It's not the isolated oasis that BBC would like you to believe. There are 16 more lakes in the surrounding dunes. Also many cities less than 20km away. Coordinates 26 8191942 lat 13 5145905 lon.
Valken Great locating! There are also many building remains of the tribes lived around the lakes. It has much more lives in the desert than people normally think.
I miss watching documentaries like this on discovery channel, now it's plagued with overhauling shows and survival reality shows
Alaska shows galore
David Attemborough has got you covered bro
CsStoker it still plays on BBC and natgeo wild
At least they're not putting pawn shop shows.
We're so lucky that we grew up listening to this great man's voice and watching his documentaries.
2:48 is one of the most beautiful footage captures I‘ve ever seen
For the amount of money that top quality slow motion cameras cost, it may as well be.
Man, that lake is like something out of a nightmare! Imagine being lost in the desert, and you come across this. Forced to eat flies while the waves tempt you to drink the salty water.
Or you could just eat the birds
if yoiu can catch any of them* XD
pretend to be a fly
Buzz buzz.
Well at least you will survive , flies = water + proteins . 😄😄😄😄😄, hope they taste good
And I complain about one damn fly being in my house
Fly swatter is armed and ready for action! Begin the sealing protocol, leave no one alive!
In that first panning shot over the desert, i half expected to see Jabba's sail barge

That narrator??? It's only Sir David Attenborough

Ah !you British with your Sir This Sir That. Unbearable

Sorry, he doesn't read trash.
Who else thought that the flies would eat the birds
Because of the title and thumbnails, I thought the "sea" was just an impossibly massive swarm of locusts with blue, reflective exoskeletons, and when birds land to try to get a drink, the locusts would swarm and devour the birds.
@@trenvert123 yup
me..i wanted to chng the video then😬😬😬
I thought the BIRDS would eat the FLIES.
I thought birds would die of poison then it will be the food for those flies. That’s why there is thriving population of flies.
now I know what to do if I come across a salty oasis
Eat the birds
😂😂

I lived in the Sahara for a while and it was all like this; everything was beautiful, but designed to inflict misery and death. During the day the heat was unbearable; then, at night it got frigid. During the hot season I once got a temperature reading of 140F. After the hot season came dust storms that could make the daytime look like nighttime. Next came the rains which brought dangerous flooding and clouds of insects. Bugs, however, were actually less of a problem than thorns, which came in every size and seemed to be produced by every single plant. The sand came in these amazing colors that formed gorgeous dunes; unfortunately, it got into everything and made both walking and driving difficult or impossible. As far as water was concerned, there was never enough, getting it usually involved a great deal of work, as did making it safe to drink, a process which typically took days.
Honestly, I always thought the people who lived in and around the Sahara, with the exception of those along the Atlantic coast, would be better off simply relocating.
If you are ever thinking about going to visit a desert, don't underestimate it because that was the thing that got most people killed.

I would laugh and cry at the same time
you can eat the birds
obamer, l think that would be aweful. Just imagine, fly pie, a gourmet dish, cooked in salt water all from local sources.
Hahahahahha
Crazy how everything synchronizes. Water from desert, salt water allows flies to drink, flies allow the birds to drink. It's so perfectly placed in such a way that you can't even dare imagine what will happen if one of the order started to crumble.

Never tired to hear Sir Attenborough's voice after all these years :-)

Juat as bad as the salt water
@@Alex-ko4vh no it's not lol your kidneys are literally the best filters on this planet. What's the difference between the flies blood and your urine? Your urine is simply filtered blood, and totally drinkable. People have survived in the woods for weeks with nothing but their urine. Do some research kid.
@@user-mq1up2fw4r
Weeks? Haha you gotta be joking. 1-3 days at best before it becomes to concentrated and the other 5% of gases that are released in your urine cause health problems.

science, please keep Attenborough alive so I can watch documentaries in the future. without him its not bearable
Check out the narration Tony Baker does, and have a laugh or three. Or Randall narrating The Honey Badger (Don't Care) video.

The oasis name is Om Almaa. Mother of Water!
In libya ?
I think it would be better suited if was called Mother of Flies
The video gives the impression that this oasis is hundreds of miles from nowhere, but in fact, when you look at the map, it's just a few miles from a long strip of heavily populated villages and towns. There are even shopping malls. I think we can take it for granted that water is supplied to these inhabited areas by canal, and there must be plenty of ponds here and there.
DieFlabbergast Thanks for the information
Makes sense. My mother is a salty bitch as well.
I imagine the flies would be like naturally occurring crunchy gushers, exploding with fresh water in my beak.
No, their fluids are just less salty. They would taste terrible.
Lajos Winkler But maybe if you were a bird, you know, compared with the other things on the bird menu, they would be gushers. Especially after flying for days?
geinikan1kan Absolutely.
Mmm, freshly squeezed fly juice. Sounds delicious, my mouth is watering.

I like it. Kinda epic..
like the deadly Oasis, but the birds managed to turn a negative situation with the poisonous water in to a positive one with the flies' filtered water! 😊
Meg Arithamea nature always finds a way
It’s God the almighty who taught those birds how to get their sustenance.
Its like if I walked into this oasis dehydrated but there turned out to be a massive crop of watermelon
Poisonous to whom? The flies live of it, and the birds live of the flies. It's not fresh water, but if you put a salt water fish in a fresh water pound, it will die. Is fresh water poisonous then?
Just Droot There are actually poisonous watermelons that grow in the desert tho because of high alkalinity, like cacti juice.

Amazing.
The natural wealth of our world is all the wonder I need in this life. Sure there are other things which interest me and which I value greatly, but it alone would be enough. The thought that we have, and could still destroyed so much of these processes that took many millions, even billions of years to develop horrifies me.

It was not going to stay like that forever either way. As you said, it took millions of years to get that way, therefore, millions of years before that it didn't even exist. Change is the only constant in the universe/life.
Water of death, insects of life, speaking to a birds' intelligence.
Beautiful! Love Attenborough's narration. :)
I really don't think we Canadians would survive more than an hour in these temperatures, lol
Honest. I have seen it about 50°C this July in western Africa across the Sahara, Saudi Arabia and Iran. But. You are not alone in thinking you may not be able to survive as did you notice the absence of the native population.
Michael Greenwood There is not a single place in Canada where the uv heat index goes higher than 50°C tho. Go south wards to the prairies and you might find reasonable hot temps.
Sorry I just added place names, Africa etc. I didn't mean in Canada.
I'm from Florida, I would think its nice and dry there.
After some time to adapt you could handle it.
Where I work sometimes we would test equipment in high temperatures. Highest air temperature was 52 Celsius. Isn't comfy but it's not bad.

"Swallow, Swallow, little Swallow," said the Prince, "will you not stay with me one night longer?"
"It is winter," answered the Swallow, "and the chill snow will soon be here. In Egypt the sun is warm on the green palm-trees, and the crocodiles lie in the mud and look lazily about them. My companions are building a nest in the Temple of Baalbec, and the pink and white doves are watching them, and cooing to each other. Dear Prince, I must leave you, but I will never forget you, and

The more I think about it the more I realize what a wonderful example of adaptation this is. No doubt swallows have been crossing the Sahara every year for tens or hundreds of thousands of years, ever since the ancient period(s) when it was much wetter. These birds were able to adapt to the slow drying trend, even when it got down to the minute quantity contained in the local flies! But I'm sure the number of swallows able to successfully migrate is far, far less than in the remote past... And surely many other migratory bird species became extinct due to Sahara desertification.
I love how pulling giant assumptions out of thin air is called science. Evolution is the biggest hoax ever perpetrated. The Sahara is 4000 years old.
@@RuminatingWizard May I ask you a question? Why do you look the way you do? I mean this not in an insulting way, but you look the way you do due to being the offspring of your mother and father, correct? So clearly, you have become who you are as a result of the shared traits of your parents. And following this logic, they got their traits from their parents correct? Well, is it outlandish to say the same could be said about animals? Animals are after all born from 2 parents from which they have recieved traits from. Now lets imagine ther are 3 frogs who live in a tree. One is green, another blue, and the last is pink. Now imagine you're tring to look for them in this tree. Which would you most likely find first? Odds are, you'd find the pink or blue one because they stand out whereas the green frog is harder to find among the green foliage. Now imagine you're a hungry bird and just found 2 frogs to snack on. They die and leave the last frog who's still hiding. Life goes on and he comes across another frog and breeds with her, have little frog babies, and his traits are passed onto his kids, who are also now green. Now, there are more green frogs than blue and pink ones right? Because the other two frogs didn't have a chance to mate and pass down their pretty colors before they were eaten. This is evolution. It's not animals magically becoming new animals. It's that the animals that reproduce the most have the most offspring and have their traits passed down the most. This is evolution. I hope this makes sense.
That's very nice to see my country libya 🇱🇾 this call ( mother of water ) in desert and there are many .
