I Wii say the tone x is incredible in any loop of any modeler.....i will also say whats even better is the Friedman IRX in the loop. Real tubes. The built in IRS are incredible. String separation feels and sounds exactly like a BE 100 ...good to see you Paul your tones sound massive i want to try this myself 💯

    I %100 agree!
I’m a previous Helix/HX stomp user. I’ve also owned Kemper and Fractal FM3.
The amp models inside the Helix just have this very particular high end fizz and like you say lack low end chunk which you can feel in the chugs. The ToneX is an absolutely game changing pedal I’d even argue it sounds better than Kemper and Fractal. It’s newer capture tech at the end of the day. I sold a lot of gear off for my ToneX it’s such an amazing pedal to pair up with any of the HX products.

@@PaulGlover Aye gonna be pairing it with a couple of expression pedal for the HX Effects (need my wah and whammy effects) and a poweramp just in case I need to go direct into a cab at a gig. No more 12 pedal pedalboard and no more dragging around a heavy tube amp head and cab for me. Everything I'll need on one board. My back will thank me lol.

The helix models are weird if you do any E string chugging. They are washed out. I have no idea how L6 didn’t unveil some type of amp profiling for the helix. The unit otherwise I love but I can’t deal with the weirdness of the amp models. I’ve had 3 and sold them because I love the unit and want to make it work but can’t. All they need is amp capturing and the unit is perfect. They are dropping the ball bad on keeping the Helix relevant when all the need is profiling ability.

The demos I'd seen of the ToneX I really wanted to try it, but I had issues connecting my ToneX to my PC (connecting to Protools) as I already had a scarlet 8i8 interface connected for my amps (via a boss TAE) and apparently the ToneX needs to be the only interface.

Interesting.......I've not run toneX as my interface just conect it like I would an amp. Good to know though.

The helix takes a lot of work and off hand audio knowledge that line 6 doesn’t do a great job in providing to its users regarding tone building when compared with other units. However, once you get it down it’s incredible and its versatility is (imo) unmatched as a modeler . I can see the Tonex filling in the gaps for that making it more usable out the box to fill out or liven each tone further expanding to this by adding profiling capabilities. I have an sy1000 running into my helix (synth tones and pickup emulation) but even without that I’ve found that there are solid ways to fill out your sound, make them sparkly clean or brutally heavy but it does come at the cost of time and a vastly different way of looking at tone building when compared to traditional amps or other units. All in all, I wouldn’t trade my helix for anything now, the unit is a beast but that learning curve is a quite steep.

What do you do with it tone building wise?

What's the best thing to run this into?

Any FRFR powered cab, as they do all of the pre amp, power amp and cabnet modelling. Laney FRFR cabs are the best in my opinion.

Hmm Wonder how the Kemper player would work with helix....
