I found you yesterday, and can only say HOW GRATEFUL I am that I found you! I learned to sew in 1974 because I have a large bust, and it was either figure out how to make the clothing fit, or wear a tent (as a 14-year-old!). Knits and UA-cam didn't exist, so Sewing With Nancy and the pivot and slide method was how I learned to make my clothes fit. From the backstitching to the redrawing of the sleeve, your tutorial was wonderful! (And watching you sew on the old Singer is pure delight. People seem to always make the mistake of thinking they need a fabulous sewing machine to "up their game", when the old vintage machines sew a better seam that lasts forever. Thank you! Thank you!!! You have MADE my week! (and the world has really tried to make this an ugly week, so I am grateful for the distraction!).

@@evelynreyes9328 Hello Evelyn. It depends if I make a trial garment. If the fabric is expensive, the pattern looks tricky, or if pattern is from a company I haven’t used previously I will make a muslin. Hope that helps

Lovely blouse. I enjoyed the sew along. Many times I have stopped sewing a garment because it didn't fit or whatever and then later ( sometimes a very long time!) did what I could to fix it. You did a great job

Just discovered your channel. Really enjoy your realistic and natural narration. So sick of phony, jokey you tubers who never get to the point but think they are "cute". Your finished top looks classy and the color is lovely. I abandon many garments after spending hours trying to make all the professional sewing touches. You give me the strength to sit back and 🍷 wine a bit and then do what needs to be done. Thankyou, I look forward to the next tutorials.
Sometimes in a sewing project you just need to walk away and let those pieces think about what they have done. Have a glass of wine, take a walk, and then go back and conquer. :)
I've been trying to decide about tracing patterns or not. I appreciate your perspective on why you don't. I'm 52 and agree with you, I'm the same size/shape I've been for a while now. I think I'll agree with you and not waste the time and especially the money on tracing. I have so many pdf patterns as it is and will be easy enough to print out what I need.

Hello. I discovered your channel a few weeks ago and am learning so much. A huge thank you for this video in particular. I attempted this pattern shortly after I got back into sewing. I didn't have your knowledge or patience and it ended up in the bin. I may try it again, but may not. Although it looks great on you, it took a lot of effort to get to that point and there are so many other lovely patterns. Off to check out another of your makes. 👍

Agree with you completely about tracing patterns. I also do not us PDF. I didn’t like drawing, cut, and paste when I was a child and that hasn’t changed. What a waste of time.

Oh my, I agree that blouse turned out beautiful but so many extra pieces and steps. I've had this pattern in my sewing room for a while now but kind of apprehensive to start it now lol
It IS a pretty blouse. Just was a lot more involved than I was ready for that day :) But if you go into it knowing all the steps and pieces beforehand you can probably have a better experience than I did :)
Just recently I came across the Nancy Zieman video on YT re: pattern fitting, so when you started doing this with the sleeve pattern pieces and mentioned her name, I knew exactly what you were going to do. Yes, God bless you Nancy!

When I sew interfacing in I sew the hem wrong side to tacky side then I can press the interfacing and the edge has been finished. My facings are so neat and it saves me a step

Hi Marie - I'd love to see you make it again but "your way" where you eliminate the unnecessary pieces so the same overall shape and style is made but with the minimum number of pieces and any unnecessary steps of the process removed. (If you've already done that and I haven't realised please let me know which video it was? I'm working my way through them all but haven't got there yet!) :-) I love the extra roll at the end where you draft your new sleeve pattern - excellent little tutorial all by itself. Thank you.

I also bought this pattern, because I liked the look, and it had cup sizes, and it was on sale. But I also noticed the numerous pattern pieces, and (naturally) thought there was some purpose. Very useful to know that the purpose may be debatable. 😊Thank you!

Beautiful blouse. I love your fabric. I agree that this pattern has many seams that really cannot be seen. I don’t mind a lot of pieces if the results are nice. And this is a nice result. This pattern was the first thing I sewed in 2020 after a long hiatus from sewing and I had a good result, except I couldn’t wrap my head around the tab piece. I did make it work and I think it looks good. I also had bicep issues with these narrow sleeves. My left arm is bigger than my right and it’s snug but not overly noticeable. I want to make this blouse again. Thank you for the sleeve adjustment tutorial at the end of this video. I will definitely use it.
Hi Lori! I think if I was doing it again I would do a different neck lap technique, and merge the side from and center front into one piece with a dart, and the same with the back pieces, and I already redid the sleeves... but other than that :) Thanks for watching!!
I enjoy your videos, thanks! Two thoughts on cutting out patterns versus tracing: (1) Much of the debate about tracing I've seen has more to do with vintage tissue patterns that are old, like 50+ years old, not so much modern Big 3 patterns. People advocate for tracing those delicate old patterns so the patterns can live on and be passed along relatively intact as historical documents. (2) I personally trace even modern patterns because I always need to make lots of adjustments: shoulder slope, shoulder width, shorten back, adjust bust point level, FBA, armscye reshaping. I want to preserve the original pattern in case I need to revert back after making changes that didn't work out. I don't expect any pattern to fit me as is, because it would never happen. I find it easier to do these size adjustments (and the resulting scotch taping) on Swedish tracing paper and gridded paper. Standard pattern tissue rips too easily and warps. Most of the patterns I buy aren't tissue anyway (they are print shop A0 PDFs that I have printed at my local sewing shop on large format white printing paper). Tracing accurately is possible if the paper the pattern is printed on has more "body" than tissue. But if someone can cut pattern pieces straight out of the package and not have to make adjustments to make a well-fitting garment, well...congrats!
And thank you for your great comments! I wanted to tell you that I totally agree about preserving vintage and antique patterns. And I think that it's great that in sewing everyone can develop their own preferences and work their own way. Currently I've become accustomed to altering my patterns using a pivot and slide method and then indicating on my pattern envelope any changes that I've made using that method, so that if I cut it out again I already know what I need to do. But there are so many ways of doing one thing it's amazing. As far as the PDF patterns, I live far from towns and I don't think any place within a couple hours drive has the capability of printing a large pattern. So what I come up with is I have a projector mounted to my ceiling that I can hook up my computer to.oh, It's shining on a wall that I can clip a large piece of tracing paper to. And as long as I make the adjustments to the image that is shining to make sure that it's the right size I can just Trace that onto my paper it works pretty slick. Anyhow thanks for your great comments and thanks for watching.

Lovely make, you did such a good job on each part. Too many patterns are like that, sleeves are not wide enough, I have to make bicep adjustments on most, ugh! Otherwise, I really like the blouse. Nancy did give us some good tutorials on making these adjustments!

Really appreciated the process and honest review! The finished blouse is beautiful. Question: will you need seam allowances where you drew in the new sleeve slit, or will you just turn under? Just wondering.. I often have to adjust the bicep area of patterns. I agree that patterns are drafted too narrow there. Good demonstration of Nancy’s adjustment method. 👍🏻
Really, just making a narrow rolled hem along the edge should be fine. The other option is to cut a strip of fabric about 1 1/4" and sew a continuous lap. But no additional seam allowance should be needed.

wondering why you overlaped pattern pieces by 1.25" and not 5/8th.........I think I missed something !!! Thank you ....I really enjoyed this lesson !!
5/8" x 2, one for each side should match up the stitching lines for both pieces. I hope that makes sense. Picture folding back the seam alliances on both pieces, and then measuring straight across. :)
Fairly new to your channel so I’m trying to catch up on some of your older videos 😅. You and I have similar tastes in patterns 😍👏… some of the videos I have most of the patterns you have sewn so far! 😍 But thank goodness I don’t have this one lol 😅… so without having the pattern to look at I was thinking instead of having to cut out a new sleeve would having shortened the seam allowance on the 2 inseams have worked 🤷♀️? I absolutely love the style of that shirt! I’m going to try and find a similar pattern but without all those pieces. It’s gorgeous on you! Also is it possible to share your pattern haul when you go shopping for patterns? I would love to pick up what you’re going to sew on the channel to follow along! Also do you ever sew indie pattern companies?
I will try to post some of my recent purchases of patterns. It's a little tricky because I buy them because I like them, but I actually might not get around to making them all on the channel. But you never know! I usually don't use indie patterns just a personal preference for me, at least at this point. But thank you so much for watching and hopefully you can follow along soon!

Curious about how you sewed the vent on the re-drawn, one-piece sleeve. Did you create a facing?
No I did not create a facing. I just sliced that vent up to the circle that I drew and then I will either make a narrow rolled hem on the edge of the fabric or I can take a strip of fabric about an inch and a quarter wide and use that to make a continuous lap binding.

I made that but I don't like the way it fits me, my movement is constricted in the arms. Armscye is wrong.

When you serge the seams in advance do you do this with the blade down so that it does not cut off any fabric?
I try not to cut off much 😊 just run at the edge
I found the same issue with the sleeve as well, also I could not understand their instructions for completing the yoke. I will NOT be making this again!

So, I did not make it, BUT I do have a pattern that is the same, and will make a video on it. The problem is that my pattern is from 1993, so I need to search and see if I can find a more recent one with the same design.
How do you get your marks for the dots on the underside of the material ? I never see you transfer the top dots to the underside. Also why do you under stitch on the inside and not on the right side of the garment?
It's been so long since I made that video, I'm guessing that I could see the marks from the right side bleed through a little bit to the wrong side? As for why I understitch on the inside and not the outside on this pattern, I sometimes question why I do everything 😂😂

I'm not completely sure what you mean. But I can tell you that I cut the pattern as printed and serge right on the edge but don't cut any off or at least I try not to.
Yes, that pattern is way too fussy for no good reason. I doubt if I would have finished it. Or, maybe I would have packed it away and come across it a year or two later and finished it then, or turned it into something else.

This may be capt obvious, but why didn't u just measure the sleeve width minus the seam allowance and then measure your arm and see what kind of play u have? I don't know how long u been sewing. I've been a tailor for about 30 yrs now. I look at a pattern and I just remove pieces that I find are overkill or just added work that isn't necessary or isnt going to make a difference to the final garment. Then I mix and match pattern pieces...lol if I'm just designing and draping I don't have to worry about it..lol there are so many times that there is no rhyme or reason to a pattern piece or an instruction. There is just no need to add all that fussy work. I look over a pattern direction before I do anything and see how they are making me construct this garment and make a few notes like we aren't doing step 12 and we are alleviating piece 4. Then I cut my pattern piece apart but don't fuss with cutting all around the lines, I can do that when it's on the fabric. That's just time and cutting twice. If I see a sleeve or a waist or a pant leg or a shoulder that looks a little to small or big, I measure right then so I can correct it now not later. What's the old saying, measure twice cut once..lol don't 2nd guess it just get that tape out, but anyway, just a few cheats that someone might find helpful.😉
Hi there. So one of the things that I'm trying to do is actually follow the pattern is written as closely as possible because I'm trying to demonstrate if the pattern itself needs to be tweaked, so I wanted to sew the sleeve as is, in the beginning. Usually at a glance I can get a pretty good idea if something is going to be fitting my arm or not, and I think I mentioned in the video, that with all of the seam allowances of the three-piece sleeve I just didn't notice it, you know just an error. So you saw how I fixed it and what my game plan is for the future. Thanks for watching. 😊
