Not everyone in the cast wanted the show to end. Morey Amsterdam and Rose Marie, for instance. Rose Marie has stated over and over again in interviews how she wished the series has continued into CBS' color era, which began in Sept. 1966 -- right after "The Dick Van Dyke Show" ended. Former child star Rose Marie had had many ups and downs in her career and treasured the hard-to-find success of the series. Except for Mary Tyler Moore, the careers of the series' stars all declined after 1966.

They ended the Mary Tyler Moore show under the same reasoning. Mary Tyler Moore has she said she didn't want either that one or the Dick Van Dyke show to end.
Not sure why Dick Van Dyke thought he had to "keep his mouth shut." Reiner seems to be under the impression more people agreed with him on ending the show than really did. I think Rose Marie also said she believes Dick Van Dyke wanted to leave the show to do movies. But everyone also says Reiner told them when the show started that he would end it after 5 years. I get the feeling Dick Van Dyke would've continued the show if Reiner asked him to, but he was just as enthusiastic about moving on to do more movies, so he didn't fight Reiner on this.
