    FANTACULAR
    1. The intro is not Bee Gees like at all BUT I do like it
    2. I feel like this song is LOUD. Likes super loud with not much dynamic contrast which I'm actually okay with here.
    3. The lyrics are REALLY GOOD. Tons of repetition but it's still really good.
    4. I hear Barry and Robin but to me it doesn't sound like them the whole time. I feel like I hear a woman singing then it turns into them singing or something. Please someone tell me if I'm wrong here or not but that's what I'm hearing.

      The part that says: "why ain't we living, living together instead of being so so far apart" and "why ain't we living together, living together instead of being alone" is Barry that sings. Robin sings the verses "I lay my heart on you..." and "my life was emptiness...". I think Barry's voice is the same that you can hear in "tragedy"; "stayin' alive" but much higher and Robin's voice sounds more like a woman in my opinion

    The verses "I lay my heart on you" etc are Robin in falsetto. When I first heard the album, I thought it was a woman and possibly Samantha Sang who had sung the song Emotion (written by Barry and Robin) which was a big hit in 1978 (check it out). I truly think Robin sung the verse as a female part. I would have love to have heard more falsetto from him in other songs. Maybe it just wasn't his thing.

    Barry said they had 5 voices they could use. ( each individual, plus Barry & Robin and Barry & Mo)...he wasn't counting the falsetto. Mo said that Barry & Robin blend so well together it sounds like one voice. ( That was from an interview where Mo was talking about Fanny be tender w/ my love. He said that it is a whole different sound and if you listen close ( is it Barry or Robin, hard to tell sometimes). This is a killer album! In my opinion, so is Living Eyes and Still Waters for their later work. But there was nothing to compare with Bee Gees live! They were such nice people too!

    Robin sings falsetto lead in this. The strong preference in the recording business seemed to be to push Barry's reinforced falsetto and restrict Robin to supporting Barry. Possibly why this did not make concerts or live performances.

      @@mujahidamin8504 Here is a quote from Spencer, Robin's son in talking about the song in an article done on the 40th anniversary of the "Spirits" album.
      Tucked away on the album’s second side is “Living Together,” arguably one of the most interesting pieces of ear candy they crafted during this period. Opening with a full symphonic, Beethoven-esque overture, it escalates into a waft of strings before it dissolves into a low synth hit and transitions into a satisfying funk shuffle. The refrains break twice and fold into verses with Robin’s lead vocal, which is a startling, and quite wonderful, contrast to Barry’s.
      “[It] really showcases my dad’s crazy falsetto. It’s nuts,” Spencer muses. “Spirits was one of the first Bee Gees records that didn’t feature my dad heavily on lead vocals. And I wish there had been more of that. It’s my only real criticism of it."

    This was Robin's lone contribution to the Spirits album and he tries his own falsetto here. The song itself has a nice funky groove, but Robin's falsetto and the piercing vocals at the pitch change is just too much. One song after another in high intense falsetto makes these songs too similar. It all lent itself to the backlash and criticism that followed.

    • @afreakaboucher1316

      What do you mean by Robin's falsetto was too intense and are you blaming the Bee Gees for the Disco backlash because they sang in falsetto ,I Love their falsettos but I don't know why Robin Gibb didn't use his Falsetto voice more it sounds excellent 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍

    • @allisons3663
      @allisons3663 3 роки тому +1

      @@afreakaboucher1316 Yes, there was a huge backlash against the "Bee Gees Sound" by 1980 due to the constant use of falsetto on a large number of hits (Bee Gees, Andy Gibb, Samantha Sang) in a short period of time. In 1978 and 1979, their music was dominating US radio and the rock crowd hated that falsetto sound. Prior to the Spirits Having Flown, the falsetto was used in conjunction with normal voices in the harmonies but on Spirits even the harmonies were high falsetto, which even by Bee Gees fans standards was too much. They were selling millions of records every week while they were recording Spirits so no one had any idea that there would be a backlash.

    • @bsquared4604
      @bsquared4604 Рік тому

      @@allisons3663 I disagree. They were swept into the disco backlash which was a whole thing in and of it itself. It was a hate movement by a rock radio DJ. Nothing to do with the falsetto. There were plenty of rock songs in the top 40 at that time and AOR stations. Nobody HAD to listen to them or buy their records. Also, many rock artists were releasing disco records. The Stones, Rod Stewart, Kiss, the Kinks, ELO, Paul McCartney and Wings among them. People not surprisingly were just looking for something to hate. That's why radio stations in the US stopped playing their music. I was around then as I imagine you were too. That's how I remember it.

      @allisons3663 Рік тому

      @@bsquared4604 They were an easy target. Constant radio play and the overexposure gave people a symbol of the backlash movement. Many other artists did disco (even Frank Sinatra), but The Bee Gees were so popular and when you reach the peak, someone always wants to tear you down. The falsetto just added fuel to that simmering fire. Rockers in the midwest didn't appreciate singing in higher registers. Even ardent fans complained that it became too much on the Spirits album.
