I started following Dr. Berg in September, 2020. I was 330 pounds, 6’ 4”. My leg was swelling, I had acid reflux, on two blood pressure pills and 2 Cholesterol pills. I started fasting and I cut out carbs, I worked into a 24 hour fast . This morning I weighed out at 245 pounds, no swelling, no acid reflux and the doc and taken me off 1/2 my meds. He is impressed. Thanks for the info Dr. Berg.

0:04 Prolonged fasting is one of the most important things you can do for your health, for your ability to avoid cancer, for anti-aging, for straightening your immune system, for your brain to grow brain cells, for any type of chronic health condition that involves inflammation like auto-immune disease, like celiac and digestive inflammatory diseases. Prolonged fasting just takes your health results to the next level. It's wayyy more powerful than even regular intermittent fasting.
1:01 Things you need to know when you do prolonged fasting:
1:20 Mistake #1 - Breaking your fast with carbs
4:14 Mistake #2 - Doing intense exercise or a lot of physical work

Eating raw vegetables like greens containing insoluble fiber to break a very long fast is way too hard on the digestive system especially raw veggies. That could actually put you in the hospital. Well cooked vegetables with soluble fiber that are easy to digest like potato well pureed in a soup broth with egg is easy on the system I would ignore his non excercise recommendation if you do not have a medical condidtion. The body was designed for survival to daily hunt with intensity for food while being without it for many days or even weeks.

I had a severe inflammation problem in my hands feet and face. I also had other odd symptoms. My doctors suspected it was either lupus, Lyme, diabetes, or some other condition but they could never diagnose me. I tried many treatments and home remedies that didn't help. The doctor's wanted to put me on steroids and I didn't want that. I became desperate for relief so I tried a 3 day fast and for the first time in months I had zero inflammation! I have been doing 3 day fasts now every 1-2 months and I've lost 20 pounds and I feel great.

I think best reason to do a longer fast (like a week of just water) is the experience that will change you forever and make you look very differently at whatever short fasting regime you are planning to do. Skipping a breakfast will no longer look like a problem after you have experienced a week of no calories.
For me it was observing how you first get hungry but then the hunger passes (which is super strange), the feeling of lightness and clarity throughout the fast (totally unexpected -- I thought I will be sluggish and hard to focus) and then the feeling of breaking the fast as a nuisance (I thought breaking the fast will be something I will be looking to but the opposite was true).

If you break your prolonged fast or starvation too quickly or too suddenly then you could literally die. There were many such cases throughout history. I was also taken into the ER twice after breaking the fast by eating three full blown meals and then going for a jogging on the first day. My blood pressure, heart rate, and blood sugar levels skyrockets to the dangerous extremes. Nearly died. Breaking fast properly is the single most important thing when you fast.

My happy length is a 5 ½ day fast. I drink black coffee, take electrolytes and binders bentonite clay, diatomaceous earth and zeolite on the last day or two. 48 hours before breaking fast I roast grass fed beef bones to make a bone broth. I break fast with a bone broth stew of finely chopped organ meats and vegetables. My most dramatic improvement was focusing the stem cells through immediately starting a course of peptides BPC-157 and TB 500.

A year ago, I was 375lbs. I weighed in at 331 a few days ago. That’s when I decided to take it to the next level and start doing Intermittent fasting via The Doc. So excited to see where I’m at in a year!
Update (April 25, 2023): I just weighed in at 270lbs at my doc appt today! Goal is 250, then eventually 200. I feel great, especially looking back at pictures and videos from a year ago). Don’t give up, y’all!

Prolonged fasting Notes: 1. Break fast without the carbs, includes fruits and berries. 2. No intense exercise immediately after prolonged fast. 3. No over eating once you decide to break fast (digestive process not prepared for onslaught; eat very small amounts hours apart on day one and build up). 4. No apple cider vinegar 5. No protein powders

I wish I had known about adding salt etc. when doing a prolonged fast.
I grew up fasting as a kid when we were sick- we did it because we lived on a farm and thats what animals do when they're sick. And it makes sense- every symptom is the body saying "don't eat please!" (food tastes bland because your nose is congested, your throat is sore, etc. etc.) It was hard- as a kid people thought my parents were psycho but now I see how ahead of the times they were.
I never had to take antibiotics once. And I rarely got sick. But when I was 14 I got Scarlet Fever and fasted for almost three weeks on just water. But the beautiful thing is that at the end you can tell that you body truly "fought" the virus or bacteria and therefore the immune system evolved or adapted! Meaning that then you don't get recurring infections (such as Strep throat which people tend to get repeatedly)
Last year I had covid and fasted for 10 days (on just water). The beautiful thing is when you get to the end of being sick you feel like your body has cleaned up all the house keeping it hasn't gotten to do when you're normally eaten.
So when you fast when you get sick (which feels natural anyway) you can see that being sick is actually perhaps part of how we stay healthy in a larger sense.

A lot of what Dr. Berg says here reminds me of when the Allies liberated Nazi internment camps at the end of WWII. The GIs' first impulse was to start handing the prisoners all sorts of food since they were obviously starving. When the medics arrived they had to take away the food, although it was heartbreaking to do so, because they realized the harm cheese, bread, meat, etc. would cause to bodies that had been in a starvation state for months and even years. One of the episodes of "Band of Brothers" includes scenes dealing with this.

Few years ago i fasted and added a bit of baking soda in the water the first few days, and also drink small quantities of water. in fact drinking very little. I did 14 days on water and felt very good. Another point i find very important, be strong and don't cheat! So many time i stopped fasting after few days because i was chewing a bit of bread. When you realize that after 3/4 days not cheating, fasting becomes so easy, you will never cheat anymore ;)

I saw many people talking about how they did 2 hour hikes and weight training and felt great while doing prolonged fasting. I saw one doctor that recommended exercise only in the first 24 hours of a fast.
I just finished my first 3 day fast, and on the second and third day I did a mild workout and bike riding. (My current amount of energy and fitness is a bit hard to describe as I exercise regularly but am also limited by a chronic medical condition that I'm treating and has been affecting me for many years.)
I stopped at around 70 hours, and was starting to feel like I overdid it by the end of the third day, but I felt great exercising on the second, and got through the third as well or better than most feeding days.
I was supplementing with electrolytes and some vitamins.

Finally arrived on day 6 of my 7 day water fast. It’s been a journey alright but I feel so much better now then I did a couple of days ago. I did actually do one spout of high intensity exercise (gymnastics class). I did feel quite light headed at times. But I added salt to my water which also helped. One thing that I feel a difference (only did this yesterday) was adding the lemon juice and lime juice to the water. That made me feel so much better and less hungry. I try and get out for an at least an hour walk per day for exercise and also do some basic exercises to maintain muscle mass. This has also helped. When breaking my fast I’ll have a bowl of Pho and I’ll make sure I’ll chew on that food as many times before I swallow it haha. Before I used to just throw food in my mouth and have a couple of bites and swallow. So far lost 4.6cm off my waist, so can’t complain :)

Thanks for your great videos Dr. Berg. Are there protective mechanisms to prevent vitamin and mineral loss while prolonged fasting since one is not taking nutritional supplements and not eating any solid nourishment? Thank you.

I was ill for two weeks around Thanksgiving time and had absolutely zero appetite. It was fabulous! I had no idea how bloated I was until several days with no food and very, very little water. I was so excited for the jumpstart into keto and was below 150lbs! My goal is 125 so I was on my way! Sadly, my husband is a bad influence (bless his heart) and I’m back over 150 again……I just broke my 22 hour fast with a grapefruit. Guess that was a bad idea. Gotta try again tomorrow.

    Thank you, Dr. Berg!
I've been low carb/keto for years but just late last year found out about "prolonged fasting".
    (I usually say "extended fasting".)
I've been very pleased w/ the results, especially the increased insulin sensitivity.
I usually feel better when I don't eat, is that normal?
Thank you for all you do.
    Have a GREAT day, Neighbor!

      Weird isn’t it? I haven’t worked up
      To a
Prolonged fast yet but even during a 16-18 hour fast I feel fine to great! Nobody believes me!!!

Last day of my 8 day fast. I'll be doing this again, so I needed this info. So glad I saw this. I think I'll do a couple of green drinks the first day.
