I think you guys are probably the best to know that a What if HP series would require so much understanding of all the nooks and cranny of the original books and that no matter what, some part of the fandom will disagree and nitpick every details of the alternate story that it would terrify directors. For the same reasons, such a show would probably never be approved.

Even that was scrutinized by some of the fanbase.
For that reason, it may be best written and directed by J and Ben Carlin themselves. Any other would have to at least have them on as consultants to make sure they are not breaking canon
Some fans will smear the series apriori. Still, the idea of a whatif is great. Just we houldn.t expect to please everyone. Let it be a bold experiment
@@Bradferd333I wouldn't say Ben n J would be the best for writing it, as they break canon a fair bit in their what ifs and theory vids.
Take the Filch is a Poltergeist theory... They mention how Filch has "always been at the school as he's the opposite Poltergeist of Peeves" is roughly what they said in the video.
Yet in the books Molly specifically states that there was a previous caretaker Apolleon Pringle, meaning Filch could never have been at the school before hand and Minerva specifically states Filch has been trying to get rid of Peeves for "a quarter of a century" meaning he's like only been at the school for at least 25 yrs.
I saw them on tour and was so happy to have my question answered by a fellow fan about why the comment section is called the "towel section:" apparently in the beginning of the channel they joked about how they only get filmed from the waist up and could be wearing towels from the waist down, and the comment section visually is where those towels would be. Thanks, Sam, I think! I watched *all* the HP content and a lot of the others and never found that.
THANK you for posting this. I’ve been hoping for them to explain it. They’ve joked somewhat recently about how people can’t conceive of them actually saying “towel section” without explaining _why_ they’re saying “towel section”. Not everybody will see this comment, but I’m glad I did. My mind can stop theorizing now😌

I would like a fairly true to book series, but where they add to it. If they went through fan theories, and then the author weighed in on what's canon or not, and then they add those to the story. That way for existing fans there would be the element of excitement because you don't know what theory is going to make it, but they don't have to deviate from the original story lines

Secret, hidden option B: sequel that follows the next generation, Harry + Ginny, Ron + Hermione, and Lupin + Tonx (RIP) kids. We could still get peeks of some of our favorite characters. We could find out if Ron + Hermione are working through their marital issues. We could see what McGonagall is like as a Head Mistress and how the Ministry of Magic is functioning after all the things that occurred in the original books.

I've always thought doing a 1-on-1 adaptation again is the most boring thing they could do, specially since the original movies, even if they're not flawless, are so iconic. I'd love this idea because they would be bringing excitment back to a known story. Not gonna happen but we can always dream.
If any of the original cast come back to play characters I’ll be beyond stoked. Imagine Rupert Grint as Arthur Weasley, or Dan Radcliffe as James, and this might seem out of nowhere but I’d like to see Tom Felton as Snape

a series of anthology stories would be great! stories we didnt see in the movies, like voldermorts full past, the marauders + snapes full story, creation of hogwarts etc
Honestly i would love an exact book recreation with the exception that wolfstar is canon and tonks and remus don’t end up together (oh, and harry’s kids have different names. “albus severus” 😭) i like the idea of an animated show so that we could get a closer recreation to how everything is described in the books

I have rewatched your What If Harry Was In Slytherin videos so many times, and every time I am just so thrilled to hear each part of it!
The Scott pilgrim tv show already did this what if type concept, and it went really well!

I would love a series like that. I imagine the perfect adaptation with some “filler” flashback episodes so we could get a real deep dive in things the movies or books didn’t go through. A bit like the last of us. So season 3 we get a full length marauders episode and again in 5. In 7 we get the full story of Regulus and Kreacher. There could be founders episodes and it would all be woven in the main story. This way there are so many new stories to be explored.

What about Ron or Harry sorted into Hufflepuff?
Or they include side plots and storylines to tell alongside the original story. Or they could have whole episodes or even seasons that are backstory like a Founders season or a Mauraders season.

I neither expect, nor want a page by page following of the books. The story arc of a book is much different than that of a movie, or even a mini-series. (If they were to try that with Order of the Phoenix, it would take three series to complete!). What I do hope for is all the details contained in the books that couldn’t fit in the time frame of a film, and accurate portrayals of all the characters.
What I want instead of the Golden Trio, is more like the Golden Group. Harry, Hermione, Ron, and Neville; the way it should've been. But I want to take it one step further. I want them all to be in different houses. Harry in Slytherin, Ron in Gryffindor, Hermione in Ravenclaw, and Neville in Hufflepuff. Four kids from four different houses coming together to with a common goal; friendship.
Please just learn that the two best books 3 & 6 need to steer completely clear of the fails that the movies proved to be. Get in the pensive and show us the memories. I can't read those chapters in book six enough.

Imagine if the flashbacks and paintings are animated.
Lbh, there is 100% space for a show like that. However, I know for a fact, that I don't need an unexpected twist to enjoy the TV show. I'm still reading the books regularly, even though I almost know them by heart. As a matter of fact, I'm listening to this podcast, that goes through them chapter by chapter.
I want that faithful adaptation, that includes EVERYTHING from the books, and maybe more. And I also want the Fred & George TV show, that takes us through their entire schooltime and shows us ALL their pranks.
There is enough time, money and request for a bunch of new HP shows - so why not do ALL of them?
And yeah, maybe Maggi Smith or Daniel Radcliff seem perfect atm, but we also never saw anyone else try. Maybe someone better is out there? We can't know, until we tried.
I only want this TV show if at least a large number few of thee original cast that are still alive all come back for it again!:)
I am a bit afraid of the TV series. Despite it having possibly 8-10 hours of screen time, tv shows tend to mess around a lot and having more time doesn't mean they can just show everything . They still need to cull and cut the parts, and sadly I'm sure they will add stuff that never even happened in the books, so even less in book stuff will be made.

I want to know more about Harry Potter World outside of school. What would you use his magic for. And that's actually one reason why I like Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. But I'm not a big fan of the early 20th century. Something more modern. Doesn't even have to be about Harry and his crew.
I think the series could learn a lot from "The Chosen". They took a story we all know (the bible) and made it a really interesting series.
Has to be animated. Old school like Disney Robin Hood. The one with the fox but people.

Bring back the nonesense and make Harry a werewolf. Literally so random but would so interesting from this “he’s revered” but also part of a hated community. And SO much stuff happens on a full moon in the series. So much would change and it would be great lol.
as someone writing a Slytherin Harry fic I think fanfic is the right place for what-ifs. I want the show to be canon, with plotholes stitched up

Honestly, I think this is a worse idea. Although I get the issues with the comparisons to the movies, there would be even more comparisons with the character in the original story, people would either want characters to be their fanfic version or complain about it not being true to the original characters. Just remember what the existing "what if" HP story is: cursed child. I don't want another "Cedric was a death eater" for the sake of surprising fans and giving us something unexpected.
The best for me would be a series about the marauders, the founders, or something like this. But I guess that with fantastic beast being the failure it was, they "need" a safer choice (of course I don't know if that's the reason, but I think it makes sense haha)
But, what could you do with the marauders or the founders? Like, they would be doing what we knew was going to happen
@@Buttonjira We know what happens, but not how it happens. That's why I think it would be so good: we have the basis of the story, but we have never actually seen what would happen and, in the case of the founders, we don't have any strong feelings or attachment to the characters and with a series we would have that. They could explore how the friendship of Gryffindor and Slytherin ended, how Lilly and James got together after the rocky start (I also think it would be great since the major memory we see of James in the books is Snape's, which I don't think pictures the best/most accurate image of him), their adventures to turn into animals, etc.
I'll add my voice to the chorus wishing for an animated series -- I'm actually disinterested in a live-action show.

I get a kick out of how much they want to believe he'd be in Slytherin. While he had that potential as well, I still think he was more Gryffindor, thus him being called a "true" Gryffindor. However, if this show was ever made I'd be fine with him being Slytherin to change things up. I just don't agree that he would have been Slytherin if Harry hadn't ran into Draco and/or been told that particular line by Hagrid.

Harry Potter has had his time. Even if people wanted a remake (movies or TV), nobody would accept anyone but Emma Watson a Hermione. We'd have to wait 11 years to have her cloned and matured. Before the Half Wit Prince hit the theaters I was saying we need a live action TV series about the next generation of wizards. Maybe title it Hogwarts the Next Generation.

If they were going to tell a different story, I'd rather it was a completely different one centered on completely different characters like they at least *tried* to do with the Fantastic Beasts movies. I'm personally not really interested in AU fanfics (like Marvel's What If) or even anthology series (like American Horror Story). Seeing characters I know and love not quite being themselves is a little disconcerting and sad for me.
For the reboot series I just hope they show some good slytherines. At the very least show them helping at the end of the Battle of Hogwarts. Maybe turn the battle in the good guys favor.
No. This shouldn’t happen. Make it a true and page accurate retelling. An animated “What If” series would be cool as a separate thing. But no, don’t replace her vision with this,
We already have two versions of the Harry Potter main story. Why can't we have something brand new instead? Maybe we could have something from the adult world, or from after the main series was done. It would be cool if we could have the trio teaching at Hogwarts as grownups, with a new threat that unfolds for instance. Maybe it's just me.
I would like for this series to be more accurate, more in depth so we actually have some character development, and be more realistic. Image being harry potter and realistaclly what stresses and situations that brings on. Is shouldnt gloss over it and make it more pg, because the situation wasn't very pg to begin with

I don't want a new adaptation of the books or a What If series. I want a show about the Hogwarts founders or a Marauders series.
I think a What-if series would be cool, BUT I think if there was a change like that to the story with the upcoming series, would garner major back lash. It would be like making a live action reboot of the Marvel Infiniti saga as a gender swapping character study. It wouldn't go over very well. Although I think both concepts are cool, I don't think the rest of the world, i.e., Fandom, would look kindly on this kind of change up at this time. I think some day, but not right now. Just MHO.

I honestly think one of the biggest challenges is going to be that the visual iconography is so attached to the films. If you go on a tour in England or go to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter at the Universal Parks, all of those visuals come from the films so an entirely new design of characters and locations could be very difficult for people to reconcile in their minds.

What annoys me is how book inaccurate movie Hogwarts is. So many scenes from the books don’t make any logical sense with the movie Hogwarts layout. I wish they would use the book accurate rendition of Hogwarts LukeGKi on Wordpress created. It’s the most accurate/amazing attention to details straight from the books. He has a model blueprints and even retraces how the characters moved in several scenes through Hogwarts.
Yeah, would they even be able to change the castle layout (which isn't book accurate anyway) or use something other than Hedwig's theme
That's why they would have a better chance to have it as an animated show, makes it easier to change details and have it be accepted.
Think of all the stuff that would be in there: Quidditch, Fred and George throwing snowballs at Voldemort’s face in year one, Ron being an actual character, the horror that is the Gaunts right before Tom kills the Riddle family, we can see the devastation caused by Meropi’s love potion right before we see it happen to Ron, and many more dark times that happened at Hogwarts during Harry’s tenure

Tbh, I would like for the series to be animated. That way it can be differentiated from from the movies while being able to accomplish more.
I totally agree! No worries about aging and it would be so refreshing. They've never done anything like that with HP. I'd be happy to get some comics at this point.
The issue is that if they do it animated, it'll likely be taken as a kids show, versus something that multiple age ranges are looking forward to, even though obviously it's still going to be mostly a younger audience, because starting out with the show the actors are younger.
But being animated would limit the audience base even more

If they wanted to make a series to milk the franchise further they should've went for a Founders or Marauders story.
I feel like what they should do is add things. They are working with the author of Harry Potter herself, they can make new cannon for us to see. We could have extra marauders scenes, a flashback for the four founders, other common rooms. And everything is cannon. I hope they do, without making any drastic changes to the books or ruining the franchise.
Edit: and maybe the romance will be better written? Those were definitely the weakest parts of the books, in my opinion. As long as they don't change the couples, though.
That's a good point! They could also give us scenes we normally can't see in the books because Harry is not in them, e.g. Snape returning to Voldy for the first time. Just make use of the fact that you are not tied to Harry's POV.

@@mienfu9824 There are a few scenes without Harry. Spinners End, Malfoy Manor, The Riddle House. The last one Harry has an inkling of, in a dream, but the first two are entirely without him. I think those are the only ones though.
That's exactly what I'm hoping for. Expansion rather than contradiction.
Or even Fred and George scenes going off on there adventures, scenes of what’s going on while Harry is knocked out in the hospital wing, stuff like that I think would add to the story without changing too much or giving away the mysteries ahead of time
I think an A plot that’s a really good adaptation and a B plot that’s original and doesn’t mess with the canon and of the A plot would be a great way of doing it

My only problem with this is depending on the year, there are already A, B, C, and even D plots in the story. Like Goblet has Triwixard Tournament, SPEW, Harry’s popularity waning, etc.
I want them to make an effort to introduce students earlier. Luna can't become friends with Harry and Ron too soon, but she knows Hermoine and can still just exist in the school. That way, instead of students seeming to appear out of nowhere, it will seem more organic.
She doesn’t know Hermione. She knows Ginny cause they’re the same age and have some classes together.
I don’t think you need to reinvent the story to make it new or captivating, I think it’s perfectly possible to do this from following storylines of other characters closer. For example, Draco through the Half Blood Prince as he’s working on a way to break in the death eaters, or the many mischievous ongoings of the Weasley twins, etc. There can be captivating extensions to the cannon without breaking the cannon.
The books will always be better, but I'm looking forward to this.

Watch the His Dark Materials show after reading the books. I'd argue the show might actually be better,it kept mostly faithful but got to fix one major story flaw and put more focus on certain characters.

I think they should do a series where it focuses on James and the marauders at hogwarts as well as lily and snape it would add more background to the maurauders as lily and snape had the princes tale Whitchurch added a bit but it would be cool if they did that instead of focusing on Harry again.

Dumbledore's or even Voldemort's pov would be fascinating. They do so much interesting and important stuff off page
here’s what I personally want to se from the tv series I want to see everything that happened at the time but was not shown or told previously. For example I want to see Quirrell struggle with voldemort in his head, talking to him and planning how to get through fluffy. I also want to see Ginny start to write in her diary and be tranced by voldemort. I feel like most people have seen the movies and if you want deeper story you can just read the books but I want to know more what was happening at the time. And if the new show will just be scene by scene from the books i will be disappointed because we don’t need that I can just read the books!!😂😂
I agree and disagree, I'd be fine with them doing scene by scene just what the book says, because watching a show is a completly different experience than reading a book, at least for me, when I read there are no images, no face on characters, just a story being narrated to my mind with my voice, so I would apreciate the imagery to accompany it.
But, if done right (and I remark, RIGHT, because now a days, we have so many fck ups in shows like The Witcher, Star Wars or LOTR), I would also love to see a bit more, and have more inside on things that happen "off page". So at the end, I would love what you say, but I don't trust them to make it right, and would expect them to butcher the name of Harry Potter, like they did in so many shows the past few years.
They should take the His Dark Materials route. Put extra emphasis on underexplored storylines,show other perspectives, add storylines so things tie together better and even change story flaws that the books may have. Seriously, read the His Dark Materials books then watch the show and you will understand completely what I mean.
I don't care if it's live action or animated. As long as the actors are good, I don't care that they're different from the movie cast. The most important thing is that the story gets told correctly, which the movies did not do.

I think the biggest problem will be the casting. The actors who portrayed most if not all of the roles are so iconic, how will you replace them? Who will replace Hagrid? Umbridge? Lockhart? Snape? McGonagall? Crouch Junior, Lupin, Sirius, and so on and on. I don't have much faith in HBO and I foresee this being another case of "let's change as much as we can because we know better" like so many adaptations go these days.

In the movie I felt like Professor Snape cares for Harry. In the book I felt like Professor Snape despise his Harry.
Because we are seeing Snape from Harry's perspective. Snape actually believes he's just giving Harry some tough love because he knows the impossible task that Dumbledore has for him.

How about a What if Dumbledore never became good? Him and Grindlewald probably became the leaders of not just the wizarding world but the entire world.
We don't even have the full story with the current canon... Idk if they'll ever finish the Fantastic Beasts movie.
A "What If" series will feel fan-made. You're taking a series and saying 'what if *blank' that's basically 90% of fan-made content; Theories, fan versions, fan-made levels in video games, concepts for crossovers, etc. are all based on 'what if *blank'.
Plus, making a "What If" series, would rob the community of everything YOU literally patronized the films for leaving out.
And if you wanted to include the things the films left out, it would only make sense to the book fans, and hardcore fans.
While a revamp would target both film fans who love the medium, and book fans who love the story.
More Hufflepuff, Slytherin and Ravenclaw representation. And more Fred and George, at least a side plot for each season.
I'll forever wish for an adult gritty drama following an up and coming auror fighting dark wizards, encountering dark magic, solving mysteries, etc. I just want a new story in the wizarding world

I hate the argument that we need surprises as if people don’t still rewatch movies they’ve seen or re read books. If the story is good people will like it. If you start arbitrarily adding mystery where there was none you’ll make people mad. Example: Wheel of Time ruining the dragon reborn by trying to play it as a mystery and effectively doubling the potential candidates where in the books it’s abundantly clear almost immediately. In the effort to create mystery for new viewers they fundamentally ruined the entire magic system history and lore.
I groaned and rolled my eyes a bit once actors were brought into the discussion. Even a what if series or whatever would still need to have a more or less brand new casting so that would still lead to the 'who played which character better' debate.
The Harry Potter story’s kinda boring tough after the first time as it runs of mystery with no comedy and repetative action but great world building wich is why we want more from this world
A great example of this is the Scott Pilgrim anime. It explores the story in a different light, but keeps all of the characters that we know and love. Not to mention it was well received within the fanbase by both comic and movie fans.
I could see episode 1 of the new series playing exactly like the movie, beat from beat. Then it ends with the Sorting Hat announcing "Slytherin!"
I personally would stop watching at that point, and would never agree that the show exists inside the HP universe, if you're going to change the original material to that point, just go and make a new story from scratch, and don't proffit from a name that already exists, and end up most likely butchering that name, like it happened to The Witcher, Star Wars, or Lord of the Rings.

I have another pitch: in the movies, they cut a lot. But at the same time, even in the books, new characters were always introduced when they were relevant.
I want a show where this time they add stuff, starting with ALL background characters being there from the beginning. I want Luna being introduced from year 2, Cho in the background from year 1. Trelawney should be there from the beginning. More lessons could be featured.
At the end of the last movie Lilly says to Harry "we never left" crating a good opportunity for the new series to show the story but by the eyes of the dead people, they can even create characters and possibility of adding new scenes where Harry is not present
What they really need to do is finish the Fantasy beasts movies, then they have you guys run a founders series, then a series of one off episodes from everywhere in the time line, maybe a Marauders series or books. Or to be honest all of these things could be done in book form but I don't think RKR would ever do that. And then when you have the world built out enough, you do a what if series
My main worry is if they'll keep the aesthetic of the world as how it was. Hogwarts, diagon alley, even uncle Vernon's house. I just can't imagine them being different.
They probbaly will. If they don't, then they'll have redo all the Harry Potter theme parks since those are based off the movie sets

I think a series about characters that are not Harry himself is a better way to get a good audience. Like, who would not be down for an episodic series where in one episode we get a lot of Fred and Georges mischiefs, then one about Luna in her first three years, one about Snapes lifa as a death eater and so on and so forth.
It has so many things, themes and characters that are under explored and can really do well with a bit of spotlight.
Oh, and an Episode of Lockheart stealing a story. That one is...

What I would really like is a third person perspective on the Wizarding world. I don't want to see just Harry's story told from his experience again. I want to see Harry's role in it, and also Fred and George hijinks, and also conversations between Snape and Dumbledore before Harry finds them out. I want to see Ginny get her letter. I want to see Remus and Tonks's relationship. I want to see Hagrid court the giants. I want to see Sirius in Azkaban before he breaks out. I want to see missions of the Order of the Phoenix. I want to see the story, but the whole story, from everyone's point of view, and understand the whole of the Wizarding world going through this period of turmoil.
Who do you think should be the composer of the tv series? John Williams' score is iconic, but I don't think he'd be able to do it again. Some thoughts I had are some one who has already composer for the Wizarding World such as Alexandre Desplat or James Newton Howard, some who has done other iconic fantasy scores such as Howard Shore or Ramin Djwadi, or someone like Michael Giacchino who has done scores to franchises that previously had John Williams scores.
