    I’m really appreciative of your not-too-technical, yet detailed review of the newest Q3. I’m only a hobbyist. Recently upgraded a giant step from my well loved D Lux 7. To a new Q 3 28mm. Which I only managed to purchase this week. I’m learning so much already. And I’m already LOVING IT!
    But it’s now making me go loopy, wondering if I should have waited for the new 43mm.

    43mm is a "no-way" focal length for me, no matter how good that lens may be and the theory behind it. (It's kind of "in the middle of nowhere", like 50mm.)
    I am a 24mm to 28mm guy, especially when nowadays you can crop images even with in-camera settings and get equivalent "teles" (bigger focal length simulations) without loss of quality with all current super high Mp full frame sensors, while you can't the other way around: getting wider field of view (smaller focal length simulations) with bigger focal length lenses.
    By the way, I have plenty of classic manual cameras + lenses and, as far as my eyes have always told me, the real focus length of human vision is 55mm (in 35mm film format = full frame digital format) and not 50mm (which is slightly smaller in comparison), that's why many manufacturers made that exact focal length lenses instead of (or in addition to) 50mm ones.

      Thanks Derrick, next travel opportunity I will take the 43mm with it, want to get to know it better and try out more things. The lens height on the 43mm is somewhere between 5-10mm longer which then gets compensated by the shorter lens hood on the 43mm Q3.

    Is the IBIS or OIS actually mechanical? Can you hear it when you move the camera around when off? Leica’s marketing material has a curious description as: Visual compensation system for more stable photos & video recordings.
    Wondering if it could be stabilization via software 🤔

    • @mathphotographer
      @mathphotographer  3 місяці тому +1

    • @Biosynchro
      @Biosynchro 3 місяці тому +1

      It makes sense because they tried to give the 28mm lens as much ability as possible for subject-background separation. Personally I don't shoot at apertures that wide. But that's the rationale. The 43mm has much shallower focus than the 28mm. Ideally the 28mm should have been a Noctilux, if you like that kind of shooting.

    The video is quite good. The quality of the Leica Q3 is at a very high level. The resolution is also of good quality. But the frame rate is absolutely disastrous. 15fps without continuous shooting is completely useless. I don't understand it at all. Accordingly, I understand that this old lens is not capable of faster focusing. Which is a real shame. And the eye focus quality is also absolutely dismal. It's a real shame that they already offer such options. It's pointless to have 8k video if the camera can't even focus properly... :-)

    Could we also put this “normal” focal length nonsense to bed? Erwin Putts, who may have known a thing or too, was quite clear that 50mm has nothing to do with eyes. These have a horizontal field of view of c.135 and a vertical field of view of 180 degrees. The 50mm lens is 46.5 degrees. It also has nothing to do with size of the film or sensor. The image projected by the lens is circular for a start and Oscar Barnack used Leica’s existing 42mm lens on the original prototypes. The similarity between the chosen focal length (which is a major determinant of magnification) and the diagonal of 35mm film was a coincidence.

    • @Juz4m
      @Juz4m 3 місяці тому +3

      I think was is considered “normal” is not so much the actual focal length, but rather the perspective of a 50ish mm lens. No squeezing or compressing compared to how our eyes see.

      It would be interesting to see:
      - if there will be square stack nd filter for the new lens shade. It look like there is a metal interior shelf perfect for stack a couple of magnetic filters so finally we could properly do video switching from foto
      - how does perform the 43 lens shade on the 28mm how much vignette and especially in video mode where a crop is applied

    • @mathphotographer
      @mathphotographer  3 місяці тому +3

      Thanks for your comment, appreciate your input and thoughts. Guess we will nevertheless continue to call this a „normal“ focal length since this notion is around for a long time 😊

    @mathphotographer I would like expert Leica user like you let us know, or consider, that Leica Q3 43 do not seems to consent to set up a filter on the lens if you put on the lens hood. As other UA-camr pointed out (references ua-cam.com/video/qxnreg1vcQk/v-deo.htmlsi=zqOC42t9jpfP6LpD ), if you want to switch the lens to macro mode, it seems there's not enough space and if you do this the filter touch the lens hood structure before it's completely extended. If this is correct, did they misproject the lens hood due to the marketing thought that the new lens have to have the same overall dimension of Q3 28 lens, or they simply miss the point? My question is: can we buy a product I think is overpriced like Leica products that seems to be "marketing" for half their prize, as it is also for other best manufacturers, and discover that a so called master of photography manufacturer did not understand or consider the simple fact that if somebody give grace to Leica to buy the Q3 43 want to protect the frontal extremely expensive lens with a filter? My answer is no. I'd like to know yours.
