I've always held firm to the idea that _'Altered Beast'_ and _'Golden Axe'_ share the same universe. since the _"Cockatrice"_ is used in both games. As a mount in _'Golden Axe'_ and an enemy in _'Altered Beast'._
Yes. ''Golden Axe'' is before ''Altered Beast'' in this chronology. In concept, many Sega games share the same universe: ''Golden Axe''; ''Altered Beast''; ''Shinobi''; ''Phantasy Star''; ''Aliens Storm''; ''Echo - the Dolphin''; ''Shining in the Darkness''. The hidden enemy in this universe is the Dark Force\Darkness\Shadow force, sealed in the star of ''Alghoul''. But, in solar system of Alghoul and the our solar system, this evil force send influences and many creatures to broke this seal. etc.
This game was the first old school arcade game i ever beat...and i did it with my girlfriend as player 2...so it will always have a special place in my heart
I never once owned a Sega Genesis but I always loved this game growing up. I could barely make it to the third level back when it was in arcades (yeah I'm old).
It’s funny how the Greek mythologicy story of “The Rape of Persephone” was lost in translation. What was initially a story of how Hades, lord of the Underworld, stole away Persephone (daughter of Ceres - the goddess of agriculture and plants), turned into Zeus reviving a nameless fallen hero to venture into the Underworld and rescue Athena from someone named “Neff.” Still, one of my favourites from the 1980s arcades.
In the original, this fallen hero is based in a legend: The greek boxer (from same land of Licaon King) transformed in a werewolf (during 7 years) by Zeus because a pact. In japanese version, this Nameless Hero have a codiname: ''Juuoki'' - something like ''Beast king'' or ''King of Beasts''. Changed to ''Altered Beast'' in american market: censured. Your theriantropy power is based in the latin and greek legends and folklore: Europe and South America's ''werewolves'' can transform in anothers animal\humans hybrids too, like horses, hounds, goats, pigs, wolves, jaguars, monkeys, etc. Sorry my poor english: I'am brazilian. ;)
Altered Beast is one of my favorite classics but mostly due to the nostalgia. There was this small arcade near my school called 'The Jungle' (I think it was based off of the Guns'n'Roses song that I think came out that year) that just opened up and they had Altered Beast among others. Me and my friends Mike, Shawn, Devon and David played the living hell out of that game. I want to say this was around the time Street Fighter 2 was released but maybe that came a year or so later. I ended up getting a Sega Genesis and everyone was staying the night at my house to to play AB among other games. Eventually I ended up adding more games to my collection and me and my friends just went nuts over them. Revenge Of Shinobi, Phantasy Star 2, Strider, Truxton, Golden Axe, Ghouls 'n' Ghosts, Super Hang-On... and I had more but I can't remember. I ended up working as a delivery boy for our local meat market riding my bike to drop off orders for the elderly on my bicycle. Got paid $3.50 an hour which wasn't bad for a 12 year old back in the late 80's. Most of it went to Sega games and stuff for my Commodore 64. But I always saved some for the local skating rink which was a big deal in my area back then.
Mediocre, the only two things i hated about altered beast on genesis was is 1 ,only 3 hits 1 live and no contineus and 2, everytime you grab a power up the music will starts from the beginning all over again, that’s it.
@Darth Wheezius It's telling that, besides the Sonic series, the best Genesis games were cross-ported to the SNES, and they often looked, sounded and ran better on the competition's hardware. Hell, even the 16 bit Sonic games were kinda ehh for the most part, though that was mostly due to them making a character whose central mechanic is speed then designing the levels to stop him every couple of screens.
Instead of having pressure sensitive buttons, why didn't he just make it where you did a strong attack by holding down a direction while attacking? Or pressing 2 buttons at once? There are so many ways to add extra moves to simple controls, IDK why he thought it would be a good idea for games back then.
Mate, a "Hack & Slash" or even a "Warrior" _Altered Beast_ game could be amazing if given to the right people and with the proper development time. Just because the PS2 version suck doesn't mean that the concept itself should die in a fire. It failed in its execution not its concept, IMHO. Just saying.
You should make a sample in the Neff boss altered beast voice that states "Welcome to slopes game room!" Instead of "Welcome to your doom"..... Yea cheesy I know.... but just a cheap thrill idea.
@Darth Wheezius public education system in our town was way above the national average actually and several years ahead of most other schools curriculum i.e. being taught material several grades earlier than the rest of the country.
I used to love playing this at the arcade. I loved it even more when I realized that it used the howl from "American Werewolf in London" when you changed into the wolf lol
Still to this day, decades after playing it for the first time, I can still hear "power up" and "rise from your grave" as clear as day! It's definitely been imprinted in my mind for the rest of time! That game wasn't the greatest my any means but it definitely left it's mark and is just simply unforgettable. The storyline and style was just so unique and unlike anything else at the time, like something a kid would come up with if asked for ideas for a game and I mean that in the best possible way. A huge muscle bound hero that can transform into a bigger, stronger animal form to beat up evil monsters, who wouldn't want to play that...?
Hahahah..same here..i so agree with you! I randomly say "power up" in that voice when my sister is around...and we both just laugh. We went so many rounds on that game...
"Wise fum yo gwave" I played this on mobile and it seemed like a good game if not for the terrible controls. I don't get why people like emulating old games on touch screens - everything's so imprecise and finicky. But the game itself was stupid fun.
Altered Beast is one of my favourite games ever! The transformations were the coolest thing I've ever seen as a kid. It was and still is a pretty hard game as well. Not to mention that catch phrase "Welcome to your doom!" Stuck with me all the way into my adulthood. A true classic under dog I say. :)
Didn’t get to play this until like 2007 as I never knew about it until it was ok Xbox live arcade but still loved it then! Had no idea it has 2 sequels tho
Thanks for covering this Dan! Out of all the Genesis titles my little brother had I probably played this the most by far, I can't begin to imagine how many times I beat it over the years . While the SNES will always be the greatest system I'm glad my brother had his Genesis so we could compare the 2
When I was a kid back in the early 90s there was a kid I knew who had an Altered Beast cabinet at home. That was the first game I ever beat too. Glad to see this trip down memory lane.
Sparked so many memories of my childhood... I never could be pulled away from this game. I even played it (with tears in my eyes) on the end of a table full of all my old toys and other items (crap) at a carboot sale. I was finally selling my Megadrive and a modest collection of games. Modest due to me and my friends using games as gambling chips while playing games or as curency in real life 🤣 I sobbed when I had to pack it up and hand my soul over to some guy for a fraction of what it was worth to me. I even tried to hide altered beast as it was my favourite. It was an awesome game, as soon as I pressed play on the video I got a shiver down my spine and hairs were on end. Thanks Slope.... I feel like a kid again!!!!!!
Others may have mentioned it before, but Sega didn't publish Altered Beast on the Famicom. It was licensed to Asmik, and developed by Interlink, who made it into a "remixed" version of the game we know and love. It had three extra forms (Phoenix, Shark, Lion) and three extra stages.
I remember playing the original arcade game in my local bowling alley, and it always sat as one of my all time favorite Genesis games. Just childhood memories and nostalgia I guess.
I remember my older friend showing me pictures of the guy turning into the beast. Those graphics! It was superbly done then. Crazy! I did enough playing this game with GameGenie.
I knew Larry had lost a bunch of weight but I'm starting to think we may need to test him for PEDs before he's allowed to compete at the UA-cam retrogaming Olympics. Great video, as always. Love the attention to detail in your editing. The person that helped you out with editing this one did a good job of doing so in your style.
i won't forget this game because oridinary patrick turning into a killing wolf is as unique as roash, when punching driver while running from the police. theses kinda unique and fun concept never got the attention they deserved from their boss (despite the ducati being still in EA's lobby).
I played this game on the Sega Genesis. I got it as the cartridge included in the bundle and boy do I have fond and sweet memories of playing the crap out of this game.
nailed it again Dan. Love your retrospectives. Especially those C64 memories... fish and chips or sausage supper while playing Streets of Rage 2. An amstrad though??? Oooh weren't we fancy! Keep up the great work mate!
There was an Altered Beast cabinet in my local leisure centre (Barnstaple in North Devon) at the start of the 90's, me and my friend would go swimming then play it until we ran out of 10p coins! I don't even remember what other coin-ops were in this small arcade because Altered Beast was all we wanted to play. Ahhh memories!
I remember discovering the Altered Beast arcade game back when my mom and some friends went to Nickel City. And if any of you guys remember Nickel City, then your childhood was awesome. Anyway, out of all the games in Nickel City that caught my eye, besides Kingdom of Dragons, Altered Beast was the one that really got my curiosity. That game was just sitting there, practically yelling my name. I put a couple nickels in that beast, and had a blast. What really sold me was, of course, the theme and transformations. I never got to finish it because I ran out of nickels and we were about to leave. The next time I went there with a friend, I played Altered Beast again, but for a little longer this time. Sadly, like before, I didn’t get to finish the game. Then the next time I got there, sadly, the cabinet was no longer there. Though they still had Kingdom of Dragons. Which was the game I played the most there. All I had to play was the Genesis port, which wasn’t bad, but I missed the bright colors, the smooth graph and animation, the better music, the unlimited continues, and of course, that epic as Hell ending. But now that I have Xbox Live and my Xbox One, I can play the arcade once again, and feel like a kid at Nickel City, again. Ahhhh memories...😌
Altered Beast might be mediocre, but it is the first and most important video game I have ever played. The first time i really felt i was on a journey. I won't lie, I have seen those end credits more then anything game or piece of media ever and still play it to this day. I have a wicked soft spot for this one
My first console was an Atari 2600 and then I got an NES. Playing Altered Beast on my older cousin's Genesis was a mind blowing next gen expierance, and the first time I felt that I was playing a mature game, something intended for older gamers, not kids.
I didn't mind the PS2 Altered Beast. Not gonna defend it as a great game or anything, but I got it cheap and it turned out to have more depth than it's given credit for. It's a 3D open world metroidvania type game, with the beast powers giving access to new areas of the map.
I play lots of classic Sega and Nintendo games as of late and also arcade classics. Altered Beast is a nice game. A little on the short side but never boring. It easily invites me to play on harder difficulty, something rather rare with modern games.
WISE FWOM YOUR GWAVE! I remember the one thing I actually enjoyed about the PS2 game was the transformation sequences. They genuinely made them look horrifying in the best possible way. The game itself wasn't great, but those have stuck with me for nearly 15 years now. Also I was wondering if you were gonna acknowledge their recent addition in Sega Heroes, and you did, so Yay! Great work, dude!
Thanks for being down to earth and not hanging out with aliens you make more sense than anybody else when it comes down to this game raid I still don't want to play it but you make more sense than everybody else
This game made headlines because it showcased the Genesis' ability to reproduce an arcade game on a home system. If you go back through the media hype and magazine stories, that's the one common factor you'll see and the one all the kids (self include) kept talking about!
US gamer here. I remember reading about the PS2 Altered Beast in Magazines, and thought it was pretty cool for them to be making another Altered Beast game. It's release was never announced eventually fading into obscurity. I never tried it until I modded my PS2. It supports 60 as well as 50 thought it is 50 by default. I found the game to be rather subpar past the transformation scenes. Those look pretty good every time. What hurt the game the most, for me, was the lack of a lock on feature. If it had one like Devil May Cry, I would have probably played the game through. I had enough with the water stage. Your mobility vs the enemies felt too limited, and the underwater parts just made things slower.
The only arcade game I learned how to beat on one quarter. I got it on my Xbox One; however, whatever enabled me to do well in the arcade is lost today. I do not know if it is the fact it is not the arcade version in emulation or my age. Altered Beast and Golden Axe are in the same universe. I hope that, that fact is someday utilized to great effect in video games and maybe even for movies or a series.
The first time I ever played "Altered Beast" was actually just a few months ago with "Sega Classics Collection" on my brother's Switch. I didn't enjoy it very much until I looked up the instruction manual online to find out how the game's weird mechanics work, and even then it's only a decent game at best. It's an important title for Sega's history, though.
This was one of the first arcade games which I saw in my otherwise far far away from civilization village... I still remember all the games that were on arcade machines back then... I couldnt play it because of the difficulty playing it as a Kid but I loved the idea and theme so much it was stuck in my mind ever since... Hopefully SEGA or whoever holds the IP can do a new game in the series....
I remember back in 1992 being 12 years old and walking into a mall arcade (for those reading who are too young to know what an arcade is, just watch Wreck it Ralph) where I found this gem known as Altered Beast. I spent a ton of quarters on the damn thing and never beat it until it was released for the Sega Genesis.
I got my copy of Altered Beast on Christmas Eve of 1989 with my Sega Genesis. While I loved it and the graphics blew my mind, I also received Space Harrier 2 and Ghouls n' Ghosts. I played Ghouls n' Ghosts like there woukd be no tomorrow.
I still remember this and golden axe arriving together in the arcade I used to frequent as a kid. There was nothing else that looked anywhere near as good in there. I was completely blown away until robocop and midnight resistance showed up
The only things that I hate or don't like about the "Altered Beast" game are that the camera was more in control linearly with the players' perspectives and movements than the players themselves and that the two-headed wolves in brown colour, even after being killed, didn't have or show any bonus life points to heal players' HPs.
First game I bought for my master system when I bought the console at dunton boot sale many years ago. And now a 153 master system games later I still make time to play this :)
This is probably common knowledge by this point, but the original Street Fighter game had pressure sensitive pads back in 1987, a year before Altered Beast. Capcom eventually re-designed the game by replacing the sensitive pads with sets of punch and kick buttons mapped to each of the 3 attack strengths after realizing how quickly the pads wore out from excessive public use as well as the obvious sore knuckles that would result from extended play sessions. Remnants of this idea can still be seen in one of the game’s bonus stages where Ryu must karate chop through a stack of stone tablets to score extra points, with the strength of the chop originally being determined by how hard the pad was hit. This didn’t translate well to using regular buttons, and IIRC you can easily get a perfect score just by hitting the heavy attack when the strength meter is at maximum power. In other words, they may as well just give you the extra points for free........
For those of us across the pond, I never had an amiga (not until recently and i love it) I had the Genesis Copy as my exposure to the game and for better or worse, it's nto a great game, but it's a great afternoon time killer when I'm bored out of my skull.
This game blew my mind the Christmas of 89. My brother got a Genesis and I painfully had to watch him play for hours before I could touch. I got my revenge years later when I got SNES for Christmas and I forced him to watch me play Contra 3 lolz

If you're going to use the Greek names for everyone else, then call her Demeter, not Ceres.
Compucles Yeah; the Romans also carried over this myth so it’s an easy mistake to interchange the names.
I like your, comment. I love how much of are world is derived from the ideas of mythology. Nice work on making this jump

Ahhhh memories...😌
i spent my childhood hoping for a sequel of this game: during summer i always played the coin op at the restaurant on the beach
13:06 Interesting choice of album to show off! Love Destruction's old stuff.
I didn't mind the PS2 Altered Beast. Not gonna defend it as a great game or anything, but I got it cheap and it turned out to have more depth than it's given credit for. It's a 3D open world metroidvania type game, with the beast powers giving access to new areas of the map.
@11:29 Great transition! Almost thought my life was falling down a dark path. Maybe I should play the PlayStation 2 games from Phoenix...😯
Excellent video as ever. Always worth waiting for. Great work!
The music and sound effects from this game hit me HARD with the nostalgia stick...
I played Altered Beast in the arcades and on the Amiga 500, love this game I still play this on MAME ;)
First game I ever played for the Genesis when I was 6 years old
Kim justice does an amazing take on the series as well
Kim justice has one of the best channels on the youtubes!
A few weeks ago I spend an entire weekend watching Kim Justice videos, that's such a good channel!
Yikes, someone is edgy.
@Dissident Bones my point of view is you can like someones art but not the person.
13:20 did she just say N-Bit system?
@15:18 I suddenly notice the The Scream painting reference in the game in the pile of skeletons
Not a game I would play over Golden Axe or Alien Storm but it's not bad to boot up every once in a while.
6:45 I was not expecting that.
A really good game. It has a big following, a couple of years ago I was at Dragon Con and a guy dressed as a Zesu saying rise from your grave.
Great video, man! I subbed!
What blew my mind is that in the end it was all just a movie and didn’t really happen
I think that is the collest thing. You won't take yourself too serious and go to become good at this game for sheer fun and nothing else.
My favorite Matthew Sweet album!!!
The metal band Megadriver did a cover of the level 1theme of Altered Beast. They did a pretty good job on it.
They defo did. Listened many times great band
Can someone ID the track starting at 4:02? It shouds awfully furmiliar, but I just can't remember from where.
Another great video! Keep it up!!!
I have this game on my Sega genesis back in the day goodtimes
"I think we're getting a little bit ahead of ourselves, guys... let's go back to the beginning." I need this on a tee-shirt. XD
I got my copy of Altered Beast on Christmas Eve of 1989 with my Sega Genesis. While I loved it and the graphics blew my mind, I also received Space Harrier 2 and Ghouls n' Ghosts. I played Ghouls n' Ghosts like there woukd be no tomorrow.
at 3:26 the sliding commercial.... is that Jim Sterlin?! oO
The Sega Master System version of this game is the first game I ever beat. Playing it now I have no idea how I had the patience for it.
First game I bought for my master system when I bought the console at dunton boot sale many years ago. And now a 153 master system games later I still make time to play this :)
Always had a soft spot for this game. The PS2 revamp also.
Big horror fan, especially werewolves. So it's theme is right up my alley.
My bf was a Sega Boi - he played this a LOT.
I was raised Nintendo ^^
Still sending love tho ✌🏼
Love this. My introduction to the Mega Drive. I also recall it being filed so it would fit Japenese cartridges.
Altered Beast was the first arcade game I beat as a kid
I would like to see a movie or Netflix series of this game! Lots of potential to be great if done right!!!
