  • Eleven countries are planting a wall of trees from east to west across Africa, just under the southern edge of the Sahara desert.
    The goal is to fight the effects of climate change by reversing desertification.

      We would have enough money to build the wall on the border, to do things like this and have medical and college paid for. Problem is people in this country are too stupid to do anything about it.

    Interestingly, in other areas, like bordering the Chihuahuan desert, it's grasses that protect the soil and allow water to flow into the earth instead of washing away. Restoring wet lands there often involves clearing trees that shade out the native grasses and re-seeding the grasslands.

      Matthew Smith true that does happen I believe it's 4000 bucks to buy healthy black person but you have to look at the cause of that in the aggression towards each other which is poverty. Slavery is supplied mainly by people who cannot pay the travel fees to get out of the country and the killing is over what limited resources can be found. So accepting this making land more prosperous helps address both those problems at the same time it is far more effective than just sending them a few bags of rice over long term.

    In my country Morocco in North West Africa the sand is moving and destroying little villages there is acacia trees but not a lot. The weather is much more harder than is countries like our brothers in Senegal. They are in the Sahel region, and we are in the Sahara. Most of the time there is not rain for 3 years so it would be difficult to raise new acacias. The adult acacias can survive because they find water deep 60 meters under sand. But I hope one day the Sahara would be a large Savannah and maybe a forest like at the time of the first imazighen people (our first ancestors in North Africa, with ancient Egyptians). 👍🏽

    • @ColinTherac117

      The initial costs won't matter all that much if the return on the investment in the form of arable land that produces useful agricultural products is greater than other investment options. If this is the case, then this project will be a sustainable and common sense example of how environmentalism should work.

      The belt is stated to be planned as 8'000x15 Km (5'000x10 miles), or 120'000 square kilometers to host 11'000'000 trees - around 90 trees and 67'000$ per square kilometer. 750$ per tree is the figure. But that includes the salaries! The operation is jobs-based. EDIT: scrap the data, as one user noted the 11'000'000 should be the value /for Senegal only/. If the area for Senegal will be of 500x15 = 7'500 Km, they plan to plant 1'500 trees per square kilometer, in a virtual grid of a tree every 25 meters. So the rough estimation for the total amount of trees is 180 million, or less than 50$ per tree.

So yes Sahara is important for Amazon, but that dosen't mean you need bigger Sahara every year and more desertification. The wind can carry only limited amount of dust and sand anyway. Sahara is pushing further north and south where everything used to be more green how is that good?

    • @trystanswansonart
      @trystanswansonart 5 років тому

      well the issues is trees need water, and adding trees may retain more water for them to consume, its still just a hot dry place... there are theories for building huge forests/jungles in northern africa to fight climate change but there would need to be huge pumps off the coast that can also filter to fresh water, so its a big task that way and would require a lot of first world countries contributing
