After Burner was released in the summer of 1987 that's 34 years ago. I was in my local arcade in 1987, they had this reveal party of the Arcade Cabinet. I remember them playing the Top Gun soundtrack (Danger Zone, Mighty Wings) on huge speakers. The reveal was a big deal to me. At that time I was an arcade freak and Sega was my favorite company. Space Harrier and Out Run (both full cabinet versions) were the games that I played most.
I remember playing the G-LOC 360 cabinet. A lot of fun, but it was also super expensive. Something like $2 (or more); a LOT of money for a game back then. When you're a 90s kid with only $10-$20 in your pocket at a pizza parlor or Las Vegas kids area arcade (because the folks just want you out of their hair), that's a huge ask. Especially when the game only lasted, like, 1-2mins, and it took as long to load into the seat. To be failr, though, for the first play or two I was just doing barrel rolls, enjoying the inversion, and not focusing of staying alive in the game. lol
I imagined Climax was delisted due to license expirations for the aircraft from the manufacturers. However the game’s release on mobile makes me wonder. A physical re-release would be awesome. I wonder if DJS will look into Namco’s Air Combat arcade releases, which gave rise to the Ace Combat series.
My brother and I played the 360 degree G-LOC system in Las Vegas back in the late 90s. We absolutely loved it, while our parents stood there wondering how we weren't getting motion sick.
I played the R360 version of G-Loc when sega had their own arcade in the basement of hamleys during the mid 90's... it was phenomenal... especially in pro mode which made the cabinet movement extremely violent
As a big fan of both this series & Ace Combat, I missed playing these in the arcades. Still remember my time with the G-Loc full-motion cabinet like it was yesterday.
Wow, I not only had no idea that G-Loc shared DNA with After Burner, but that After Burner III was actually Strike Fighter! I swear, in the 90s, so many series were trying to compete with Wonder Boy for confusing video game naming schemes. Great work as always, Slopes!
Was going to go to but another watch of this is a must! I’ll reiterate, my fave is probably the first or second, GLOC in the R360 was fantastic and Black Falcon was bloody good really. Keep up the good work DJ and stay safe fella!
Sega Strike Fighter is one of the best! Also I remember seeing the simulator of Climax at Gameworks, I pumped alot of quarters that day! I bought it on XBLA when it dropped.
I actually had a shot on a 360 in the middle east around about 97 and it was some experience. The madness of being spun about and the dizziness after was something haha
Loved this video Dan! 10/10 and such a great gaming series! I remember first playing Afterburner 2 in the arcade as a kid, for what felt like a lifetime I was a fighter pilot saving the world Can’t wait for the next video See you next game
I love these in-depth looks at the icons of gaming history - many thanks for covering this : I still have (don't ask me why)a copy of the soundtrack that came with an issue of a UK mag 😎
Top-notch video as always! I definitely agree with you that the aptly-named "After Burner: Climax" title is the best in the series. Please cover the complete history of the amazing "GALAXY FORCE" series. I don't know why that franchise is now so obscure and forgotten. It's such a shame, really. I own the SMS port of the original, the Genesis port of the sequel, and the absolute best version of that sequel's original arcade game on the Nintendo 3DS.
Brilliant video. thankyou. Loved After Burner. Remember seeing an R-360 in the Central Pier in Blackpool but not playing it. Got to play the R-360 in France in a booze cruie in 2004. Epic, nearly threw up lol.
Yu Suzuki hid little cameos of his other games in After Burner II. At 13:50 you can just barely see in the bottom right corner the motorcycle from Hang On turning along side the runway. The red Ferrari from Outrun is also present when you land at the end of stage 13
Awesome Video as usual! Never knew about that 360 arcade machine. Bet that'd either be super fun, or make you super sick lol. I'd love to see a complete history of something like Galaga or Raiden. And if you ever decided to do any RPGs, I'd recommend something like Legend of Dragoon or the two Legend of Legaia games. Something small, as I know you still get people asking for fallout, final fantasy, etc. They seem to forget just how massive those series really are, and how much info you'd have to include. Keep on rockin' DJSlopes!
And you notice in Terminator 2, John Connor was playing After burner 2 arcade machine similar to the one in this video while being hunted down by T-1000 cop in the arcade malls!
I had an adrenaline shot. I played the standup cabinet when I was 10. The forcefeedback stick was pretty hard to move. It took me a few coins on learning how to dodge enemy missiles... imho pc-engine port is a nice one.
I had After Burner on my SMS. I managed to find a spot on the screen where no enemy projectiles could hit me... Until somewhere between stages 8 to 12.
They used to have the R360 at the Trocadero, don't know if there's one still there... both mind and stomach-bending! EDIT: Galaxy Force, Rad Mobile, A.B. Cop, or even the non-Sega ones?
Excellent video as always Dan, your production skills are second to none and I always enjoy the detail you go into. Also, is that some footage from one of my Afterburner Climax videos I spy at the end...?
Errrrrr maybe, I thought I removed all place holder footage. I'm going to say "yes" and add you to the description in the morning regardless as I defo looked at your vids during production of this one :D
It would be awesome if they re-released After Burner: Climax on modern systems like the Switch, since the 360 and PS3 games are now delisted. But it's still good to be able to play the best home version of G-LOC on the Switch at the very least.
I really gotta get Sega Ages G-LOC: Air Battle. I completely missed out on After Burner: Climax. Hated After Burner 3. But I love After Burner 1 and 2.
Huh?! No mention of Bayonetta's After Burner-Homage stage in the first game? Sure, it's not directly-related to After Burner, but if you bothered to go into the likes of G-LOC & SEFA Strike Force, I'd argue it deserves at least an honorable mention as part of an After Burner "complete history".

Fact: bayonetta soundtrack after burner
You should do *Wonder Boy* next
Please make video about Syphon filter & medal of honor & ace combat & shin megami tensi please love your videos keep up the good work.
I CANT BELIEVE Out Run Coast 2 Coast isn't on Switch. As well as Daytona.
Geez, even almost 30 years later I still get goosebumps and a bit of a rush when I hear the Top Gun Anthem played. XD

rw:its so nostalgic.
@@mitrooper yes indeed..space harrier for sure..
Whenever I play Afterburner Climax, I always choose the original soundtrack, Hiroshi Kawaguchi really nailed that one.
I just wish that it had the Melody

I love the arcade. I love the arcade enough to work at an arcade with vintage games from the 1980's and 1990's.
I remember the local news, in Canada, talking about the local arcade as a den of sin. Where children would start doing smack from just walking in.
Wow haha
Yea it was great. Heroin, alcohol and arcades - winners do use drugs!
Good grief, we exported our nonsense even back then
@@floydjohnson7888 America isnt the only place with puritans.
Wow
Loved this game in the arcade ❤️ my childhood for sure 💯
I always loved this game but never really understood how to play. You can't really see what your supposedly supposed to dodge
It's a huge missed opportunity not to rerelease these games on current gen systems because of the new Top Gun coming out.

Dude, super scaler games were mind blowing in the 80s. Nintendo had mode 7 and Sega had scaler.
1986, what a great year.
It was the year I was born!
Great video. That 360 cockpit looks rad as hell!
It was a great year!
Especially if you didn't work in or live near a poorly built soviet reactor. :P
I simply love After Burner Climax, that game just did it right. I can see myself playing it for may years to come. Awesome video.
How can I play this game on a console these days..??? I cant find if anywhere :(
I have Afterburner II on the Saturn. Great fun. Remember John Connor playing Afterburner in Terminator 2?

I kind of wonder if there is any lost concept art out there of that Castle In The Sky approach that Yu Suzuki wanted to go for.
After Burner on the 4th of July!? Lets Go!

The scene where Afterburner appears in the film Suburban Commando is so ridiculous I can’t help but love it.
Slope: here are some tips to get notifications because UA-cam sucks at it.
Me: I just check YT twice a day.
love the super scaler games, and love these videos. Excellent work!
I put so much money in this game in the arcade on holiday as a kid, good times 👍
Slope, the Jeremy Clarkson of the retrogaming world. 🙌
I said that too. I just discovered him today and I think he's what you get when you combine Nostalgia Nerd with Clarkson
Brilliant video. Would love to see Power Drift next.
DJ Slopes again making Sundays better 🥰
That sit in After Burner was the absolute best. I never got to sit in that G Lock 360 cab tho.
I remember playing this a a kid. My dad giving me a few Coins and watching me play. Still remember get Ready and Fire Fire Fire. Miss ya Pops :)

16:42 The best part is playing it drunk but not wasted. What an experience! I beat the arcade record that day! lol
After Burner III has the best opening sequence of the whole series, that opening narration and sound system destroying jet ignition is killer!
When I was a kid and went to the arcade this was the game I put quarters in first. And man it ate alot of quarters.
Afterburner, Outrun, and Roadblasters were my favorites.
The smell of lavender, used gum, and popcorn. The best sensation at an arcade. :3

Saw Top Gun in 70mm print at a major screen, it was mind blowing!

To be fair I was shocked that it was this many

I remember Black Falcon. I had it for my PSP. Loved it, Shimsei,
The guy in that R-360 G-LOC cabinet modelled this 😂 emoji
Bloody awesome video! I’m happy I am got this on psn back in the day.
Aaaah! I totally forgot used to have that plastic, stand-up After Burner game/toy at 15:11! XD
"Here's a system that rotates 360 degrees! You can do amazing things with this!"

Because it would have been too rough to play Mortal Kombat on?

Great episode. I'd love to see a complete history video on the Shining Force series.
I like the part where the planes goes WHOOSH!
I remember being on a holiday with an r 360 cabinet. And not really plying the game, just swinging myself around in it
