As I watch more boxing I appreciate Larry more and more. He’s by far the most disrespected/underrated HW champ in history.
I agree, and Ken Norton may have been the second most disrespected/underrated. Me and my dad loved Ali , but we both thought Norton should have won all 3 fights.
Mike Tyson:"Hold my 🍺."
Norton also very underated
@@dougfredricks2017 if anything tyson is overrated
@@galiciadabest yes
One of the best fights in the history of boxing.
Talk about a second wind, a third wind, maybe even a fourth wind. Holmes and Norton found out just how deeply they could dig on this night. Both men sensed the fight, and with it the title, was up for grabs going into round 15, and both men were willing to go through sheer hell in order to win.
In the end, someone had to break wind.
One of the few fights you will ever see where there was no clenching. I think the referee may have broke them up once. Great fight.
Well said
One of the greatest heavyweight fights of all time. Underrated.
This greatest era of heavyweights!!! These guys were beasts!
I will never forget eating an edible and stumbling upon this fight. My head almost blew up during the 15th round, it was way too epic 😂
Edibles are no joke
Larry proved himself with this fight.(and with someny others)
He was a great champion, and a great example for everyone in or outside the ring.
And he is still a great champion.Absoluetly love the content of this video.
He has a legacy that no one!!! no one !! can take away from him.
Just watching this fight,or the other 2!!! fight with Shavers who was one of the biggest puncher of any generation!!!
And of course the flying kick from a car to Berbick :D :D :D :D
True legend and deserve all of the credit.
Thank you for the content.
That flying kick will go down in boxing history as the greatest moment in humanity lol
Holmes was an outstanding champion and not recognized enough BUT THAT 2 FOOT DROPKICK OFF A CAR was epic!!!
I dunno dude. When he lost the fight that meant he lost his chance to break Marcianos record he said Marciano wasn't fit to carry his jockstrap. That was a dick move
@@A-small-amount-of-peas He was upset because they had brought in I think it was Rocky's brother and the media had been in his face the whole week. He had already gotten into it with the brother during an earlier press conference. What he actually said was I could say Rocky couldn't even carry my jockstrap. He felt he was being dished by the media for fighting a Light Heavyweight and not some of the other top Heavyweights. He was upset that the media never questioned any of Rocky's early fights in which he had a lot of questionable opposition especially fighters with losing records. He apologized later and admitted he shouldn't have stated that way .
@@curtismcneil8695 whoop dee shit. Just shows his true nature coming to the surface
Heavyweights these days can't fight at this pace for 12 rounds, let alone 15! An absolute classic and one of the best heavyweight fights I have ever seen.
Usyk, Joe Joyce, Fury.
@@Ultizer All 3 fighters would have the fans in attendance asleep inside of 3 rounds
Their era was like watching gods fight each other!
This was the best heavyweight slugfest I even seen, besides Lyle and Foreman.
Also check out David Tua v. Ike Ibeabuchi!!!! The amount of punches they threw for heavyweights, WOW 😮!!!!
@@bryonwatkins1432 oh yeah 👍 I seen that one tua and ibua, that was and AWESOME fight too
Crazy how Holmes debatably beat 78 Norton slightly by a hair while Ali past his prime and his best years beat prime 73 Norton. Prime Ali would’ve demolished both of this two.
Lyle Vs Shavers is also a good one but the video quality sucks though
@@donnellvickers6314 I was waiting on someone to say Ike Ibeabuchi vs Tua!!! 2 heavyweights both throwing 100 punches a round was unbelievable. A top 10 all time action fight
Its hard to find any heavyweights in this era that could of maintained a pace like that. Great fight
My thoughts EXACTLY!! Through 15 NOT 12 rounds...less technology and a whole lot more grit
wrong there would be plenty.
@@knockup100 what are u talking about, heavyweights nowadays are usually gassed by the 8 9 and 10th round, these guys used to go 15 FREAKIN ROUNDS!!!! Act like u kno😒
@@knockup100 LOLOLOL. Not one could do it pal...not one. No way. Both of those warriors would destroy any of these jokes calling themselves champions in the heavyweight division today.
@@zuludkawso LOL Exactly zuludkawso! Imagine any of these guys today trying to go 15 with Larry or Ken, nope they would end up on their ass!! That was by far the best era of boxing ever!! By far...
When Larry Holmes criticizes the current heavyweights he is immediately laughed at on various social networks without knowing that he has every right to speak (as well as he is right) being one of the best heavyweights of all time and the best jab in boxing history, Ken Norton does not he is never nominated in the rankings even though he is also one of the best all-time highs, he would have won the title with spinks and also the third match with Ali was a victory so the WBC belt was absolutely deserved. Rip Mr Norton and stay blessed Mr Holmes
Larry Holmes is the greatest forgotten heavyweight, This fight alone should have given him the respect he earned the hard way, Norton was strong, durable and he broke Ali's jaw, these 2 put on a classic 💯
he is not forgotten. he was underrated at his time because of Ali's looong shadow, and he was seen as a bad man in public as he ended Ali's career; many of those can remember that fight was not Ali's last bout- it was one with Berbick in 1981. so, i see Holmes as a version of improved Ali, displayed in that Norton fight for 15 rounds straight. Both were master boxers.
Norton was a beast against fighters with finesse but struggled against powerful fighters like Foreman!
The beatings that generation of fighters endured for 15 rounds is unthinkable today...I'm surprised nobody died
Apparently, the punches were soft. Compared to modern HW punches.
Norton won the last two rnds and edged Holmes...but they wanted Holmes not an aging Norton. One of the greatest fights ever.
Close fight. I had 8-7 for Holmes. But I wouldn’t argue if it went to Norton. Too close to call and comes down to what criteria you look for in a fight. I look for ring generalship and clean hard effective shots.
Yes boxing politics has been cruel indeed over the decades. Norton so unlucky in 76 and 78.
No way Norton won the 15th. It was dead even round going into the last 20-25 seconds but then Holmes buckled Norton's knees with a big shot and Norton was wobbly till the bell. Most fans didn't even notice it, but to me, that was the difference in a very close round and a very close fight.
@@jayritchie851 14 and 15 in my eyes
I disagree, as would most I think...Norton Def LOST the last round and because of this, the fight.
Larry Holmes, I have him as the sixth greatest heavyweight of all time. The bridge between Ali and Tyson. Criminally underrated, all time great champion. S/O to Ken Norton as well, a good fighter during the greatest era the heavyweight division has ever seen. Arguably beat Ali in all three fights.
Rhythm Boxing remains the P4P champion of Boxing related content. With no signs of slowing down.
Great job as always by this channel!
Ali won the rematch and kept the title 💯///Larry Holmes won almost every round vs Norton, Larry TOOK the title.. Norton was walking into punches all night... had Norton boxed Ali at his peak he would've lost the first ..
Agreed. Ali is my favorite heavyweight but I thought Norton won all 3 fights. Norton lost to Holmes by 1 point. Should've been an immediate rematch
@@mongoslade277 A second Holmes-Norton fight was planned but right before the rematch, Norton fought Ernie Shavers who knocked him out in the FIRST round. Not surprisingly, the rematch was scrubbed.
@@mongoslade277 Norton didn’t beat Ali in their second fight. You can make a case for the third, though I thought Ali won.
@@HankFinkle11 I think your right. Saw a replay of the 2nd Ali vs Norton fight. Thought Ali got him like you said
A couple of very tough and great fighters! Great video and thank you!
The fact these guys fought 15 rds why do we compare ppl
This Larry beats Tyson
It would have been something. It's a shame the both of them weren't in their prime, at the same time.
I agree…
Styles make fights and I think prime Mike is a bad match up for Larry. Prime Tyson had incredible fast feet and his had speed was as fast as any heavyweight. His head movement made him hard to hit and he countered off his opponents jab very well.
But the biggest thing is Tysons body attack. He pounded fighters like Marvis Frazier and Berbick to the body. These were vicious shots that can suck the life out of a boxer. Remember it was a body shot that put Spinks down for the first knockdown. It buckled Spinks. Then all Mike had to do was casually hit him with a right and It was over. But my point is that I think prime Mike would pond Larry's body so hard and so frequently he would eventually succumb. Tyson was was faster with his legs than Norton and possessed much more power a well.
I think Ali could beat prime Tyson by dancing and clenching when Mike got him on the ropes. But Larry could not dance like prime Ali and would have to beat Mike in the center of the ring for the most part. That would not be easy.
I think prime Holmes clearly beats prime Hollyfield but I think prime Hollyfield might actually beat Tyson. Holyfield could counter effectively and could fight on the inside better than Larry. I can't say for sure but Holyfield appears to matchup better against Tyson than Holmes. But head to head I think Holmes would beat Holyfield convincingly. And I am taking prime against prime of course.
A Norton Holyfield fight would be interesting to discuss. Or a Joe Frazier vs Holyfield could be a fun one.
So no one saw Sylester Stallone in the front/middle of the audience? He was taking notes for his Rocky films...
A mistake in the narration at 17:10. By the end of round 14, the fight was even at 133-133 apiece on all judges cards. Two judges gave the 15th round to Holmes and one to Norton, making the final score 143-142, 142-143, 143-142 to Holmes via split decision. You cannot get a closer fight than this.
Foreman also made light work of Norton. I think he should have beaten Holmes.
Holmes' recuperative ability is like no other. He would get out of no where just when you knew he was done.
"ken norton kicked my ass and i dont care what nobody says"🤣

His jab was one of the best in the business.

What a war! I watched it live and it still remains the best Championship in the history of boxing. Something like that you remember forever.
There were alot of great names that go underappreciated in the HW division of the 80s Larry Holmes is one of them
i was 17 when i watched this fight, sat. afternoon, 1978 and by far the best heavyweight fight ever. larry was an animal.i dont know if anyone could beat him in his prime.
Foreman could
All old school boxers have amazing life stories and so inspiring ~ 👑 Ali the king
This is one of the best I've seen!!! great video!
Two absolute warriors. Respect to them both. Some much heart in that ring.
Classic Heavyweight Fight
THAT round has long deserved an introduction like this. Brilliant. God bless Ken and Larry.
Another get video, you the best at what you do keep up the great work💯
He is definitely the best
I clearly have not been watching this great boxing 🥊 channel as often as I need to....
Very close fight with Holmes just edging it.
He was a great champion over 7.5 years.
Coming back from the brutal knock down in the 2nd fight against Shavers, proved what a great champ he was. I don’t think many fighters would have got up from that.
I remember watching this fight and I was glued to the TV that night. I am glad this video is out there and for those of you that haven't seen this fight I highly recommend you take time to check it out. This is one of the best Heavyweight Championship fights you'll ever see. I didn't say No.1 I still would have to rank the first Ali vs Frazier fight as my all time No. 1 but it's always going to be a matter of opinion. I still have never been able to figure out how the Ring magazine didn't have this as there fight of the year. They had The Ali vs Spinks fight 1 fight as the fight of the year. Amazing thing about this fight is that there was really no clinching I think maybe the referee had to separate them once. Fight could have went either way there was no loser that night. I had Holmes winning 9 rounds but I could see someone having Norton ahead it was that close.
Heart, grit, power, speed, conditioning, technique, pace, courage; norton vs holmes brought it all into the ring that night. A beautiful gutsy performance by both men. Greatest heavyweight bout of all time.
I had Holmes sweeping the first 6 rounds. He also took 12, 13. Round 15 was really a toss-up. I gave it to Norton despite a big rally by Holmes near the end of the round. Kenny lost too many of the early and mid-rounds. It was just too deep a hole for him to climb out of.
I hate when I see Larry Holmes name left off the list of the great heavyweights. As a young boy I watched Ali and saw Larry grow out of his shadow. He arguably got robbed twice in his fights with Spinks. He was never treated well by the media and was denied his opportunity to tie and surpass Rocky Marciano's record. Those of us who saw his career know he fought everyone valiantly. Larry Holmes is a class act and deserves to be mentioned as one of the greats. At his zenith he could have beaten anyone. Just look at the guts he had in this fight against Norton. Thank you for paying homage to these two great heavyweights
You are correct. I think true fight fans appreciate him but most of the casual fans probably don't. Part of the problems is Larry lacked charisma. He wasn't as articulate or fun as Ali and didn't have the intimidation factor like Tyson. Both his and Tyson's era were relatively weak as well. But being sandwiched between Ali and Tyson hurts Holmes from the perspective of the casual fans.
@@bobbywise2313 I mostly agree with you. I also still firmly believe that at his best he could have competed with any heavyweight in history. He arguably had one of the greatest jabs in heavyweight history and a very solid chin. He couldn't act nor look the part but that is not what can be judged when you're dealing with Larry. I've grown to love him and respect him as one of my favorites
@@hoover2501 Definitely. No argument from me there. He was very skilled. I grew up watching him.
@@bobbywise2313 he is and was the only true Ali disciple. Ali taught him so many things. So heartbreaking when he had to beat the shell of his former idol. I so vividly remember him asking the referee to stop the fight.
@@hoover2501 It wasn't Larry's fault. The fight should never have happened. Ali had failed basic a basic physical and an MRI had shown significant brain damage, but this was covered up. Even during training everyone on his camp knew he was not right. He would fall asleep as soon as he sit down and struggled with simple things like jumping rope. Some of that was due to being misdiagnosed with hypothyroidism and on thyroid meds. But it was also age and the accumulation of damage his head had taken.
He did look better against Berbick but nevertheless he still was still no where near what he was just 5 years earlier and he was pretty washed up even then.
But Larry was probably at his peak when Ali made the foolish mistake of stepping into the ring with him. If John Tate had not been knocked out by Weaver he was going to fight him. Ali would have lost to virtually any heavyweight on the night he fought Holmes but perhaps the beating would not have been as bad. But Holmes did hold back punches as the fight progressed and like you said begged the ref to stop it. Larry cried after the fight as well.
There is no way Angelo Dundee did not know that Ali was not right for this. Hell even the Ali that had beaten Spinks in the rematch would have had no chance against Larry. So even without the layoff and health issues he would have had no chance. I could go in and on because this is the dark side of the sport. I love boxing but crap like this makes me cringe. But to be clear, no one should blame Larry. And I do realize that Ali probably needed the money at the time because his managers cheated him and I think a divorce hit him hard as well. But the commission and his trainers should have protected him from himself. Fighters are always the last to know when it is time to walk away. His time was after Frazier 3 really. He was a shell after that fight.
man norton was such a skilled fighter.....and he could take a lot of punishment...
then comes George Forman and demolishes him in 2 rounds. Such was the power of Foreman...
Shavers might hit harder, but Foreman was landing his bombs WAY more often and consistently from the starting bell.
Foreman is also consistently bigger than Shavers
And you could say the same think about Frazier. Could take a lot of beating, gets demolished by Foreman at 2nd round.
People always whining about Larry Holmes never getting favors. That's not true. He got a BIG favor here. A veteran fighter of Ken Norton's status, if champion, will not usually have his title taken if it is a matter of 1 point.
Criminally underated norton
I love your voice in your voice. You have a epic booming voice. Love your videos.
Larry Holmes was really good
If the Ali decisions and this fight going in his favor, Ken Norton could easily have gone down as one of the best ever. He is tragically unsung.
I doubt there's a current heavyweight champ or contender that Larry couldn't easily destroy.
Ken Norton was underrated as was Ernie Shavers.
An absolute nightmare to score. But a fight every boxing fan should take the time to score. More than once.
I think that was one of the greatest 15 rounds in boxing history; 2men going at it tooth and nail.

I believe that Larry Holmes is the most under rated heavyweight ever
Ken nortan the black Hercules...lerry Holmes the most underrated HW in boxing history..Both were great..
Larry never given the respect he deserved. Claiming Rocky Marciano couldn't carry his jockstrap didn't help him any!!
You could say Norton beat Ali 3x and Holmes too.
Watching this and realizing Sylvester Stalion was in the audience tells you what kind of fight it was
I'm still trying to imagine a Prime Foreman going up against Larry Holmes, consider he whooped Norton in 2 rounds but lost to Ali in 8
Larry Holmes is one of the best

All I know I watch all your videos and need more please love your work man
Hardest hitter of all time accord to George Forman : ken norton who I believed fractured George’s rib during the fight.
@everyday tenor I’m referencing what George said in the autobiography. But I’m aware in interviews he mention Ron Lyle as one of the hardest also.
It’s mad to think Ali went in with shavers In 75 as some sort of tune up
I saw this live as a kid.
0:00 Yes, Ali-Wepner went to the final round, but it was not by any means a close fight. I think that people naturally get it confused with Balboa-Creed I, which WAS a close fight.
@Rhythm Boxing do you have a video covering Ernie Chaviers
There weren't any winners that night but the fans
Larry Holmes most underrated boxer I've had the pleasure to watch box.
I have a great admiration for Ken Norton. Even though his boxing career was subpar, he still was formidable and always presented a challenge to any opponent. My intrigue goes a lil' south for Norton because of his magnificent performance in his role in the movie "MANDINGO". One of my all time classic movies. Norton was brilliant playing Mandingo.
Hey you missed Shavers dropping Holmes and Holmes getting up.

What a great fight 🕯🕯🕯
If I ever have to out on my shield I hope I can show half the heart as these two warriors...
Add to the contest that later Norton will lose to Shavers by KO
kenneth norton was a gunnery sergeant of marines
Those people were not ordinary men. I think they were more than gladiators.
Holmes was a great champion he just had a tough act to follow (Ali) as for his fight with Kenny old school the fight was so close as Norton was champ he should have gotten the nod

Any doubt that Larry Holmes was one of the great heavyweights can be put to rest here.
Bro … Why younger Duran is fighting older Duran in the intro
Norton deserved nothing less than a draw against Holmes.
That Ali wasn’t the same. Remember that a few years before that it will be a totally different story
