I believe the UA-cam algorithm is hooking up Chompi immensely It got on my feed out of nowhere even though I don't browse videos related to it at all, and it captivated me. It's cute, it's music related and it's out to bring artistic creation to the laymen. With all that, its appeal is universal It's price however, it's not. They really need to reveal more features to it in order to justify the cost. Thanks for bringing alternatives to the conversation.
I think all you'd really need to do is replace the built in keyboard. Like the mechanical switches are nice, and looks cool, but I'd have to venture that's a major contributor. It seems like a gimmick thrown on to make computer geeks cream their pants. It kinda worked on me until I realized it costs the same as a like a well built fender.
@@plantain.1739 I'm not even sure if it was meant to be interesting for computer people. These keys are just absolute dirt cheep in bulk.. With a good partner you can mill aluminum keys and mold their own scissor switch, and still keep the price under $400.
100%. I thought that as soon as I saw it. Same goes with the OP-1, they're very gimmicky with huge price tags. Nothing beats Maschine IMO. I had a Mikro Mk1 probably a decade ago and got a Maschine Mk3 a few years ago. I've also got a PO-133 which is super fun and portable, I've made heaps of beats on plane rides and long travels.
@@DEADMOOSE23 I can only speak from a hip hop standpoint - Native Instruments is still new to the game in comparison to Akai - The MPC helped birth hip hop and holds a ton of prestige. I never owned an MPC and bought straight into Maschine. It mainly comes down to people being comfortable with what they've been using for years and the signature sound different hardware can produce.
I'm glad you mentioned Techno Logic. People should watch that video to get a better idea on the project. This is an instrument that can be used by people who have visual struggles, like Tobias. No straining to see a screen plus tactile considerations made this a yes to back, for me. This isn't for everyone. But if it's not for you, that doesn't mean it's invalid. It just means it's for other people ...who want to experiment with sounds and sound design.
I think the tech factor will generate its own negative response, if you don't grok what it IS, it looks just - wonky. I thought it was a Toys-R-Us thing till I saw its capabilities. I could build a sampler that LOOKS on the surface much like this, put a HelloKitty sticker on it and sell it for $29.95. But this is an _instrument,_ not a toy, it just looks whimsical. (Maybe make a "Strad" model in a burl walnut case with ebony buttons?) But the specs - and sound - say this is an amazing addition to the Looper community.
A very thoughtful and insightful video. The Chompi is clearly aimed at the OP series, but without Teenage Eng's frankly abusive pricing. As a recent Daisy owner, I can tell you that even with an extensive engineering and technical background I am overwhelmed by what you have to learn to do something useful with the Daisy (besides loading sample patches). I don't mind learning Pure Data and Max MSP to program the Daisy, but the Chompi's price probably goes nowhere to paying off the no-doubt countless hours of programming and development. That is what sets the price, not just the keys and controls and the cute case.
@@DECIMA1 I am currently learning Pd, Max 8, and the Arduino IDE. You might check out the three, keeping in mind there is also Plugdata which is a ‘wrapper’ so to speak for Pd. Plugdata is also a VST so imagine opening Ableton, loading Plugdata as a VST, and developing a Pd patch which can then be used with Ableton reverb, filters, all that stuff. Kind of blows your mind. The learning curve for Daisy is extremely steep considering the various disciplines you need to be proficient in, and that you need to organize together.
happens a lot with small scale gear, whenever people complain about price being 'a lot for XYZ microcontoller and a case' they just dismiss the many, many of hours of development time. and yeah the skillset to build something that is actually fun and useful to use is not trivial at all, there are multiple difficult end to end tasks which need months to years of experience. and that's just for a prototype let alone bringing something to market...
As someone who has ZERO experience with any musical instrument, the Chompi is something that is really appealing to me. It’s super simplistic which is a good thing so it won’t overwhelm me or discourage me.
I think you are deceived by marketing. Making sample based music is much more complicated then using a midi controller and programming midi. That's exactly what a lot of the comments are getting at. This would hamper a beginner with it's lack of labels etc. It's not gonna help you build your vocabulary or understanding.
The Daisy Seed is the new chip on the block ... really cool circuit. Partially open source probably means that other builders cannot just make their own Chomi using a Daisy Seed.

I don't think it really matters ... even though I might have to means to solder up something myself ... it would not come close to the craftmanship. It looks like the case itself is made from PCB material, which is kinda cheap, but also kinda clever ... the Korg NTS-1 uses a PCB case too. But the real killer feature is the tape transport emulator ... and that handle! 😆
I am already making my own just based on the video alone, whats the big deal? It really is not that complicated device, price is too high, although can be justified.
Tobias and Chelsea are my friends and I know that they are not trying to keep this from being Open Source, the partial part is that Tobias developed a really unique sampling program that is his, but, he has told me that he wants people to develop custom firmware and they will develop their own different firmware's. Tobias's goal is to make it so anyone can make their Chompi the way they want it, if you don't like their firmware, you can use your own.
i don't think some people in these comments get the price; if you don't but don't mind, then cool, but don't shit on chompi for not trying to understand where they're coming from... they're most likely pretty honest in their price statement. i'm very happy chompi comes in lower but not too much lower, because no doubt they would have an absurd development ratio if they went lower than this retail price. it takes a lot to build any product, espcially hardware, think about the companies that do already and their history. OP-1 had the largest hand in putting teenage engineering on the map, but they were literally on the verge of discontinuing the thing 4 yrs ago because of just one part shortage, because they had to account for new hardware to replace their old supplier, granted along with inflation and other world factors. that's also after they gained new investors, so they absolutely had to keep their main selling product, and people still happily bought it, and it allowed them to go forth and make the Field. on the op-1's release, people shit on it for being so high at 850, disregarding it was a new product practically in it's own class with 11 synthesis engines, onboard effects, a tape recorder, sequencer, arpeggiator, etc all in one. i'm still happy with my OP-1! paid an arm for it, it's returned some good memories and moments and i still use it. Roland with the sp404 has made gear for decades, they've been here, they know how to make good shit, market it, and sell it how it counts. here comes chompi a decade later, a slightly similar option for actually less than op-1's initial release, more comparable with the sp404 at a similar price range, pretty fair... people still complain though. not even to mention 5% of chompi club profits going to charity and education...not just for chompi, chompi CLUB profits, probably meaning all other sales including whatever else releases under the brand. if build quality is good and i get the features in their debut vid, i'm honestly very happy to purchase chompi as soon as i'm able. i'm glad their kickstarter did well. i think overall discounting other products... just buy chompi on its release if you think it'll benefit you and you can. no point in sending hate to the new people trying to make something cool saying they should sell it for less. they can price it whatever they feel like, and they choose to make it a similar price to other options out there. maybe consider just saving money instead, or getting any of the cheaper alternatives out there, then realize later you want something more like chompi or the op-1 or the sp404 etc etc etc. valid points to those saying there's not a lot of info on the chompi so far, i hope they come out with all the more detailed specs soon.
I love minimalistic restriction in music. I used to have expensive software, and big midi keyboard and such. When I was getting deeper into producing I got rid of most of my setup, I had a chrome book and found all kinds of free extensions people created for music and audio recording. I used to sample different noises I’d hear in random vlogs and stuff online and create sounds from them. I would have loved to have something like this back then. I don’t create music anymore but this thing looks like a minimalists dream
I was all in until I saw the price. It should be $349-399 for what it is. The organelle offers so much more and is $499 retail compared to the $599 of the chompi. I’m sure it as still sell in huge numbers though and if so, you could argue they have priced it right for them as a company.
Probably so, but liking your gear is SOOOOO important . . . more important than a $100 IMHO. If it was my grove the price wouldn't offend me to bad. Looks way better built than say the OP-Z @$599 and the CHOMPI being "Made in USA" also warrants the price. I could never stand trying to make inspirationing music using gear made via expoilation by abusive communists
As someone who wants to make sample music to coincide with my art. This device from my fresh eyes is appealing simply by the fact that it doesn’t look intimidating. Other, possibly better devices tend to look a bit intimidating from my untrained eyes. to see something like this, especially after seeing they’re walkthrough video, definitely draws me in. I’d like to know what others think would better suite a noobie like me though
Honestly, I really don’t care how much this thing is. It looks fun as hell and satisfyingly simple. Plus it’s wacky reverb engine sounds totally awesome in my opinion. If I had money to burn I’d buy it.
Chompi is probably too expensive for me, but I'd like something like this to play with my kids and also just by myself. What I'm looking for is FL studio and piano in a form that I don't have to do a lot of setup or figure out cording etc. Glad to see development on these kinds of products
About time somebody built a decent sampler that spreads itself right to the keys. Stacking samples and built in, real time effects?! Sk series on steroids. 500 bucks sucks because 500 bucks sucks. I will own one of these. Great job on a dream come true, core piece of gear!!
I am really glad someone made this video, I was super skeptical when I first saw the chompi vid. Not to mention the design and graphics are offputting to say the least.
Was super excited for this but for the tier I was looking into would have worked out to close to $1k AUD and that’s way outside my budget for something I’m not guaranteed to use every time I record. Gonna have to learn to live without an adorable pink instrument on my desk.
At the moment I own the Deluge (my favorite sampler by far), the Digitakt, the Organelle M and Ableton Live 11. I have also gone through most of the Roland samplers... From the Sp-202, 303, 555... etc. The Deluge is my workhorse for sampling and sequencing and the Organelle M is basically my experiment box/portable multi instrument. The Digitakt, as awesome as it is gets pretty dusty because of the Deluge. What interests me about the Chompi is the streamlined feature set and immediacy. I am primarily a string player, but I almost always incorporate samples and drum sequencing in my live music. Often times I am jamming with 3-4 other guitar players and the string section is a little busy. So, in a jam or even in studio work I like devices like these so I can occupy other spaces. The Chompi stands out because as you mentioned, people with little or no musical experience show quick interest in it. So, "new to music" people, kids, and experimenters can quickly get their head around this and participate. I thought it would be like this with the Organelle, but most musicians seem intimidated by it and cover it up by brushing it off as a toy. (Anyone who has one knows what the deal is though 😅). I won't rush out and buy Chompi as I tend to wait a bit before deciding to incorporate new gear, but I wouldn't be surprised if I end up with one. It looks great and the price is pretty competitive actually. When you think if the components, effects, looper, mic... etc... things aren't free. We can have mass produced vanilla products for cheap or interesting oddball devices that cost a little more. My experience dealing with a small company like Synthstrom (Deluge) has been great. They really care about the one device they make and its user base. I can't believe how much it has grown since it was released, like getting a new tool every few months with a simple firmware update. It was a bit expensive in the beginning, but now that I have had it for a few years, worth every cent. Hopefully the Chompi experience is similar.
@@guywholikescats Yeah, we'll see. I leave for a 3 year bicycle tour in a few months, with the Deluge and Organelle, so I am not sure if the Chompi will be in my near future. Either way, I am excited that gear like this exists and that independent people are making it.
People keep bringing up the price, I feel that the price for a start-up crowdfunded project is fine. It doesn't feel like they are going for a massive production so an early slightly overpriced product is to be expected, also I don't think that this is supposed to be your first sampler, this feels more of a sampler you add to your set-up for the spice. The things I want to see from this is the specs instead of the features, how much the sample time is exactly on this sampler and what does it mean 6+ hours of sampling? Can it sample at mono? At what bit rate will it sample? At what Hz does it samples 22? Will it have a sequencer or just a looper? How many tracks? Will there be trigger mode for the layered effects? Will it have any short of chopping capabilities or just trimming? Right now they keep too much off the record, which is not too worrying considering the time of the project, right now it is kind of early for them to release the specs, but I expect them out at least a month before they open the pre-order option.
As a long time M8 owner, I 100% agree. The M8 is around the same price, has more than 8 voices of polyphony, and does A LOT more than sampling. Besides that, it's made by just one guy, and Tim has better customer support than multinational companies. You could not support a better product.
Thats my issue. I'm one of the 100 people that has no business buying any musical instrument but thought it looked cool and could be easy for me to learn on but, I feel like theres a 6 min vid and nothing else to show what it's cabible of before the kickstart starts kinda a bummer tbh
Roland Sp404 MkII $560, most if not all the same functions plus some extras, idk if it has stereo output, but this is the goat right now for the price nuff said, if this was priced at $200-$300 I could see them flying off the shelf and still get a nice profit, but this just seems like the OP1, nice gimmick for the niche music production group....
When I first ran across this thing, I fell in love with what I saw and what it looked like it can do. It really got my creative juices flowing and I was happy to look more into diving deep into such a product. But that price point is just way too high, kickstarter backer or not. I can’t say from a technical standpoint if or if not the value is hidden there within that price, but I can say that a price point like this is absolutely going to keep a large portion of its potential customers at bay. Considering this is going for a very beginner friendly vibe, that price point sure isn’t. And I unfortunately think that’s going to keep people who would otherwise like to learn and experience more about this field right where they are now watching this video, primarily in the spectators seat only. :/

People can complain about Teenage Engineering’s prices all they want, but this thing, cool as it is, just separates out a handful of OP-Z features at full OP-Z price in a fancy shell. Sure, they’re a small team, all the nice things you can say about them, yadda yadda, but it’s double the price it should be.
Really nice video. I would also recommand the Liven Lofi12 from Sonicware. It's a sampler with 10 voices of polyphony, a 4 track 64 step sequencer, 5 effects engines, sample slicing, loop points and much more for 240USD.

To be honest, that seems a fair price for it. Considering it's basically a modern Casio "SK-1" sampler from the 80's. Basically any amount under $200 would be fair. But $600 (since last I've checked the $500 pre-order models are sold out.)...is WAY to much. $600 can get you a AKAI One or a Maschine Mk3, which are full fledged samplers/grooveboxes, and not a musical toy like this.
I feel like the price is more than fair considering that it's not a piece of Chinese sweat shop junk. I almost pre-ordered one, but I decided not to. I feel like it will be a good piece of gear for certain people, but I decided that it's probably not for me. In my opinion the Critter & Guitari's Organelle M, which I already own, is basically the same, except better. It doesn't look as cool, but it's open source, and offers a lot of option in what seems to be about the same size. I also own the OP-1 Field which cost the same as 4 Chompi's, but does way more. I still see why someone would want a Chompi, though. Hopefully the company finds success, and either comes up with a Chompi MK2 that can compete with Critters & Guitari and TE, or updates the Chompi's firmware, so it offers more functions. Right now it just kind of seems like an ungraded Casio SK1. Maybe I'm missing something, but that's what I got from the promo.

As a senior creative director inside places like Nike and Walmart eCommerce and others, this would be the kind of product you would drop the price to nearly selling at at a loss just to get it in the cultural bloodstream. At scale it would make money but the next one would have massive feature upgrade and a modest price bump and be the real winner.

Speaking of "high quality components" I would love to see the technical specs of the audio parts, especially the line in, the aux in and the headphone out. What's about impedance, signal to noise ratio, dynamic range etc.?
I don't think maschine or mpclive are competitors. I would consider those work stations more than a sampler. Really weird you didn't call out digitakt specifically as the 2nd most obvious competitor behind the op-1

Why would I buy this when I have a Roland SP Mk 2. I don’t see any advantage especially with the last update allowing a TB of storage, and that’s just v3.0I’m willing to bet 4 will be even bigger. Plus it is stereo 48 voice ploly. The TE field is a rip off but I have the KO and that doesn’t even qualify to be in this conversation. IF Chompi had something to offer like a huge voice number, multitimbral, etc… I would take a second look. Semi open source means nothing. Behringer Brains is Semi open source but at least for the moment, I can’t access it. I hate to say it, but it takes a company with Roland’s resources to make it anything but a donation.

Depends on your budget and how serious are you about deep diving into manuals/tutorials. PO33 is an interesting start but it's more of a toy than actual groovebox. Best bang for your bucks is MPCone for 500 bucks if you are willing to produce seriously, but very complex. You can also try model sample from elektron for 300$ (you can't directly sample tho), great drum sampler. Blackbox from 1010music close to 600 bucks small factor but very intuitive. But to begin and get used to sampling without having to get a phd in beatmaking, Lofi-12 from Sonicware for 250$.
First thing, the thumbnail caught me off guard lmao, second, kickstarter stuff is generally iffy so I think people should be careful. But if your research is correct on these two I hope it becomes successful. An interesting sampler just makes it more fun, hopefully if they are successful the price decreases.

@Pete Testube odds are you can do ten times what chompi does with what you sent that message with. I mean look at Liven. I just got a Lofi 12 for $250 and it’s more than you would expect for the price.
while the aesthetic is very cute and thus targets a wide non-professional audience, the pricing isn't. Professionals will pay that price, but it looks like a toy. Which makes Chompis conversion-strategy far less effective, than it's impression-strategy. While many people will look at it, only "kawaii"-producers and semi-professionals with money to throw around are likely to buy this.
For around 300$, you could get fl studio/Ableton, a small midi keyboard, and a decent mic. With that, you could do everything CHOMPI does and tons more. The price of it is ridiculous!!!
Not really much use in getting worked up over it. You'd definitely get it for the design, the aesthetic, the quirks etc. Because at under 500 $ you'd get the SmplTrek for example and have a much more capable machine. But not every product is about min maxing price to performance. This seems to be a vision of 2 people that have been working on it for a while. I won't be getting it but I respect and understand if they're just not in the position to go lower, without compromising their vision. especially since they're prob not mass producing. Noone's forcing anyone to buy it
@@prodbysixtah For texture modeling it's kind of cool. For some reason I got to think of lofi music production when I watched the demo. Turn nothing into something on the go without having to dive deep into plugs and shit to achieve the same results. But yeah, it's a no go on the price but I can't wait to see what people cook up with it.
Chompi is nice looking, sure. For the same price, you can get a dirtywave M8 and make absolutely professional music that isnt just a sampler and fx mechanical keyboard. I dont blame them, Im sure a lot of people will love it. Its just too expensive for what you get, for me anyway
It depends on your budget and what you are into and if you want to use a computer or not. Also any DJ controller can pretty much launch live samples and DJ.

As someone who has ZERO experience with any musical instrument, the Chompi is something that is really appealing to me. It’s super simplistic which is a good thing so it won’t overwhelm me or discourage me.
I think you are deceived by marketing. Making sample based music is much more complicated then using a midi controller and programming midi. That's exactly what a lot of the comments are getting at. This would hamper a beginner with it's lack of labels etc. It's not gonna help you build your vocabulary or understanding.

The Daisy Seed is the new chip on the block ... really cool circuit. Partially open source probably means that other builders cannot just make their own Chomi using a Daisy Seed.

I don't think it really matters ... even though I might have to means to solder up something myself ... it would not come close to the craftmanship. It looks like the case itself is made from PCB material, which is kinda cheap, but also kinda clever ... the Korg NTS-1 uses a PCB case too. But the real killer feature is the tape transport emulator ... and that handle! 😆
I am already making my own just based on the video alone, whats the big deal? It really is not that complicated device, price is too high, although can be justified.

Tobias and Chelsea are my friends and I know that they are not trying to keep this from being Open Source, the partial part is that Tobias developed a really unique sampling program that is his, but, he has told me that he wants people to develop custom firmware and they will develop their own different firmware's. Tobias's goal is to make it so anyone can make their Chompi the way they want it, if you don't like their firmware, you can use your own.

i don't think some people in these comments get the price; if you don't but don't mind, then cool, but don't shit on chompi for not trying to understand where they're coming from... they're most likely pretty honest in their price statement. i'm very happy chompi comes in lower but not too much lower, because no doubt they would have an absurd development ratio if they went lower than this retail price. it takes a lot to build any product, espcially hardware, think about the companies that do already and their history. OP-1 had the largest hand in putting teenage engineering on the map, but they were literally on the verge of discontinuing the thing 4 yrs ago because of just one part shortage, because they had to account for new hardware to replace their old supplier, granted along with inflation and other world factors. that's also after they gained new investors, so they absolutely had to keep their main selling product, and people still happily bought it, and it allowed them to go forth and make the Field. on the op-1's release, people shit on it for being so high at 850, disregarding it was a new product practically in it's own class with 11 synthesis engines, onboard effects, a tape recorder, sequencer, arpeggiator, etc all in one. i'm still happy with my OP-1! paid an arm for it, it's returned some good memories and moments and i still use it. Roland with the sp404 has made gear for decades, they've been here, they know how to make good shit, market it, and sell it how it counts. here comes chompi a decade later, a slightly similar option for actually less than op-1's initial release, more comparable with the sp404 at a similar price range, pretty fair... people still complain though. not even to mention 5% of chompi club profits going to charity and education...not just for chompi, chompi CLUB profits, probably meaning all other sales including whatever else releases under the brand. if build quality is good and i get the features in their debut vid, i'm honestly very happy to purchase chompi as soon as i'm able. i'm glad their kickstarter did well.
i think overall discounting other products... just buy chompi on its release if you think it'll benefit you and you can. no point in sending hate to the new people trying to make something cool saying they should sell it for less. they can price it whatever they feel like, and they choose to make it a similar price to other options out there. maybe consider just saving money instead, or getting any of the cheaper alternatives out there, then realize later you want something more like chompi or the op-1 or the sp404 etc etc etc. valid points to those saying there's not a lot of info on the chompi so far, i hope they come out with all the more detailed specs soon.
I love minimalistic restriction in music. I used to have expensive software, and big midi keyboard and such. When I was getting deeper into producing I got rid of most of my setup, I had a chrome book and found all kinds of free extensions people created for music and audio recording. I used to sample different noises I’d hear in random vlogs and stuff online and create sounds from them. I would have loved to have something like this back then. I don’t create music anymore but this thing looks like a minimalists dream

I was all in until I saw the price. It should be $349-399 for what it is. The organelle offers so much more and is $499 retail compared to the $599 of the chompi. I’m sure it as still sell in huge numbers though and if so, you could argue they have priced it right for them as a company.
Plus, it doesn't look like I could snap an organelle in half over my knee like a twig, unlike this thing.

As someone who wants to make sample music to coincide with my art. This device from my fresh eyes is appealing simply by the fact that it doesn’t look intimidating. Other, possibly better devices tend to look a bit intimidating from my untrained eyes. to see something like this, especially after seeing they’re walkthrough video, definitely draws me in. I’d like to know what others think would better suite a noobie like me though
I hope this video gives you more info on the CHOMPI so you can make an informed decision before ordering it on Kickstarter.

Chompi is probably too expensive for me, but I'd like something like this to play with my kids and also just by myself. What I'm looking for is FL studio and piano in a form that I don't have to do a lot of setup or figure out cording etc. Glad to see development on these kinds of products
About time somebody built a decent sampler that spreads itself right to the keys. Stacking samples and built in, real time effects?! Sk series on steroids. 500 bucks sucks because 500 bucks sucks. I will own one of these. Great job on a dream come true, core piece of gear!!

I am really glad someone made this video, I was super skeptical when I first saw the chompi vid. Not to mention the design and graphics are offputting to say the least.
Was super excited for this but for the tier I was looking into would have worked out to close to $1k AUD and that’s way outside my budget for something I’m not guaranteed to use every time I record. Gonna have to learn to live without an adorable pink instrument on my desk.
At the moment I own the Deluge (my favorite sampler by far), the Digitakt, the Organelle M and Ableton Live 11.
I have also gone through most of the Roland samplers... From the Sp-202, 303, 555... etc.
The Deluge is my workhorse for sampling and sequencing and the Organelle M is basically my experiment box/portable multi instrument.
The Digitakt, as awesome as it is gets pretty dusty because of the Deluge.
What interests me about the Chompi is the streamlined feature set and immediacy.
I am primarily a string player, but I almost always incorporate samples and drum sequencing in my live music. Often times I am jamming with 3-4 other guitar players and the string section is a little busy. So, in a jam or even in studio work I like devices like these so I can occupy other spaces.
The Chompi stands out because as you mentioned, people with little or no musical experience show quick interest in it.
So, "new to music" people, kids, and experimenters can quickly get their head around this and participate.
I thought it would be like this with the Organelle, but most musicians seem intimidated by it and cover it up by brushing it off as a toy. (Anyone who has one knows what the deal is though 😅).
I won't rush out and buy Chompi as I tend to wait a bit before deciding to incorporate new gear, but I wouldn't be surprised if I end up with one. It looks great and the price is pretty competitive actually. When you think if the components, effects, looper, mic... etc... things aren't free.
We can have mass produced vanilla products for cheap or interesting oddball devices that cost a little more.
My experience dealing with a small company like Synthstrom (Deluge) has been great. They really care about the one device they make and its user base. I can't believe how much it has grown since it was released, like getting a new tool every few months with a simple firmware update. It was a bit expensive in the beginning, but now that I have had it for a few years, worth every cent.
Hopefully the Chompi experience is similar.

@@guywholikescats Yeah, we'll see. I leave for a 3 year bicycle tour in a few months, with the Deluge and Organelle, so I am not sure if the Chompi will be in my near future. Either way, I am excited that gear like this exists and that independent people are making it.
People keep bringing up the price, I feel that the price for a start-up crowdfunded project is fine. It doesn't feel like they are going for a massive production so an early slightly overpriced product is to be expected, also I don't think that this is supposed to be your first sampler, this feels more of a sampler you add to your set-up for the spice.
The things I want to see from this is the specs instead of the features, how much the sample time is exactly on this sampler and what does it mean 6+ hours of sampling? Can it sample at mono? At what bit rate will it sample? At what Hz does it samples 22? Will it have a sequencer or just a looper? How many tracks? Will there be trigger mode for the layered effects? Will it have any short of chopping capabilities or just trimming?
Right now they keep too much off the record, which is not too worrying considering the time of the project, right now it is kind of early for them to release the specs, but I expect them out at least a month before they open the pre-order option.
It looks interesting but the pricing on this and the infamous OP1 Field has only pushed me more towards the M8 Tracker.
As a long time M8 owner, I 100% agree. The M8 is around the same price, has more than 8 voices of polyphony, and does A LOT more than sampling.
Besides that, it's made by just one guy, and Tim has better customer support than multinational companies. You could not support a better product.

Roland Sp404 MkII $560, most if not all the same functions plus some extras, idk if it has stereo output, but this is the goat right now for the price nuff said, if this was priced at $200-$300 I could see them flying off the shelf and still get a nice profit, but this just seems like the OP1, nice gimmick for the niche music production group....
When I first ran across this thing, I fell in love with what I saw and what it looked like it can do. It really got my creative juices flowing and I was happy to look more into diving deep into such a product. But that price point is just way too high, kickstarter backer or not.
I can’t say from a technical standpoint if or if not the value is hidden there within that price, but I can say that a price point like this is absolutely going to keep a large portion of its potential customers at bay. Considering this is going for a very beginner friendly vibe, that price point sure isn’t. And I unfortunately think that’s going to keep people who would otherwise like to learn and experience more about this field right where they are now watching this video, primarily in the spectators seat only. :/

People can complain about Teenage Engineering’s prices all they want, but this thing, cool as it is, just separates out a handful of OP-Z features at full OP-Z price in a fancy shell. Sure, they’re a small team, all the nice things you can say about them, yadda yadda, but it’s double the price it should be.
Really nice video. I would also recommand the Liven Lofi12 from Sonicware. It's a sampler with 10 voices of polyphony, a 4 track 64 step sequencer, 5 effects engines, sample slicing, loop points and much more for 240USD.

To be honest, that seems a fair price for it. Considering it's basically a modern Casio "SK-1" sampler from the 80's. Basically any amount under $200 would be fair. But $600 (since last I've checked the $500 pre-order models are sold out.)...is WAY to much. $600 can get you a AKAI One or a Maschine Mk3, which are full fledged samplers/grooveboxes, and not a musical toy like this.

I feel like the price is more than fair considering that it's not a piece of Chinese sweat shop junk. I almost pre-ordered one, but I decided not to. I feel like it will be a good piece of gear for certain people, but I decided that it's probably not for me. In my opinion the Critter & Guitari's Organelle M, which I already own, is basically the same, except better. It doesn't look as cool, but it's open source, and offers a lot of option in what seems to be about the same size. I also own the OP-1 Field which cost the same as 4 Chompi's, but does way more. I still see why someone would want a Chompi, though. Hopefully the company finds success, and either comes up with a Chompi MK2 that can compete with Critters & Guitari and TE, or updates the Chompi's firmware, so it offers more functions. Right now it just kind of seems like an ungraded Casio SK1. Maybe I'm missing something, but that's what I got from the promo.

As a senior creative director inside places like Nike and Walmart eCommerce and others, this would be the kind of product you would drop the price to nearly selling at at a loss just to get it in the cultural bloodstream. At scale it would make money but the next one would have massive feature upgrade and a modest price bump and be the real winner.

Speaking of "high quality components" I would love to see the technical specs of the audio parts, especially the line in, the aux in and the headphone out. What's about impedance, signal to noise ratio, dynamic range etc.?

Why would I buy this when I have a Roland SP Mk 2. I don’t see any advantage especially with the last update allowing a TB of storage, and that’s just v3.0I’m willing to bet 4 will be even bigger. Plus it is stereo 48 voice ploly. The TE field is a rip off but I have the KO and that doesn’t even qualify to be in this conversation. IF Chompi had something to offer like a huge voice number, multitimbral, etc… I would take a second look. Semi open source means nothing. Behringer Brains is Semi open source but at least for the moment, I can’t access it. I hate to say it, but it takes a company with Roland’s resources to make it anything but a donation.

a low cost and simple way to start if you want to get away from the computer is the PO-33 K.O. it's cheap (99 USD) and it can sample. It's also pretty simple too. Here is my demo video on it: ua-cam.com/video/9cml3Wa1bJ4/v-deo.html
Depends on your budget and how serious are you about deep diving into manuals/tutorials. PO33 is an interesting start but it's more of a toy than actual groovebox. Best bang for your bucks is MPCone for 500 bucks if you are willing to produce seriously, but very complex. You can also try model sample from elektron for 300$ (you can't directly sample tho), great drum sampler. Blackbox from 1010music close to 600 bucks small factor but very intuitive. But to begin and get used to sampling without having to get a phd in beatmaking, Lofi-12 from Sonicware for 250$.
Critter and guitari stuff is high but that thing can do a lot of stuff I want to see all the things that chompi could do

First thing, the thumbnail caught me off guard lmao, second, kickstarter stuff is generally iffy so I think people should be careful. But if your research is correct on these two I hope it becomes successful. An interesting sampler just makes it more fun, hopefully if they are successful the price decreases.

while the aesthetic is very cute and thus targets a wide non-professional audience, the pricing isn't. Professionals will pay that price, but it looks like a toy. Which makes Chompis conversion-strategy far less effective, than it's impression-strategy. While many people will look at it, only "kawaii"-producers and semi-professionals with money to throw around are likely to buy this.

Not really much use in getting worked up over it. You'd definitely get it for the design, the aesthetic, the quirks etc. Because at under 500 $ you'd get the SmplTrek for example and have a much more capable machine. But not every product is about min maxing price to performance. This seems to be a vision of 2 people that have been working on it for a while. I won't be getting it but I respect and understand if they're just not in the position to go lower, without compromising their vision. especially since they're prob not mass producing. Noone's forcing anyone to buy it

Turn nothing into something on the go without having to dive deep into plugs and shit to achieve the same results. But yeah, it's a no go on the price but I can't wait to see what people cook up with it.

It depends on your budget and what you are into and if you want to use a computer or not. Also any DJ controller can pretty much launch live samples and DJ.
