You dont have to do this to yourself. We want the energetic and passionate Konstantin back :) Almost like we saw the light flicker out in your eyes in this one.
Next time you do a cheap wine tasting, add in one really high-end bottle so you have a surprise to look forward to. Plus it would be interesting to see whether the high-end wine tastes even better than it normally would next to the supermarket wine.
I would LOVE to see a video where you discuss the price of wines and the price they are sold in restaurants and the process of wine service that enhances the drinking experience and explaining the reasons behind paying a premium for wines in a restaurant. I know this isn’t exactly your usual style of video but I would love to hear your discussion on the topic and maybe a breakdown of some famous restaurants wine lists!! Thank you! ❤
Thanks for the video! I would love if Leon would sneak 1 or 2 great wines into the tasting without telling you - just to find out if you are slightly negative biased towards Lidl or Aldi etc.
As the „Weinmensch“ at an Edeka-group, this was one of the most entertaining videos of you so far. I laughed out loud quite some times! 😂 Your summary was what I tell my customers all the time, you get what you pay for. I love to guess along with you and was right at 5 wines. The SB at the start was a real wtf moment… 😂 Due to your sensations, I was at Chardonnay aswell. Keep up this format!
Chianti Riservas are usually very low quality, it is completely different from Chianti Classico Riserva which can be at the level of Brunello. While the Kaiken costs almost 15 euro, so not that cheap.
For a long time I didn't take Lidl wines seriously, until I read a review of some rosé wines (including Markus Schneider, Knipser and Metzger) in the Süddeutsche Zeitung...and the most convincing wine was the Monalie Côtes de Provence rosé from Lidl - which would potentially be a real bargain. And yes, it is indeed a beautiful wine, a real lucky punch for the terrace.
In Estonia LIDL has very few wines they sell, usually all of them are sweet/semi-sweet, so if I can find a dry wine, I might buy it. And this one time I did, it was a Reich riesling and it was drinkable.
There's nothing in this video about Lidl-like wines that was not known before, but it was so entertaining to watch Konstantin's bravery in figuring them all out. 😀
Mainly for the UK audience... You should read The Best Wines in supermarkets by Ned Halley, Ned is witty and sarcastic. This is a great read, every year he's a best seller. He gives an overview of the main grapes and explain how the market evolved and then he goes through what he thinks it's good quality in supermarkets. Well, none of them were from Lidl in his list of 30wines of 2023.
Kaiken is quite well known. Strange name for an Argentinian wine because it sounds more Japanese to my ears. For all your Swiss viewers: Denner has an unbeatable offer: Carpineto from Tuscany. They sell Chianti Classico and Vino Nobile.
I think there's great value to be had in supermarkets in France, e.g. during the foire aux vins, but hard discounters like Lidl is probably not where it is. It's probably better if you tried stuff you sampled from supermarkets under specific pricepoints e.g. (like 10, 15, 20, 30, 50) so that you don't have to go through the 5€ bottles collection of Lidl.
As Argentinian I'm happy to see a Kaiken wine there (solid winery overall), but they should have picked something from Chile too they make some pretty good Cabernet and Sauvignon Blanc for very affordable prices. Cheers!
The Lidl selection of wine is quite different here in France. AFAIK none of those wines is available here. We have, of course, mainly French wines. At their recent Foire aux Vins, I did manage to pick up some Morgon and Chiroubles at
As I live in Sweden and we have an government controlled monopoly, we cannot buy wine at Lidl. But i still find these videos entertaining so keep em´coming! It was quite some time since you did a deep dive on a special grape variety from different countries? I would also like to hear your thoughts about white wines from Rhone. I think they offer great value but are under represented in the market. What do you think?
My nearest Lidl is 500 miles or about 800 km away. Lidl had plans a few years ago to open stores in Florida, and even bought some land on which to build stores, but it’s never happened. For now it’s just Aldi for that sort of thing.
When I lived in Denmark Lidl was my go to supermarket (which tells you a lot about Danish supermarkets). The value and quality was really good for pretty much everything. Except for wine.
On the one hand you are a brave, brave person to taste these wines, on the other hand I think I saw you die a little during the tasting...... Over the last five years I have bought two wines at Lidl: 2018 Pillitteiri Vidal Icewine 2020 Deidesheimer Riesling Selection from Deidesheimer Weinmanufaktur Both well worth the money, but certainly not in the category "far less then 10 bucks". I don't have lots of money to buy wines but I rather drink few wines of great quality then a lot at wine at less quality - I like to enjoy my wines.
I just opened a bottle of Cremant de Loire from Lidl. Not that bad, I enjoy it more than a Prosecco, it has some dough notes to it that I think you picked up as brioche. Nothing spectacular but as I don't drink that much wine I think this is a good wine for 3,5 euros the bottle.
Lidl have the Agramont at 90 points and the Chianti at 92 on their websites, i have always felt they were over rating their wines, now have better feel for how much. its always good to get a second opinion and also see something here i have actually drunk, I have had a few bottles of the Agramont and it does the job.
Konstantin, I have been watching your videos for the past few days and having a great time. I'm from Madeira, so I grew up close to wine traditions, whether it was harvesting, making wine, or tasting. That being said, further learning from you has been a fun and appreciated experience. Keep going strong :) Thank you kindly, Luís
Hahaha. Had a good laugh as a South African from the Western Cape and a wine lover on no 1. On the colour and your taste description I pegged it as a Sb right away. Wine from grapes across the region suffers from that averaging and we tend to call that “Stellenbosch standard”. You have it 100 percent right! They are ok to drink but a bit boring. There are very interesting SB’s though from the Elim region and of course my home town where you find the Hemel en Aarde Valley. Thanks so much for the videos Konstantin. Your passion and excitement matches that of my family. We also taste for the puzzle and the novelty and not just for prestige or price. In fact my youngest son aspires to be a Wine Master. He’s advanced as far as WSET3 in theory so far and works on a ship as a Sommelier where he is getting good exposure to European wines. I also love that when you do German wines we get to hear the correct pronunciations!
Hey Konstantin, what about tasting Metro wines? Many smaller, less established restaurants use them and from my point of view there are some acceptable entry level wines among them. Ofc, they also sell higher end wines, but to continue the series you might want to take a look at the cheaper ones. Cheers!
I do woodworking and a favorite wood of mine is quarter sawn white oak. I find chipped wines taste like they have oak sawdust and sap in them, a taste that is unbalanced and overwhelming, like chewing twigs.
Kaiken make some good wines... Restaurants here in Brazil use it as a simple served by glass table wine. It has enough structure to pair with a good steak. The other ones are simple low quality wines.
“Do I want to spend an evening with something boring just to have something in my glass…”. That’s a quote to remember. Interesting, I also find some of these cheaper wines unrecognizable.
Kaiken is always "shining" in those kinds of tastings. Los Chacayes is hallowed ground in Mendoza, but they make accessible stuff anywhere. I learned not to search for anything in this price point outside of Argentina, Chile, Douro, Alentejo, Rioja and Ribera del Duero. Sometimes Cotes du Rhone can deliver there, but not frequently. Oh, and Carrau in Uruguay do a nice and really cheap Tannat, which is a small miracle.
*Not all Lidl sells wine. In Sweden and maybe other Nordic Lidls they don't sell wine (not Denmark). Sweden only sell wine in Governments stores, in Sweden it is called Systembolaget.
Konstantin, when I rate wines and give my final score on them, I take into account how they hold to their varietal standards. I would like to know your opinion on this please.
I actually like you go through these cheap wines, as indeed a lot of consumers buy wine in the supermarket. I know it's bit of torture for your refined senses. )) I think for it's price the Chianti Reserva is not bad at all. Kaiken is decent too. In the past they had a nice Australian Shiraz for 2.99 euro, nothing deep or complex but decent and fruity. Unfortunately that idea bbq-wine wine became a big hit and after one year it was not available anymore. Maybe the buying price got too high for a budgetshop like Lidl.
Dont agree with the negative comments I enjoy videos such as this to mix things up, with more wines like the regular folks drink. Also impressive that you often can pick a variety and origin even for these cheap commercial bottlings. Maybe try to get some up-end bottles from Lidl too, I suppose they would have that too…
Hi Konstantin! First of all, let me commend you for you resilience in keeping the tasting through all 8 wines :). I actually bought a sparkling white wine in Portuguese Lidl the other day (for mimosas) and I totally agree with what you say - BORING!!!! Not even the orange juice made it minimally fun. Not to repeat...
I have two top faves from Lidl. One is from the Spanish Lidls, a Navarra Crianza 'Mezquiriz'. It was 2016, bought in May 2021. I was so knocked out by bang-for-buck [+/- €2.40] I bought 24 botttles - all but one on the shelf, which I handed to a guy watching me fill my trolley saying, "You gotta try this, hombre". Sadly, not stocked in the Lidls in Normandy. But when Lidl in Normandy has a wine event they stock a Colombard-Sauvingnon from Cote de Gascogne, aptly named 'Confindence.'. This is a fab apero wine. I won't go into wine-speak about it but just point anyone who sees it in its direction, to give it a go. And it goes ... When the wine events happen, this wine is always 'Buy 4, get 6', working out to about €2.35/bottle. Sadly, Lidl in Normandy don't stock an equivalent bargain-but-fab red.
I was wondering if you have any access to Majestic Wine products? For the ones who don’t know, it’s the UK’s biggest wine merchant. They have their own brand called Definiton. I tried the Albarino definiton that was advertised as the best value for the money, and I wasn’t blown away. I’d be interested to see what an MW thinks about those wines.
Shame they didn't choose some of the seasonal wines they get in... those are really where you occasionally get the value in Lidl... Tokaji, Furmint, Greco di Tufo, Chateauneuf Du Pape, Fiano... but just going through the standard/cheap stuff isn't going enlighten anyone.
These videos are fun and obviously quite popular. I do, however, always wonder if instead of sampling new world, Italian, Spanish, and French wines you can get at German discount supermarkets what it would like like if you did a series of 10eur or less wines from Italian, Spanish, French supermarkets (purchased from supermarkets in those countries and not in Germany). 🍇 🍾
You didn’t look like you were enjoying yourself. If you want to discuss cheap wines, get your team to offer a selection of good value €10 wine to inform the masses! But I appreciate your reasoning and as always thanks for posting 😊
I enjoy these videos! I probably buy 10 bottles a year a Lidl in the HOPE of finding a gem! I have to say i did enjoy their recioto di soave and have since bought two more! Yesterday's random purchase was a Tokaji Harslevelu at £9.99 which has a "91 point" rating. I doubt it will be anywhere near that but never tried dry Tokaji so fun to try....
Again, good job.Always enjoy your comments on any wine. When will you get round to Brazilian wines and why not Chinese? both countries bound to come on the map soon. All the best
Long-time viewer, first time commenting. Thank you for your videos, I've really enjoyed them over the years. I would love to see more videos on how to pick out a wine to age. Especially how that my differ for say 10 vs 20 vs 30 years.
I find on average Aldi wines are far easier to hide good or hidden gem wines. And the price difference isn’t really there. Lidl, especially in the past year, I felt their quality has sunk a lot. Ultimately if I have to test 5 bottles to find one good one, I’ll stop taking chances and just explore Aldi wines instead for the everyday wine
Blind tasting bottles under $10 is brutal. There is just the hope that it tastes like what it says it is and it is not flawed. That's all I can hope for and if it drinks well, that is a bonus.
I quite like the Agramont Garnacha so what do I know about wine? 😃. Lidl had a deliciously rich Nero D'Avola last year in the run up to Christmas here in the UK but sadly no longer stocked.
Last October I bought wine at a Paris Lidl, in the 11e, my first purchase of anything in France. I could probably pull out the picture of what I thought would a decent wine at for US standards a very low price. A Bourgogne Hautes Cotes de Beaune. It was laughable; indeed I did laugh at the glass when I opened it in the apartment. So thanks Lidl, for making me laugh.
My own suggestion for Lidl: If you find a producer that can supply a very nice wine at a good value, but only 8,000 bottles of it, buy it! Stock as many stores as you're able to, and stock other stores with different wines from other smaller producers. I don't see a logistical problem with it. Large chain stores often carry different local products at their various locations, like apples from a local orchard.
This was hilarious! Being one of the‘people’, I certainly feel your pain. Good job, Leon. I’ll bet you enjoyed watching master suffer as much as I. Hahaha.
I wonder if u have some wine about 5-6 euros and u really drink those for the evening for example. Do u have any if these cheaper but really fine wines?
Yo, I don’t buy wine from Lidl since here in Finland we have the monopoly (from which I don’t buy anything either, since working in the field provides me more than I need).
I imagine that a Master of wine like you is not gonna drink LIDL wine. Personally in the UK I find that if you don't want to spend much LIDL is usually the best value compare to other supermarket. The worst though is those whites with lack of acidity 😳
If such bland wines even get ratings in the 80s, it would be interesting to know, which wines there exist in the 50s (or even lower). Are wines in this range even sold e.g. in Germany?
Hi Leon, how about putting the occasional Pirate bottle in Konstantins tastings. Not everytime of course, because than he would ecpecting it. We gotta challenge him a little more I think😉
To alter your own quote a little bit: „Do I want to spend more than 20 minutes listening to Konstantin discussing boring wines or would I rather prefer when he discusses something really exciting?“. My preference is clear. Please! Pick exciting topics/wines. Note: Exciting is not equal to expensive!
When he started talking about ghosts and that he was "just left with a cold feeling where it touched you," I laughed pretty hard. But I'm not rushing out to Lidl anytime soon.
Lydl serves a purpose as all supermarkets do but what worries me is that young people drink this and are turned off wine for life. No wonder wine sales are down world wide and kids are drinking cocktails and sweet alco pops. I don’t think cheap wine was this bad 40 years ago…. It probably was.
True, K.B. seemed dissatisfied and was actually pretty transparent that he didn’t even enjoy the tasting 🤣, but as a world-renowned wine expert, who wouldn’t be disappointed with this lineup a wine!? I still found the information informative and fun. I think he was descriptive and still objective. It’s episodes like this that remind me K.B. is willing to inform a range of people and is not especially motivated to produce content for the niche viewer. He seems genuinely fixed in informing people around the world with a wide range of wine interests, experiences, and budget.
I would like to invite you at Weinland - Sibiu(Hermanstadt) in Transylvania next year to really taste our wines. No vampires or ghosts, though. 🙃 Cheers! 🥂Daniel Duica, WSET Certified Wine Educator.
Servus Konstantin aus Tschechien. In Tschechien produziert man viele Weine. Ich habe eine Idee, dass du auch tschechische Weine probieren kannst. Mein Tip für beste tschechische Weingüter: Horák(Rosé oder rot), Weingut Baloun, Lobkowicz. Viele Grüße aus Prag Jakub
You dont have to do this to yourself. We want the energetic and passionate Konstantin back :) Almost like we saw the light flicker out in your eyes in this one.
Agree. Was mildly depressing honestly
haha 😂 I was thinking the same
IDK why Baum sometimes leans on this type of content. I don't think the demographic speaks to it, but I could be wrong.
It was fun
I would really like it if he found a hidden gem in a discounter, so I'm still curious for this content. But I agree, this video was a bit depressing😅
The excitement in your eyes while tasting, speaks for itself.
Next time you do a cheap wine tasting, add in one really high-end bottle so you have a surprise to look forward to. Plus it would be interesting to see whether the high-end wine tastes even better than it normally would next to the supermarket wine.

Thanks for the video!
I would love if Leon would sneak 1 or 2 great wines into the tasting without telling you - just to find out if you are slightly negative biased towards Lidl or Aldi etc.
This is by far the saddest video on this channel, poor Konstantin. He did it for us, guys
I've never had wine from Lidl, but I did enjoy this episode. Being honest about lower quality wines helps to appreciate good wines even more. 😀
Every now and again I’ll drink a cheap shit wine just to remind myself how good good wine is 😂
My condolences Konstantin. Sorry to see you go through this tasting. But good consumer information.
As the „Weinmensch“ at an Edeka-group, this was one of the most entertaining videos of you so far. I laughed out loud quite some times! 😂
Your summary was what I tell my customers all the time, you get what you pay for.
Lidl is so hot and miss here in the UK. Sometimes it’s great, I there times it’s overpriced crap; it just depends what they’re stocking at the time.
In Estonia LIDL has very few wines they sell, usually all of them are sweet/semi-sweet, so if I can find a dry wine, I might buy it. And this one time I did, it was a Reich riesling and it was drinkable.
Kannst du mal ein Video machen über die besten Rotweine, die du getestet hast und die bis 20 Euro kosten?
Chianti Riserva TROCKEN 😅 definitely made for the italian market 😂
OMG!
There's nothing in this video about Lidl-like wines that was not known before, but it was so entertaining to watch Konstantin's bravery in figuring them all out. 😀
Hide the pain with sarcasm😂Loved it! Still waiting for a supermarket wine to excite you! Keep searching!

Kaiken is quite well known. Strange name for an Argentinian wine because it sounds more Japanese to my ears. For all your Swiss viewers: Denner has an unbeatable offer: Carpineto from Tuscany. They sell Chianti Classico and Vino Nobile.
Not strange. Kaikén (or Caiquén) is a Patagonian goose. Cheers
@@gonzalocalvo2101 Gracias por la clarificación.
As a follow up: could you do a "best value for money" - edition e.g. with Jaques wines or Vivino wines
Can you review aldi and Lidl’s “premium” wines in the €10+ bracket? Some of them are surprisingly good.
Let's face it, for a mass-produced wine "non-offensive" is a very important hurdle to clear. Everything beyond that is icing on the cake.

The 2017 Rioja reserva which in the UK is 6.79 GBP is an great wine for the price and very old school Rioja with lots of fruit and oak in balance .

When I lived in Denmark Lidl was my go to supermarket (which tells you a lot about Danish supermarkets). The value and quality was really good for pretty much everything. Except for wine.
Kannst du mir Marken empfehlen für gute Weinkühlschränke? Ich hatte an Klarstein gedacht oder Caso, aber ich hab da leider null Ahnung von.
On the one hand you are a brave, brave person to taste these wines, on the other hand I think I saw you die a little during the tasting......
Over the last five years I have bought two wines at Lidl:

I have enjoyed the neo crianza ribera del duero, but I struggle to find proper wine at lidl. Had hoped you’d found something. Thanks for the effort.
I dont purchase from LIDL but of all the wines you sampled, I'd likely try the Kaiken as it appears to be the best of the lot.

Fun video. Next time you visit the US, you should do this for Costco 👍🏼
You really blew my mind with the toasted oak chips! That’s why I love all your videos, I can learn so much stuff from them

DOMENIILE OSTROV - BLACK ANGUS (CS) DOC 2020, a good wine in limited edition in Lidl Romania for 5 euro.
Would love to see a video where you get LIDL wines bought in a LIDL in Portugal for example. It would be quite different!
I like Kaiken brand. Have tried it in Hong Kong. Now I'm living in France. Will try check Lidl here.
I quite like the Agramont Garnacha so what do I know about wine? 😃. Lidl had a deliciously rich Nero D'Avola last year in the run up to Christmas here in the UK but sadly no longer stocked.
I don't shop at Lidl if I can avoid it, let alone wine. That said, I'd give the Kaiken a try in a lamb stew.
Picked up 2 bottles of Mantrús for about 15 euro. Really liked those
Would hve been nice to have the Markus Molitor Edition Wines from Lidl in the Blind Tasting. Starten from 5.99€ on
Last October I bought wine at a Paris Lidl, in the 11e, my first purchase of anything in France. I could probably pull out the picture of what I thought would a decent wine at for US standards a very low price. A Bourgogne Hautes Cotes de Beaune. It was laughable; indeed I did laugh at the glass when I opened it in the apartment. So thanks Lidl, for making me laugh.
Great content! I would like to see a wine tasting of different wines from Jacques' Weindepot and your opinion on it.
Good suggestion but I'm glad they don't, that would snatch up a lot of good value wine from us, the wine aficionados buying from small producers.
@@TheMV1992 Good point!
This was hilarious! Being one of the‘people’, I certainly feel your pain. Good job, Leon. I’ll bet you enjoyed watching master suffer as much as I. Hahaha.
So its a 100 point scoring system, but an average wine that is not recommended still gets 75?
I wonder if u have some wine about 5-6 euros and u really drink those for the evening for example. Do u have any if these cheaper but really fine wines?
How could a Chianti reserva DOCG be that bad ? 😢
We don't have a Lidl; this channel normally gives you the tools to widen your repertoire. It's the first time I was not entertained
Fav Lidl wine is the white Sentier du Périgord £6.99 UK
"DER KLEINE FRITZ" mit Etikett eines Hasen von Lidl für 8€ ist sehr gut
Seems they'd be better sold as even cheaper box wines...
James Suckling even awarded the Kaiken with 92 points.
If such bland wines even get ratings in the 80s, it would be interesting to know, which wines there exist in the 50s (or even lower). Are wines in this range even sold e.g. in Germany?
No score for the Aussie Chardonnay?
Hi Leon, how about putting the occasional Pirate bottle in Konstantins tastings. Not everytime of course, because than he would ecpecting it. We gotta challenge him a little more I think😉
To alter your own quote a little bit: „Do I want to spend more than 20 minutes listening to Konstantin discussing boring wines or would I rather prefer when he discusses something really exciting?“. My preference is clear. Please! Pick exciting topics/wines. Note: Exciting is not equal to expensive!
1:35 “my team has bought” so not just Leon anymore, you have a whole team now? You are becoming a big youtuber now!
What you think is good wine is good wine... but I still wish people thought about it just a little bit more
True, K.B. seemed dissatisfied and was actually pretty transparent that he didn’t even enjoy the tasting 🤣, but as a world-renowned wine expert, who wouldn’t be disappointed with this lineup a wine!? I still found the information informative and fun. I think he was descriptive and still objective. It’s episodes like this that remind me K.B. is willing to inform a range of people and is not especially motivated to produce content for the niche viewer. He seems genuinely fixed in informing people around the world with a wide range of wine interests, experiences, and budget.
I would like to invite you at Weinland - Sibiu(Hermanstadt) in Transylvania next year to really taste our wines. No vampires or ghosts, though. 🙃 Cheers! 🥂Daniel Duica, WSET Certified Wine Educator.
Oh no we're back at LIDL!
Servus Konstantin aus Tschechien.
In Tschechien produziert man viele
Weine. Ich habe eine Idee, dass du auch tschechische Weine probieren kannst. Mein Tip für beste tschechische Weingüter: Horák(Rosé oder rot), Weingut Baloun, Lobkowicz.
Viele Grüße aus Prag
