Thank you! I am not as technical as you so I just turned the fridge part for a day and it worked! If I didn't see your video, I would have called repair. Thank you for taking the time.
Props to you for going through all this trouble and thanks for the video. I’m just sitting here watching like 😮 😳 This is too much work removing all the food and shelves to access the problem. What a headache!
My moms fridge had this problem. One thing we think contributed to the ice build up is that the drain lines on bottom-back of the fridge were not draining into the drip pan. This caused water to build up behind that panel, all the way up under the coolant line. To fix this, unplug the fridge, take off the panel behind the fridge on the bottom, there are three hoses that pull off. Each one has a white stopper thing attached to it that I think is meant to keep critters from crawling up the drain line, but they eventually get moldy and clog. Take them off and rinse off any mold. Put them back together. That should make allow the back panel to drain correctly and keep water, and therefore ice, from building up behind that panel.
Can't you just defrost the whole fridge and freezer! I have the same problem but it seems really hard and fiddly taking that back panel off and chipping away. Surely a total defrost would be easier?
Thank you so much! Our 7 year old Samsung fridge just did this today. We didn’t have as much ice buildup as you but getting rid of what we did have fixed the problem
THANK YOU!!!! You saved me hours of trying to figure this out. My wife and kids also say thank you because no project is ever this easy and ends up with a grumpy dad….not this time 😊
Thank you for your guidance! Mine was frozen pretty good and I was able to use a hairdryer behind the main plate enough to pull out the block of ice that was rubbing against the fan. Bought me a few more months before I need to break down and buy a new one (stopped making ice years ago).
Thank you so much for sharing your experience. The noise it so loud. And it just happened today. When I read all the comment I unplug it. I hope it works. I don't like Samsung. Refrigerator and washing machine always problem. I have IG. Over 28 years. I need to go back to peace of mind.
So I’ve had to open this back up a few times since the video. I bought a heat gun and it def helps lol. Experimenting w different things, hope to post a solution vid soon!
Can I just say, I will never in my lifetime buy another Samsung product. Their refrigerator's are the worst. I have replaced the ice maker twice , once at my expense (over $300) the other Samsung (through a class-action suite they lost). Now the ice in the back, just like the above video. Getting into that panel has not been easy either. THEY SUCK!!!!!!!!
I'm having this exact same maddening problem right now. Thanks a lot for taking the time and effort to make this video and explain to us laymen what's up
not buying a samsung fridge again, ice maker issues and now this fan issue. I have a forced defrost mode by holding freezer and lighting button for 15seconds, then press freezer button until rd (refrigerator defrost). FD does fridge and freezer defrost that can work to. you can keep pressing defrost button and it will cycle through again until you hit right setting. Yours may too. I needed to run 5 cycles and it still caked up again in 1 month. Terrible design.
I do it every three months. But this time there was that clip thing that fell off the tube, and i couldn't work out where it went, so your video came in very handy! Cheers!
Ha! Happy to hear it helped out! Oddly enough, last time I messed with mine I ripped out all the styrofoam and just put plastic shell back. Has been fine for a few months.. no ice build up
You still kept power on while you open the cover, it’s too risky. Best way is just turn the power off for at least 4-5 hr once all ice melted down will be fine
Had this same issue. Got real good at taking it apart and defrosting it. No help from Samsung so trashed it out for a new LG. Almost 2 years now and no issues. No more Samsung for us.
Yea I finally stopped the fan icing issue, but now it’s icing up elsewhere. About to have to defrost again. Good to know LG is an option. Hope to get rid of this sucker one day soon!!!
We just unplugged ours to let it thaw out for couple days . Put stuff in extra frigerator in the garage that was about 2 months ago and starting to do it again
Samsung fixed this problem with the metal cool . Once you break the foam it freezes up more often . I replaced the back panel and installed the extended drain heater prong . It has been 5 mnths without issue .
This is interesting. I bought a panel but haven’t replaced yet. Last time I was in there I tore out all the foam and just put the plastic shell back in (not this video). Hasn’t frozen up yet, been a couple months. Need to take it apart and check it soon..
WOW that's a lot of ice, I have the same problem but not nearly the same amount of ice build up. I use an old hair dryer to melt it off, don't want to take a chance with pipes and wires, takes me about 15mins. I use to have to do mine about every 6 months, its now every 10-11mths. What I've done is to not place too many items too close to the back panel of the fridge, I leave a little space between your food/containers/popcans/etc and it seems to allow the ice to defrost at a greater rate.
Interesting. I’m still troubleshooting and trying some different solutions. Hoping to make another video once i figure out something useful. Nice to hear you were able to stretch out the deicing time so long with yours
@@fiveohmxco time will tell, we use to stack pop cans and bottles on the top shelf right to the back of the fridge where the fan is, the cans and bottles would get real cold, I suspect between the circulating cold air and cold cans/bottles right up against the panel it keeps the area too cold to melt...just a theory as to why I can go a longer period of time without removing the panel to manually defrost it.
@@fiveohmxco apparently there is a drain pan towards the bottom of the fridge, the water is caught there and evaporates due to air flow and the heat from the compressor.
This problem started today. I could not release the bottom shelf. Pushed on opposing tabs to no avail. I might have to drill them out to finally free that shelf. I goosed the fridge into a defrost cycle by using the 'rd' command. That didn't fix it. I noticed that the fridge temperature setpoint was at its lowest limit -- 34 F. After some research I came to realize that 37 F would be just fine. I have it at 38 F now and the noise is gone. Maybe I'll bump it down to 37. I won't go back to 34 F.
Yea I feel like pushing the little tab in never really ‘works’ and I end up having to pull it up a little and it pops out. Risky tho. Always scared I’ll break it
This is a temporary fix. Every month or so, your fridge should engage a heat coil that melts that big block of ice. Look into replacing your defrost timer! Should be pretty easy for you!
Why don't you get the automatic defroster fixed? Is this fridge under warranty? It's clearly not working causing the issue. " For some reason it isn't working" That's what you have warranty for but is now voided since you have tampered with the fridge attempting DIY.

Fridges with less features tend to have less problems....but hey ...theres youtube and anything is fixable !!
Yupp got a scratch and dent sale for only $900 but oh no. Same thing but sounds like it's coming from the lower bottom freezer portion. Think I'm just gonna call my appliance technician.
Samsung sent a guy out for our ice maker problem years ago. Supposedly did like $300 worth of stuff covered under warranty. Fixed it for like 2 weeks 🤷🏾♂️
We're halfway into this, and the top middle screw is apparently frozen in place! We've been blow-drying it, and fridge has been unplugged for an hour. Nothing is working. At least we got a chance to vacuum all the dust behind it. I suppose eventually the ice behind the panel will melt. Hope my fresh food survives this.
There’s a way to ‘force defrost’ the fridge. I would recommend trying that. Just google or UA-cam ‘Samsung defrost’ and follow the directions. You have to push certain buttons to get it to work
We tried 3 cycles of the forced defrost before trying to get the panel off. Unfortunately we stripped the philips head before we ever got it out so we gave up, left the thing unplugged for about 4 hrs. Plugged it back in a couple hours ago and all seems to be well for now. Thanks! @@fiveohmxco
It would take hours for that block of ice around the fan to defrost. The defrost mechanism is only routed around the coil and does not have a loop near the fan. But force defrost definitely would be recommended for disassembly of the internal panel. I should’ve done that, and do that now that I know about it.
Don't go through all this work, just empty refrigerator and unplug for a while, like 5 hours, with doors open, the ice will melt, and not just some like when he cuts it out.
The force defrost will only melt ice around the coils, not up by the fan unfortunately. But I highly recommend running force defrost a couple times before removing the panel!

The ice on and around your coils resemble ice buildup on an open container of ice cream after 7mths in the freezer untouched. Sure you have buildup but adding breakages of open air doesn't help.
