Great video and straight to the point! What license should be paid/bought for interpolations?
Thank you for watching! You would need a mechanical license (also sometimes called a cover license).

Thank you ma for this beautiful content.
I have a question; What is the difference between Sampling, Interpolation, Cover And Remix.
You’re welcome! A cover is when you record a song already recorded by another Artist. A remix is when you take a recording and perhaps flip the beat etc…
Can you show an actual interpolation vs sampling if possible show an example of both so I can see and hear the difference.
I used an example in the video of the sample... the interpolation is where someone actually records it over. From the example used, I don’t have one with someone recording it over.
What if I recreated a loop from a famous song as a template. But dissected it taking out some notes and changing their pitches to create a different melody from that. Would that be illegal ?
New works are inspired and created from current works all the time. If you recreate from the loop you are inspired to create from, you need to make absolutely sure that the difference in your new work is so unique that it doesn’t sound anything like the original, or you’ll have a lawsuit on your hands. To be safe, if you feel the original is recognizable, then get a derivative license to create from the original.
Thank you Dr. Watkins! Question. If I use the melody of a famous song, but I change the lyrics to my own, is that also considered interpolation?
Juan Carlos Almonte Amarante, no that’s considered a derivative work and because you are using the full melody. In the sense of replay yes but out of context.
I registered my very first song all thanks to you! Ive also put a memo with it to BMI that its my first time and to contact me about any error I possibly made. I havent hear any thing yet soo🤞and thank you sooo much!

Hello, where do I start to request a music license? For example, I have samples and remixes that I want to get cleared.
Easy Song Licensing
Hello Ma'am, Is there a one stop shop to get all types of samples cleared at? Thank you in advance.
Depending on the complexity of the request, there may not be but you can get close. Check out Easy Song Licensing. They are a great service!
@@TheMusicBusinessMadeEasy Thank you for the info.

When Pac did "High Speed" He interpolated a Curtis Mayfield song with a mandolin.
Thanks beautiful
You’re welcome 😊#blush
So, if someone interprets some of the same lyrics of another song in their new song is called interpolation and not sampling?
No, that’s called a derivative work and you must have permission to do any of that.
But then, if two songs share the same chords, is that interpolation? Cause that would be crazy! I mean, there’s thousands of songs using the same exact chords.
Or does this only apply to melodies? I’m super confused! Especially since this whole Olivia Rodrigo scandal.
Chords themselves are not copyrightable. It’s how you use those chords in the context of a song. The way the chords were used in this example, as soon as you hear it you know the song. I can use those exact same chords, but the rhythm and other elements, how it’s used is not interpolation. You have to use it the exact same way, no changes, for it to be called interpolation. Don’t overthink it.
If I wanna use the entire beat without changing anything and sing my own lyrics, is that sampling also?
That's creating a derivative work. You would have to get permission from the copyright owner to change the song entirely into something else. You would also need a master use license if you sample the beat instead of re-recording it.
@@TheMusicBusinessMadeEasy Please ma'am how do I go about getting the permission for derivative work? Most third parties focus more on clearing Cover songs and sampling, can you point me to any third party that's into derivative work clearing? Thank you in advance
