- Carl Reiner, legendary creator of THE DICK VAN DYKE SHOW, co-writer of THE JERK, and much, much more, talks about his personal history as a writer. Interviewed by Del Reisman. Filmed on May 11, 1995.
This is an amazing interview. Inspiring to any writer. How can you not be a fan of his?
Carl Reiner. A Genius.
Comedy.....serious business for funny people. I could listen to him for days.
At 91, he's amazing. Long may you reign, Carl. Thanks for uploading.
The great Carl Reiner is now closing in on 95...truly a man for all seasons, and putting aside his prodigious talents, more importantly a completely decent man...you can give no higher praise.....
This interview is just a gold mine, for those that have ears to hear it. For instance, as he alludes at minute 20, the 3 cam live audience forced held the writer and performer accountable for every laugh. It had to be real. A laugh track was just too easy to get lazy. I'm putting my morning on hold, just to watch this interview. Thanks for posting it. Oh, and as an aside, there was a quality of the talent that existed in the 60s that is long since gone. Look at the cast of the Dick Van Dyke Show.
Pure gold. Thanks for doing this interview.
Better than any college class out there.
Kindly, does a writer present his evolving. The hows. The steps. Pure gold for any current writers. Tune into this resource for continued motivation, inspiration.
Once again...wisdom...understanding the human condition...it's priceless.
Listening to Carl reminded me to go an order the 'My Favourite Year' DVD and what fun it was to watch.
" You can't look at the past forever 'cause you'll never get to work." That's my cue.
one of best single episodes in the history of TV.......Laura Petrie tells the world Alan Brady is bald....Carl is out of this world spectacular.....
Rest in powerful peace 🙏

Rosanne has left reality and is now firmly in batshit crazy land.
Wow.
"The real deal" ..
He's got this charisma - and charm
My mother babysat for Carl in the 60s and wrote a letter back home to her parents describing how she didn't have to do anything except watch Rob & I enjoy playing.
Piling onto an actual situation, adding to original ideas, starting with imagination, fitting in with your peers, fighting for Your product, having a good support system, choosing the right characters. Remaining fluid in all situations. Traits of a good writer, director as explained by Mr. Carl Reiner.
Like how he described the role of the designated typist. You can see how he worked that into the Alan Brady writer's room. It was usually Sally.
Love this. It’s like a seminar in writing and creativity.
