually. I sustained my injury while weight lifting and I have learned that taking a multi vitamin and continuing with my amino acids as well as collagen which you can get at Sam's club or GNC will benefit my recovery greatly. I also found that CVS has a shoulder device that you can wear that vibrates creating a massage which I have found very beneficial. I look forward to recovering with you although I know you are completely healed following your weekly information and advice makes it almost like a positive team effort. Goddess bless you always. Blessed Be🌟.
hope it all went well, the worse is not being able to lay down :( I suffered bad constipation despite eating plenty of roughage and taking a few senakot feeling nausea and generally miserable by day 5 lucky it only lasted 36hrs. off all serious pain meds since maybe day 4. Day 8 today. My surgeon says NO anti inflammatory, maybe protocols have changed I use 1000mg Tylenol mainly just bedtime. speedy recovery, this too shall pass......right Talk to text is a lifesaver too
Loved your comment about doing something once then you're expected to do it all the time. Made me chuckle..so true. I am 2 weeks post rotator cuff surgery. Thanks for this!!
Donna, I am having shoulder surgery on July 5 and I have a couple questions. How do you put your hair in a ponytail with one arm? And how soon can you drive?
Mar that is perfectly normal at 2 weeks. Don't over do it as it will just make you more sore. Heck, it was tough at 7 weeks for me to drive! I had to use a small pillow to prop my elbow on.
Hi Donna, I'm scheduled for surgery and started to prepare, your videos are helpful. Question... how did you get your hair tied up, one hand or did someone help?
Hi Donna, thank you for posting these videos. They are really helpful. I have a question for you: at one point were you able to start sleeping in your bed? Thanks.
Selin Hall, I started sleeping in my bed with pillows propping me up after 6 weeks. I hated it and wanted to be back in my recliner but my physical therapist insisted that it would be more normal and better sleep to be in bed. Sleeping was tough for me for a long time.

Very worried, will find out Monday if I have to have surgery. My husband passed away in Sept. and I am 66 and live by myself. I sometimes wish it had been me ...wrong person died. Can I do this by myself? My son is a truck driver so he's gone a lot...just started this job and my daughter-in-law has an almost 3 month old and even though they live next door, I don't get good vibes from them. Hubby and I had/have 14 kittes and 2 inside dogs...they object. He would be very upset if he knew that they want me to give most of them away. You just cannot do that. I am extremely upset about the possibility of surgery. I just pray I don't have to have it. To say that I am worried is an understatement. But, surgery...can I recover without outside help?
I forgot to mention, the surgeon said he'll do a nerve block and I'll also be coming home with a morphine catheter in my arm for 2 days. Plus narcotics.
Old Lady Angler, I am not the expert, but I have never heard of coming home with a morphine catheter after shoulder surgery. That seems excessive especially with our awareness of the history of many doctors over prescribing pain medications.
@@funmakingmoneyify My brother in-law had a catheter when he had his RC surgery several years ago. I asked my doc if I had to come back to his office to have it removed and he said my caregiver could remove it. All you do is pull it out, slap a band aid on it.
Thank you, I just order a pink one and a black one in the small to large. I wear a small or medium top also. So I jumped on it on ebay!! $7.99!! Whoo hoo...How do you get them on the surgical arm though????
hi Donna I only find your video of your recovery surgery, I have 13 days post operation and wondering what all exercises u did, not sure if u have it in any of your videos. They gave me only few and my next opointment is after 4weeks with physio, it seems too long. I used to lift in gym heavy to build my muscles now I lost it all, as I was waiting for operation for 8 moths... thank you for your advice and hoping u did fully recovered, greetings from UK/Czech Republic
Hi Veronika! I was only able to pendulum swings until 4 weeks, then I got to add finger walking while resting my elbow on a table. If you google, "Donna Westermeier", you will find all of my videos. By the way, I love the Czech Republic! I visited Praque and Karlovy Vary and loved it very much!
Donna Westermeier that's so cool u have been in Czech Republic and K Vary is place where I was studying 4 years... such a memories. I'm glad u loved it!! I never been to USA but it's on my list 📃 definitely 😍. i do the walking to and I can also lift slowly lift my arm, but I didn't have biceps repair like u. but they had to give give me pins in my shoulder bone... i gues i have to take slow not to over do it and do some damage. thank you for your replay and yes I did check your videos. take care beautiful and have a great time. xx
Veronika, I know that you are use to being able get some good work outs in, but please don't over due it so that you can heal and not cause more injury. Steady and slow wins the race here! Good luck to you my Czech friend!
The best anti inflammatory cream on the market is Penetrex. Read reviews. Much better then lavender which I do own. I own a ton of creams including biofreeze, icy hot, etc. Penetrex is natural too and does have arnica but also has more natural anti inflammtories. Blue emu is okay too but Penetrex works better. I've had two disks replaced in my neck so I'm not looking forward to this surgery. I already suffer some pain in my neck, arthritis type pain and spasms each day however it's milder then it used to be and the pain is so much better then it was prior to surgery.
Simply by falling down the stairs land on my elbow which in turn jarred my shoulder upward. The doctor believes that the upward jarring caused my acromion bone cut the tendons.
2weeks out but I stupidly used my arm to scoot myself(the excruciating pain was immediate) and I know the pain I'm in is because of this.
Donna! I’m in tears. I feel SEEN even tho this was 8 years ago. I’m 10 days out. So nervous. Thank you!!
Awww! Hang in there!
Had surgery on 5/01/24 and wow what a painful recovery
@@motha_earth1386 , are you starting to feel a little better?
I’m at day 8 after my rotator cuff and bicep tendon repair surgery
Your videos have been very helpful and encouraging.
Maureen, I'm so sorry that you are not sleeping well. Did you try more pillows in different positions? It will get better, hang in there!
Donna - Going in for surgery 7/30/20. I’m really appreciative of you sharing the lessons learned...it’s very comforting knowing what to expect!!! I’m going through all of your posts...so good!
Hello, I had 16mm full thickness superspunatus tear,
I can't sleep 20 minute's!
@@pennyblackwell8264 , good for you in getting prepared! Praying to a great outcome for you!

Everything you mentioned mirrors my exact experience. Thank you so much for posting your weekly updates
Thank you so very much, Donna, for candidly sharing your experience and advice. I am one week post surgery (on dominant arm) and i began watching your videos several weeks ago, in preparation for my recovery. They have been so helpful. I find myself re-watching several of them. I really can't thank you enough!
You are welcome Merideth! Praying for a smooth recovery!
“Patience grasshopper” is very true especially in week 2 which I’m in! Thanks Donna
Thank you for sharing your journey. My surgery can't come soon enough. I want to get it done and get back to normal.
So glad to have found your videos. Having rotator cuff surgery this week, dominant arm. Your updates have been so helpful. Thank you!
Good luck this week and keep me posted as to how you are doing!
Get the Donjoy Ice machine!
So helpful to hear your experience and suggestions, thank you!
NJBeachbum12 good Luck NJBeachbum! Mine is a week from Tuesday. I agree, these videos are helping with anxious thoughts.
Tedvirgeliz19 good luck to you as well! We’ll have to follow up here afterwards. Now I have to find shirts I can get on and off easily. Looked on Amazon and a plain men’s t-shirt with snaps on one side in XL is $38 for one!
NJBeachbum12 I found the tape with snaps and going to sew on shirt cut sleeve through neckline-gotta do soon; surgery one week from tomorrow!
Thanks for this. I'm at a week and feeling useless and frustrated. Trying to be positive. It's much harder than I thought.
I hope that your recovery
continues to go well and thanks for your advice to people.
You are welcome Carol! Hang in there, it sounds like you’re making progress but don’t over do it!❤️
@@funmakingmoneyify 8 weeks post op & starting PT 2X/week. First time driving & definitely noticed using my right hand on the steering wheel at the 1 o’clock position is tiring as you had mentioned in a previous video. So good to be getting back to some independence. Little things like dressing taking more time to complete, even trying to put earrings in my ears can be a challenge.
Thank you for sharing your story. My surgery is tomorrow. Many of the things you have said have really been helpful!!
JAC 1964, I’m glad these videos are giving you some hope; it sounds like you had quite the repair! Best of luck to you.
Day 8 today following complex tendon transfer, thank you for this, seem to be experiencing the same journey. Love your tips, good to know what to expect and how you felt

Hi Donna! 3wks ago, I had right shoulder surgery. Thanks for all your time and information. This is not easy. I cannot completely remember the full surgical procedure, but I do know that I had an 80% supraspinatus tendon tear and partial rupture due to bursa in the socket joint. Judy Deering Hi
Hello
Donna, I found your video's upon searching for sites regarding rotator cuff surgery.
I feel better having my brother as a coach. He had same surgery. He used same surgeon for his rotator cuff surgery. I also used same surgeon who performed my hip replacement surgery.
I dont look forward to the surgery, but between you and my brother will help in recovery. My physical therapist is 1/4 mile from home .
We live in very small town.My wife will assist also.
It’s great to have such a great support team!
Your videos are very reassuring to me. Thank you for sharing.
Thanks Donna, so helpful, I’m in week 2 right now. Good luck with your recovery.

I've watched your journey post surgery, its been very helpful in getting prepared for mine, gives great insight on what to expect, and questions to ask doctors.

This video helped me realize I was where I am expected to be after surgery. I posted it on Facebook for my friends to see where I am with my recovery!
Thank you soooo much for all of your help. I'm scheduled for 6/27/18 and then will have to have 2nd shoulder done. I don't have a recliner, but thinking seriously about purchasing a new or used one after watching your videos. I'm 72!!
Oh goodness, you are going to have to have both shoulders done! I would definitely rent or borrow a chair!
Will do!!
Not at the same time!

You are an amazing woman for sharing your experience with all of us..i truly appreciate it so much.
Take care.
I am totally healed! Did you have someone check the positioning of your sling? That may be causing some of your problems.
Thanks!

A BIG thanks again for that! moving into my week 3! haven't slept well at all yet..thinking I will get back to Hydrocodone at night and see if it helps. My Doc says no NSAIDS! BOOO! keeping busy is a must for me! last week seemed to take a month to go by!!
Good for you! You're through the worst of it!
Thank you! Going through this soon 😊
Well it sounds like you are doing well! Wishing you ontinued success!
You're awesome!
pip6602, ha ha! So true about the eyes glazing over! How are you doing?
@@funmakingmoneyify I'm doing okay. Some off and on pain in the front of the shoulder. I am definitely keeping up with doing the exercises PT gave me. But it's been 12 days and I still can raise my right arm on it's own. It's kind of maddening. I have the thought in my head "raise your right arm" and I can feel that it wants to move but doesn't . A bit unnerving, but each day gets better.
It's been a few years since your surgery. Knowing what you know now, what would you do differently?
pip6602, no, I am glad I got it done. That should is now as strong as my right!
I really appreciate your insights as i go through my own recovery.
hey Joyce! Hope recovery is going well for you. I am 3wks out... frustrating at times, it's quite a roller coaster ride.
Thank you for sharing your experience. I am currently on week two.
I'm 2 weeks post surgery. This definitely more frustrating than I thought it would be. I've had to return to work a week after op. I had bicep tendonesis, shaved bone spur and calcium clean up
Exactly what I have
Thank you for taking the time to post this video. I have rotator cuff and bicep tendon surgery on August 10,2022. Just 3 weeks from this writing. Your information has helped to provide some confidence that this will work out.
How are you doing now?
My shoulder is great! I broke my wrist in January from a bicycle accident and had to have surgery so that’s a whole other story!🤪
@@funmakingmoneyify sorry to hear about your wrist! The good news was to learn your shoulder is doing great to the point you are out and active.
Good to know about the bean bag! The severe pain did not come back after weaning of the narcotic. I substituted ibuprofen and tylenol and did great!
Where did you put the bean bag? On the floor, couch or bed?
Thank you Soo much Donna! I am soo thankful for your videos. I am having surgery on 08/08/2023
Good luck to you and keep me posted how you are doing.
Diane
How did you hurt your shoulder?I am 3 months post op for the same surgery and I hurt like hell.Hope you are doing better!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks
No, he did not, but I would follow your doctor’s instructions.
I got that Suzanne Somer top and I love it.I wore it to the dr today
What size did she get? Do you know? I'm average size and am worried the XL Will be too big
I don’t know what size she got, I got the xl
crystal martin, if you’re an average size get the smaller of the two sizes. I am 5’6” 145lbs
i had my tear done this week no pain pills yet 6 days no sling using ice machine 3-10 times a day, 3 tiny holes only
Wow!
i was told on Friday that I would need rotator cuff surgery for bicep tendinitis and large tear in 2 tendons.
Donna
I’m having my surgery in a weeks.
Wondering if you’d done any videos on what it was like immediately after getting from a reclined position to a sitting then standing position?
Also what your doctor recommended as far as how soon you could shower etc.
I could take a shower 3 days after surgery. I did not make videos from reclining to sitting to standing, but you have the other arm to help.
Are you able to drive a car after the surgery?
I wonder if an acupuncture would help with the neck?
Thank you so much...🥰
Hello Donna I just wanted to thank you for your insight and inspiration.
Going in Tomorrow Thank you
hope it all went well, the worse is not being able to lay down :( I suffered bad constipation despite eating plenty of roughage and taking a few senakot feeling nausea and generally miserable by day 5 lucky it only lasted 36hrs. off all serious pain meds since maybe day 4. Day 8 today. My surgeon says NO anti inflammatory, maybe protocols have changed I use 1000mg Tylenol mainly just bedtime. speedy recovery, this too shall pass......right
Talk to text is a lifesaver too
Loved your comment about doing something once then you're expected to do it all the time. Made me chuckle..so true. I am 2 weeks post rotator cuff surgery. Thanks for this!!
LOL! It is so true Kathy! Hope you are recovering well.
I like your sling. Is that Breg or Donjoy?
Thanks for the info
Thank you for sharing, it helps me a lot ❤️
Two weeks in and the worst is the neck spasms. But I have a herniated disk at c-7
My daughter got me some pain patches she puts on my neck and that helps a lot
Patti Cakes, I’m glad you found a way to get some relief. A herniated disc would certainly complicate things!
Donna, I am having shoulder surgery on July 5 and I have a couple questions. How do you put your hair in a ponytail with one arm? And how soon can you drive?
Debbie, I couldn’t put my hair in a ponytail without help for like 8 weeks. I was told not to drive for the first 6 weeks while in a sling.
I am at 2 weeks now also. I get tired easily. Still have pain in surgery site. I have been driving some. That wears me out just doing that.
Denise Wood, I had help until I could do it on my own at 8 weeks.
@@funmakingmoneyify - ugh... thank you Donna!
Thank you for this. 🤙🏼
Great video i went to my dock 2day im 2 weeks after my op
He wanted me to life my hand over my head
Could you do this after 2 weeks ,
No way
No
Very helpful, thank you 👏🏻
Donna, I am having my surgery next week (same as yours) and was wondering how you knew what type brace / sling to purchase / what type you bought?
Look at the don joy 4
My doctor gave me mine before surgery
Donna, did you have an MRI arthrogram done prior to surgery? Or just an MRI? Thank you for sharing.
Just an MRI
How did you get the top on?
@@claudettedamron3616, You straighten the arm with the bad shoulder and put the sleeve through and then put shirt over your head and then the other arm through.
Thank you for the help. Hey! Your teeth are brand new!
Old Lady Angler, wow! Well I learn something new every day!
I'm 4.5 weeks post op. Just now doing the exercises (pendulum etc)
My doc didn’t want me doing anything but let my arm go straight down and up only. He told me no other exercises and this is my 2nd week after surgery.
great update!
What size PONCHO did you buy???
I bought the small to large size.
Thank you, I just order a pink one and a black one in the small to large. I wear a small or medium top also. So I jumped on it on ebay!! $7.99!! Whoo hoo...How do you get them on the surgical arm though????
Muscle spasms....so many muscle spasms. Really appreciate your video series.
The spasms can be nasty. Thanks for your videos.
Mines are aggravating, going to my 2nd week of bankart repair
Love watching all your videos….
My date is January 19…..
Good luck to you!
hi Donna
I only find your video of your recovery surgery, I have 13 days post operation and wondering what all exercises u did, not sure if u have it in any of your videos.
Thank you, good to know about Penetrex!
How did you do all that damage?
Simply by falling down the stairs land on my elbow which in turn jarred my shoulder upward. The doctor believes that the upward jarring caused my acromion bone cut the tendons.
