- Modified battle! It's time to settle this once and for all as these two AWD, turbo-charged 4 cylinder cars go head to head in a final battle. Fighting it out is a modified Mitsubishi EVO9 and a 'Stage 3+' Golf R, both making 280KW at the wheels.
Who will win? Which car is faster? And who will have their dreams crushed...

This was the funniest and most relevant ending to a MCM I've seen in a long time team cannot froth harder for future vids. Every time I see a vid I think when is the magic going to change but holy jesus it just keeps shape shifting into better and more relevant vids each time.

A highway pull is not the same comparison. Marty is referring to always keeping the car in the 4k+ rev range. After a pull you put it back into overdrive and cruise again.
On a racetrack you're in 2nd/3rd a lot and usually not shifting past 4th unless you're on a really long straight away.
Me: driving to work at 5k Rpm doing 60-70mph around 20mph corners.......wait WOT!!!!!

My integra type R sits at 3500rpm in 5th at 100kph, so uhh... Yeah. Me.

I change gear at 4500 rpm, but then again, iam driving a Octavia RS Diesel so it's just before rev limit.
I drive an N46 E90 320i and I rarely change gears below the 3,5-4k RPM

EVO. For the reason it's more enjoyable to drive vs the Golf. A more visceral driving experience.

evo 9 technology being compared to 2019 tceh? Ones analogue ones digital. considering the tech gap the evo still gives the newer car a fright even with the handicap of a stickshift and a guy who cant do a slingshot launch.
I thought it was faster, personally. The Golf R guy got butthurt and tried to make it sound like he won. Even on the first run, the EVO was right on his tail the entire time. The EVO definitely(surprisingly) won the standup because it was able to create such a big gap in front of the Golf R.

The Evo9 is and will always be my favourite car. It’s just such a beautiful motor, with a great race pedigree. Will forever be my dream car and I hope one day I will afford it. (24 and no where near lol)

@@trayner Yet I'll still be sticking to Dunlop RT Sport Maxx 2's and if I want anything better I'd go to Continental tyres. Bridgestone was more slippery in the wet from my experience.

Somehow this looks like a understeering Golf and a short shifted Evo to me.
Evos have notoriously short gear ratios and final drives.
Ok lets carify; he is in no way pushing the evo.
He can easily keep in rev range with better shifts... but as you see the transmission on the evo is likely worn- having some bad shifts into 3rd.
The dsg is great and does that for you....until it breaks and becomes a very expensive bill.
@@westsideaccord Correct. It is no secret that Marty and Moog are rather "average" in terms of their ability on the track. So yes, a more seasoned driver would easily be able to do better in both cars.
That said, the Golf is obviously easier to drive. Therefore it leaves Marty with a handicap and still outperforming the Golf when he was leading. The evo still won regardless, so no need to make excuses for the evo. The only thing the Golf has on the evo is the ability to launch harder off the line.

The EVO9 AWC system is actually far more sophisticated than the Golf. The EVO7-X have active centre diff and active torque vectoring rear diff with full ECU yaw control, 3 axis accelerometer, wheel speed sensors, steering angle and brake sensor.

Goes to show how advanced that evo’s AWD system is, Way ahead of it’s time
Still amazed that they cannot seem to make an AWD car that can handle corners better then the evo did back in the 90s-early 00s. You would think with all the modern innovations that someone would be able to. That car is still a BEAST on any short track.

I really wanted to hear the cars from outside the cabin.
The Golf R was soundly destroyed. Had the race carried on for a few more laps it would have been embarrassing. There was no comparison on the track.
My personal preference would be the evo. The manual may be slower for track driving but at that power level rowing your own gears is just so much more fun to me.

I reckon if the golf was a manual like the evo, then the evo would have won by a very big gap. Gd way to put manual and dsg against each other with same power & tyres tho.
I just commented on this above but you are right, it was interesting. I cannot see the downside of DSG. No matter how good you are, your gear changes will always be slow in a manual.
@@joshuarosen6242 If you're a pleb and don't know how to change gears properly sure. A gated shifter won't be as quick obviously, but you can get pretty close.
@@janemba42 but you do not have tp beat the piss out of a dsg to shift it so incredibly fast. It is designed to do so. However that said honda makes the best manual transmission ever.
janemba42 Even modern torque converter autos are quicker than a manual these days. Comparing a DSG to a manual is about 0.1 seconds vs at least 0.5 seconds and you still run the risk of missing a gear change. The DSG is easy to use, quick and reliable and works well in full auto and manual mode and you cannot damage it with a dodgy shift. I cannot see any benefits to a gated manual.
Enjoyment is the benefit. At the end of the day having a fast car is about fun. You’re not actually getting anywhere faster, there’s no actual practical element to having a faster car in the real world. And even if you do track days you’re not racing anyone, no street car is turning up to the grid at a real racing event you’re just driving for driving’s sake.
You buy a manual because it’s more fun, the engagement of shifting for yourself adds to the experience.
Arguably there’s a legal benefit as well. Modern cars are fast, and getting faster as speed limits largely stay the same and enforcement gets stricter.
Speed is becoming both more accessible and more punishable. The sensation of speed however is free game, so it’s not without reason to prioritize cars that emphasize feeling and sensation over empirical performance. Manuals tend to help with that.
