There are fixes on the way for all the issues mentioned, but the ID-platform has taken a lot of effort to be..not broken. However, good news, the infotainment is basically the same in the fossil models, and the root cause of most of it. (VAG-techie)
One point regarding the infotainment controls: Volkswagen has announced it is reverting to physical controls. If that isn’t a big enough back-track to show they messed it up, I don’t know what is.
There are only a few things that need physical knobs, and every manufacturer that has done touch only has gone back to physical buttons at least for the volume knob, and some for climate controls. Glad to hear this though for the 8.5 maybe?
I heard the people involved with the infotainment have been sacked.. Rightly so.. I had the 7.5 and was ready to buy Mk 8 and VW lost a sale because of it !
I’m from the uk and there is an elderly man I wouldn’t like to assume his age but I’m fairly sure he’s 70 + who drives a modified one of these to the local shop every morning always puts a smile on my face to see an elderly gentlemen going down the road making mad turbo noises 😂
I know theres an old guy in the UK whos name is Arthur he has a 500whp MK7 R, as well as a M135i. If you search "Arthur Officially Gassed" youll find it on youtube.
I bought a 2023 20th anniversary edition and the infotainment/sos computer had to be swapped out due to the carplay functions etc, now perfect, no issues at all. Love my R.
As an owner of MK7 GTI, Past owner of a MK6 GTI, and having a 1960 Bug Convertible in the family, I am a little biased to VW. I have always seen VW's as the underdog. In this day and age where faster cars are becoming the "norm" this Golf R is amazing. With the Civic R, Corolla GR and the Golf R, the Golf R is the only one that actually looks like it cost what it costs. People then will argue reliability? That is very subjective at best. I mean, a Golf that can go from 0-60 in under 4 seconds and run 12's in the 1/4 mile STOCK??? That is freaking amazing!!
Great review. I've had my MK8 for 5ish months and it's been back to the dealership 6 times now. I can see the appeal, however personally - I wish I never bought it. Hearing 'it's a new platform there's bound to be issues/teething problems' drives me crazy, and is unacceptable for a car at this price point IMO.
It's very interesting to see that a lot of the issues raised in this video for the Mk.8 Golf also were transferred to the new Seat Leon which is essentially the golf just reskinned and rebranded. I have a fair few of the issues you've raised there like the infotainment issues, random warnings etc and it was making me wonder if the issues were just related to the car having to not be as good as the golf counterpart, however now I've noticed it's a generic issue and solidifies my thoughts to not get a 'new' VAG and potentially get an older car next time. Thanks for your honest views on the car and it's nice to know that not everybody can be paid off just to say "This car is great".
Great film! At the end I was thinking "Marty needs to do a video like this too" and seconds later the door opens with Marty talking ****. Oh man I love this show, please never change or stop!
Heya Moog, we've got a Mk VIII GTI and one of the updates to the car gave us the option to disable the comfort seat movement bit, so perhaps an update from the dealer will grant your R that option.
Picked up my R at the end of January of this year. Can confirm, the comfort seat movement switch does work in mine. However, I'm in NA. Not sure if that makes any difference.
I'm gonna get a mk8R "wagon" after a few years of fixing the small problems, perfect daily driver with a perfect amount of power to daily drive. They've been for sale in europe for some time but i might wait a year or two before i get one. Seems like amazing daily drivers for those who wants a new car that is fast and practical
MK7 GTI 6spd original owner here. Currently has over 183k miles on it. Has been tuned and modified since 2k miles. Moog is absolutely correct regarding the MK7's. They are excellent cars but they are quite boring and soft from the factory. You have to do basically everything to it for it to be super fun. Tune, intake (modified stock), DP, intercooler, spark plugs, ignition coils, tires, suspension, turbo, etc. It takes a lot to get the car to a level that is extremely fun to drive. The MK8, though it has its infotainment issues (the MK8.5 has remedied this), is so much better right out of the box. Honestly, the MK8 Golf R has enough power straight from the factory, that I personally wouldn't feel the need to tune it right away to have a lot of fun with it. That was not the case with my MK7 GTI (even the MK7 Golf R needs more power over factory to enjoy it). If you want a slight bump in power on the MK8, you could go the cheap route, and get a piggyback tune, and have a ton of fun with it, especially knowing it won't void the factory warranty. The MK8's also have the handling and braking performance straight from the factory so that you don't need to upgrade everything to get it more track focused. I would probably do lowering springs on it, just for the looks, but that's about it. Overall, the MK8 GTI/Golf R is a much better performer over the MK7/7.5. I totally would have got a MK8 Golf R, but I personally didn't like the layout, look, ergonomics, or how the infotainment performed. That was the reason why I wanted to wait for the MK8.5 refresh, and from what I see, I really like what VW did with the infotainment design. The Black Edition looks amazing. Can't wait to go test drive one and maybe, just maybe, sell my MK7 GTI for one.
I’d love for you guys to do a Passat 206 TSI R Line build - combine the golf R with supergramps 🤷🏼♂️🤣 Keep doing what you’re doing! Love everything you do 💪🏻
a VR6 build would be soo fun to see. doesn't even have to be an older one, i wouldnt mind seeing what they could do with something like my Passat GT with the 3.6 VR
A review is cool. For all 10 subscribers who can afford a 2022 golf r 😁 be great to see affordable/common cars modified, like the old days, maybe a series alongside the newer and rarer cars
Great review, thank you. The biggest compliment I can give the Golf R is it's on my list of more dad appropriate fun cars to replace a 6th gen supercharged Camaro. The few things I don't like are that they went with blue for the accent color, I wish they would have stuck with red like the GTI. They know how to do classy wider fenders like on the Audi RS models, that would have made the looks much less boring/safe. The infotainment stuff is getting addressed so that's good. Definitely gives and takes between this car and the GR Corolla.

12:42-13:48 - as a father of two, this is probably the most important piece of information in the video to me, thanks for sharing. My IS350 moves the steering wheel away when you turn the car off and presents it to you when you turn it on, I think that's a better solution in a smaller car, meanwhile my wifes Sorento moves the seat when you turn it off/on but it isn't an issue because it's a massive 3-row CUV.
Not everything needs to be buttonless, even on phones iPhones have kept a dedicated button for volume, locking and mute/ring , just like my Oneplus. That beeing said it's just a balancing act to find what to keep and what to make touch. Awesome video guys 10/101
Love the Mk4 R32 but, if i were to criticize, it was more weight, noise, trim, and looks than real performance. I ran an R trackday back in the day in my basic 5-speed 1.8T and yeah I was down a couple cylinders but I was also down about 600 pounds and the performance ended up being similar but I ended the day with nearly all of my tires and brakes left and the R32s were falling by the wayside left and right with tires chunked to the cord and warped/destroyed brakes, because a cast iron VR6 sounds great but is hard to stop and turn. It was an interesting lesson. That said, I drove a Mk4 R32 near new and it was a delight!
About 7 months ago I was in fact looking to purchase a mk8 golf r, however at that point no dealerships had any to drive nor pricing etc, but I ended up buy a BMW M135ixdrive instead, and to be honest im glad I did the fit and finish is second to none, but on the negative side you can't really tune these things as yet, which at times Id like to have the golf in that instance, as I believe underground performance have tuned one with amazing results. Both are great cars, either choice would of suited my needs as a daily while carrying an MTB on the roof. Great work gents💪
Bold of Moog to believe that pricing will ever come down again. I was looking for a new car this year and ended up ordering a new Hyundai i30N Premium Hatch. Still waiting for it to be delivered but I just didn't want to pay the "Euro tax" for one of these.
I reckon the i30N has mad cool factor... I know they're FWD but there's something about cars that "shouldn't" go fast being really really fast that's just awesome.
It's worth the wait. Those cars are mad, honestly packed full of features just FWD vs AWD of the R. They're cornering monsters I kid you not. My mate has one currently getting tuned (after driving it stock for over 10k miles in 3 months). Turbo elbow, 4in Forge intake and it made a very easy 330bhp/500nm after the tune (300/449 without the tune). Drove a 7.5, they're great, no doubt great. Always loved Golfs. But it was very bland. It was quick, but didn't have much of a fun factor, especially compared to the i30N. The i30N can be tame or a beast when you need it, but the Golf R just felt very controlled at all times. Not a bad thing. It's an amazing car, but it's like they did everything so well on the car, everything is perfectly balanced to the point it just feels like white paint on walls in a new build house. Of course they mod terribly well, but I'm talking stock for stock as many people keep theirs stock, even enthusiasts.
@@daysandwords Yeah exactly right! Marty made a throwaway comment in a previous video about the i30N “only” being FWD and tbh it smacked a bit of elitism but I’ve driven them a few times prior to ordering mine and it’s a sick little car, I’m so excited to be getting it…when it eventually arrives 😂
I owned a blue golf 7R variant, about the same time moog had his white golf 7R.. I bought a rare version of a white Lotus Exige S2, 2 weeks later moog got his black exige S2... he sold his, i still have mine. But... I also needed a new daily so i went for a white golf 8R... In the same week i got mine, moog comes with a video of his new golf 8R. This is getting beyond coincidence...

@@HunterSydenhamRacing same. Keep it simple, analogue and REAL. What’s with the fake drift mode?! Driving is becoming a lost skill. Lane assist, parking sensors, cameras … We have EYES!
@Nelsonic those who buy "R" golf models get ripped into because of how easy the car is to drive an a boring experience. Its a good car in terms of performance but the cool factor is that of a prius
@Nelsonic ah just seen your profile picture. Sorry if I offended you dude! Great car but cool factor is that of a prius. No I have not driven one but seen an heard the fart cannons many times
MOOG, I've got 1 of 1400 in USA. let me say that this is on of the best VW's I ever owned. it took a week to get comfortable with the screen. I have bumped the steering wheel heat button and had the sensor's for parking not initialize, but after turning the car off and picking up food, when I restarted everything was back to normal. The backup camera was replaced. WOULD I BUY THIS CAR AGAIN??? HELL YEAH!!!
I’ve had mine for about six months also, I also live in Sydney and have only seen two others on the road. I have received the email regarding the radiator recall and will be getting that sorted soon. The other issues have been the Apple CarPlay blackout when using maps, I also had a safety system light on for one drive. A couple of things that bug me is the steering wheel heating turning on when I don’t need it, no ability to have stop/start deactivated permanently, having to turn lane assist off every time also, the cheap plastics in the rear (I’m never in there but still annoying), I would have liked the cup holder cover like the mk7. The plus are that it finally gets the power of the UK car (I’m English so when I bought my mk6 then 7 I was unhappy to get so much less power). The car looks much more aggressive and sets itself apart from the GTI, pleased the Aussie version comes fully loaded. It’s seriously fast when you need it to be but having driven to Melbourne recently it also does the mundane very well and comfortable. I got my new from a dealer for list price, still too much but in this current climate better than its main rivals. I wouldn’t have paid the overs they were/are up for sale. Happy with my first six months which is currently at 7,000kms…fully run in now 😂😂
I've got a 2023 Mk8 Golf R (in the 6 speed manual!) here in Canada and I have the driver seat easy exit set to off and it does work for me. I'm wondering if it's quirk on the right hand drive (or Aussie) cars.
It probably is (and in Britain too). But it's a massively dangerous issue, not just for people's legs but also for the idea that you would have to leave a toddler someone not strapped in while you started the car.
@@daysandwords Oh! I get why it's a problem (and why I shut it off on mine) just wanted to share that the disable does seem to be working for me (in a different market).
I also have the MK8R in Sydney and can confirm I have not seen a single other one on the road! Sure it has some teething issues but my word, what performance and what a car VW have built.
Heya Moog, with the ECU's being recently unlocked, would you consider getting a custom tune? (prior to the big companies releasing their tuning packages)
Best Mk8 R video to date. But JFYI, Hard press on the R button puts you in Race mode as we know, Light press each time cycles through all modes. Kind of !
I’m watching before work sitting in my MK7 GTI. I’ve got my argon welding bottle in the back to go get refilled later. These really are great all around cars.
At any trim level the Golf has bloody good handling. My Mark 7.5 Trendline has 3 “driving” modes (dsg, sport and tiptronic) and I’ve found the handling to be pretty good. My girl loves corners.
Fantastic video! I was very surprised to see a MK8 R in Tasmania the day after your first video on it, couldn't believe my eyes. Since then I've seen multiple different MK8 R's in Tassie surprisingly.
Thanks heaps. I bought my Mk 8 in July (traded a 2020 RSQ3) and I love it. There are some frustrations, but the pros by far out way the cons and even after paying a premium price. I am not unhappy with my purchase. It's one of those cars that become part of you.
Gimme the RS3 all day everyday! That engine note does it hands down regardless of cost difference! The Golf R doesn’t sound terrible, but it definitely doesn’t sound better than meh.
I started working for VW a few months back going in with the idea VW's were great cars, like 90% of German made cars when i was growing up. These days tho i would rather any Japanese base model with a clutch pedal over a $150k+ Toureg fully optioned out or a MK8 Golf R as i find the purity of driving and enjoying the drive and feel of a car is with that third pedal that seems to be fading in today's release of "performance" cars. Thats just my thoughts tho
Spot On!, after 20 months with my Mk8R..i still can´t find any more fun, fast and practical on the market.. And soon with stage 1 tune and 400hp.. This will be the Best hothatch ever ( daily and some fun on track ).. ;)

@@EvoBeard wow great comment! Seeing that has me even more excited for getting mine!
Wooh! Bring on the VAG battles!
5:10 Sneaky Rick Roll.
Sick Video!
🔥🔥🔥
Theres has been a new winch delivered, is the best 4wd channel coming back!?!
Looking forward to hear that contrasting side of story on the mk8 golf R :D
I owned a blue golf 7R variant, about the same time moog had his white golf 7R..
I bought a rare version of a white Lotus Exige S2, 2 weeks later moog got his black exige S2... he sold his, i still have mine.
But... I also needed a new daily so i went for a white golf 8R... In the same week i got mine, moog comes with a video of his new golf 8R.
This is getting beyond coincidence...
Drunk AF about to be waking up in 5 hours for a 9 hour drive and a Mighty Car Mods video comes up! Who needs sleeps!
Didn’t ask
Try not to die 👍
Don't drive you knob! Not worth it
(Coming from an idiot that lost his licence twice for drink driving)
Yeah admitting drink driving just means you’re a dick, get outta here
drive safe man
Thank you mighty car mods for not promoting tiny plots of land in Scotland for a stupid title and ball shaving technology. Id much rather the savoury, jammy goodness of Cheryl's mystery box any day
Can we get a video like this for the gr yaris please? Amazing videos guys!
Best 4x4 off-road driving channel on the interballs.
Seems like a sweet ride for an achievable dream car. And the ending... SO READY FOR THE NEXT VIDEO!
Would be great to see special guests from other UA-cam channels from around the world.
Humble mechanic comes to mind 🤠🤙
I would pick the Yaris over the golf any day of the week, way cooler car.
Yup, golf gone downhill since changing to R from R32
Honestly same, Im might be old school but I reckon lesser tech is a little more my style
Thanks for letting me hang out with this video of your MK8 while I wait for mine. It's gonna be a long one.
I still miss the VR6 option for the Golf R, they made a great sound. It's why I bought my EDM `94 Corrado.
The automatic seat reclinement has been a feature on Mercedes from the 90s and you can disable or enable it in 3 clicks on the wheel.
I wonder if its a golf R32 theyre talking about at the end? hmm
Surley, they are so godamn sexy
My money is on a MK5 R32 Turbo build incoming!
I really didn’t like the looks of the mk8 in the initial pictures but having seen one in person it looks really good. Particularly in black
Always top quality vids. Thanks for keeping it real!
Happy with my first six months which is currently at 7,000kms…fully run in now 😂😂
Hiding the middle light bar was a good choice, looks loads better
Does the problem exist across other trims? If so that's crazy to me the problem would be missed
This is one of the best put together videos I've seen in a long while from you guys. Nice work, well done.
I also have the MK8R in Sydney and can confirm I have not seen a single other one on the road!
Sure it has some teething issues but my word, what performance and what a car VW have built.
I've seen about 3 of them on the road. Very few and far between compared to the 7s
Owners probably have the in for warranty issues! I havent seen one in Canberra !!
I've seen 2 in Sydney, maybe you and Moog 😂
I’ve seen 3 - Definitely Moog, a black one in OP area and a Nardo Grey in Bondi
@@drucejnr Nardo Grey one would've been an R-Line, the R only comes in Blue, Black and White.
Argument at the end, best thing I've heard on UA-cam this week - so funny!!
Heya Moog, with the ECU's being recently unlocked, would you consider getting a custom tune? (prior to the big companies releasing their tuning packages)
Tune is available now in Europe, french tuner Shiftech did 503hp on E85, 3.4sec 0/100km/h, solid from a stock engine
Wait… if that’s not the best Golf then does that mean Marty has another Golf? 😂
He probably ended up getting the golf r wagon 😂 Marty’s got a thing for wagons! AHHAHA
I reckon he got a mk.5 gti
Best MK8 R review on the internet!
did you rick roll us?
Best Mk8 R video to date.
But JFYI, Hard press on the R button puts you in Race mode as we know, Light press each time cycles through all modes. Kind of !
Too many doors for me
yea cant beat an aggressive coupe
Still rocking my 84 mk1 golf...it is awd swapped and vr6t swapped but every golf ive ever owned ive loved especially my vw r32 that i still daily.
I’m watching before work sitting in my MK7 GTI. I’ve got my argon welding bottle in the back to go get refilled later. These really are great all around cars.
absolutely incredible b-roll of the golf dude, insane
That combo of a nasty rasp followed by a decent bov and rally-ish burbles is actually really nice.
At any trim level the Golf has bloody good handling. My Mark 7.5 Trendline has 3 “driving” modes (dsg, sport and tiptronic) and I’ve found the handling to be pretty good. My girl loves corners.
They all push understeer though if you try to have fun
Fantastic video!
I was very surprised to see a MK8 R in Tasmania the day after your first video on it, couldn't believe my eyes. Since then I've seen multiple different MK8 R's in Tassie surprisingly.
MCM = All the good stuff without the fluff!!
Last part of this video makes me laugh and happy. a fan from the philippines since 2013 🙏. hope to see you here
Love the Grumpy Ol Men bit at the end.
My father paid $5995 for a brand new top of the line GLI Jetta/Bora in 1992, $100k for a Golf is just absolutely absurd to me, even $65k is outrageous
Good to see the bois arguing, that normally gets very entertaining.
The brake booster melting issue is honestly huge. That should be immediate recall material with them taking the car to the dealer on a truck.
Spot On!, after 20 months with my Mk8R..i still can´t find any more fun, fast and practical on the market.. And soon with stage 1 tune and 400hp.. This will be the Best hothatch ever ( daily and some fun on track ).. ;)
HAHA I love your videos so much xD, always a segway to the next video Haha I love it!
That ending got me hyped for the next video. Levorg STI vs Golf R!
the ultimate station wagon golf? this is goin to get intresting
Great video.
That ending too…
You guy's should do up the upcoming mini Mitsubishi Delica.
The best 4wd channel on the planet 🌏
if marty bought mk5 r32 Im gonna cry .... last true vr6 3.2 is my dream car
Could be on the money,... Hoping for a VR6
It's a slick ass little car for sure. Love how clean you keep it. Love Marty giving you shit LOL.
