I agree 100%. But your videos are very, very good. I believe if you were to break down even more popular titles (i.e. Mass Effect, Elder Scrolls) your channel would explode. However, Dishonored is my favorite game that has released over the past couple years. Thanks for these videos
It's great yeah but it's more like "This is the only Dishonored Lore videos on UA-cam" it's enough to make me want to start a channel on it if only I had a damn PC
Revisiting after Death of the Outsider is interesting because you were 100% correct in assessing that the Outsider and the Leviathan were separate creatures, because we learn the Leviathan was the previous incarnation the void had via the Eyeless.
I'd always felt terribly about how the whales were treated in the world of Dishonored. You've exemplified why perfectly. Excellent video and series so far. Keep it up, man.
Yea, they're the most tragic aspect of Dishonored lore. Hopefully part two reveals more about them, and maybe lets them Moby Dick a couple ships as well. Thanks, K!
I can understand them using the whales to power supply dunwall with lots of oil, meat and bones etc to support population, but if they need a energy source they can just use wind turbines or build a hydroelectric dam to power the cities in dristol and would save them alot of trouble and try colonizing pandyssia to expand a australia size continent with abundance of raw mineral resources, fauna and animals to use to make dunwall empire nmore stable and promote growth lol
@@tylersoto7465 In my opinion they do have large scale power plants that use other forms of fuel or the elements, like we see the wind turbines in Karnaca. I think the whale oil is more like a liquid battery used to power smaller or portable devices. In the games we see that most devices powered by oil containers have been recently installed so they needed a quick power solution, perhaps they would get wired to the city's power grid later on. We see that the city has electric lighting and many large devices that are powered from the grid. The oil is most likely just a portable power cell.
Dishonored: The Corroded Man contains info that also is extremely interesting when talking about Whales, more specifically the giant whales at the bottom of the deep sea called Leviathans. In this section you find that the main enemy of the book, Zhukov, a man in possession of the Outsider's magic, is in search of a Leviathan. He finds that one is buried beneath the Boyle Mansion, in a century old chamber. This chamber contains the bones of a great Leviathan, a massive whale. The Leviathan's bones, particularly the teeth, contain incredible amounts of magical energy. Enough to allow Zhukov to use a black mirror to see, and potentially pass, through time itself.
I felt awful while playing dishonored at the whale slaughterhouse. There are documents there saying that killing whales made people mad, corrupted their minds, altered them into something else. Whales are truly magical in the Dishonored world.
I don't think these point to the whales or their ancestors being from the void. I think like the outsider the whale has been exploited, hurt, killed by humans
Screams of the whales in the tainted deep Maimed and impaled in their pain they sleep The faded and frail and the laneways weep Broken souls in mourning…
WOW, what an incredible series. Too bad there is almost none Dishonored Lore videos on YT like these. Really enjoyed it from the music to the commentary. Well Done
The way I always understood the connection between the whales and the Outsider (although none of this really has any proof) was that the whales, or their ancestors at least, at some point long ago in the past were "touched" by the Void. How or why, I have no idea. But this has left the whales with a connection to the Void. How much they can use this connection I have no idea, as we don't really get to hear if the whales have any real magical powers they can use. Now, over 4000 years ago there was another city in the place Dunwall would be on later. In this city they knew of the Void, and possibly worshipped it. They figured out that the Whales have some sort of connection to the Void, and sought to get that power. They made the first bone charms. But, these charms weren't what they were looking for, and so they decided to do something else: To create a connection between a human and the Void. What exactly they did, or how, is unknown, but they were able to do what they set out to do, with the Outsider being the end result. At this point I have no idea what happened, but I'm guessing the Outsider brought the end of the city, either out of revenge or just out of fun. Either way, that old city was lost. At some point the Outsider began to contact the humans again, and someone at some point figured out that by inscribing the mark of the Outsider on the whale charms they find in the ruins of the old city, they could either empower or concentrate the powers within the charms. So all in all, yes. The Outsider and the Whales have no direct connection. They are similar, that is beings with a connection to the Void, but that's where the similarities end. It is this similarity however, that makes the bone charms possible. Again, this is just what I imagined to have happened as I read through the books and lore of the game. Possible there's some Lore I never learned that contradicts this, but this idea isn't really meant to be a theory anyways, more like a "what-if".
I've started to replay this series and I'm glad to find someone who is as into the lore as I am. It's kind of rare to see anyone who goes so far as to read the in-game books and flavor text even though most of the time that's some of the most interesting stuff in the games. All games. Dishonored is great for the amount of lore and world building it has going on. I hope at some point we might get a new game in the series. Maybe see the creation of a new Outsider or just get plopped into a world that is familiar and alien alike with a completely new Outsider and books scattered in the world tell us about the Empire of the isles falling, collapsing, and a new civilization coming up from its ashes. But I'm also fine with the series staying put where it is.
Amazing! Thank you for this. Dishonored Lore has been shoved to the side by many, me included. I'm glad you could shed some light upon it and masterfully so. I'm excited for more should you choose to present it.
No, thank you. I'm happy you dug it. And yea, Dishonored doesn't get much love. I guess it's cuz the narrative is pretty rote. Which is a shame, because the mythology to the world is dope, as you can attest.
Interesting video series. Incidentally, the whale slaughterhouse section of this game momentarily made me consider becoming a vegetarian. I didn’t do it, but it’s testament to the impact and delivery that I even thought about it!
One connection the whales could have is that their sounds could be connected to the void. The music boxes show sound/music can interact or impact the void. Whale calls could have this very affect. Infact that could be where the idea for the music boxes came from. Their are multiple times characters mention how they enjoy or are captivated by the whales song or lullaby
The Overseers music box could be seen as the antithesis of the whales singing and moaning. The overseers box negates the effects of the black magic. Maybe the songs of the whales have a reverse effect and bring about the influence of the void. Many people are attracted to bone charms and whale bones due to their void energy. The sound that these charms make are akin to a whale song if you think about it. Some people, even certain overseers worship these artifacts in secrecy. This affinity to the void's "sound" and ever looming prescence in the world that the humans have, seems very strange. It's as if the void and all it's representatives calls people to it.
Thorough and well researched, I enjoyed your series. And I was delighted and captivated by your voice and narration. I could listen to you speak all night :#)
I'm playing through Dishonored again before I pick up the second one, and I found this channel. I could comment on how great this lore series is, but everyone else has already don't that for me. So instead I'll just say that your voice is absolutely _perfect_ for this sorta thing. 10/10 narration
Man, I have been looking for so long for a channel focused on lore of the games! And yours is just perfect! You got a great voice to listen to, and the depth of your research of the stories is also great! Thanks!
Playing through all of dishonored games/dlc during lockdown and in prep for deathloop... Great content I found here! Dishonored lore is so mysterious and appealing yet I feel it is practically untapped! Seriously though great videos you have here!! I hope arkane comes back to this property in the future.
I know this comment will probably go unnoticed but in my recent playthrough I noticed on a can of potten whale meat that there is a number in the corner written in a similar style to that of what's on the whales side. I guess the numbers are just in identifying kinda thing
The notice in DotO about the whales being near extinct got me right in the feels. The immediate push of the populace towards digging for oil instead of thinking about the consequences got me immediately thinking of frakking, and how in the midst of a looming water crisis we're using loads of it to chug more "black blood of the earth" so we can doom ourselves on two fronts faster. Reading Moby Dick at the same time probably didn't help much. That book's a really hard read retrospectively.
I'd like to think that the whales are just regular Dishonored universe whales until they make their first deep dive into the abyss where no light can ever touch, get infused with the void, go back up, get caught, die, and return to the void with their markings intact
i remember reading somewhere that the outsiders mark was his real human name written in the language of the dead, and that it had something to do with his power.
An amazing video no doubt. :D I feel like such a fool after watching this and the other video about Dishonored now. I always thought that the game had a lack of lore within it, that many things did not make sense. Bear in mind it was at a time when i payed much less attention than i do now. I think it was confirmed what they lonely rat boy's purpose was. He was the first to get the plague, and the first to spread it. The outsider himself set the plague into motion, which in turn set the events of Dishonored into motion.
Spack Jeeka It was Hiram Burrows who set the plague into motion, he brought it to Dunwall from some Isle or whatever because he had a plan (obviously backfired and too many people got sick). You can hear his confession on a low chaos playthrough. The Outsider doesn't intervene in any event, he only watches.
Pedro the Outsider intervenes A LOT. You literally said it yourself, Burrows did not CREATE the plague, he merely imported it to Dunwall. However, there is no reason the Outsider would not already have seen that outcome, and it's still being speculated as to whether he as involved in the creation of the plague or not.
Jordan G I'm pretty sure he only intervenes when he gives someone his mark. The Rat Plague was just a virus Hiram Burrows brought from somewhere else, viruses exist normally, I dont think the Outsider would create such a terror in the world on purpose. He saw what would happen in the future and he decided to mark Corvo because it would drastically change the outcome and it'd be interesting to watch. In my opinion that's all he does. It sounds weird and out of character for the Outsider to create the plague. But that's my two cents, who knows. Reading the Corroded Man now 😆
Pedro i do agree with you there, I honestly don't think he would care to do something like that. But I was just making the point that his influence extends further than a can comprehend, after all, he is basically the void haha! I really need to read the corroded man and get up on my lore haha
Jordan G Yes, you are correct. And you should really read it! I read the Wyrmwood Deceit, it was kinda boring to be honest. But The Corroded Man is really good. I'm very into it and I want to know what's gonna happen next. There's a lot of new information and references to old characters. And the new ones are great too.
There was a whale seen with some spears in it inside of a trailer. I believe there is supposed to be less whales/whale oil. Karnaca is more about wind power and doesn't seem as inhumane to whales. If you remember in the DLC a large whale is having oil extracted while it's still alive.
+Alex Lucky Yea, I've been reading the Corroded Man, and it seems the whaling trade took a hit sometime between the end of the Brigmore Witches and the beginning of the book. In one chapter, the book states: “The thought did not please Emily, and, although she could never say so as Empress, she was secretly pleased that the whaling industry was slowly dying out. New power technologies were coming on line, thanks to the work of Sokolov and Piero, the two old scientists forming a reluctant and fractious-if rather successful-partnership at the Academy of Natural Philosophy.”
This is late and it's just a thought but could it be that the whales are the only creature that the Outsider has pity for? He is mainly indifferent and is just watching events unfold.. but maybe with the whales he actually takes pity on them even if he doesn't outwardly show it.
Yea, sort of. I was an English major and took a bunch of English lit classes in college. Though I feel anyone could do what I do if they're really passionate about the subject. Thanks for the love btw!
Hi, I've been watching this series, and I love it so far, but I have a question. Last episode you explained the outsider, and at the beginning of Daud's DLC, he mentions that there are only eight who bear his mark, in the whole world, and you identified 5 candidates. However, it is also very prevalent that Daud's companions also have what seems to be the Outsiders abilities, which would add up to way more then eight. Could you shed some more light on this, please?
Hey Maxy, I'm not him but I could explain it to you. At another point in the DLC, as well as in a letter found in the main game, Daud explains that some of those who work for and with him gain some of the powers he has. Why this goes for some but not all is not known. One of the ways this is visible is that each known bearer of the outsider's mark has their own 'way' of blinking. Daud blinks by seemingly turning into ash or some other black substance. Corvo, as seen from third person in the DLC, turn into a blue ball of energy, Granny Rags turns into a cloud of feathers, and Delilah into a cloud of flowers (though I don't remember this so well). The Whalers blink in the same way as Daud, and the Brigmore Witches blink in the same way as Delilah. These people do not bear the Outsider's mark but rather lend the power from one who does. Another character that uses Outsider powers but is not mentioned in the video is the Royal Torturer. But he is assumed to lend his powers from Granny Rags who is revealed to have a connection with him in certain documents in game. I do partially disagree with his identification of the Lonely Ratboy as one of the 8 though, because as I understand it he had died already at the point when the Outsiders tells Daud there are 8 mark bearers.
GAMERS HEAVEN While I see why you think that, I disagree on the last four. The torturer may have been marked but it seems much more likely to me that has gains his powers from Granny Rags because of their relationship. This is similiar to Daud and The Whalers, and Delilah and the Brigmore Witches. Lonely Ratboy has been dead for a few years when the Outsiders remarks that their are eight marked people currently in the world. Look it up on the wiki. The journal about the unknown woman is written more then 30 years before the events of the game. The writer is the woman's son and they way he talks about his past with her makes it seem like she's dead. Emily has obviously not yet been marked by the Outsider, though it seems like she will be either before or in Dishonored 2. Lastly, it seems extremely unlikely to me that the Outsiders would only mark people in Dunwall (with maybe the exception of the unkown woman) and not any other place in the entire world. Even now the marked in Dunwall seem in to be extremly common. Though that may just be because the Outsiders is currently interested in that area.
The ending part about how he was trapped under the water and could hear the wahales reminded me of the musicbox the overseers use. Are they connected? The music box emits uniqe souns, as do whales. The whales and the outsider (so the void) are connected. The music box disturbs magic (magic coming from the void). I havent delved deep into this, but is it somewere stated the the musicbox emits sound similar to the whales?
I'm either gonna do Bioshock, or Amensia: The Dark Descent. Though I may do a one-off episode on another game before I do those. Haven't committed to anything just yet.
THIS IS THE BEST DISHONORED LORE SERIES ON UA-cam!
Yo, there's like no Dishonored lore vids on UA-cam. It's a woefully under appreciated game.
I agree 100%. But your videos are very, very good. I believe if you were to break down even more popular titles (i.e. Mass Effect, Elder Scrolls) your channel would explode. However, Dishonored is my favorite game that has released over the past couple years. Thanks for these videos

I can't even imagine what this episode would've been if we had Death of the Outsider as a source material when it was created 😭😭😭
Ada Harrison ?.
“bald” Donald Cerrone there are a lot of things that are wrong in this video but we only know they are wrong because the release of DotO
I'd always felt terribly about how the whales were treated in the world of Dishonored. You've exemplified why perfectly.

So that's why the witches at the mansion sometimes say "bones of the great leviathan!"
SPOILER if you haven't played Death of the Outsider yet
The mark is the Outsider's name.
I felt awful while playing dishonored at the whale slaughterhouse. There are documents there saying that killing whales made people mad, corrupted their minds, altered them into something else. Whales are truly magical in the Dishonored world.
want a captain obvious pro-tipp? spirit of the deep was written by Vera Moray/Granny Rags. *captain obvious flies away again*
I don't think these point to the whales or their ancestors being from the void. I think like the outsider the whale has been exploited, hurt, killed by humans
Got some good things on sale stranger? That calming OST can not be mistaken
Hahaha, timeless tune!
From a very good game
Screams of the whales in the tainted deep
Maimed and impaled in their pain they sleep
The faded and frail and the laneways weep
Broken souls in mourning…
I like the usage of *Resident Evil 4 Serenity* as the background music.
And yes, another video extremely well made with care and passion! Bravo!
The Resident Evil safe room music seems to be seared into my memory
This is a really, genuinely insightful look into the lore of my absolute favorite game. Thanks for dedicating your time to making these things.
I appreciate the love. They're not perfect, but they're the only comprehensive lore videos on UA-cam it seems. One more to go!
WOW, what an incredible series. Too bad there is almost none Dishonored Lore videos on YT like these. Really enjoyed it from the music to the commentary. Well Done
your analysis is very touching, thank you.
No, thank you, 👌
An interesting point made about the whales, in point of fact in modern Hebrew the word for whale is לוויתן (Levyatan) the origin of the word Leviathan
Your narration reminds me of Rod Serling! You really build up the mysterious atmosphere of the whales; great job :)
3:48 you talk about primordial chaos. In classical World of Darkness lore, this would be the Wyld
This is absolutely perfect THANK YOU
No thanks necessary. Just glad you dug it.

New subscriber right here!
i cant wait for your take on the lore of dishonored 2!
i hope it is just as deep or maybe even deeper than the first game
I can't wait either! I've avoided all gameplay videos so I'm super excited!
Great job. I love Dishonored and felt like not many people really liked the lore as much as I did. Glad to see you do these and hope to see more.
To make a bit of a poor comparison. You are the nobbel87 of Dishonored right now and I love it.
Great work. Hopefully we'll learn more about this in Dishonored 2.

Man, I'm really going to have to finish the game myself before I can watch these, which is a shame, because they're so damn good.
I recommend it, if for no other reason than to be ready for Dishonored 2!
Thorough and well researched, I enjoyed your series. And I was delighted and captivated by your voice and narration. I could listen to you speak all night :#)

This is really good content. Keep it up and don't get discouraged by view count. I believe in you.
I ended the whales suffering in that warehouse.
I can't wait to see what Dishonored 2 has in store lore wise
Heyy! Cool series dude! Keep it up. I have only been a dishonored fan since the last two weeks but I find its lore very much interesting.
I've come back from the dead to remind you that you're awesome and to keep up the great work.
The outsiders name is actually his own. This was made after death of the outsider, you should know its actually how you write his name.
Amazing I love your lore series all of them Soma, Bioshock this brilliant all of them

Thanks for the loyalty and diligence, lol. I need more fans like you. I'm hoping to get the. Next episode out before the 11th, but we'll see.

Many things are now answered in the new games. Nice.
Amazing, simply amazing. You, sir, have a very soothing voice.
great videos, I just love the lore of the game.
What if the Void represents the darkest depths of the sea?
this is fantastic please do more of dishonored
spot on man! this is some good stuff right here. "fist bump" :D

what was the name of the document about the natural philosopher and the sinking bell. It was so moving, i want to read it myself
Alonso Saldivar The Deep Watchers. It's one of the best written pieces of text in the game.
How was his accounts recovered if he died...?
@@insertoyouroemail it was recovered from the bathysphete
Thanks for the video and all the effort you put into it! how long till episode 3 do you think?
I felt the Resident Evil 4 OST way more fitting. :) great job dude!

Great video dude. (y)

KRIMZONMEKANISM maybe granny rags? She's had more experience with the outsider than anyone
Yea, the best lore is hidden away in walls of texts. I've got one more episode planned.
Gameological Dig Thanks for responding :)
Keep up the good work. ;)
+KRIMZONMEKANISM Of course. Thanks for watching!
Great video as always
hell yeah part 2 is here!
Yup! Hopefully ill be able to get part 3 soon! Thanks for watching!
In dishonored 2 theres a picture of a giant whale like a leviathan with some guys watching from the sore
Whoa. This is really cool. Anyone ever tell you that your narrative voice sounds like a young Ron Perlman?
I'm afraid in dishonored 2 I believe the whales are to be extinct
Josh W it's been shown in gameplay there's whale oil so it's unlikely
There was a whale seen with some spears in it inside of a trailer. I believe there is supposed to be less whales/whale oil. Karnaca is more about wind power and doesn't seem as inhumane to whales. If you remember in the DLC a large whale is having oil extracted while it's still alive.
+Alex Lucky Yea, I've been reading the Corroded Man, and it seems the whaling trade took a hit sometime between the end of the Brigmore Witches and the beginning of the book. In one chapter, the book states:
“The thought did not please Emily, and, although she could never say so as Empress, she was secretly pleased that the whaling industry was slowly dying out. New power technologies were coming on line, thanks to the work of Sokolov and Piero, the two old scientists forming a reluctant and fractious-if rather successful-partnership at the Academy of Natural Philosophy.”
I dont know if it was out when you posted this comment but they are certainly not extinct
Awesome video!
Your voice sounds a little like Havelock's sometimes, or maybe I'm deluding myself. Looking forward to the next part!
Hahaha, thanks! I actually love the actor! Sterling from Mad Men.
I just noticed the music in the background is Serinity from Resident Evil 4
This is late and it's just a thought but could it be that the whales are the only creature that the Outsider has pity for? He is mainly indifferent and is just watching events unfold.. but maybe with the whales he actually takes pity on them even if he doesn't outwardly show it.
the only difference between Monsters and Animals is the fear of those who observe them.
Good shit
*more interesting than US politics*
Can't disagree lol
Is it possible that the people in the city before dunwall who cared the ruins where the same cultist who created the outsider.
thank u sir.
for making educatinal vedios on dishonered.
don't talk to me if you didn't put the whale out of its misery in the knife of dunwall
What's the song in the beginning of the video?
Anyone?
@@seanweiland2711 Serenity from Resident Evil 4
Excellent work, comprehensive and compelling analysis. You have an academic background in this type of synthesis?
Hey Maxy,
I'm not him but I could explain it to you.
Stijn Selten
Thanks a lot for explaining this to me. I know you probably have better things to do, but thanks nevertheless
Maxy it's kinda like [k] the anime rules
the mark bearers are corvo, daud, grannyrags, delilah, torturer, ratboy, unknown woman, emily
Though that may just be because the Outsiders is currently interested in that area.
more more more more more more more more more more more more more more more, WE WANT MORE!!!
Is that the resident evil 4 shop song in the background?
And you know this, maannnnnn!!!
Resident Evil 4 OST - Serenity
in case anyone is asking in future...
Great Job !
Osamoele thanks!
Erik Norman clever theory
this is DEEP!
What is your next lore video after Dishonored?
Could you make Bioshock Infinite, Journey?
I'm either gonna do Bioshock, or Amensia: The Dark Descent. Though I may do a one-off episode on another game before I do those. Haven't committed to anything just yet.
May I suggest considering Baldur's Gate 2, Syberia, Bioshock Infinite and Journey?
the mark... it's his name.
Celestial Friend watch the Death of the Outsider video. That’s covered.
