  • The Collab I didn't know I needed. Epica is always an amazing experience and Shining may now need their own reaction? Either way. The Final Lullaby was another wonderful song, executed brilliantly.

Just rolling back for a listen, and wanted to give a shout-out to the bass player of Epica. Rob van der Loo is the main mind behind (it seems) for this track. That hard rock vibe is a Rob hallmark. He is brilliant -- all of Epica are -- but special props to Rob for this track.
Also fun fact: They debuted this during their 20th anniversary show. That's a great bit of helping other bands to give Shining exposure like this. I give Epica a lot of my time because they seem like decent human beings. Their music is phenomenal, helps.

This song is from the EP named 'The Alchemy Project'. All songs were co-written and produced with the featured artist(s), so they were definitely not an afterthought. The other two songs on their channel from this project are: "Sirens - Of Blood And Water" feat. Charlotte Wessels & Myrkur Link: ua-cam.com/video/svGQ-q9gx68/v-deo.html And "The Great Tribulation" feat. Fleshgod Apocalypse. Link: ua-cam.com/video/HOwBTqWMhE8/v-deo.html The latter isn't much of a video (more like a visualizer)

This song and the EP is a product of Epica's collaboration with other bands and artists. The second strong track from this album is Sirens of blood and water (with Charlotte Wessels and Myrkur). Absolutely charming song with a combination of three different female voices. This song has already been recommended in the comments.
Also, Finnish cello metal band Apocalyptica recorded a song with Simone. And this song is just amazing. If you've never heard of Apocalyptica, you might want to check it out. Moreover, Simone's vocals in this song are the most beautiful that I have heard from her.

Alchemy Project is great, all songs with featured artists like Tommy K. from Kamelot.
Another top Epica song that Chase would love is Universal Death Squad. Issac just has some amazing guitar work on that song. Chase could even do a deep dive with lyric video and then the guitar playthrough.

  • @YohnTheViking
    @YohnTheViking Рік тому +4

So, if you're looking for more Shining make sure to look for the Norwegian one. There's also a Swedish Shining, which is a black metal band with a certain amount of...notoriety...cutting yourself on stage type notoriety.
The Norwegian Shining then. Started out as a jazz outfit with some odd ideas, they then worked with another Norwegian black metal band Enslaved (one of the best bands to come out of Norway, and that's saying something). This created the concept of Blackjazz which is as the name might suggest highly black metal influenced Jazz. They have mellowed out in certain albums and been more of a jazz/rock/metal/pop hybrid. They are still highly respected in the metal community though, have played some of the biggest festivals and still regularly tour with metal bands (though often sticking to the Blackjazz era material).
Saw them play years ago just after they released the album Blackjazz, which also launched the style. One of the tightest live performances I've ever experienced, and is one of those bands that are best experienced live.
    Since you asked for links:
ua-cam.com/video/2fMlP5i53WE/v-deo.html Fairly recent live version of one of the songs off the Blackjazz album (released in 2010).
ua-cam.com/video/iGwBp7Yr0Oo/v-deo.html Playing a song atop a rock shelf jutting straight out from a mountain, with the same style as the first one.
ua-cam.com/video/EZzxW8xPk9c/v-deo.html And a track from their newer slightly more mellow material.
Do note that while all of these are from the official channel, some do contain a Vevo watermark and copyright might be an issue.

To be fair, Nightwish is way more general public-friendly in their sound. They don't feature heavy growls (and when they do in a few songs, it is in the background) and even their instrumentals are way lighter. They are more Symphonic and Epica is more Metal. I love them both, but I understand why Nightwish is the more popular band.

Epica, so consistent to their sound, yet no song is the same. This album full of collabs was great. They also did an EP of songs from 'Attack on Titan'. Also their acoustic versions of some of their songs are outstanding.

Thanks to you introducing me to Epica back in 2020, I had the joy of seeing them live in London a few weeks ago - my 2nd ever metal concert after Nightwish in November.
What a show they put on (they did visit Nottingham too)
There are 3 parts to Kingdom of Heaven, each over 10 minutes, with parts 1 and 3 being more popular than 2 (which I also love) - 3 has an official live video release on their channel from their COVID-era live show.
I recommend Design Your Universe @ Retrospect as others have said, but also EPICA - Universal Death Squad (OFFICIAL LYRIC VIDEO) - its more like a band practice video with lyrics slapped on top

This new ep came with huge surprises. It's like nothing they have ever made. Some songs doesn't even sound like Epica at all so it would be interesting to hear your thoughts on some of them. All the songs in the album are collabs but they are actually written with the invited artists. I recommend the miner, the greatest tribulation or sirens. But of course there's still some of the older stuff you haven't heard like Design your universe at retrospect show or Kingdom of heaven. By the way, each part of Kingdom of heaven are totally separated and you can react to them in any order you see fit and in different videos if than makes it less complicated.

@@ChaseCarneson Yeah man, can you do Epica more often? Seriously... They have over 120 songs and they are great. Epica doesn't have "filler songs" on their albums. Basically, even if you picked randomly, you would be impressed by most songs. Most other "symphonic" metal bands don't even come close. I listen to them and they all sound pretty much the same and "generic". Same can be said about Simone, she's a true goddess in this subgenre. Especially if you listen to her operatic head voice from earliest years of Epica... there's no other singer that sounds like she did back then. Yeah, maybe it was an immature soprano, but it was very unique, warm and ethereal. Absolutely beautiful. React to anything from Paradiso Live (2006) (except Consign to Oblivion, which you already did from 2017) and hear for yourself. 😉

Hello! I hope you're going to listen to this phenomenal band much more. 😉
They don't have any weak albums, but their music can be heavy for some mainstream listeners (non-metal heads).
Would you like a few suggestions? They have several wonderful ballads too.

This song and the EP were amazing, the song with Fleshgod Apocalypse was also absolutely stellar.
Unrelated but the use of the sax, an unusual instrument in metal reminded me, and I know you’ve checked them out before but would love to see you react to one of Ne Obliviscari’s new songs from their upcoming album, the song Equus is fantastic and absolutely gorgeous.

Glad to hear you're going to do Kingdom of Heaven pt. 1, it's probably their best song. Hopefully the version from the concert in Mexico. Maybe try Serenade of Self-Destruction: ua-cam.com/video/-hW7EfiBwm0/v-deo.html

live from mexico of poor quality. There is a version on UA-cam from the Omega alive show, unofficial, with subtitles in Spanish, but better than that. Or lyric video

Or still appreciate the third part, the official video from Omega alive, I think Chase will be surprised by the staging and spectacle

@@wildhoney126 Considering it's cut together from cell phone footage, it's pretty good quality. Nothing wrong with Ωmega Alive version, but I prefer the live energy of the one from Mexico, the crowd really adds something, I think. Part Three is good, just don't think it's as good as Part One, though it's a lot better than Part Two. It's all personal preference.

I knew that sax drop would melt your brain! Great to see Epica back on the channel! Please, please, please do Wake The World from this same EP! Sadly there is no video, but I’ve never quite heard anything like this song: ua-cam.com/video/1gCuqKD3lMg/v-deo.html

Sae Epica in Bristol a few weeks ago, supporting Apocalyptica. Awesome! Still hoping that you get round to doing a reaction to Myrath - the best band ever to come out of Tunisia. ;-) Suggest the song Dance.

Chase, I know you check out the comments section (and I appreciate you for that), and I was wondering. Have you ever checked out any Coheed and Cambria? Their older stuff is god tier. I'd love to hear your critique on my personal favourite, The Crowing. And there are so many other stunners - Delirium Trigger, Sentry the Defiant, The Final Cut. True craftsmen of music. I'll leave it with you, but if I know you, your interest will be piqued.

I don’t like asking about other groups on a reaction but……. have you seen anything by The Warning - up and coming rock band comprised of 3 sisters from Mexico? I keep searching to see if you’ve reacted to them - would love to hear your insights. And as I was typing this, you said “put up a link”. OK, I will! A couple perhaps…..
Money - this is the song that kept popping up on my sidebar. Good intro to the group: ua-cam.com/video/vm78KpEw3uw/v-deo.html
Disciple - off their new album. I can see you stopping and rewinding a few times: ua-cam.com/video/wf_kTI1F2XM/v-deo.html
Dust to Dust - older song, I believe they are all in their teens, the drummer Pau singing: ua-cam.com/video/TeIbG8nkOiU/v-deo.html
