For me this game gives the closest feeling to what it like to really ride a motorbike at stupid speeds. Even though it's so old and we have games like ride 4, this is closest to the feeling when you have it going at top speed nailing the bends holding on for your life. It's a masterpiece

I remember playing Super Hang On all day one Saturday at my friend's house. We were upgrading the bike, I went home and had my lunch, I still remember what it was, toast and cheese sandwiches! When I came back they had upgraded the bike so much it was a beast. It was the fastest game if ever seen!
I feel like a poser since my first experience with Super Hang-On was in Yakuza Zero, and there was never an Arcade machine near me growing up, so I never experienced the joy of hanging on to the plastic motorcycle. That being said, I LOVE this game. The music, the gameplay, the graphics, everything about this game is just A+. With Sega announcing the revival of several old franchises, this is the one I want more than almost anything else, including Out Run and After Burner. After all, there's plenty of modern car and jet games for a new Out Run and After Burner to struggle to differentiate themselves against, but a motorcycle racing game would have a lot more breathing room.
Hang-On & Safari Hunt were built into my Master System (my first console from when I was maybe five). I remember it took me and my brother quite a while to figure out that there were gears on the bike. Our kid logic was that "up" would make us go faster, despite "down" being how you shifted to a higher gear.
This game has a special place in my life. My best friend got a import mega drive from Japan in early 89 and he got Rambo 3, Thunderforce 2 and a strange Japanese game with it. We were blown away by it. I saved all my pocket money and every penny i earned from my milk round and got my own mega drive late 89 and the only game I got with it was Super Hang On. I played this game to death and i still think the soundtrack is one of the best even today. Outride a crisis is still one of my favourite tunes of all time along with magical sound shower.
"Super Hang-On soundtrack is one of the greatest chiptune soundtracks of all time" -> I have been thinking the same for years. This game does not get all the love it deserves.
Hang On was one of those coin-ops that was in most arcades back the day, not quite as omnipresent as Outrun but still extremely common. Great video, really love this complete history series.
Cracking video, my man! I've been on a SHO high lately and this video was the perfect compliment to a game I've loved since I was 3 🙂. Only issue I have is that you CLEARLY didn't play the GG version of GP Rider, as it is virtually nothing like the SMS version and is significantly better in every facet (save for maybe sounds). Will watch the OutRun one next! 😁
I've been waiting for this one! Probably more so than outrun even, personally. Outride a crisis is one of my favourite chip tunes too. Keep up the good work
I love Super Hang On, I was always rubbish at it till the 3DS port. It let me tailor the settings to my skill level(crap). It taught me the game and I slowly got to increase my skill level and I made it harder and harder and now I am great at it. Great Stuff Mr Slopes.
Wow! I remember now playing this on holidays in the south of France. We were at a sort of camping place and every summer two carnival ask trucks came along. One was for a bumper car ride and the other was like a transformer like Optimus Prime and the trolly was opened up to two levels of arcade machines like Nam and Out Run and many other classics. also some infront of it and This was one of them. The simple Acrade Machine in the first Foto... but the guys hat the neat idea of placing a junk motorbike infront of it! The front part was missing and so you were sitting on this motorbike leaning over the tank to get to the controls. As a kid this was just way cool and a great idea. I never could remember the name of the game and guess was more into Out Run at the same time. This video fore sure brings back some great memories! Danke and Greetings from Germany!
My local caravan park in Eastney had the original Hang On ‘bike’ cab. At the time there was just nothing like it so I used to just sit on it whether I had cash for a credit or not lol
Awesome video! Love Super Hang-On, played it first on the Genesis and then I found the arcade machine on an old billard place and loved it even more. The music for the first game was indeed by Hiro, but Super Hang-On OST was composed by Katsuhiro Hayashi and Koichi Namiki.
Outrun....my ALL TIME favourite arcade game. I bought a £100 steering wheel just to get the most authentic experience to emulate it on my PC...just for that one game. If you get a chance you should do one of these on Microprose's Grand Prix Series by Geroff Crammond. The series is by far one of the best most influential racing sims in the world with incredible levels of detail from having over 150 different settings in the advanced car setup menu that actually affected car performance too an advanced physics model that became the standard for high end sim racing that is still used by IRacing today, the series is legendary among fans. I first got to play super hang in in fleetwood nr Blackpool, I loved it! These days I always get to play it at a retro game event and it still holds up very well, gotta say though I do love me a Ferrari 😉
The Saturn version was Impossible to play on the d-pad controller. The bike would just fly to the side and hit the walls (just like your footage). It really required the well accessory. The arcade game also loses most of its magic on an emulator because the bike was such a big part of the ezperience.

Thanks for this trip down memory lane. My first exposure to Hang On was in the arcades. I was barely 5yo so wasn't tall or heavy enough to control the life size motorcycle cabinet. I late got the game on the Sega Master System as a bundled item... wasn't a favourite of mine since it wasn't co-op play but there was only a few times where my bro and I could complete a full race and we savoured the victories. We later got Super Hang On when it also came bundled with our Mega Drive 2. I was definitely happy to get it due to the nostalgia from the SMS days. A game that's been on my Steam wishlist for a while has been Super Night Rider... a very Hang On type of game. I was also disappointed this didn't come on the Mega Drive mini. I was actually expecting more Sega original IP on it.
One of my favourite ever arcade gaming experiences was when I played Super Hang-On, the full bike cab, on a ferry from Dover to Calais for a school trip. I had already played it once at the Segaworld that was in Bournemouth but there was something a little extra about playing it on a swaying boat. Was a strange experience.
Super Hang On was my inspiration to get into motorcycle riding. Everytime when I get out on the road, I have the soundtrack playing in my helmet in one ear while I take on the twisties. :)
I worked for Sega and they were a good company to work for. Proper fun people always looking for new ways to have fun. The R360 was when sheit got too much where they would pay staff more to fling themselves around basically in a ball! I'd go home high at times after work! Loved working for Sega!
Really enjoyed this video. I have only ever played Hang On at the arcades, but even that was enough to endear it as one of my favourite racing series'.
@@slopesgameroom mine too, right up there with the Ferrari game and After Burner. Man, I so regret that decision now, would have been worth it just as an awesome keepsake.
Great video, and i can't wait for the Complete history of Out Run. In my eyes, the best ever 80's racing game witch took 10 years before a great arcade port came home (Japanese Sega Saturn version). Still play that game once in a while. Sure, i love the 3DS and Switch version as well (even with the different car), but the Saturn version played with the 3D analogue pad is the best arcade experience at home if you ask me ;-) Hope to see this in your video too!
Hang-On was also bundled with the first european versions of the Master System, as a Sega Card with no box. In retrospect it's really one of the best ports of those games on the Master System, the only one that didn't require choppy scaling animations. It's still very playable today. Many years ago in an arcade located in the UK (possibly St Ives, Cornwall) i got to play on the Super Hang-On bike! Leaning the left and right was not easy. I became a bigger fan of Sega's OutRun ^_^
My arcade memories of (Super?) Hang On was it always being a pair of 2 bikes together, never a solo bike, and a large stationary monitor. Or was that a different game?
I absolutely loved Super Hang On as a kid. I remember always waking up late at night and seeing my dad sat on my bedroom floor playing the original mode basically the career mode. I'd sit and pretend to be asleep and watch him for hours on it.
While it's not the absolute greatest, I thought the Amiga port of Super Hang-On was technically well done, at least compared to some of the other crap arcade ports, but I do have one big complaint about it; All the other riders on the track are ALWAYS trying to crash into you. Seriously, play it, or watch any video of the game and the other riders are always leaning in your direction and coming across the track toward you. You can be on the outside of a curve and one of the other bikes with shoot across the track, hit you and then immediately zip back to the other side. Not only that, but often after you pass another bike, you can see them start going back the other way as if to say "Well, I guess there's no reason for me to keep going to that side now that there's no chance of hitting the player..." It's infuriating!
yeah I remember super hang-on... played it alot in the arcades along with double dragon, operation wolf, art of fighting and mortal kombat good ol dayz =)
Wonderful video. Had to get my 3DS out to play Hang On again. Wish Hang on could get the Outrun 2 treatment but hey some indie likes out there too at least. Outrun complete history, please don't forget Outrun 2019, just a mention, ugly duckling ( technically not an outrun game) but a favorite.
Amazing, just found your channel via searching for the Super Hang On Vinyl, this has made me try and find a copy to play on my PS3. I love the music from this game.
This was pre-installed on our SEGA Master System Plus, it's very nostalgic for my brothers and I.
High level arcade Super Hang-On play is really brilliant. Outrun is pretty but I think SHO is the superior game.
Any Dreamcast games in the pipeline? More Sega! Good video...as always.
The thing that made it Super for me was the new Turbo button :)
Oh yes new episode. I love this series
Cheers buddy :D
My arcade memories of (Super?) Hang On was it always being a pair of 2 bikes together, never a solo bike, and a large stationary monitor. Or was that a different game?
I love this game so much, thank you.
Please, do a complete history of Super Monaco GP
Cheers from Portugal and please, stay safe at home
I'm sure I will get to that eventually :D
Had this as a 6 in 1 cart on my mega drive, love the music on it
could you say that Yu Suzuki is to Sega what Miyamato is to Nintendo?
Perhaps, but then again, Naoto Oshima created the company's mascot and Yuji Naka its flagship franchise.
Thank you for your hard work love your videos keep up the good work.
Wait, a thought just occured to me, if they didn't go with dirtbikes because dirtbikes weren't popular, was Excitebike not a thing at the time?
There are two eras of SGR videos, pre and post "on camera". Look into "head room" my man, rule of 3rds, all that good stuff.
I absolutely loved Super Hang On as a kid. I remember always waking up late at night and seeing my dad sat on my bedroom floor playing the original mode basically the career mode. I'd sit and pretend to be asleep and watch him for hours on it.
Ahhhhhh that's such an awesome memory :)
Love the S.S.T. Band
Sooooooo good
@@slopesgameroom As good as Zuntata though?
While it's not the absolute greatest, I thought the Amiga port of Super Hang-On was technically well done, at least compared to some of the other crap arcade ports, but I do have one big complaint about it; All the other riders on the track are ALWAYS trying to crash into you. Seriously, play it, or watch any video of the game and the other riders are always leaning in your direction and coming across the track toward you. You can be on the outside of a curve and one of the other bikes with shoot across the track, hit you and then immediately zip back to the other side. Not only that, but often after you pass another bike, you can see them start going back the other way as if to say "Well, I guess there's no reason for me to keep going to that side now that there's no chance of hitting the player..."
It's infuriating!
YES! THE NEXT COMPLETE HISTORY IS ONE OF MY FAVORITE SERIES EVER.
It's well underway... biiiiiig video incoming
yeah I remember super hang-on... played it alot in the arcades along with double dragon, operation wolf, art of fighting and mortal kombat
good ol dayz =)
Wonderful video.
Had to get my 3DS out to play Hang On again.
Wish Hang on could get the Outrun 2 treatment but hey some indie likes out there too at least.
Outrun complete history, please don't forget Outrun 2019, just a mention, ugly duckling ( technically not an outrun game) but a favorite.
Thanks for the video game history lesson on a classic.
Ken Sugimori has such a distinct style 23:15
12:00 I can't seem to find the original game's soundtrack on UA-cam, just the main theme...
racing hero didn't get mentioned... >=O
or cool riders, or manx tt super bike. =P
Amazing, just found your channel via searching for the Super Hang On Vinyl, this has made me try and find a copy to play on my PS3. I have found an Ultimate Collection but this does not have Super Hang On, on!!! Any ideas?
By the way, I have started to make my way through your Complete History AMAZING !!!
0:27 you used an old version of mame, now hair and cloth are well emulated.
