- This story is from a game of Mutants and Masterminds, which is another tabletop RPG like Dungeons and Dragons, but it focuses on making superheroes instead of an adventurer. This story is about my brother and getting him into tabletop RPGs and that one time he couldn't make a superhero in time for the game, but I made one for him instead. Enjoy!

Hey, those stormtroopers on the Death star were ordered to miss, because of the crew of the Millennium Falcon had to get back to the ship, so that they could fly away so the tracking beacon would work and give away the Rebel base. Shooting a few guys vs. finding the rebel base...you can see where Imperial commanders went. They weren't stupid. And if they were, Darth Vader would choke them to death while making fun of them.

Funny story, yes. Good instance of GMing, not at all! While yes his brother said he wanted the most boring, worst superhero ever, that doesn't mean give him NO superpowers, it means just make another superman. Because he's pretty boring. Also for the Star Wars game, we let rules be broken for reasons. So people can have fun and not be stuck in space for eternity.

I think it would be funny if Chadwick just had intense intimidation abilities, so he can't do anything, but everybody is so afraid of him they flail around and accidentally kill themselves

Since I started playing Call of Cthulhu I apply the same philosophy to characters in other RPGs as I do in CoC, I make a character, and not stats, the other rpg I play is shadowrun, where if you know how, you can make quite the OP character, but instead I go more for something that would live in a world like that, I play a japanese fire mage, I can make lasers (in shadowrun mostly useless), control fire and making food out of thin air, so most of the time I eat, smoke cigarettes and drink out of my little cantine of high proof alcohol...and get my ass kicked, its really fun to play, but he is no where as skilled as my past characters

Friend in a game of M&M made a planet destroying ship with headquarter rules for a space campaign. It was bonkers. Course I had a wrist blaster that not only you could not see, hear or feel but needed a 30 treatment roll to figure out how they died. That game is wack.

I would play the character, but with one big change. I’d give myself ranks in whatever is used to persuade people (charisma).
I’d play him like Gilderoy Lockheart where he pretends he’s great even though he’s bad at everything.

He even was going to come early to make his character, but Ben told him not to and gave him a crap character who did nothing.

Once for mutants and masterminds I made a character for the lowest tier of play, and poured all the points into immortality at the highest level. I had a little left over for a rank or two of martial arts stuff, and that was it. I said he was a citizen of Pompeii, and discovered his power when Vesuvius erupted, only recently being dug up. He spent all that time alone, unable to eat, drink, or even breathe, his madness causing him to forget almost everything, and had to learn a new language just to explain that. While buried, he ended up referring to himself as Vesuvius. All that FOR THE LOWEST POSSIBLE TIER OF PLAY. This was a street level person, who would take on guys oof the caliber of daredevil or Jessica Jones. But even Galactus level characters couldn't kill him. Mutants and masterminds can get really absurd.

You say he can't kill anyone, but his opponents only have to be unlucky or have one vulnerability. He has infinite retries to test their luck/vulnerabilities. Assuming he doesn't get imprisoned again.

Chadwick Strongpants actually sounds hilarious if done right. The only exceptional thing about him is that everyone believes that the one and only Chadwick Strongpants is super powerful.

I think it would be a very interesting RP challenge to play as a character who isn’t at all special or strong but somehow has such an overwhelming reputation that he/she strikes fear in the hearts of his/her foes - like King from One Punch Man. The enemies would have to constantly make saving throws to avoid running away in fear. But the player has to maintain that reputation and be mindful that their actions don’t disrupt it!
Or Hercule Satan from Dragon Ball
I was expecting every last one of his character points to be in his reputation. Like just a normal dude with 100 experience points in his rep.

This video actually inspired my favorite character for any game ever. My friend was running mutants and Masterminds and I had watched this video with Chadwick strongpants so I built Rosebud. In this world, a famous superhero named rosebud was the strongest hero in the world but, unknown to the world, he died in a fight. Everyone assumed this random guy that was knocked unconscious during the fight and looked a little like Rosebud, was rosebud. So, he used this to become a powerful superhero with no powers other than the perception of him as this all powerful superhero. He played incredibly and was a blast all around so thank you Ben for that.
I might like to play as Chadwick Strongpants. I theorized a satirical character once called Everyman because he literally had no powers, didn't want to be a hero, but he shot a supervillain in self defense once and got famous for it. As such, he always looks at every perilous situation from the perspective of a regular person in a world without superheroes.

Everyman: call the fire department, but in the future, make sure all public orphanages are held to a higher fire code standard to prevent such tragedies.
Evil McNastyface is about to destroy the universe with his Doomsday device unless we give into his demands?
Everyman: Hear out Evil McNastyface's demands, and negotiate down to something more reasonable on the grounds that even super villains kind of need to live in a universe.
Despite not being very heroic, he often brought about safer, less ostentatious options to solving problems that other heroes would end up causing a big mess for if they tried to save the day. Everyman's the kind of guy who would likely side against the Incredibles in the aftermath of the Underminer fiasco. While I'm not saying he's always right to be that guy, he sometimes is!
That's all great, but as someone who's into this kind of thing I feel compelled to bring up that villians that want to destroy the universe don't have demands and they either don't care about their own well-being or they happen to be a multiversal threat.

There was a Batman: The Animated Series episode called 'The Man Who Killed Batman', where some random guy supposedly kills Batman and becomes a celebrity to villains.
If Chadwick Strongpants could really be played so he gets shit *done* by the weight of his reputation alone... I would definitely play that.
Have you ever heard of the Orc Thief? He put all his points into intimidation and none into stealth but it worked out alright in the end. Instead of rolling to see if the guards didn't see them, he rolled high on intimidation and would essentially go up to the guards and scream "YOU NO SEE GRONK" upon which the guards agreed that they did not see the giant orc thief running around.
Spoony had an Ork thief. When one guy laughed at him, he took out his club, K.O.ed in one swing. Took that guys gold and waited with a grin on his face.
This made me laugh for a solid minute
Yep, people see the word "Thief" and think "stealthy, cunning rogue", but it could just as easily mean "big, scary, armed mugger" or hell, "manipulative, overly-cautious office work embezzler". It's all about that creative flair you bring to your character that really makes them stand out in their role. "YOU NO SEE GRONK!" is my new favorite Thief reference.
I actually suggested the idea of a rouge giant to my DM as a joke once he liked it and said he would consider it for a future boss, oops.
There's the whole saying "you can't see the forest for the trees" or is it "you can't see the trees for the forest" that makes me think a rogue giant could actually work really well with Thief stealth if you take into account how unsuspecting one might be of a large tree in the middle of a forest, or if the ground shaking is too much of a giveaway, being concealed within a rockslide on a mountain could easily be the preferred method of theft from some sort o mountain giant bandit leader. Or perhaps how easily one could "pickpocket" by simply bumping into all sorts of people and stores and unassumingly steal during the ensuing mess of things and purses being knocked down without much of a thought given to the "sleight of hand" of a giant when one might, for example, run down a busy street and nab a purse and no one could notice simply because the giant's balled up fist conceals the stolen theft as they flee from the scene of the crime not even having been suspected because no one would have assumed such a blatant theft to occur from someone so large and easy to spot.

One moment - by Orc Wizard, do you mean the Volo's version? Reason is, while the Volo's version has a -2 penelty to Intelligence, the Eberron and Wildemount versions lack said penelty. On plus side, he can use his staff to knock some sense into people better than the other sorts (unless they too also have a +2 to strength, as most make that the dump stat for wizards).

Andrew Lockwood Constitution bonus helps too. But I can’t think of a worse combination still.

@@SuperBatSpider Only other one that might be an issue is putting a Kobold in a strength-based class, due to their -2 to strength, but even that can be worked around, when one puts the 15 there, and their +2 to Dexterity means that Mr. Barbarian (and Mr. Monk and other Dexterity-based classes) get a boost to their AC, any class that used Dexterity as their Dump Stat would get a 10 (standard stat point array) and thus a 0 modifier, and so on. And with Tasha's Cauldron of Everything coming out in a couple of months, that too might be remedied.

A Gnome Monk is still a perfectly playable character though.

Theory: Chadwick is actually an escaped SCP, as denoted by his uniform. He wasn't a playable PC because MTF Epsilon-11 had to re-contain him, and he was 'disappeared' before the players could choose a character. Nine Tail Fox is truly magnificent.

I actually had to give my player a Chadwick Strongpants in my Mutants and Masterminds campaign. His Superman-esque character was running security for "Whitney Spears" at a benefits concert, and the group learned that a vampire lord was trying to use the event for his own nefarious ends. During a security sweep, the hero got ambushed by a villain called Hellpyre, wound up in the ICU... and became unplayable when the surgeon who was operating on him rolled a crit fail on his Treatment check.
With no backup sheets or time to roll up a brand new character, I just handed him the stats of an ordinary thug from the back of the handbook and gave him the role of "Buster Hogan", a private investigator who had been to shadow the group for any signs of wrongdoing. I figured it'd be interesting to get a session from a civilian point of view. After all, how much damage could a thug with a gun wreak on the vampires?
Long story short, Buster Hogan wound up saving the city when he critted the mind-controlled Whitney Spears and broke the ritual that would've drowned the city in night for three days, which would've allowed Lord DeGhul to take over the city. When the other player (who was Whitney's boyfriend) came after him in a blind rage, he tried to shoot a chandelier and drop it on the hero... but he crit-failed his shot. The chandelier crushed HIM to death instead. But thankfully the evidence on his phone was enough to prove his heroics... and thus Buster Hogan, an ordinary man, became the real hero of the infamous Red Weekend.
I've watched this video multiple times over the years and only just now realized, Ben basically created King. As in King from One Punch Man: a man who is so un-exeptionally normal that his enemies get afraid and overthink the combat to the point that they defeat themselves. All he needed is for him to accidentally take credit for the work of actual heroes to build his reputation.

M&M character creation is pretty complex (remember, we're talking about a game designed to be able to simulate _any_ comic book hero). It's completely unreasonable to expect a newbie to be able to generate a character all by themselves.
Ben should have just thrown him one of the pregens.
But, of course, that would have robbed him of an opportunity to _further_ convince his brother that TTRPGs suck and that everyone who plays them is a complete penis.

I mean, it's just King from One Punch Man, in a way: all reputation, no actual fighting prowess, and he happens to be at the right place at the right time to maintain that reputation without fighting. So the concept is sound as a functional character approach. He'd be useless in combat, of course, but who cares? Oh right, the party...

Scp standing for Secure Contain Protect, there's plenty videos that explain quite a bit of the popular ones. A J SCP is an SCP with a comedic look to it. Like some I remember is SCP 420 which is just a never ending joint. And SCP good boy which is just a good dog. I'd check some out dude it's quite fun and binge worthy.

M&M is a great system. Rn I’m playing an artist who makes people OD on paint thinner with a party consisting of a clown who has a banana gun, a cactus and a guy who does psychic damage if you look him in the eyes so he has to wear a blindfold all the time. We’re also doing backstory solo games for each player where we get to design villains for the other players. My favorite that I’ve made is Bumbo, the elephant who hates clowns and controls the media to turn public opinion against them.
…there’s a joke to make with that last character. I’m not gonna make it, because I just really don’t feel like going there right now, but I just want to acknowledge the obvious opportunity.

generally if we have one player who is just unable to have fun and would need to sit out for hours, we try to make getting that person back in the game as the focus.
Thats what someone sensible does. Here we just force people into playing and focus in making his experience the most boring shit possible, then complain they don't invest interest into a completely funless activity.

If you have a player who won't make a character you cut them or arrange a proper sit-down and discussion to get ideas going. Despite that, he was willing to make a character on the day and Ben didn't let him because he had his epic meme set up.

Exactly. My wife ran a D&D game and did something like that to a player for almost two game sessions and then he didn't come back. She didn't do it on purpose but her excuse was that it was just what happened and the dice rolls kept him separated and trapped, and she couldn't understand why he wouldn't want to play again. I had to explain to here the a DMs job is to tell tell a story, include all of the players and make sure everyone has fun. You literally have the power to change the game in any way you need to make sure that happens, you never have to be at the mercy of dice rolls the way players are. She could run a game by the rules and knew the system, she just hadn't gotten used to that idea yet.
To be fair as far as how that looks is that in the space battles he kept getting shot down first and early and then everyone else was having a major space battle and didn't like pull up alongside to try and get him into a ship to continue (something that ranges from dangerous to impossible dependent on the ships involved.) And this happened 3 times probably in different sessions but every space battle he just got taken out.....something that doesn't overly surprise me dependent on the system. We played Saga at one point and even with modded ship life to gain hp based on the pilots we got damn near being blown out of the sky and destroyed frequently. (missiles hurt, Ion just makes things stop.)
With the character sheet it ranges there. On the one hand I could slap my damn sister who has been doing this for over a year at one point. On the other I'd never make her an intentionally shit character.

As for the space battle stuff, if I were GMing in that kind of situation I'd give the guy a reroll/skill check/NPC helper so he doesn't get so fucked. Like the other guy here said, as a GM you have so much control over the situation, and your highest priority is to make sure people have fun.
I would totally play Strongpants, and ride that reputation of his all the way to victory.
