The Continuing Story of The Unicorn, written by George Millar.
Video by Jennifer Fahrni.
The Unicorn song, • The Irish Rovers - The... which was a last minute add to the Irish Rovers 2nd album, left us all with a tear or two, plus the unanswered question, “Whatever happened to the Unicorns when the ark left them stranded on the shore?”
Since that first big hit, the band returned to the charts 15 more times with other songs, nevertheless, the magic of The Unicorn remains. To pay appropriate tribute on its Gold Anniversary, the Rovers release “The Unicorn, The Continuing Story” CD & LP. It includes all new recordings plus finally, the sequel to The Unicorn song, which answers the question of the last fifty years. This music video will also tell the story.
The Rovers thank the World Wildlife Fund and wildlife cinematographer, Adam Ravetch for assisting in the production of this video.
Album is available as CD or 12" VINYL LP goo.gl/dEXCny

For 60 years, I've cried over the fate of the unicorns. Yay! Narwhals!
We've always known the unicorns are magical creatures, so they adapted, becoming the narwhals. So like you, I've always believed they were never really gone, it's just nice to know they are still with us. May it always be so.
I feel the same used to cry everytime i.heard the univorn song
My heart soars.....my eyes actually filled with tears to see those "silly unicorns" swimming free, What I wouldn't give to see them from the shore!
OMG! This is FANTASTIC!! For 60 years this song has saddened me! But the Narwal! I LOVE THIS!!🥰🥹
For my 5th birthday my parents took me to see you guys in concert. I got my record signed and everything. Then, on my 21st birthday, my parents got me tickets to see you again. I was raised on your music, so was my son, and my granddaughter will as well.
Thanks for following us all these years.
i wish i had the same luck
@@TheIrishRovers American here..i play the Unicorn song every morning in the car when i take my Shih Tzu for a walk down by a lake. Every morning he looks at me like oh no..not this song! He sits in my lap looking out the window. When the chorus part play i shake him up and down and sing along ..you got your green alligators..it wears on his nerves. But i think he gets the joke. ..lol..Thanks for the song guys! I will drink a shot of Irish whiskey tonight in honor of any passing members of the band...but i hope you guys are all strong and rocking with the Unicorn!
How fun. The unicorn is the Latin classification for a rhino, the one and two horned rhino. 🙂
What a gorgeously creative way to portray God's care for his beloved creatures that he transformed the mischievous unicorns into narwhales. A great foreshadowing of his purpose to transform his freshly people into his heavenly spiritual bride.
George Millar's Irish blood is so strong that his hair will always stay red no matter how much he ages!
We go back with the Rovers 49 years with their appearance in Cleveland, Ohio. My son turned 13 on that trip and they sang Happy Birthday in the middle of their show. He never forgot it, nor did I. Saw them in Newberry, SC a few years ago and told the story!!
My grandma who passed away 3 years ago showed me the prequel to this song and it's a song I go back to and listen when I miss her terribly.
I had "The Unicorn" on a 45 (or maybe a 78) when I was a little kid. This song was on the charts in the US the year I was born. I'm thankful for the "Continuing Story of The Unicorn"
Grew up listening to the original song with my mother and now I get to share it and this fun sequel with my daughters 😊 Thank you!
P. S. My 13 year old and I listened to this for the first time a d she yelled me "see I told you unicorns were real!"
We told you how the unicorns were stranded on the shore
As the ark sailed away forevermore
But have you heard the tale how they changed and swam away
And they're splishing and a-splashing to this day?
It rained forty days, it rained forty nights
Till the waters covered everything in sight
The unicorns were frightened, and crying out in vain
"Heaven help us from the pouring rain!"
Swimming free, swimming free, swimming fancy-free
Swimming free, swimming free in mystic revelry
Swimming free, swimming free, majestic as can be
The narwhal is the rarest in the deep blue sea
When God saw the ark drifting on the tide
He said "Are my unicorns inside?"
But Noah said "Oh Lord, it grieves my heart full sore!
They were playing, and they wouldn't come on board!"
Swimming free, swimming free, swimming fancy-free
Swimming free, swimming free in mystic revelry
Swimming free, swimming free, majestic as can be
The narwhal is the rarest in the deep blue sea
The Lord loved his unicorns, and heard their plaintive cries
Saying "I can't bear to leave them there to die!
So here's what I'll do, for this wasn't meant to be:
I will make their new command the deep blue sea!"
Swimming free, swimming free, swimming fancy-free
Swimming free, swimming free in mystic revelry
Swimming free, swimming free, majestic as can be
The narwhal is the rarest in the deep blue sea
He changed them into narwhals to escape the raging flow
And they swam away up to the ice and snow
The Arctic is their home, where they frolic wild and free
And they're called the unicorns of the sea
Swimming free, swimming free, swimming fancy-free
Swimming free, swimming free in mystic revelry
Swimming free, swimming free, majestic as can be
The narwhal is the rarest in the deep blue sea
Swimming free, swimming free, swimming fancy-free
Swimming free, swimming free in mystic revelry
Swimming free, swimming free, majestic as can be
The narwhal is the rarest in the deep blue sea
Swimming free, swimming free, swimming fancy-free
Swimming free, swimming free in mystic revelry
Swimming free, swimming free, majestic as can be
The narwhal is the rarest in the deep blue sea
The narwhal is the rarest in the deep blue sea
We can forget that the Unicorns turned into Narhwals now we all know about the Narhwals
Thank you, Darius!
Beautiful
Yay, unicorn whales!
I had never known about the sequel to The Unicorn, so this was a very pleasant surprise. Thank you so much.
Enchanting & magical just like our magnificent 🦄 Unicorns who are very much here with us on the planet bringing in joy, harmony and grace💫🌈💝👍
I listened to the Rovers when I was a little girl in Newfoundland, Canada. Just loved them and the Unicorn Song. So great to hear a continuation of the story! It's great!
I feel the same way! What part of the isle are you from?
This is beautiful. God Bless You all with a long and beautiful life..
God Bless
As A little girl, I heard these people, and I loved them from the first time I ever heard them, and now I can hear it again
I always loved "The Unicorn" but it broke my heart, too. Thank you for this!
May have been awhile but they saved our unicorns lol. Thank you Irish Rovers.
This makes me unreasonably happy to know the unicorns of my childhood got a happy ending after all. Used to sing the original song with my dad on long car trips, it holds a special place in my heart. I wish I could call him up now to share this with him 🥲❤️
So, the narwhal is to the unicorn as what the komodo is to the dragon. Maybe someday we will earn God's favor again and our beloved mythological beasties will return. There is much they could teach us about life and co-existing. Thanks for the song and the ray of hope, Rovers.
Did not expect to cry from this, lol
Thank you. My dad raised me listening to this band and many other Scottish and irish folk bands. I've known the unicorn song my whole life.
This sequel just touches me deep and I love it so much
Even today I can see in my mind their vinyl at home. ❣
Absolutely love. What would I do without the Irish Rovers .
Cry a lot more! Sing, smile and laugh a LOT less
@Boom Diggaty spoilsport...😪
@Boom Diggaty can be not just go along with some Irish misty dreams and music? Lighten up, let even that 1st smile crack your visage!😉🙃😘
There is always an Irish Rover somewhere, especially on You Tube. Any Irish music is great for cooking and dancing around the kitchen. ;) This Swimming Free is lovely also.
I love a happy ending. Who doesn't? I have loved the original song since I was a small child, when it first came out; so glad you lads gave the story this sequel. Thank you for all the years of music! Happy St. Patrick's Day!
What a beautiful fairy tale!!
Love the Irish Rovers I remember watching their show on the CBC on Sunday Nights! Anyone else?
okay this makes it a bit better but I'm still crying -- thank you rovers ♡
Beautiful. I believe in unicorns🦄
I feel like the greatest burden of grief has finally been lifted from my soul. I loved the original song as a kid but it broke my heart. Now, I can finally know peace ❤🤣
What a nice follow-up to a classic. I like it!
I think The Irish Rovers is the main reason I love the music of Ireland so much. I hope the neighbours can't hear me belting out "whisky in the jar" or "Wild Mountain Thyme". The Unicorn has always been my favourite though. Well that and Puff the Magic Dragon!
I love it I remember the original unicorn song from my childhood I loved it and love it still
How wonderful to watch the graceful narwhals splashing freely in the sea.
Just forwarded both songs to my daughter. She’s in charge of VBS.
It would make a
Great idea for VBS.
Disobedience, God's mercy, Transformation to a new being in Christ.
I remember the Unicorn song from childhood. Just found the part 2. ❤️🦄❤️
Now little kids won’t cry thanks for this Irish rovers
Amazing as always. Can’t believe this is the first time hearing this.
Thank you Irish Rovers - Awesome!!!
Can I ever see you guys playing I’m 27 I heard this as a little girl and it was my favorite song 😢
Always felt sad for the unicorns, now this is a consolation! Ty.
This is good. My theory is if this would have been released before the end of 45s and top 40 radio, this would have been a hit. These days, you have to either accidently come across a song like this or someone has to tell you about it. I just happened to be listening songs from the 60s. I remembered the Unicorn and listened to it and I saw a comment from the Irish rovvers that there's a sequel coming out.
Well... 500 years ago... some "unicorn horns" were sold for a quite a lot of money. It is known today that those horns were/are horns of narwhales.
Yeah sadly true I just heard the unicorn song for the first time on the radio and fell in love with it and I came onto the UA-cam and of course it recommended the sequel so not too bad eh.
Unicorn is a rhino. It is the Latin word for the one and two horned rhino.
I can remember as a child back in the early 70s watching these guys television show! I was fascinated by their music! It's hard to believe that 50 years later I'm still fascinated with them.
Yippeeeee the rest of the story. Thank you
Gotta love these guys!
The original song was very important in my family for a few of us, including my grandmother and one cousin...I now just came across this song!! My grandma is gone, God rest her soul, but I can share this with my very important cousin and I most certainly will! Bless you all!
I've been a fan for nearly 60 years, have most of their albums, never heard this song until now :D Love it
I'm not crying. You are!
Wow THANKS FOR THE UPDATE. BEEN SAD ABOUT THOSE POOR UNICORNS MY WHOLE LIFE. ALWAYS A DEBATE IN THE PUB ABOUT THE CRUELTY OF THE ORIGINAL.... so this is exactly what was needed! BLESS YOU.
I love the rest of the story! Bless you boys! Been a fan since I was a kid and your show was on in the Detroit area. I have seen you 3 times - more than any other band and I have some of your music.
Listening to this songs of yours...it just feels so right...Love ya.
I cant believe that more people dont know them they are an amazing band
They aren't on mainstream radio. Mist people don't explore beyond what s at their fingertips - and popular with their (mainstream) peers... :-/
Culture in the mainstream is dead. If you want to find the true nuggets - you've gotta look

I love unicorns and loved both songs- never see a unicorn and this one!
Its nice that the unicorn had a nice end, or should I say transformation
Thank you for all the dedication to a fine and noble craft.
Troubadours that have stood like cliffs against the sea of time. As a child you all made me laugh during the stint on prime time, as a teenager/young adult parting to all those hits the bridged both generations and cultures, now a middle aged grandfather again a fine piece. You guys stills impress and inspire me. Keep on, keeping on.
Exactly. Well said.
Bravo. (Bravo the Irish Rovers and bravo to your post to them as well.)
Keeping the tradition alive. ^___^
Love from Japan!!
I love how they did this is fantastic then there's the Irish Rovers they would come up with a great idea fantastic now the kids in the world won't be so sad
A wonderful song that is both a joy to listen to, and easy to sing along with. Another example of why the Irish Rovers are one of my favorite groups. Thanks for sharing the chord progressions as well as I love to play these songs when it's just me and the dogs in the house.
I wanted to hear a song called the Irish Rover (an old song from the 50s maybe, not the 1 by the Pogues
Some of the lyrics "He whistled and sang till the Greenwood rang and he won the heart of the lady".
Has anyone else ever heard it? Google hasn't
@@carrolhoward6785 It’s the gypsy rover
Each have one horn, both are spelled with seven letters. Coincidence? I think not!
don't forget seven is Gods favorite number
Always love your songs. been listening for 45years.
I always wondered what happened to them!
Fantastic! I love happy endings!
This song is perfect in every way. I love you guys!
My daughter loves this
beautiful, never expected this, well done rovers
I just love you guys. Music makes me feel so happy. Guess right about what they say. The nicest people on God's green earth. God bless thank you.

@@TheIrishRovers I honestly started crying and couldn't finish the song. I had to come back later once I composed myself. I will be sharing it with my children who grew up listening to me sing about the sad unicorns who were left behind. You gentlemen are true channels of the source, singing the stories that need to be told. Thank you for sharing your selves. i really love your music.
