So you know, GoldenEye 64 DID have dual analog controls. If you plug in 2 controllers and select the 2.1 control scheme (I think that's the one) it is a dual stick control scheme for the game using two controllers and two sticks.

Rare really was ahead of their time with the situational reaction animations. Even many games TODAY don't use that technique very often, just letting the enemies be bullet sponges until they suddenly rag doll when their HP hits zero.

DavCube So true. The feeling of your bullets hitting the enemy is remarkable and, for me at least, has not been replicated in ANY FPS since Perfect Dark. As great as Timesplitters was, I felt even that had something missing from the impact magic Goldeneye 007 and Perfect Dark had.

License To Kill was one of the most criminally underrated of the franchise but thankfully in recent years the movie is finally being appreciated. License To Kill is my second favourite in the franchise, after Casino Royale. The Living Daylights and Goldeneye are tied for my third, still can’t decide which I refer. Followed by The Spy Who Loved Me and From Russia With Love (still rate From Russia With Love over Goldfinger)

I’m glad you gave the Wii version a fair shake - I know a lot of people hate it because it was too COD or they don’t like Craig (or prefer Brosnan) but it holds a place in my heart as my entry way into my favourite film franchise. Yep, before I played GoldenEye 2010 I had never seen any of the films and had no intention of doing so - but now I’ve watched them all more times then I can remember, and read all the original Ian Fleming books, and some of the non-Fleming books, and read the comics and played the rest of the games etc.
That being said, I haven’t played it in many years - in fact, having watched the film and played the N64 original, I fear it just won’t be as fun as I found it nine years ago.
But I’m glad I played it. Oh boy, am I glad I played it.
0:42 Also Dalton was the fourth Bond - Brosnan was the fifth. Also, you forgot the original GoldenEye: Ian Fleming’s house in Jamaica.

Got to disagree with you about the controls on Goldeneye I always found them pretty intuitive but then I'm also a massive fan of the N64 controller, I know it's a weird looking thing and the analog stick has a tendency to break after a while but after the PlayStation controller it's easily in second place for me.

Fantastically put together video as always, and nice Robocop tune in the background to boot at the start. However, not to be that guy, but Dalton was fourth Bond, not fifth, unless you count the "non-canonical" 1960s Casino Royal comedy film or that black and white Bond TV outing.

Xbox one controller support? It's currently the best way to get that authentic HD fix.

Great video! Got me right in the nostalgia feels as I played this game with my friends into the wee hours of the morning many nights in the early two thousand aughts.
One thing I am scratching my head over is with all the mentions of the less than stellar EA games that came after, you made no mention of A Perfect Dark.
Also made by Rare, this game was built on the same engine as GoldenEye and you could even unlock GoldenEye levels to play during multiplayer. This was another one my friends and I started playing once tapped out on consecutive weeks of late night GoldenEye sessions.
Despite this, I really enjoyed the video. Thanks and keep 'em coming!

Goldeneye remains one of my favourite games of all time. I got fed up with the fact that it doesn't play well on any emulator I've ever used, so I bought a N64 and an original cartridge to get the best experience I could. The inverted trident controller is surprisingly comfortable, even today, and the game plays brilliantly. I still love it, and I still play it regularly.

Correction. License To Kills lower than expected box office performance domestically (USA not worldwide) was not responsible for the hiatus. It was in fact a convoluted series of legal matters. Bond 1991 (Probably to be tilted Property Of A Lady) was already in pre production when these legal matters hit. It's highly convoluted, so I'll simply quote the wikipedia for clarification.
"Dalton declared in a 2010 interview that the script was ready and "we were talking directors" before the project entered development hell caused by legal problems between Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, parent company of the series' distributor United Artists, and Broccoli's Danjaq, owners of the Bond film rights.[12] In 1990, MGM/UA was to be sold for $1.5 billion to Qintex, an Australian-American financial services company that had begun making television broadcast and entertainment purchases. When Qintex couldn't provide a $50 million letter of credit, the deal fell apart. A French company called Pathé Entertainment (unrelated to the French studio Pathé) quickly moved in to buy MGM/UA for $1.2 billion and merged the companies to create MGM-Pathé Communications. Pathé CEO Giancarlo Parretti intended to sell off the distribution rights of the studio's catalogue so he could collect advance payments to finance the buyout. This included international broadcasting rights to the 007 library at cut-rate prices, leading Danjaq to sue,[13] alleging the licensing violated the Bond distribution agreements the company made with United Artists in 1962, while denying Danjaq a share of the profits.[14] Countersuits were filed. When asked what he would do following resolution of the lawsuits, Dalton told Broccoli that it was unlikely that he would continue in the role.[15]
Paretti's behavior led to the bankruptcy of MGM-Pathé and additional lawsuits eventually resulted in a foreclosure by financial backer Crédit Lyonnais in 1992. The Bond rights lawsuits were settled in December 1992, and the renamed Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, now run by a Crédit Lyonnais subsidiary, began to explore further development of Bond 17 with Danjaq in 1993. Dalton was still Broccoli's choice to play Bond, but the star's original seven-year contract with Danjaq expired in 1993. Dalton has stated that the delay of his third film effectively ended the contract in 1990."
I really get frustrated by people continuing to perpetuate the false franchise history that License To Kill was directly responsible for the hiatus. It puts people off watching the film, dismissing it out of hand. And, in turn,
prejudicing Daltons tenure as Bond, the people who made it.
So if you could find a way to correct this, it would be grately appreciated. Cheers.

Great video on a very beloved classic! I remember playing this game for the very first time as a kid. I was in middle school when this came out, and EVERYBODY had this cartridge! One guy, who is still a great friend of mine, had a Gameshark, and we would bring him our carts and he would take them and unlock all the cheats and secret levels for us, haha! Good times :) I wish I would've been smarter as a kid and kept all of my old consoles and games :( I know a lot of other kids wish the same thing though. It was just SO tempting as a child without a job, to take your old stuff to the game shop and trade it in for the new thing! I wish I never would've done that, at least with my N64. I still have my SNES thankfully, and all of my games, my NES stopped working so my mom brilliantly threw it in the garbage..... Still have all my NES games though. Damn... Now I really want an N64 again.

I saw a talk given by Dr David Doak here on UA-cam that I recommend you look up for more info, where he revealed that his name was in fact not supposed to be in the final game, as rare wanted to limit the amount of personal info from the programmers in the game. It was snuck into the final build as sort of a screw you to management by Doaks immediate superior. The talk was at some sort of gaming conference, look up his name and maybe GoldenEye and you should find it.
Also, GoldenEye lives on in the speedrunning community, where it is still very popular. Check out Karl Jobst's videos to see how people still play the game on the N64 today.

I loved the wii remake though after years away from the Wii controls when I went back to play it again this summer I ditched the Wii zapper and plugged in an old game cube controller. Was perfect! Both that and the original were the best bond games hands down tho night fire on GameCube and the world is not enough on n64 were dope AF as well..
Thank you for the amazing video. This one and the many I’ve watched before. Your channel is hands down my favorite!

Definitely a product of it's time, and has not aged well, but it deserves a retrospective like this. Well done Daniel, the story of it's development and the people who made it is a story all by itself that deserves to be told. We appreciate that hard work you've obviously put into this.

Have you seen the mockumentary ‘Going for GoldenEye’? It’s all about the few competitive GoldenEye players trying to keep the flame alive. It’s on Amazon Prime - not great, but it’s got a charm to it. And it’s only 40 minutes.

@@Compucles When I was a kid, I walked to my grand parents after school, and I usually watched some Television since they had some more TV channels.
Remington Steele was on for several years, I was not the biggest fan, but I think it either went before or after some other show that I watched.
The show I usually waited on, was of course, The A-Team!
Sometimes they sent Magnum, T.J. Hooker, Airwolf or Knight Rider instead.
For me, I think A-Team and MacGyver is 2 of the best TV programmes ever made. Especially MacGyver is a show for everyone, young and old.

Good video but just a quick note: Saltzman and Broccoli actually split up in the three year gap between The Man With The Golden Gun in 1974 and The Spy Who Loved Me in 1977. Richard Maibaum took Saltzman's position from 77-89.

Use control style 1.2 to move with the d-pad and aim with the analog stick, works very close to a dual analog setup.
Or if you really need two analog sticks, try one of the 2.x control styles, where you use two controllers at once.

Hey Daniel Ibbertson will you do a video on the entire James Bond 007 The History and the Games video in the future? Also as much as Pierce Brosnan is what I consider the definitive Bond character but I think Timothy Dalton portrayal as Bond is criminally underrated.

Since everyone else has covered GoldenEye 64 so well, I'm just going to state that I really enjoyed the Wii remake. Yet, you hit the nail on the head, that the Wii version doesn't have the same charm as GoldenEye, for the same reasons you explain. A shame, really.

  • @michaelrezendes7603

I changed the controller style right away, as the original layout was asinine. Changing it so you moved with the c buttons (which was like the d pad on the Nintendo Switch) and aimed with the analog stick. Because of that change it would be relatively easy to go back and play it today. The duel controller style was the best but you obviously couldn't do 4 player multiplayer like that.
I also bought the Wii remake but it wasn't very good, the best thing about it was the free T-shirt included that had a picture of Odd job's hat and the word "Cheater" above it!

Someone asked me recently, what would you like to see on Metroid Prime 4, and I said: "dual analog stick support".
I remember when Metroid Prime 2 came and my friend let me play it and I was like, how do you aim here and he told me "just like Goldeneye" and I just gave a dead stare to the Gamecube controller and thought, "what a waste of C stick".
Even though I played Goldeneye back in 2000 - 01 as a kid, I got quickly used to modern dual stick controls and specially mouse and keyboard on PC, so having a 97 control scheme on 2004 felt baffling and I understand why it can feel somewhat less endearing to revisit the old classic nowadays, that is why I really enjoyed Goldeneye on the Wii it really felt like a modern shooter but with the great awesomeness of the N64 era like, an entertaining full campaign with no season pass BS and specially 4 people on the same room multiplayer.
