  • I stumbled across this amazing place and wanted to share it...it's an Oasis in Peru that is located in one of the driest deserts on Earth. It's called Huacahina, and is now on my list of top places to visit. What do you think of the place? Comment with your thoughts.

Two hundred meters below you lays a dreamy desert lagoon ringed by exotic palm trees, and furnished with a clutch of rustic yet suitably elegant hotels.

Doesn't that place have duststorms, as it is surrounded by sanddunes on three sides so i guess there is high probability of dust storms

Its a lagoon, the water has almost no circulation. Its not "dirty" green, its algal green due to anoxia.

Because land has carrying capacity, you can't just plant trees in a desert. Read the research on how ground water level has dropped because of forced afforestation in China. No i'm not here to spread conspiracies, but this is basic environmental geology. Trees don't naturally grow in deserts for specified reasons, forcing them to grow means you are asking for these plants to suck moisture off ground water, this leads to drop in ground water levels similar to over pumping of ground water in cities. This "over-pumping" by trees in the deserts leaves the ground water table in desert almost to very low levels, considering there is almost no real precipitation in these deserts, the aquifer of ground water never gets filled (takes a very very long time). This leads to production of certain traps in deserts which are of less concern but will mainly lead to desertification to the maximum as even the harshest desert growing plants will find it impossible to grow there as there is no ground water access.
Planting more trees in this area in Peru will lead to using up off the oasis water and eventual desertification.
Plant trees in forests not in deserts!
Convert agricultural and commercial land with forest potential into forests by planting trees for example the monsoonal areas. Thailand cut down 48% of its mangrove population for fisheries and crop cultivation, convert these lands back to Forest by planting trees not deserts....

don't be rude Vietnam why? There is plenty of land, it's not an overpopulated country like China.

Ze Hydra Very interesting information. What do you say about the steppe zone. Is it possible to plant trees there?
By the way, I do not know about the African and Arabian deserts, but in the cold deserts of Central Asia, there are some very drought-resistant trees. For example, saxaul, which requires the most minimal moisture, and which can grow in highly saline soils.
