    This is a medium format sensor. There are no Sony Medium format cameras, yet. The issue will be the lenses of a quality to realise that level of resolution, big glass will be eye wateringly expensive. Ironically a 45mp sensor with pixel shift could give you the same resolution, but outside of very special applications, I don’t know what you would do with it as the eye can’t resolve close to that level.

    • @TechTraveller01
      @TechTraveller01  9 днів тому

      Sony doesn't make medium format cameras yet. The main challenge is finding lenses good enough for that resolution, which will be very expensive. Interestingly, a 45MP sensor with pixel shift can achieve similar results, but for most uses, the eye can't even see that much detail!

    A bit boring , most people view images on smartphones and tablets, or monitors. The eye can’t resolve more than 300dpi , so all those pixels are largely pointless. Typically Sony innovation more must mean better , but doesn’t find any real world benefits for typical ise

      While most people view images on phones and monitors, higher resolution can still improve detail for printing or cropping. More pixels can enhance image quality, especially for professionals.

      @@TechTraveller01it’s technically correct assuming your lens can resolve that level of detail. However the limiting factor is the human eye. The general assumption is that we can’t resolve more than 300 dpi .We also need a viewing distance to properly comprehend what we are seeing. apples retina screen is a case in point, it exceeds human perceptual ability. The crop ability may be a benefit but most agree it’s better to frame the subject correctly and use an appropriate focal length lens than to crop.
      I admire innovation but such resolution really does not offer any obvious benefits in other than exceptional circumstances, and even at that Sonys other high resolution sensors do such a good job.
      I suspect I’m not alone in being skeptical about specs top trumps. Remember there was a thing about minimising the size of calculators. We got the point where you needed a tool just to push the buttons. There is a sweet spot in most engineering. For me it’s between 20mp and 60mp, after that unless you have very bespoke needs with very exceptional requirements there is no every day use reasons to need such resolution

      While it’s easy to imagine extreme specs in the future, current camera technology is still evolving meaningfully. Incremental updates may seem small, but improvements in sensor quality, autofocus, low-light performance, and video capabilities continue to enhance both stills and video results. Numbers like 10,000 megapixels or 50K video may sound impressive, but real-world performance and image quality improvements aren’t just about specs; they involve many factors working together.

    • @TheBigBlueMarble

      Issue #1: Let's just take a look at one of your specs...10k MP. Those uncompressed RAW files would be about 21, 000MG (21GB each). A light day of shooting might produce 200 images. 200 x 21GB gives you 4100GB (4.1TB) for 1 day of shooting.
      Issue #2: Lens technology is much older than digital technology and is progressing at a much slower pace as the laws of physics become an obstacle. It is very unlikely that a lens that is capable of adequately resolving that image would be developed in 20 years.
      Issue #3. I can't imagine a single use case where a photographer would be able to make use of an image at that resolution.

      Sony makes some of the best camera sensors in the world, and brands like PhaseOne, Fujifilm (GFX series), and Hasselblad use them in their high-end cameras. However, it's interesting to note that Sony hasn't used these specific medium-format sensors in its own cameras yet. While Sony does produce excellent full-frame sensors for its Alpha series, it hasn't ventured into making medium-format cameras, even though it supplies the sensors to other brands that do.

      What you suggest is the direction camera manufacturers are going. We can see it already as the MP race slows down, competition is now focusing on other features. The Canon 5DII took a lot of criticism because it did not increase MP count, but greatly improved other things. The general public and average UA-cam commenter are just slow to understand it.

      While more megapixels do result in larger file sizes, they also provide greater detail and flexibility in editing, like cropping without losing quality. With advancements in storage technology and faster processing power, managing larger files is becoming easier.

    When will SONY get the lenses to support it?

    • @TechTraveller01
      @TechTraveller01  11 днів тому

      Sony already has a solid lineup of lenses, but for higher megapixel sensors, like those in medium-format cameras, they might need to develop even more specialized lenses to fully support that level of resolution. It could take time, but given Sony's innovation, it’s likely they'll work on lenses optimized for future high-resolution sensors.

      @@robertc.maxfieldiiphotography It's true that the wide compatibility of lenses can lead to confusion, especially when mixing low-quality and high-quality options. While many brands face similar challenges, Sony's extensive lens lineup can sometimes make it harder to find the best quality, leading to frustrations for users looking for optimal performance.
