It is an amazing story, and i can see why they kept it secret for so long, the leaders does like soldiers to be friends with the enemy.
But what your father did was an amazing act of valor and courage, as mentioned in the video i am sure he would have been executed if he had been reported for aiding the enemy, i hope this story will live in our memories for a long long time.

When Stigler took off, he initially saw an easy target that would secure him his Iron Cross. As he came up behind the bomber, he hesitated on firing because the tail gunner wasn't shooting at him. Getting closer, he saw the gunner was slumped over and dead, and seeing how damaged the plane was, it was a miracle she was still flying. His squadron commander in North Africa said that if he caught any of his men shooting at a man in a parachute, he'd kill them himself. Stigler, seeing how this plane was limping, equated it to the crew's parachute and he refused to fire. At first, he motioned for Charlie to land in Europe, and upon refusal, motioned to turn north to neutral Sweden. When Charlie didn't do that, Franz decided to remain in formation with the bomber to keep the coastal AA guns from shooting at it. It wasn't common, but not so rare that the Germans would fly captured B17s with escort to be taken apart and looked over, so the AA crews would be a lot less likely to shoot at them if Franz was there. Once over the Channel, Franz broke off after a salute and returned to his airfield.

What the video doesn't show, is that Sabaton took the time to personally meet with the Stigler family at that concert. Franz Stigler's commander had told him that if they ever shot at a man in a parachute, he would shoot them himself. Franz felt that shooting a plane so badly damaged, and unable to fight back, was akin to that. 'Honor in the Sky'. If he had shot it down, that would have given Franz enough points for Germany's Iron Cross award. 'Said goodbye to the cross he deserved'.
Charlie took Franz to a reunion, Franz felt out of place and thought he shouldn't be there. Charlie told him that everyone there was family to the men he spared.
Another song with an animated story video, and one of my favorite Sabaton songs overall, is "Night Witches".

that commander was, iirc, Adolf Galland. i read his biography, and those were his actual word. "If I ever see one of you shooting at a pilot on a 'chute, I'll get into my plane and shoot you out of the sky myself."

    “To save another enemy”
Reminds me of this true story. The only German soldier ever to get a memorial made by the Americans
Friedrich Lengfeld died at 23 years old to save the life of an American soldier badly wounded in a minefield in 1944.
Friedrich told his men to cease fire and let the Americans come get him. But they never did, an hour went by, and he decided to go try save the American soldier. With a medic team behind. He got close, but stepped on a mine himself and died at the hospital later on.
His country would shame him for this act of putting his life at danger for the enemy, but the Americans gave respect.
“Deeds, not words” is written on his headstone and I think it also applies here too. There was no words spoken, only deeds.

After “ye olde pub” had landed back in England, awards were to be given to the crew but once high command heard of how a German pilot had saved an enemy, they instantly covered up any such story. In the case of Franz, he never said a word about what happened after he landed back in Europe. If he had said anything, it meant punishment or death…
Skipping ahead, when Charlie found out about Franz, the German air magazine reported Franz to the German government who called him a traitor. His neighbors in Canada obviously shunned him because of his affiliation with the nazis.
But as Franz had always said, “you would never understand”

Earlier that day, Stigler had already shot down a B-17, when he responded to this aircraft, he felt dishonor if he shot it down. He risked his life 2 times I believe because the B-17 did not shoot at him and when the B-17 refused his offer to land safely and be prisoners of war in Germany he had to escort the plane so Coastal Gun Batteries wouldn't shoot seeing the German fighter.

The German anti air ground gunners, the world best at the time didn't shoot the old pub, because they didn't wanted to shoot one of their own with stigler flying in between them. They were taught if they ever got cough shooting down someone using a parachute tu get out their own general would shoot them. Franz looked at this plain as if it was a crew on parachutes.

Another very strong animated STORY video is _Night_ _Witches,_ and another music video to watch is _1916._ With the latter, watch at least the start of the post-song section, which includes the historic detail; whether you keep watching through the credits depends on how much you are enjoying the playing at that point. There are so many little details in this video that aren't really touched on by the song or the narrator. I really reccomend watching the Sabaton History Channel episode for this one, and not even that one tells all the details. Like others have said, Franz was told never to shoot at a man in a parachute, and took that to mean this badly damaged bomber plane as well. If he had shot it down he would have earned the Iron Cross, since it was based on number on planes shot down and a bomber counted as three planes, the exact number he was missing to earn the medal. The Germans on the ground seeing Franz flying alongside the bomber, would have assumed he was escoring a captured plane. It wasn't entirely unheard of for enemy planes to go down in German occupied territory, and then be flown elsewhere by German pilots. To prevent their pilots from getting shot down by friendly fire, German planes would fly escort next to them. In the video when Franz signals Charlie to follow him, he is pointing towards Sweden. Since we were neutral in the war, sometimes damaged planes belonging to the Allies would emergency land in Sweden. If I remember correctyly there was something like 150 planes where the crew survived, or mostly survived, by the end of the war (I don't think those 150 include the ones that crashed and where everyone were killed). I wonder how many more stories like Franz and Charlies there were during the war, not just in the air.
